SD cards - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

does any one know if i store mp3 files or movies on an sd card and put it in my XDA can i play them on the XDA?

sureyou can play mp3's and wmv's (video) on xda's media player. other audio and video formats can be played but may need extra sod=ftware. you can tranfer file thru actisync to the can (slow) or invest in a USB to SD card adapter 20 quid ish and drag files over quicker.
how about this forum sharing video files in xda format?? (as in wmv)
is wmv the best format... if not what is best quality but still low file size???
I've put the office and alan partridge on mine.........

I use the free download from www.pockettv.com it is brilliant for mpeg files there are links there also for free download of short films/animations etc, try killer bean 2, it is brilliant

and here is, how to convert movies for the the MDA / XDA:

mpegs / video on xda

Super site guys. however, I'm not a great techie so I got lost in space. Am I right in saying have perused the site that you can increase the memory/
secondly, i'm trying to play video clips on the XDA and recently purchased a 250meg secure digital card for this purpose. i loaded down pocketmvp but suffer from a streaming/buffering effect when I attempt to play an mpeg piece. Most mpegs I have tried are at least 100+ in size. any suggestions? The mpegs have been created from a media 100 system, transferred to Cleaner and compressed to mpeg format.
DVD says any help would be appreciated and let me know about the memory bit.

You need to use a program such as TMPGEnc to recode the file to a lower bitrate and screen size. I have done a few eg Blade 2 will fit onto a 256mb SD card (The whole film) and plays fantastic.
Go to www.vcdhelp.com to find out about TMPGEnc. There is a link there to download it also.
Send me an email to [email protected] & I'll send you a sample file.
Also the RealOne player is excellent for streaming video.

Movie Coverter

I was just curious if anyone knew where I could find software that will convert regular movies into pocket pc format so the size isn't so great. Thanks
Nevermind I think I found it if its the pocket tv program. Thanks
Try the Movie Maker in Windows, you can convert to any size you want, including options for Pocket PC
I use the Media Player Encoder for windows, very good, *.wmv files for pocket pc media player.
go to www.projectmayo.com, check the forums and read, read read.....
get VirtualDub to convert and PocketMVP to play your movies.
I just watched my first entire movie in the train the other day, from a 256MB SD card.

How to play mp3 and movie files with windows media 8.5?

Hi
I wonder if anyone can tell me... how to play mp3 files and movie files say avi , mpg etc with the new windows media 8.5? I don't seem to be able to use the xda to play a simple mp3 file after I use activesync to transfer the file into the xda. It may a be simple software problem or do I need special codecs for these files to be played?
Sorry if it is a silly question.
Cheers
Hi, if you have the pocket pc 2002, and windows media player 8.5, you should be able to play mp3 files without any issue.
Try downloading a small mp3 file from the net to check. sometimes, if you dont have an SD card, and only a limited memory, and you try and copy a large mp3 to your xda, it cuts off half way when you run out of storage memory. This leaves your file corrupted, and hence you cant play it.
Close all your running apps. Adjust your memory settings, to increase storage area. Choose an mp3 file that is much smaller than available space (eg. ringtone from some website) and copy that to your xda.
Thanks
Hi
Thanks very much for your reply. Thot nobody is interested to answer a silly question like that. Indeed I think the mp3 file I tried to play is corrupted. Got windows media player to play other smaller mp3 files after your advice. However, can windows media player play mpg files at all? Always seem to get message that the movie file cannot be played.
Thanks again.

Hi
cant remember if media player 8.5 can play mpgs. However if you install pocket divx player, you should be able to play most file formats. Ofcourse it wont play all mpgs, or all avis, it depends on the codecs used, however common ones, especially divx are playable.

Just to let you know, Media player 8.5 can't play mpeg.
PocketTV is another alternative.
movie file size
HI
Thanks for info. Installed both pocket tv and divx and both are great. Only thing is size of movie files are too big. I have tried using VirtualDub to play around with movie compression but still hasn't found the optimal size to reduce a movie to be sensible for use in pdas. What is the screen size and how else besides the screen size can one use to reduce movie file size?
Cheers
Some good guides here:

Hi
In virtual dub, you need to ensure that you are specifying a codec for video compression AND audio compression.By default virtualdub does not compress the audio, hence the file tends to be quite large.
You may want to install some more audio codecs to give you a better compression. Try installing the WMA codecs, or get Windows Media player 9 on your system.
WMA codes
Hi
Thanks for replies. I have Windows Media 9 on my system; how to use it to get the audio compression with Virtual Dub?
Cheers
Vic
in the audio menu on virtuadub, you need to select Full Processing Mode. Then the compression option will become selectable. You can then pick an audio codec. Be aware not all audio codecs will be available on your xda. Use Windows Media Audio codecs, have a look at:

movies on the mda

what file does the windows media player play on our mda for videos/movies? and where can i download/purchase these movies to play on my mda? thanks for the info.
Movie Files On The MDA
I assume you have at least a 1GB MiniSD card for your MDa otherwise, do not bother with watching movies on it. As for the file extension, it should be pretty much the same ones that are played on a PC Windows media (.wmv) without using plugins. However, the MDA has DivX software you can download, which enables you to watch a larger range of movies or video clips (.avi etc). Hope this helps.

The file is 1.4 giga and for some reason when I tried to copy the to my s3 it also crashed (in the past I could transfer to the s3)
a lot of my anime and tv shows are in mkv format but they are pretty small in size and i have no trouble playing them with mx player. i might try a larger file and get back to you.
Edit: i transfered a 13.1GB file to my XTZ "The Hobbit, An unexpected Journey 1080p" x264 .mkv file (bearing in mind whenever you transfer something to your XTZ at least in my case, it will warn you the file may need to be converted to play on your device) and i played it using mx player at first it complained i needed a custom codec to play audio because of "dts" which i went and downloaded but the movie was still playing without audio and looked fine. After installing the codec i tried playing the movie again and it was working perfectly.
If you cant transfer the files have you tried a different usb cable to connect your XTZ to your computer or even tried using an sd card reader (if your using an sd card) ?
I'm having the same issues and can't figure it out. Smaller files around 25 mb transfer fine. Larger files like my tv shows, which are 1+ gb, crash windows explorer every time. Yet I can transfer the same files without problem using OTG and a thumbdrive. I'm running stock (4.12) on an SGP312. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx!
To the OP, mkv files play on the stock player but you wont get any audio if the audio format is AC3. Try downloading the vmplayer from google play. Works for me.
*** Also I tried a different cable and had the same results.
If watching anime, MX Player and BSPlayer are great options. I prefer to use MX Player because it renders perfectly .ass and .saa styled subtitles. Also the Hardware Plus (HW+) decoding works great. Only thing that won't be fully playable would be 10-bit color encodes that are getting popular among subbing groups, as this is due to hardware limitation, and software decoding is slow as heck with that format. So, anime in 8-bit and 1080p should run flawless.
For any other type of vids contained in mkv, MX Player and its HW+ decoder is also the one to go with. I play huge (+10GB) FullHD mkv files with no stuttering at all.
I used XTZ 32GB for all these tests.

I had no issues transferring large files (up to 8GB) over USB to my SGP312. Might be a driver issue in your Windows version. I am using Windows 8 64bit myself.
That being said, I am now solely using the app Wifi File Transfer Pro to send data wirelessly to my Tablet. It is not as fast as USB, but much more convenient.
Download some other media players for your tablet like VLC, MX players. If they can not help you achieve the goal, then I am afraid that you need to encode your videos into MP4 format via a third party programs inclucing Handbrake or Brorsoft Video Converter.
