I was just thinking. By default the phone wants to keep the backlight lit when it's on AC. Is that really smart? Isn't it more likely to conk out prematurely that way, or too much of a worry wart?
I just press the power button, hold, and it stays off, and yes the light source is likely to fail sooner in my view although I have been told that thermal shock from being switched on and off is more likely to make it fail. The only time I like it to stay on is when used as a navigation system at night.

Did anyone notice that during the call, the screen isn't actually turned off, the backlight is still on, it just shows blank screen. You can see this if you are in a dark ambient because of the backlight bleed on the screen.
So, while you are talking, you will lose battery charge on call and on screen backlight. I don't think it is an economical way of spending battery juice.
So actually the screen is on the whole time during the call, you just can't see it because there is nothing showing on the screen...
Or is this just my device?

I noticed that, anyway during a call, it obviously drains the battery even though the screen switched off & the use of the Proximity sensor is to switch off the screen during a call to prevent the screen from touching than the economizing the battery
I noticed a big improvement of the battery with the 2.1 Update.

It does use current, but i think its a minor amount. The reason why they leave it active but black for example, is that if you need to quickly access the dial pad you can do that, without waiting for a second or two for the screen to power on.
I recall back on 1.6 at times it felt like eternity that it would take to bring up the dial pad during calls. I'm not sure but check to see if the screen does in fact turn off completely after a certain duration, since that would be ok.
Nope, it doesn't turn off and I wouldn't say it's a minor amount of power, because the screen is one of the most power hungry components in our phones. So if you are in a call for say 30 mins just think how much battery that would suck out. And for me, for no good reason, when I'm on the phone I don't need the screen, that is why the proximity sensor exists, to turn the screen on and off
I understand, but you have to understand how the lcd works. Producing colours or tints cause the device to use more power. The brighter the colour the more power. Since white is the brightest tint or colour, whichever you prefer, black being the opposite would use the least amount of power for the screen being on. Unless this is a type of lcd matrix that uses most power with black I read about that before somewhere. But I highly doubt SE would do that. But considering its a concern of yours there might be an dialer app that negates this hmm.
At the Sony Ericssons products Blog there was a video about the new features at 2.1
It tells also that you could press the Power-Button to turn off the light during calls.
I´ve not testet this yet, maybe of you could test this. ;-)

It does not take a second or 2 for the screen to come back on. Just test it yourself by pressing the power button, it comes on within 1 second. On a side note, in the 1.6 days the screen would stay on completely and if you press the power button it hangs up. That was a terrible implementation.

Im on 2.1, cant check it anymore. It was rather sluggish for me on 1.6. The difference may be that I had pictures for all my contacts. I like it just fine.
Yes, you can turn the screen completely off by pressing power button, I've just tried. I don't understand why do I have to do it with my finger when I have proximity sensor that works just fine when it wakes up the screen from complete power off when I move it from my face. Seems like a bug to me.
LCD screen consumes the same amount of power no matter what image it is showing, black or white, so as far as I'm concerned showing black screen during a call does absolutely nothing for me, especially not for my battery. This is so trivial that I can't believe they missed it. Or maybe some SE engineer thought X10 has AMOLED screen so it doesn't consume power when it's displaying black...
Personally, I prefer the screen turn off compared to the screen lock in 1.6 as I had a hard time unlocking the screen lock when you need to use the dial pad when on the phone.
So when you are on the phone, the screen turns off and when you move your phone away from the ear, the screen turns on.

You are 100% correct, my mistake, lcds do use the same amount of power due to the backlight. I was just on the phone for 50 minutes and my battery went down by 5%, so i think its not bad at all. I was even on wcdma/gsm.

Well, maybe I'm exaggerating, but this kind of screen backlight beahaviour just isn't logical to me. You say you lost 5% on 50 min call? Hmm, that really seems low...

Whenever my screen is on, the button backlight are on at max. They stay on at max the entire time the screen is on.
I am running the initially available EB01 firmware. Are there any changes to the button backlight brightness or a timeout, in any other rom?
Long story: Whenever I use my phone in the car, after a while, the buttons start acting as though they are being pressed and held down or randomly pressed. The backlights will start blinking and going nuts. It appears to be heat related. I'm thinking that area of the phone would run a touch cooler if the button lights weren't on. It may not matter, but there is zero reason to leave those lights at max brightness full time.

I'm thinking that the driver for the lights, and the extra battery load, aren't helping me much.
Today, I was only able to use the GPS for about 10 minutes at a time. I peeled off the screen protector that I had, and the skin on the back cover. That appeared to help a little. Removing the back cover completely does help.

