Dear all,
Is it possible to backup and restore the SMS database? If so, how can this be done?. Thank you.

Kueh.

Hi,
Thanks for the help. I need a more reliable way to backup and restore just the SMS. The rest can be rebuild via outlook. Anyone else have alternative ideas. Thanks.

Smartphone Studio
I use an older version of Smartphone Studio.
http://smartdev.51.net/
It doesn't seem to be available anymore though.
Hi,
I have tried with the smartphone studio but when I try to install the commMan.cab in the XDA II it gives an error saying that the program cannot be installed. .

same here...
Maybe, just maybe I will have to buy smsbackup or sprite ?
I wish some nice solution (like a reg. hack) could be suggested that makes you copy the sms files...
G.
Try extracting CommMan.exe.0804.mui and CommMan.exe from the CAB file using Windows CE CAB Manager. http://www.ocpsoftware.com/products.php?nm=cecabmgr
Then copy those two files to your XDA2 and run CommMan. If it works, while connected to Activesync, start SPStudio.exe on the desktop. That should do it... UNLESS you've done a restore recently and your SMS account is corrupted. I've been in the situation where CommMan wouldn't run because I had done a restore of the Inbox accounts and the SMS account was corrupt.
Dear Adam,
Thanks for the instructions. I worked alright. Now the million dollar question? Will I be able to restore after a hard reset. Will keep you posted. Thanks again.
Regards,
Kueh
Dear all,
The Smartphone Studio works with XDA II. Here is how I did it.
1) Export the SMS Inbox as backup file.
2) Hard Reset.
3) Establish connection via ActiveSync but disable all sync option except "Files"
4) copy the commMan.exe file across to the XDA II.
5) Run the PC site studio software.
6) Import the backup file in step 1 into the inbox of XDA.
There you have it. I would like to record my appreciation to all those who have helped to make this happen. Thank you.
Regards,
Kueh.
Unfortunately, my SMS account is corrupt, How to solve this without losing my Messages?
You can restore the other databases with Sprite Backup. Just don't restore ANY Inbox accounts. If you do, this will corrupt your inbox and Smart Phone Studio will not work properly (it will probably restore your SMS messages into you Activesync folder or something like that.) Also forget about using the Activesync Backup/Restore.
If your SMS account is already corrupt, I have found no way to backup the SMS messages recieved. I had this happen to me as well. The solution was to do a hard reset, but obviously this lost all my post-corruption SMS messages. Some have suggested using a database editor to access the messages, but I havn't figured out how to do that.
What about this SMS export program?
Lets try this SMS/MMS/Email export program which exports messages automatically onto Storage. http://xpocketpc.fw.hu

I have a problem with my SMS folder.
It is showing that I have unread messages but the folder is empty.
I know I have recieved messages that I have not read.
Is there a way to read them/export/import them with something else before I hard reset to fix the problem?
Where are they stored and in what format?
Thanks.

mindracing:
If you have restored a backup file using Sprite backup recently this would result in you seeing the read/unread SMS/Email messages without physical data... the only fix that they have come up with is a program to reset all data in your poutlook database, unfortunately erasing your data for good EVEN your email accounts that are present. Their file is attached and is to be ran on the PPC... KNOWING that it will RESET your Pocket Outlook to "factory" defaults, but in turn solve your problem. I think that there was a program to backup SMS messages, maybe you could look into it and see if it helps you before erasing them?
If you have not restored from a backup recently - I cannot help for I do not know.
- Cheers
Thanks,
Yes I have restored from a back-up.
Thanks for your help.
Hey
I have found I have the same problems myself (its why I dont use xBackup). However if your backup file was made with Sprite Backup then simply install the latest version on your device, then load it and open the backup file from the program (even if its self extracting). It will use the new restore functionality that fixes the problem. (After restoring the raw messages it 'patches' them.)
If your backup was made in a different program then your probably not going to be able to get the messages back easily or at all. The best option here is to simply manually copy them by hand if you can access them at all. I tried the ClearMail program once when I had a poor backup and it cleared everything but the bad texts!! Needed a hard reset. You can try using programs such as "SMS Cool!" and "Jeyo Mobile Companion" but I got connection error messages when I had a corrupted inbox.

