HELP - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

hello all i got my phone today.
How can i put my own ringtones on it.
I am not sure of the file types i need or anything. I dont even know where to go to select what tone i want. please help

if you want to use ringtones for specific contacts (e.g. a sound will play and when you hear it you'll know it's from your friend joe) then you'll need third party software such as ringtonex (mtux). ain't free though; i forgot how much i paid for it but i've been using the app back when i started with my xda1. still using it up to now. like the ringtone i use for my boss is the pacman sound when he dies...
for ringtone types; wav files are the ones you need...however you can also use midi and wma if i remember. if your unit is on activesync with your pc; simply copy and paste the wav file you want into the xda's windows folder. this will allow the ringtone to be used by other apps such as alarms or sms notification. or you can also paste it in the window's "rings" folder where the phone will automatically recognize the file as being a ring tone option. then just go to settings for the phone and click on that file you want to use.

hey its not finding wma files though

i read somewhere in the forum that you can use wma files as ringtones...just don't know how to do them and never really tried. not sure about this but most wma files i know are associated with mp3s as well. wma is a lower quality sound alternative to mp3s; i have wma files for songs and they range from 800-900kb as oposed to 3+ meg mp3 song files. so the way i see it (and i could be wrong about this) to use a wma file the xda would have to be able to get it from the memory or the storage card (?). but that would mean having a wma ring tone which is around 900kb in size...something that you don't really need coz eventually you will answer the phone after like 10 seconds. so no point in having the whole song as a ringtone really since you won't get to hear it to the end. that is if the other chaps in the forum are doing something different that is wayyyy easier than i really think it is
what i did was record bits of a song i have on storage; then use that as my ringtone. example; i have an mp3 of fernanda porto and i like the opening sequence. what i did was use my notes app; ran the song through media player and when the part i liked came i then recorded it. the file is in wav so it was easy to use it as a ringtone....

it need to be 2003 before it can use wma
they need to be put in windows\rings
you then add them with the program called add ringtones
in settings

ahh i dont have 2003, i was told 2003 is better not to have cause it messes up alot or something i dunno.

Mp3's as ring tones?

does anyone know how to use mp3 files as ring tones? is it possible?
you need to use Mp3 to wav converter and convert the mp3 to a wav file, then put the wav file under \Windows\Rings and it will work...but take note, its pretty big after conversion to wav
hence why i wanted to use mp3s as ringtones rather than wavs in the first place
Is there no way that you can trick the software into accepting the mp3 file as a wav?! Ive tried using a .wav extention, but that doenst seem to work either.

not possible at all...you must put the wav into Windows\Rings directory then go to select the ring tone as your default ringing tone..it should work just fine
Ofcourse it wouldn't be that hard for someone like the maker of PhonExt to create a program that wil let you run whatever you want when someone calls...
you can convert them to WMA which it makes the files smaller than MP3 and they sound just as good. that is of course if you have WM2003
You can use dbpowerAmp.com to convert the wav files into smaller bitrate, mono channels etc. This will make the file sizes much smaller... however, quality will start to suffer.

Yorch, what program do you use to convert the mp3 files to wma??
brilliant then! problem solved. i can just use WMA.
I convert mp3s to WMA via "Windows Movie Maker". Simply drag the mp3 onto the timeline, then save the "movie" as a WMA.
dbpowerAmp is an excellent solution (and FREE) and super easier to use. Now if you happen to have the XP Plus Media Edition, it comes with a little prog that lets you convert audio back and forth, very easy.
By the way anything that you convert to 64Kbps on a WMA will come with excellent quality as a ringtone.
You can also use the free Windows Media Encoder to convert Mp3 to wma.
With this great utility you can also directly convert all your movies ,divx etc to wmv pocket pc format!!!

There is not a piece of software for ppc2002 that does is job good.
Simply convert them to wav with this great tool

Now you can use your mp3 as ring tonr just install the cab file in your xda and from the explorer long press in the mp3 tone and choose it as ringtone i hope you like it.

No, it works only on Windows Media 10. If you Upgrade to 2.20 CHS Rom you'll have it!

nothing's supposed to be present in the programs folder. check out my post above....as i've said you only need to use file explorer to use the mp3 ringtone app...

Hi ther..i already test like hold 3second then set as ring tone n try to move the song to windows/rings but it cant set mp3 to ringtone..