So I figured I would post this up just in case people are going crazy about turning on their display, and then having it turn right back off on them lol. There are sensors at the top of the device by the ear speaker. When turning on the device make sure your fingers remain clear of those sensors for 1 second, if those sensors do not pick up light source by being blocked off (try it, press the power button while covering the sensors), the display will turn back off. Same thing goes for Knock on, the display wont even turn on at all. Keep your fingers clear of those sensors!
I dont think this is a design flaw I think LG inadvertently did this to keep from the device from turning on in your pocket by accidentally hitting power on knocking on while in your pocket. it might also attribute to poor knock on feature in low light areas or night time.

There's also a bug which emulates the same symptoms,while the sensor is not blocked. Changing the screen-off effect to different effect, is a work around for those caught with the issue.

Its interesting that LG went with this sensor design. This sensor thing is kinda weird seeing as people will no doubt block this sensor and trigger this effect without even realizing what they are doing, making people think their device is broken. LOL im sure this is talked about in the instruction guide but who the heck reads those things now?

Recently, I was using this tablet to play a video under "Stamina mode" and all other energy saving features turned on in Settings/Power Management and discovered a phenomenon that I don't know previously.
A phenomenon was observed, the display shuts itself off at random times when and only when the device is being held up-side-down.
Turning off "Stamina mode" and this phenomenon does not reappear.
I can not think of any reason why this should occur and not when the device is held in any other orientation.
This tablet's screen can be turned on/off with a magnet in cover.
However, if the user decides to relax and use the tablet while up-side-down, I don't see the intelligent side of this in Stamina mode while device is held up-side-down.
Really, try it out on your tablet, this phenomenon is hysterical and quite annoying.
Do you use the tablet up-side-down?
And do you think this is a reasonable feature?

yes i have noticed it i thought i was going mad.... but i have repeated it several times.. i quite often rest the tablet upside down under my nose to watch the tv then i flip it back up and the screens turned off.!! i thought i must have bumped the power switch or something, but I've repeated it several times now... very odd if is a feature. it's like flip to sleep or something...
i just had a thought maybe in stamina mode it turns this on.... flip to turn off or it's the eye ball tracking thingy when it can't see you looking at the screen it turns it off.....
just had a look in display settings its called smart back light control. but its not turned on.. so it's not that.
must just be the tilt sensor is enabled to turn the screen off when it's tilted flat on it's face..

I have experimented with this several times. It depends on whether or not the device has moved or stationary.
Since, this only happens face down, so it is annoying.
So, it's like telling you not to lying on your back to watch a Firework show using Stamina mode for example.
If you lay the device face down on a table using Stamina mode it will turn off the screen shortly after obviously to save energy.
And if it is held up-side-down it turns off the screen randomly as it detects no motion. So, the user isn't likely to continuously shake the device while looking at the device up-side-down for any reason.
While running for the train today, my trusty OPO decided to wiggle out of my pocket and fall onto the road. Didn't realise until I was halfway across the street, turned around and saw my phone on the road getting run over by another car. Screen is smashed in as expected, no display etc. Fortunately, after further testing, phone seems to be still alive, as it still rings when receiving notifications and calls. Power button seems to be working given the fact that if I hold it for long enough, I can feel it vibrate and see the backlight briefly illuminate, indicating that the phone is restarting. Volume buttons on the other hand, seem much less responsive, requiring significant pressure to activate, but still work to some extent.
These are the only signs of life that are coming from the phone. From this description, I would say that the phone is pretty much fully functional, however, there are certain things that are bothering me right now. The notification light is occasionally blinking red, which from my experience is something that only happens when the phone is low battery, which I am pretty sure is not the case here. Also, I can only see the backlight light up for the brief moment that the phone is restarted. The backlight does not light up at all if I just press the power button to wake the phone up from sleep.
As a poor uni student, I would much prefer it if I could keep the phone and just replace the screen, but if the blinking red notification light and unresponsive backlight is anything serious, please advise on what I should do.
Is it detected if you hook it up to a PC? Considering the age of the phone I would not throw good money after bad. I loved mine, but got a deal from my ISP for an S7 and gave it to my girlfriend who still has it. It's a great phone, but if you suspect anything besides the screen it might not be worth fixing. Take it to a shop and let them look at it. Parts might be difficult to come by as well. It wouldn't hurt to give OnePlus a call, they might be able to help you out.
Yes it is detected, everything seems fine apart from the blinking red notification light and its inability to wake the screen from sleep.
As for bringing it in to a shop, I must say that it would be almost impossible to find a shop that has heard of the OPO, given that it was never officially sold in Australia. Repairing the screen will be my own DIY job.
