I have tryed a number of .avi files and havent been able to open them using WMP how come it doesnt work. :? replys much appreciated
The same problem happens to me.. I cannot copy the music using the wmp to my xda. It states the network path was not found. Anyone help me pls..
download Divx or sum other media player
had the same problem here. Downloaded the windows media encoder and converted to pocket pc friendly format, and worked a treat!
pocket wmp only play wmv and asf and other ms formats
the only non ms formats i think it plays are midi not sure if it does play that since i havent tried, wav, mp3
the give aways is if you explore around your files and choosing a avi file dont make wmp play it automaticly it's simply because it dont support it
and it dont auto get codecs like it does on windows at least my wmp dont but then it's not version 9

Hi
I wonder if anyone can tell me... how to play mp3 files and movie files say avi , mpg etc with the new windows media 8.5? I don't seem to be able to use the xda to play a simple mp3 file after I use activesync to transfer the file into the xda. It may a be simple software problem or do I need special codecs for these files to be played?
Sorry if it is a silly question.
Cheers
Hi, if you have the pocket pc 2002, and windows media player 8.5, you should be able to play mp3 files without any issue.
Try downloading a small mp3 file from the net to check. sometimes, if you dont have an SD card, and only a limited memory, and you try and copy a large mp3 to your xda, it cuts off half way when you run out of storage memory. This leaves your file corrupted, and hence you cant play it.
Close all your running apps. Adjust your memory settings, to increase storage area. Choose an mp3 file that is much smaller than available space (eg. ringtone from some website) and copy that to your xda.
Thanks
Hi
Thanks very much for your reply. Thot nobody is interested to answer a silly question like that. Indeed I think the mp3 file I tried to play is corrupted. Got windows media player to play other smaller mp3 files after your advice. However, can windows media player play mpg files at all? Always seem to get message that the movie file cannot be played.
Thanks again.

Hi
cant remember if media player 8.5 can play mpgs. However if you install pocket divx player, you should be able to play most file formats. Ofcourse it wont play all mpgs, or all avis, it depends on the codecs used, however common ones, especially divx are playable.

Just to let you know, Media player 8.5 can't play mpeg.
PocketTV is another alternative.
movie file size
HI
Thanks for info. Installed both pocket tv and divx and both are great. Only thing is size of movie files are too big. I have tried using VirtualDub to play around with movie compression but still hasn't found the optimal size to reduce a movie to be sensible for use in pdas. What is the screen size and how else besides the screen size can one use to reduce movie file size?
Cheers
Some good guides here:

Hi
In virtual dub, you need to ensure that you are specifying a codec for video compression AND audio compression.By default virtualdub does not compress the audio, hence the file tends to be quite large.
You may want to install some more audio codecs to give you a better compression. Try installing the WMA codecs, or get Windows Media player 9 on your system.
WMA codes
Hi
Thanks for replies. I have Windows Media 9 on my system; how to use it to get the audio compression with Virtual Dub?
Cheers
Vic
in the audio menu on virtuadub, you need to select Full Processing Mode. Then the compression option will become selectable. You can then pick an audio codec. Be aware not all audio codecs will be available on your xda. Use Windows Media Audio codecs, have a look at:

Well Ive got two new 256 memory cards today and quickly found a a 210 meg WMV file it plays but no sound plays with it
Any ideas :?
Anyone know where I can get a reinstall as I completely removed the software
Edit no matter I did a reset, still any ideas why the video works and not the sound
Try Beta Player:
http://corecodec.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57
It plays MPEG, DivX, Xvid, and alot of video formats, and after all, its FREE with source code also
Once I open anything on that software the touch screen freezes. :?
Thanks for the help though
Ah I think I know the problem the WMV Video is in Media Version 8 but the sound is in Audio 9
Anyway to downgrade the Audio?
Open the file in windows media encoder, then rencode the file to pocketpc format.
Just a quick question. does anybody know how to convert divx avi files into wmv files to go on the wallaby. because i tried windows media encoder, but it doesnt seem to do anythink, and i have to shut it down in the taskpanel. i have adobe premiere, but i dont know what the settings neet to be, and i cannot select 20 fps( the framerate in which the pocketpc wma's are beying played)
any ids?
thanks
wma == audio like mp3
wmv == video
most ppl just use
http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about

steve

or
make your movies into freaky special ms formats like wmv or something to make media player play them
Hi there.
WMV for PPC is not that good. Why don't you try this one:
http://divx.ppccool.com/ -- The very easy to use Encoder for all kinds of formats.
http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download -- The Code Pocket Media Player wich is fast enough to play high quality movies with high quality Sound. I was really impressed by both of these tools!
Have Fun,
Timo
EDIT, ah I'm sorry. Rudegar allready told you about the player... But use the encoder. Nothing is more intuitive than that
Hi Mcnugget
Thanks for your reply, but what do I do next...sorry im a bit thick
steve
normaly exe files are have to be run in windows and they autoinstall the pda program to the pda next time you sync
cab files are run on the pda where they autoinstall
both paths should result in an icon in programs which start the program
then you choose files and browse to where your movie is
then you click on the movie file and it plays
i ahve worked on a littel piece of movie 1 minute long and i need to have it on my HTV TYTN...

Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate 5.1.22.0305
this program rocks.. i did it..
if anybody needs a convertor to work with HTC...
use teh blackberry mp4 preset. ;o)
Can also use SUPER... Freeware conversion software. Nothing flash, but works OK... Converts a pile of formats though from avi to matroska, MP3 to ogg...
The thing with MP4 is it's like AVI - you can have one of many formats inside the MP4 wrapper.
It might be that the MP4 file has an H.264 video stream and an AAC audio stream - try playing it with CorePlayer Mobile or the Omnia MP4 player. I'd suggest you try playing it on your computer first (with something like VLC or Media Player Classic) - that way you can see what codecs it's actually using, and if needed transcode the file to a format which your mobile phone can play.
Thats why I like SUPER. It has specific settings for a multitude of devices, PPC's are on the list. Its up to you to choose the size of the screen, the frame rate and audio codec used but I find it works well and fast.
Cheers...