I managed to install the cab and also choose an mp3 song as tone, in the context menu there is "set as ringtone", however, it didn't trigger the mp3 song that i picked, does this happen to you?

I realised it doesn't work !
coz i forgotten to remove the wave file... now i re-set the mp3 as ringtone upon holding the stylus for 2-3 seconds... i called my number.. it defaulted to bass(comes with set).Tried other mp3... still the same..

hmmmm, that's strange. maybe it depends on the rom versions? anyway; i'm sending you some screen shots just to show you how it goes. just follow screens1-5..as you can see the last option allows you to use the mp3 file as a ringtone...
Not working mate ... set as ring tone menu is available but don't change anything ... mp3 file is not being copied to windows/rings/ folder ... and not shown @ the ring tones set up ...

Ringtones

Help PLEASE, I don't think I'm stupid BUT ..................
Has anyone succeeded in putting their own ringtones onto the Lobster.
I've tried every format - including mid/midi, I've tried every folder - including Windows but they will not show up!
I note that the pre installed ringtone files are ticked as "in Rom" when I check with total commander but I am unable to give my new files the same attribute.
I have used prophet, S/E P900 etc etc and never had a problem.
Am I missing something obvious.

Put them in the /My Documents folder (on the phone)
Try putting them in the /My Documents folder directly on your phone (not the SD card).
I've got cut down (30 seconds worth) of WAV and MP3 music files as ringtones in this directory with no problems, as well as midi files.

Finally worked it out!
You need to put the file under Application Data under My Device, then the tunes will be listed when selecting Ring Tones. Not very obvious! Poor design by lobster
i know how to put mp3s as a ringtone
what you have to do is make sure they are in wma format, then put them in windows>rings. i did that with mine and it works. mp3s dont work, unfortunately. its pretty bad programming on microsofts account
you should move the files you want to use as ringtones in:
my device\application data\sounds\
it works like a charm every time, and it's cool to hear Pain - Shut Your Mouth.mp3 as the morning alarm
and it's good for ringing too, it sounds like an oldschool phone and when
you take out the beast (Lobster) people are like WTF, I like it
one messy thing is that windows media player doesn't find it when you try to open file through it, through explorer it opens, but who cares, TCPMP is a loooot better IMHO (if you don't watch wmv's of course , but only then )

Alarm - how to set mp3 for alarm

I tried everything i could think off but i coldnt set mp3 for alarm

i am using klaxon a wonderful program, you can browse to your fav music and add it to your list.
Also g alarm is a good program BUT i get an error on my htc hd 2. So sorry for that i can not explain further...

You don't need 3rd party software for this. The native alarm app will play your mp3 files.
There is a file-size restriction, but I don't know what it is. I remember getting a file of mine to below 3MB before it would list it. Try that.
They need to be in the windows folder on your phone. You do not have a windows folder on the storage card (you certainly shouldn't have, anyway!)

Must admit I'm interested in this too and have been working away for the past few days trying to find a solution.
So far all the files I have are converted to wma, have been reduced in size to match some of the other ringtone files in windows, have been named using the same naming convention as the windows mobile ringtones, have been checked to make sure that the properties of the files are identical, have been copied into the windows folder and /or the ringtones folder and.......
Still can't get this to work.
If anyone has been successful doing this please share your method exactly with us.

For alarms, it has to be a WAV file, in the Windows folder of device memory (not storage card).
Very detrimental to the memory space, I know....so I only have 1 custom alarm tone. Size wise I have a 3.5mb file, and it works fine. No need to care about naming conventions.
This is old...but still relevant. Iirc mp3 doesn't work as alarm file.
All you need to do is copy the mp3 file to your Windows folder and then set that as your reminder. Set your alarm sound as something short and the reminder will play as your alarm.
you need to convert ur mp3 to wav n place them in the /windows folder of ur phone memory....i didnt get any size of length specific issues, but hey i wasnt specifically looking for one.
I didn't need to convert it, I just copied the mp3 to the windows folder and it worked no problem.

