As a regular contributor to various motor car forums I am always amazed at how idiots destroy perfectly serviceable cars in an attempt to 'improve' them. Anyway - today, I am one of those idiots.
I recently purchased a QTEK 2020 which I got a bit cheap on account of it not having 'iMate' written on it. Before I get really into it and put software and stuff on it, I'd like to upgrade my ROM from 1.66 to 1.72, which I have found on this site. Do I have to go through all of the xda2nbftool stuff (which I more or less understand)? Presumably yes, to change the Operator (only?). I'm quite happy for the machine to think that it is an iMate, but presumably this does not work!
I am happy with my machine. It hasn't crashed yet. But it annoys me that it might not be quite as good as yours...
(I so feel like one of those people who wants to remove his cylinder head and replace it with pineapple's to make the engine run sweeter)
i dont really understand what you are asking
are you asking
1 about changing operator and so sim locking ?
2 are you asking if you need the pretty manual xda2nbftool way to upgrade xda2's ?
3 are you asking if it will work upgrading to 1.72 ?
1 you can sim unlock your device without changing rom
a rom never require you to use a special operator but the preset settings will be the operators who put out the rom
2 yes currently it's the only way with time people are likely to make it a bit more gui like the xdatools for xda1
3 it should work but some people are reporting issues with it or maybe that was the beta of 1.72
read about the exp of others in the posts about 1.72
Sorry - it's a simple question.
If I had an iMate I could just use the RUXXX upgrade without any fuss to upgrade to 1.72
However, I have a QTEK 2020. I guess therefore I have to use xda2nbftool to modify the operator name to QTEK - otherwise it will not work (despite the 2 devices being identical). I do not want to unlock a SIM or anything else (it is unlocked by default).
Just looking for confirmation of the above paragraph!
I read about the experience of others using the 'official' 1.72 and it seems okay (better battery life etc.)
Cheers
there are 2 errors i think which stop people from just flashing their xda2 flavor with any rom update in the form of an exe file
1 is country code error if the rom is released in one country it often have a block which will stop people from upgrading their another country xda2 with it, not sure why they do that
2 maybe a form of device block so you dont upgrade your qtek with the imate
i'm sure if you had an imate and the country code dident differ you would be able to upgrade without using xda2nbftool
with time a GUI tool like xdatools for xda1 will come and you'll be able to get around all these blocks without having to type
and such
If you want to upgrade your Qtek to Imate's 1.72 ROM, yes, you need to do all that stuff.
It's actually quite simple, the description on http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/HimalayaRomFlashing is full, accurate, and is actually suited to Qtek owners without changing a single instruction.
I flashed my device (though on the first go it ended up in a dead-ish screen and I had to re-flash) and it works swimmingly.
However, you might get somewhat nervous encountering such dead-ish screens; and for good reason, flashing is dangerous after all.
Perhaps it's best to wait for a Qtek upgrade, they seem to be holding back a bit, so perhaps they're waiting to integrate WM2003 Second Edition, which should be a much larger upgrade. Also, you'll still be covered by warrantee.
If you're having specific problems with your 1.6x ROM, it could conceivably be a good idea to upgrade to the iMate ROM (using the instructions on the wiki), but if you're not having any problems, or problems that also occur in 1.72, or which are a result of 3rd party software you're using; don't bother.
You are right that QTEK seem to be a little slow in releasing anything. In fact I can't find any detailed 'official' support on QTEK outside the pages of this forum. Their website appears to be in swedish and is of very little use!
The QTEKCorporation website doesn't even list the 2020! Strange, as I understand that HTC own QTEK.
Most vendors (Expansys for example) list the 2020 as 'discontinued' (which is how I managed to negotiate a big discount!)
I tried to gatecrash club-iMate but they didn't like my IMEI number, and when I asked why not they said that they don't support my device.
I don't really care (assuming that my machine never has a problem...) and is it seems to do everything I want it to, I'll wait before updating the ROM. Maybe something will come from QTEK eventually - although I am not sure from where!!
Cheers
well qtek were the first ones out with 1.66 it came on my device before most people had gotten 1.60