I had the same problem restoring emails and SMS from sprite backup files myself until I upgraded to version 3.13. Seems like the problem has been resolved.
If you have your original backup files, the latest version should patch the mail database correctly and allow you to view the restored SMS.
Hope that helps.
FYI, WM2003SE is using this app Tmail.exe for the SMS. It is located in /Windows directory.
i had this when i used x back up and no matter what i did when i tried to text i would set it to use sms account but it would still try to use activesync account, so i restored an even older back up then restored the one that went funny and it worked fine. its done that twice and thats fixed it both times
Cleanmail fixed my problems.... but no I have no MMS database/inbox
anyone know how to rebuild it ?
thnx
mms after backup
I had this prob a while back when upgrading rom. I was unable to open mms App. Problem was when active sync runs it copied old files. if you delete the "mms ua" folder that is saved in my docs, uacontents. this gets rid of any messages you had b4 but you will be able to get into app.
hope this helps
solved it by restoring MMS folders from a backup..
Never loose your SMS again
You can save all your SMS/MMS onto your Storage Card. http://xpocketpc.fw.hu
really looking forward to an import feature
and please make that program work from Storage card !
it will also be more logical to run from storage card when you add "inport" feature ... than it can be used as backup/restore.
Bugfix Storage Card running.
I'm working on it.

I'm using Sprite Backup 3.1.4 and still I experience this kind of problem (error in messages specially in Activesync emails) every time I restore my backup.
Is there a way to fix this or is there a newer version of Sprite Backup?
I don’t know which backup tool is better. SunnySoft or Sprite backup?
Use spriteback to backup anything except messaging and use sunnysoft or dopod SMS backup to backup messaging.

releasing "new version" befare the current one is working is like saying " ok what I bought is not working as advetised, so now i give you more money to fix that bug and buy version 4, meybe now you will deliver ?"

Um.. well you have a point.. you can blame sprite if they released a new version and they wanted us to pay again for upgrade then i think its against the law.. ill try to contact sprite.. btw, does the problem on messaging is writen on their website telling that "warning: this current version of sprite is still sh!t in restoring messaging"??
no they do not warn people
and : Sprite backup does NEVER restore MMS contents correctly on blue-angels. (they know and confirmed it)
AND:
if you try to restore only SMS or any other single DB, then the new, blang MMS DB will be corrupted and useless.
They know that too.
LOL.
No they don't have any warning in their website. the only thing you can see in their web site are:
Features
Benefits
BUY NOW
And no trial although they have this "Instead of offering a trial version, we provide a 30 day Money-back Guarantee. This is because we do not expect users to evaluate the application by removing all their data and then restoring it."
I will try to help!...

I have 2 programs to store massage only
i find them and tell you there;-)
One of them is PIM Backup and it is a good programe
it is freeware and in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
another programe that i have, can store messege in text format file, but i can't remember the name of it sorry
Ok, thanks.
I'll give PIM Backup a go.
However, I've already done a backup using SpriteBackup and upgraded to a new ROM. So, ideally, I'd like to be able to extract the messages from the backup file.
Of course, if that's not possible, I'll have to flash back to the previous ROM, restore the backup, extract the msgs using PIM backup, flash back to the current ROM, and copy the msgs back. Phew!
R.
use sprite explorer (free download from sprite backup software )if you used sprite to backup and restore pim.vol??? maybe, can't really remember the name of the file...Did you try google? i know pim.vol includes contacts, etc not real sure about text msg's never really had a need to keep sms

Aha, that's the sort of information I was looking for - I've had a look through the backup using Sprite Explorer but I had no idea what the name of the file containing the msgs might be.
I'll take another look.
In the meantime, if anyone knows the name and location of the file(s) containing the msgs (text and MMS) it would help me greatly if you could let me know!
Thanks,

No, I'm not. I guess the only way to find out is to restore a backup and see if the msgs are there.
If not, I shall rant at the makers of SpriteBackup and re-think my backup strategy!!
Fortunately, I'm not all that bothered about the msgs - I can manage without them.
Thanks for your continued interest in my petty problems!