Yes...this is a workaround, and saves putting a WAV file into Windows directory.
so far i tried:
1. putting mp3 in windows directory - didnt work
2. renaming mp3 to wav - didn't work
3. converting the mp3 from 192kbps to 128kbps - didn't work
4. converting mp3 to wav - works but file is huge
5. converting mp3 to wma - didn't work
6. renaming wma to wav - works like a charm
so conclusion - convert your mp3 to wma, rename to wav and put in windows directory.

i'm guessing there is a way to make mp3s work maybe a specific format bitrate etc. but since it's not determined yet mp3>>wma>>wav is as easier a solution as any
Converted mp3 to wma. File size 681KB. Renamed to wav and copied it into the Windows directory (not the "Rings" subfolder but the Windows root folder) and finally showed in the alarm sounds list but I'm unable to select it it choose "default" sound then. May be its too large.
I have no problems using any MP3/WMA ringtone by putting them in \My Documents\My Ringtones.
And if that matters, I always use mono instead of stereo (2 channels aren't exactly useful for one speaker).
EDIT: Just confirming WMA works in the My Ringtones folder here; wasn't sure about this. I use a 243 KB file of about 40 seconds (ring is 30 seconds anyway).
If you want to use a custom sound, i.e for SMS/Email received, connection established or any other notification, you'll need to make a WMA or WAV file and drop it in \Windows\.
EDIT2: ...and I'm using Dutty's rom (WM 6.5).
The HTC alarm aplication(cover up the ugly windows version thingy) doesnt allow you to select MP3s. not sure why.
Open the windows mobile alarm app and you can select mp3s if they are in your my documents folder . Might need WM 6.5.3 though.
Wierdly when you select it in the windows alarm app, it shows the file in the HTC app.
Again, all my custom sounds are in mp3 format dropped into \Windows\ and I have no problems applying them. I'm just using the standard ROM Version 1.43.206.4 (70315) WWE.

Because you're using the reminder workaround, not actually changing the alarm sound.....it's different from what the rest are trying to do.
I see what you're saying, but it's not just the alarm. All my sounds, ringtone/sms/email are all in mp3 format.
Finally after converting it to wav (not just renaming wma to wav) and placing it in windows folder it worked. Unfortunately the file is 2.8MB, no matter it's a mono

Music file associations

Can some one kindly explain tome how to get my music file
associations back to standard please.
After downloading Coreplayer I noticed all my music files
had converted to Coreplayer association with the corresponding
CP icons in my file explorer,I would like to change this back.

Open up core player, hit the menu or options button and you can get to tools then pages and you can find file associations just uncheck mp3, not the best description because i dont use it any more sorry, but its something like that

Cheers bud,I've done that,unchecked a few things and it seems the
WMA files I've got have reverted back OK to
Windows Media Player and have the right icon,but all my MP3's have the
Windows icon you usually get with programs and aren't selectable to play
from File explorer,if I select a track it just drops back to the home screen.
Music tracks are still selectable from HTC Player....
I'm at a brick wall at the moment,don't know what to try next ?
have you tried a soft reset?? and all so tried opening a track through windows media player that way it might pick them up
Yep tried that and updating my WM library,everything plays OK
but I still have this strange icon issue in File Explorer and
of course I can't select them to play from within there...
Seems like I will have to delete all the music and re-load them again,
all my ringtones and notification tones have stopped working.
Strange that they will all still play in hTC music player,but
are not selectable via File Explorer.
I would have liked a definitive answer to how to cure this,but

I ditched Coreplayer,not only did it cause this issue by associating all my
MP3's to itself,I found it quite irritating to use.
Well...deleted everything and uploaded all music files from my laptop again,

I can't get any of my music files to select as a ringtone,I missed several calls,texts and emails...
for the ringtone try dropping it into device-app data-sounds, i have no music on my phone, but i put ringtones there cause ms instructed me to do so, only problem is ringtone showed up in player and is ur music in ms format - wma i believe - i do not use i got 1.5 gb songs ipod format hope it helps

I have replied to your issue in another forum. Try using Resco File Explorer or Total Commander to set the file association back to wmplayer.exe.

but the issue isnt where the files are stored,they do already show up in my
selection of available ringtones and notification sounds (I had already been using them,so they are correctly placed in the phones folders.
The problem is if I click on one to hear it before deciding to select it for
shall we say my main ringtone nothing happens due to it
not having the correct file type....
I have selected 'Opens with' as WMP and they will open up from File Explorer
and play perfectly OK
and also in HTC player,but the file type is showing as 'unknown type'
instead of the generic HTC music icon it should have....

OK I tried your suggestion Web and ringtones work now... thank fook for that cheers...
although they appear as more than one copy of each in the
selection folder now,this isnt a problem as I know to select the top
version of each to my alotted ring tones and can just delete the
other copies from where I have them stored.
So everything plays as it should now,it's just the icons that
are wrong.