Who am I to contradict you? ;-)
Seriously: don't do the upgrade yet. Why?
- 1.72 has well-known problems. First, ClearType has become much worse - text just doesn't look as good as with older versions. Second, quite a few people report hangs that needed a hard reset (and cause a loss of all data). See, for example, the pages 45 - 50 of the PocketZenPhone thread in this forum. With my ROM version (1.60) I never had to hard-reset a single time. And I tried quite a few programs, some less buggy, some more buggy.
- also, although there are detailed instructions, things can always go wrong. And if that happens, you may need a bit of experience to sort them out. So wait a few more week, enjoy your device, read forums, and gain experience.
Cheers
Daniel
I have 1.72 for some time now and:
- it *never* crashed (I have to do soft reset from time to time like in any other release though, but no hang or anything)
- clear type is fixed. There's a post about a .cab to install which fixes the problem. ClearType is now great on 1.72
- my battery life improved over previous versions and I have a unit that can stand up to three days connected to my BT headset (a bluetrek G2) with me talking 2 to 3 hours a day and doing PDA stuff
so I would recommend you move on
Hi beljames, really I can understand you! I've almost destroyed a lot of good working car engines trying to "improve" them...
So: if you want to do this with your brand new QTEK 2020 go there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=9060
and read carefully.
All worked fine for me. I upgraded from 1.66 ITA to 1.70 EN and my QTEK works perfectly!
About the cleartype problem you can find a fix in this forum: it works too.
I've also added a N2Ox system and a small turbocharger... it's a little bit heavier, yes, but it runs like a rocket!
Good balanced opinions!!
I think I'll wait a while to see if it annoys me. One single hang and I'll upgrade. Screw it up in Ghana and you don't get a lot of 1 to 1 technical support!!
By the way - I find it far easier to read the screen with Cleartype switched off (and mine is 1.66). Cleartype makes me squint!
An Loxodont - assuming that you are Italian, you will be amused to hear that the one car I used to lunch very frequently was an Alfa 33. Used to blow the inlet manifold clean off almost weekly.

in defence of 1.72 then i have had both these issues with 1.66
Go for it....
Hi all,
just to let you know I also upgraded my Qtek 2020 from 1.66 to i-mate 1.72 following the "manual steps" to overryde the country code error and it works fine. The steps are simplier than it seems and i did it in 5 minutes. The upgrade itself is quite boring....it took almost one hour to complete the upgrade on all stacks.
One thing i can tell you: after the upgrade the device gets faster and it seems it has a "new" battery.
The cleartype prob is solved and forgotten with the right patch.
The only problem i still get is the stupid i-mate logo at startup and i can't seem to get rid of it. I want my old qtek logo back....
If i can give advise on this: Just go for it.....
Portuguese do it better....and we will win Euro2004 !

maybe this guide can help you get your old pic or a new and more fancy one as bootImage

I just bought a orange spv m3100 from ebay and am waiting for it to arrive, probably around wednesday, at which time i will reflash it with wm6 black shadow. Anyways, im also getting a new pc and ps3, so im getting a bluetooth keybaord, as it can work with both. I was wondering if it will work out of the box with the refalshed tytn.this may seem like a stupid question, but i think its relevant.
thanks in advance
rory
I used my microsoft bluetooth keyboard with my TyTn with orginal rom no problem. In fact it was harder to get it to work with the PC!
Hi all
I just wanted your views on what to do with my Qtek 8500.
I'm about to buy a brand new Qtek 8500 sim free for £65.
I just wanted to know exactly how i should proceed in regards to upgrading it to the latest ROM and WM6 with the newest radio for the best coverage. This includes any spl things and CID unlocking (though i do wonder is it CID unlocked due to it being sim unlocked?)
Any thoughts and suggestions on how i proceed would be greatly welcomed.
Thanks all
Dan
Had a look around and decided to get a I-mate smartflip, now from what i have read its the exact same as a Qtek 8500 except the name on the front and a few screens and software changes but still the same WM5.
However as this has a smaller ROM as the 3125, will installing the clean edition of the WM6 rom here work well or will the phone be really really slow?
I'm aware i will have to CID unlock the phone and that looks simple according to this forum but any points on how to flash the new radio also off the WM6 page would be helpful.
Thanks
Hey, good to here another joining in the STRTRK parade lol
I got the Qtek 8500 from expansys about a week ago to supplement my tytn 2 (for the £65 bargain!) and have since cid unlocked and installed Erofish's WM6 rom, the latest version also includes Office 6.1 which is very handy, I thoughrally recommended it, it runs very fast and very stable, its made the phone so much better. with just windows mobile 5 it felt old and horrid but now it feels great, its even a bit faster. I'd go for it, the grace of winmo 6 is great
I've just updated my MTeoR to WM6 and thats brought it back into life too. thanks for replying, as a new user i am insterested to see what you think of the battery life?
As a previous windows smartphone user i am used to charging up the phone every night, is that something we have to get used to with the StrTrk ?
thanks again
My 3125 lasted 3-4 days between charges, with moderate use. If you are talking 4-5 hours a day on ANY cell phone you will probably have to charge it daily. Also, there are two battery sizes (I don't know which size the 8500 has). The larger battery has a back cover that is not completely flat. This is the battery I had (standard on the 3125). The small battery will probably only last 2/3 as long.