Hey guys...
I've got a new annoing problem with my HD2... (official Firmware)
I just updated my phone with the new 3.14 Firmware and restore my Data with spb-Backup... everything seems to work fine, BUT my HD2 won't save the sms history in the contacts now.
If I get a new sms I see it normally in the messaging tab, but if I want to answer in the message window of the contact it won't show ANY sms - not even my own sended ones.
The inbox menu in traditional mode works normally and shows any received sms.
Hope you understand me, my english is not the best.
Any ideas?
No ideas? I don't want to hardreset my phone again...
maybe backup of SMSes with PIM Backup, then deleting all messages and restore back could help?
I have the same problem on my hd2. If I switch to "traditional mode" The history is showing, but not in "conversation mode" (Don't know if that's what its called in English)
It happened after I updated the rom to the latest official HTC ROM. (3.14)
It's really annoying
happened to have the same problem today, tested PIM Backup, helped with mine:
1. install PIM Backup
2. backup only Messages
3 restore Messages:
- "Text Messages" checked, below that "Conversations" box unchecked (not sure if it's necessary), "Inbox" and "Sent Items" checked
- Message restore options: Delete all existing messages from the Database
4. soft reset

try repeating the above procedure with one addition - delete contents of Windows\Messaging folder after step 2,
I'm not sure if and how it affects stored email messages so it could be a good idea to make full backup first if you keep any important emails

I had the same problem. The problem is when you restore your messages using PIM Backup, 3.14 does not sense the messages at all. I personally think the new 3.14 loads sms's to another folder than before thus we can't see it under threaded but when you look at traditional it shows all the pervious messages meaning it might be in a sub-directory in the folder. Just an idea.
To my knowledge there is no way of getting it to show in all your messages. I would recommend just to delete all your messages and start from scratch or load another rom, maybe 2.07 or something.
I can speak only for myself, but for me PIM Backup + deleting files in Windows\Messaging folder works - tested it few times just to be sure.
On my device restoring the messages with PIM backup brings back files in this folder, and then SMS threads reapear.
It looks like if the SMS thread information was stored in all the files inside Windows\Messaging - I wonder if anyone could confirm this?
My messages folder is empty, and I also tried to delete all messages including the folder to see if the new messages would line up in conversation mode without restoring any messages, but it didn't help.
I'll try a hard reset once I've made a backup of everything except my messages. If that doesn't work I might consider downgrading the ROM.

I don't know, off the top of my head, if that will work. However, here are a lot of options to backup the PIM info (email, contacts, text and SMS messages, etc.) on your WM device in preparation for a Hard Reset.
If you do a search in the Windows Mobile Development and Hacking Forum for "pim backup" you will find many, many solutions.
In my opinion, 2 of the most popular (and useful) programs are:
- Microsoft's My Phone is a free service that allows you to backup all of you email, text messages, contacts, etc. (up to 200MB) to the web. you can them sync them all back to the device after you hard reset. It also allows you to schedule the backup so it is almost always up to date.\
- DotFred's PIM Backup tool allows you to backup your appointments, emails, SMS, etc. It also lets you do 2 things that MS My Phone does not... you can backup your call logs and speed dials as well (this is something My Phone does not do). It can also run on a schedule, but the backups are stored on your device (main memory or on the storage card) not on the web.
Cheers!
Can any of the Viber users or soft dev guru help on this little problem.
I love Viber and I love my SGS2, now after few months of owning and learning, I want to start playing around specifically changing my Rom and what not.
Now my problem is i have 13,000+ exchange messages with my GF on viber and I really wanna keep it, as i understand that when I change my Rom I have to do a data wipe and all. I know there's a backup/restore function but is there a guarantee that i can restore Viber with all the messages still there?
Can someone provide a walk around? I have tried google for solution and used the search here but there was nothing except the android team saying its something that they "might" incorporate in the future - that's backing up of the messages.
I hope other users are on the same ship with me here. thanks in advance...
It is posible via Titanium backup, but you need get root on your SGS2 first.
On a rooted phone copy the /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages file to sd-card or whatever.
After new install, put the file back, make sure it has the right permissions and do a compleate restart of Viber.
Done and done.
(Its very lazy of Viber to not include a backup-functionality of messages, as this is SQLite databases that could very easily be dumped out to disc and imported)

