Hi People,
I hope someone can help me solve a problem connecting a GPS receiver to my MDA. I'm working with Tom Tom and when I try to access the receiver on COM 1 I get an error "cannot connect to COM1, port does not exist". When the reciever is connected to a friends unit it works fine.
I see a couple of possibilities:
The serial port is broken.
Dirver problem. (I don't think so because I've updated to the newest ROM from T-Mobile)
Tom Tom problem (unlikely because I installed a different software with similar result).
Has anyone had similar problems? If the serial I/O buffer is def. can it be changed? I'm a technician but I don't have any circuit diagrams.
Is there any other way of hooking a serial receiver up to the MDA other then the serial port? TT offers the options Ser to usb, ser to ird, ser to com2 and com9. none of these work directly with the serial cable.
Thanks for any help I get.

Go to settings/connections/beams, make sure beams is unchecked. Also if you have an external keyboard driver present you need to deactivate it.
IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!
Thanks for the tip! Hours of talking to T-Mobile couldn't solve the problem. They suggested having my SIM card checked.
Cheers,
DB
Glad to be of service 8)

I am using an XDA2 with a newly upgraded 1.60.00WWE ROM and was really pleased to see the update to Bluetooth to allow serial connections in this release.
I have a fax application on my laptop and want to connect the comport on the laptop to the BT comport on the XDA2
I click on the new checkbox 'Inbound Com Port' and everything seems well.
If I set up a dialup networking connection to an ISP, or try to fax, the port opens successfully but no data is passed from the XDA back to the PC, so the PC always thinks there is a hardware failure.
The same connection works well with a Nokia (but who wants to use a Nokia?
Anyone else having this problem, or can anyone offer some advice to get this running?
Mark.
O2 XDA2 on Orange
I have been using my XDA II for a few weeks very successfully with the TomTom3 navigator software and a GPS receiver connected to the serial port (on COM1). Then I decided to install the Bluetooth tools from http://bluetooth.i-networx.de to try and use my phone with a Nokia bluetooth car kit. Unfortunately it didn't work, but now COM1 is unavailable.
When I run my TomTom navigator, I now get the error message 'COM1 is unavailable', and I've noticed in ActiveSync that if I go File>Connection Settings, it shows COM1 as unavailable and greyed out in the selection box.
Performing a Hard Reset hasn't cured the problem.
Does anyone know how to make COM1 available again?
Have you check if infrared (beam) is disabled?
Thats in most cases the problem....

Can anyone tell me if TOMTOM 5 is compatible with the XDA?
When i say compatible, i dont mean will it install etc cos ive actually managed that no problem. What i mean is, has ANYONE found a GPS reciever that works with the XDA and TOMTOM 5 ? If so what settings did you use?
I have a RIKALINE GPS reciever, and TOMTOM 5. Ive tried what seems for ever to get the god damn thing working but no matter what settings i use, the TOM TOM 5 software refuses to acknowledge that i have a GPS reciever attached or even a signal.
I know the RIKALINE GPS reciever has a signal since ive watched the procedure it goes through in order to obtain it. I know what BAUD rate the GPS reciever needs, but i dont actually know how its connected to the PDA. Ie COM 9:, Serial Cable on COM1:, Serial on USB or Serial Cable on COM2 ?? I have tried them all but to now success. SO does anyone have a TOM TOM 5 installation guide or some information on what i should try next. Anything anyone can give me will be much appriciated. I really dont want to go back to TOM TOM 3 (which i have had working with all the above equipment)
Thanks in Advance
Hi there
Yes the XDA is fully compatible - but there are also conflicts you need to be aware of.
Go to START/SETTINGS/CONNECTIONS - select "BEAM" option - make sure that the box is UNCHECKED - as the infra red beam conflicts with the receiver!
On the TOMTOM program set the GPS receiver to TOMTOM CABLE GPS & away you go!
Let me know if you still can't get it working.
You'll need "Serial Cable on Com 1" Use Other Cable GPS receiver and set the baud rate and it should work once you've disabled the beam
I have a rebadged BT-R920 from semsons and i'm having trouble connecting it to wizard's bluetooth. The wizard recognizes the receiver but doesn't actually connect. a blinking blue light on the receiver should indicate the connection of the bluetooth but yeh nothing. anyways if anyone has this figured out i would appreciate it very much. thanks
in the bluetooth device page, theres a question mark icon and i made sure to use it as serial port.
Dont you need a subscription/service plan to use that?

Ive got a question mark icon near my BT receiver too, but it doesn't affect anything. The blinking blue light just means that the receiver is pumping a bluetooth signal not meaning it's connected though.
In Comm Menu open:
Settings/Bluetooth Settings/COM Ports/New Outgoing Port (use COM7 listed w/ receiver)
COM6 is for Incoming Port(nothing will be listed w/ it)
Open your GPS software and make sure that it lists COM7 as the COM Port, Baud Rate 4800. Happy Trails
Hi,
I'm sorry if this question was answered before. I've searched inside and outside of the forum for the answer in vain.
I'm trying to connect a Garmin eTrex H GPSr to my HTC Wizard. I know USB host controller is required (which is missing in Wizard) to connect any device via USB. Therefore I want to know if I can connect this GPSr (which has serial interface) to the Wizard through USB port or any other port. My understanding is that Wizard has a serial port (probably the UBS port) - I can also see a serial port using port scanning software.
If this was discussed earlier, please tell me so that I can search more.
Thanks a lot.
another way to do it
I was wondering, if the above method is hopeless - is there a way to virtually map Bluetooth serial port to the physical mini-USB port? Anybody knows a software that can do this?