Qtek 8500 has 750mAh battery
Cingular 3125 has 1100mAh battery
Mine arrived today and I got WM6 on it... following the various guides here - only to discover that the internal speaker doesn't work!
did you buy a qtek 8500 or the smartflip as its cheaper?
also which WM6 did you go for? the one with working GPRS or the other one that doesn't work with GPRS ?
I bought the qtek as the imate wasn't on expansys list yesterday... and I went for the Gnatgosplat light rom - and gprs worked fine on that.
Mines arrived, i am pleased with it, didn't realise that the keypad was so huge but overall impressed. just gotta find the time to put WM6 on it now.
Just pruchased a 950 mAh battery off ebay for my new imate smartflip, which i love by the way!!
anyone got one of these batteries running and if so how much more charge can i expect over the 750mAh?
thanks
Okay so I recently purchased an i-mate Spartphone I have a couple of questions that I couldn't find thru the search feature.
1st I was wondering is the phone I have a Qtek 8500 (I think thats what I read on here) it only says imate on the outside and smartflip below the inner screen and say's imate on loading.
2nd when I use the camera all I see is static no picture... is there a way to fix this or should I load a different rom? I am thinking of running the rose or neo rom anyways (I have to get on my home computer and do the unlocks first I believe)
3rd I am also new to Winmo phones so I was wondering if there was any nice apps that anyone could point me towards.
Thanks in advance

The phone is made by HTC but is also sold as other names such as i-mate smartflip.
I have an i-mate smart flip that I purchased on e-bay and was able to use the camera just fine with the original WM5 ROM. Though I must admit that after upgrading the ROM to Erofoch's Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional for HTC StarTrek the camera works even better with the camera night mode option.
This version of WM6 works amazing on this phone, it also has BatteryStatus set up with safe and quick overclocking.
It took me a while to figure out all the steps, there is so much great information in this forum that it can be a bit overwhelming. I was directed to this wiki web page which outlines the ROM upgrade process step by step. http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index...Trk_ROM_Update
For the Mobile 6.1 Pro ROM that I installed I only had to stop at step 2 because this ROM does the rest.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Rudydb.
Okay I installed the Rose Rom by pampooh??(probably mispelled hope does not offend) anyways still just static on the camera not a huge deal for me I have a different camera phone for that purpose just was hoping it would fix it may be that I just got one with a bad camera but oh well
Yep, sounds like a bad camera. In general, when there is a driver issue, you will either get an error message when you launch the camera, or else a blank screen, but definitely not static.
iMate, Startrek, 3185, and a few other names are all the same phone. HTC sells the phone to Cellular carriers, and they can name it whatever they want. With the phone nerds here at XDA, the easiest way to refer to it is as "StarTrek", since this was the HTC code name for the phone. All the phones are basically alike, except for the Cingular/AT&T 3185, which has a larger battery, and twice the ROM (64MB instead of 32MB). You can buy the extended battery and associated back plate on eBay if you want it. All the versions of the phone run the same software and operating systems.
Software:
Tons of good software out there. What you will like is a matter of opinion. I can't live without:
1. Microsoft Voice Command 1.6 - Gives you text to speech, and awesome voice recognition.
2. Coreplayer - An actual working media player for the phone (not crappy like WMP).
3. Replacement calandar/tasks program - Tons out there, but I don't like the MS one.
4. Games - Again, find ones you like.
It's been a couple years since I have been on this forum; I sold my old 8500 which was running the Dopod rom I had bought prior to Cingular releasing the 3125 officially in the States and have been using a Moto Q on AT&T's towers ever since. I have grown tire of carrying my big brick every day and am looking to move back into a Star Trek as a backup phone and ocassional carry.
While at one time I was pretty up on all the specs of the various phones, life has taken a turn which doesn't allow me the luxery of studying up on everything. I had forgotten the differences in Star Trek models and may have made a mistake and jumped the gun to quickly while playing on eBay. I bought an unused, Imate SmartFlip the other night over the various 3125's available, partly for the price, but also I am not a fan of the Cingular branding.
In researching flashing the phone to WM6.0, I realized that the 3125 came standard with more memory than the IMate. I do have access to an old 3125, but it isn't unlocked and it has it's share of scratches.....
So, my questions are ---
1. Is it a straight flash to flash the IMate with the Cingular WM6.0 Rom? As posted here
2. What if any obsticles will I have other than space limitations?
3. Would there be any benefit to Flashing the Cingular phone over the Imate, other than space?
4. Since my ultimate goal is to have an unlocked, clean (un scratched) and clean installed WM flip phone, would it be practical to unlock the old 3125 and transplant the guts to the Imate case.
All-and-all, I have less than $50 invested in both phones. I am looking for a device that is small, easy to carry, performs as a cellphone 40% of the time and can be used to browse and read through my emails the remainder of the time and can sync with my hosted exchange service. (I seldom reply to emails on my mobile device anymore, which was the reason I got rid of the Star trek for the Mot Q to begin with (Keyboard).
Any advice is appreciate.
Hey; the diferences between Cingular vs imate is hardware no software...
Cingular has 128 Ram while Imate only half of it 64. So if you install the Cingular ROM will not make a big difference. If you want more space try with one Clean ROM. Erofish and Pampooh had made a great job with theirs ROM's for StrTrk.
Thanks, I've been checking out the different ROms and as I do all that I learned before has started to come back to me.... I just don't want to kill a phone in the process of updating it. Once I get the Imate in my hands I may start with the nasicis, radio updates, etc. Then try one of the clean installs, before moving on to WM6.1 version ROM's on the 3125. With two phones it isn't a big deal, but would like to use which ever is nicest (newer) as my carry phone.