I have the same problem with backup and restore old Viber messages. I managed to backup (or rather email messages history) from my old HTC Desire but could not restore them on my new Samsung S3). What's the use of backup without restore function?
Oh! I can't find /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages on SD card too. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Copying the database doesn't work for me. Here's what happens:
When I make a fresh installation of viber and replace the empty (fresh) /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages database file with my backup (old) one, viber crashes every time I launch it. I was careful to set permissions to rw- rw- --- as the fresh file has them.
What can I do - maybe export the records in the backup db file and reimport them into the fresh one?
If the previous question has no easy answer, at least can someone tell me what's happening so I can try to figure out an alternative approach?

I have the exact same problem. Once upon a time, I had an older version of the software saved on TiBu which I was able to restore and the messages stayed to the right person. Unfortunately, I don't have that version or backup anymore. I just downloaded another older version of the software from a thread here on XDA and I'm about to install it and see if it fixes the messages list problem...
Update: That version wouldn't open on my phone, it just FCed (could be because I'm running the vzw jellybean leak). Off to search for another version...

The file on the phone is an SQL Lite database.
Probably you could copy it to your PC, import the data, copy it back and have the database repaired.
I just restored the whole "com.viber.voip/databases" folder, and it works perfectly. all messages etc are there.
Hello I also have a problem with backuping my Viber messages.
Today I've done a software update. I'm using Samsung I9105P (SGS II+ with NFC). The update was from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2. I did a normal copy of data\data\com.voip.viber\ and full app+data backup with Titanium Backup.
So this is what happens:
Everytime I restore data with Titanium the app starts normally and then I'm always asked to type in my phone number and the activation code. Before doing that all messages do exist. I know that because I am able to close these dialog windows with "back button" and look on the messages but I'm unable to normally use viber (I mean send and recieve msgs). After applying the activation code the message tab appears without any message. It happens like this everytime.
I also tried to just paste the "databases" folder or just the "viber_messages" file but both of these actions end with appcrash and then i need to reinstall it or just back up data with titanium (and then it's all the same as I wrote above - I mean activation code etc.).
I have several thousands of messages and I don't really want to lose them. Especially looking on the fact, that I've restored up my viber messages for a few times when I've been using Samsung Galaxy S (i9000) and also transferred them on this phone.
Any ideas for a solution? I'd be grateful. :fingers-crossed:
Same problem here! I can see the messages at first (after restoring APK + data from titanium or mybackuppro), but Viber wipes them when it asks me to reactivate. This whole thing is a mess. Anyone know a possible solution? I also have lots of messages that are important and I would like to restore.
I have exactly the same problem with the one the two last users are dealing with.
As soon as i got updated to Android 4.3 and restored Viber and its data with Titanium Backup, the first time i run Viber i can see my messages for 1 or 2 secs and then activation screen appears. After finishing app's activation i can't see my messages anymore..

If you have a titanium backup, unzip the backup file and extract the viber_messages file and replace the one in /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages by root browser. It worked for me.

Have the exact problem with TB and activation process, messages are gone after activation, but i have the solution that worked for me:
In TB folder find com.viber.voip-(some numbers).tar archive
open \data\data\com.viber.voip\.\databases
find both "viber_messages" AND "viber_messages_journal" files
copy them to \data\data\com.viber.voip\databases on the phone
change permission for viber_messages to RW RW --
change permission for viber_messages_journal to RWX RW --
restart phone and that's it, you will have all your messages

Try to reboot phone, or delete cache in settings/applications/viber. For me everything is ok.
