I have been looking through the forum to determine the best combination of receiver + software as a gps solution. Is there a poll outlining the relative merits / demerits for the xda2s?
From reading threads, i feel alot of people use TT5 with a BT338 receiver. Would this be a reasonable solution?

I have BT-338. It work just fine with my tek 9090.
I use the BT-338 with CoPilot Live 5 and it works great on my SX66.
CoPilot Live 6 is too buggy, IMO.
I have not tried Tom Tom 5. But I could not install iGuidance 2.1.2 (I gave up after 3 attempts), TeleType World Navigator has huge breadth but not much depth in its features, and OnCourse Navigator 5 has user interface design problems, poor rerouting (it gets stuck on one path), and it requires manually starting the bluetooth connection each time.
Note: These recommendations might only apply in the USA.

Hi, my xda2s worked fine with TT5 and a BT77 bluetooth GPS, although the device configuration arrangement was a bit strange. However, that was on wm2003. I can't get any GSM functionality on wm2005 so can't comment on satnav and gps combinations with wm2005.
You will need to check with Tom Tom what support there is currently for Ireland. On the release of TTN5 there was limited support for the North & NO support for Eire. The latest downloadable maps suggest "major roads" of Eire are now supported but these maps are an additional purchase over & above TTN5.
I think i am the only BA user here with one, but i like my SD-501 (SDIO) GPS. its a great little unit, and gets great reception (not to mention better battery life compared to constant BT use!).
Still deciding on software though..

answers but only my opinion
1. useless if signal lost (search for my posts) in rom updated section.
2. can't answer this one as i use XP Sorry !
3. i have had 3 or 4 days between charges and if it keeps signal its ok.
depends on how much u use and talk though.
4. headphone quality is quite good for mp3 only problem is getting them to stay in your ears i have some foam boots off another set that help but they are still awkward.
5. you can set a limit on what u grab ie no file attach just headers etc so bandwidth u use will depend on ammount of emails and your settings.
6. who can tell what microsoft will do ? its future proof as long as they want it to be really.
7. infrared is kinda weak i found about 2 metres was my max with remote software.
8. maybe possible but the way it fits in i feel any mod would be ugly and easily damaged (liitle rubber door and a tiny microswitch that has to be operated would make this difficult (but who knows someone might do it) and you would also have to unlock it.
9. seems to work most ARM software unless there are harware rerlated issues to the ipaq like rotating screen or assigning buttons.
10. only you can answer that one for yourself do you feel its necessary at that cost and can u afford it ?? when unlocked i can see no reason at all why you could not use a differnet gprs provider as long as you had their sim in .
11. i have hooked it up to my gps reciever via serial cable with tom tom and it works but I dont now how noisy your car is :wink: its loud enough in my rover 400

Yes it does. 98/ME/NT/2000/XP and possibly also 95. And it's likely to also run on newer versions of Windows.
Further developments to my questions.
Today I went to the o2 Shop - to answer some of my q's
One thing that struck me was that when he went on the web - he still had to dial/connect - I thought they were online all the time?
My 2c:
1. It's not totally unusable, but if you need good coverage in weak signal areas, this device isn't for you.
2. Yep, you need a serial cable.
3. Can't answer as I use the PocketPC stuff much more than the phone stuff, but with moderate PPC playing, it lasts the weekend out no problem. As with all other phones, if you know you'll be out of coverage for a while, turn the phone off to save the batteries being drained by the 'anybody out there' signal when the phone trys to find a cell.
4. I quite like the headphones. The quality of the device's audio is very good. If you've got a pair of headphones you really like, you can get an adaptor pretty easily. A cheap 2.5->3.5mm phono adaptor is fine if you don't need to use the answer button.
5. There's not much hidden bandwidth, WYDIWYG (what you download is what you get). I think the polling for new emails mich be a bit inefficient: it seems to download all headers each time, but I've not investigated this.
6. This is one of the great things about the XDA, the OS is pretty much standard, and updatable (although O2 drag their heels on this one), so it's reasonably future-proof. There's too much of an existing PocketPC userbase for the platform to be abandoned.
7. As answered above. I think there's an adaptor for the IPAQ that uses the phono socket to drive a more powerful IR, but out of the box it's just to weak to work well.
9. Surprisingly, most IPAQ stuff works fine. The overclock utility even works (as usual be careful, it can cause a hard reset). HTC makes both devices after all. The main gotcha is there are less buttons on the XDA.
10. That's the deal I'm using. They're all pretty much the same. O2s coverage isn't as strong as Vodafone in some areas, but at least they offer some form of device support.
GRPS, while often advertised as an "always on" technology, does require you to dial up. The new rom alows you to set it so it doesn't disconnect on powersave/incoming phonecall. Of course if you loose your signal, it disconnects.

i do.. im using a BT-Q818.. its superb. does the job well plus its supposed to run 32 hours, and can pick up 32 satellite signals..
one good thing to think of before getting a gps receiver would be battery replacement possibilities..

Garmin GPS10 here. Fully waterproof, WAAS capable, magnetic attachment to car. Stores multiple parings. Runs around 12 hours on a charge. $80ish for OEM package (sensor only). This thing is awsome. I was getting differential fixes to within 1 meter while hiking up in N. MI last week. I was running also maptech's pocket navigator on my TyTN with the sensor duct-taped to my backpack. Laptop was in the truck with Terrain Navigator counterpart stored there. Both devices could share the sensor & also swap track data.
I'm using a GlobalSat BT-359 bluetooth gps receiver and iGuidance map software on my 8525. I've had no trouble with any of it. Got everything from Semsons Inc website as a bundle.

you dont have any troubles with your iG4? their's this stuttering issue that i have been experiencing.. what interests me is the ROM you are using.. i will prolly change to what you have as soon as i get too many porblems with the current one that i am using..
Bapski--- I'm still using iGuidance 3. My version 4 should be arriving soon. I'm anxious to see how it runs on VP3G's 3.0 ROM. Everything else I use runs very well on it. I'm still a noob at all this but if you have questions, I'll sure try to be of some help.

Go to Program File -> DopodScv, you can find the "GPSRecorder.exe" file
The program runs under Traditional Chinese character, you may try it out

GPS: Why do we need it IN the dual - I much prefer the battery life dividends that my Bluenext GPS receiver brings me. 25+ hrs (quoted) continuous... if it was in the Touch surely it'd be a real battery drain?
WiFi is different though. I respect it's also a battery drain, but I wouldn't have minded that for the occasional use. There's no bluetooth wifi adaptors out there?

Perfect, finally the MicroSD version. Problem is that there is no extra space left. I now use a 2Gb card for music and TomTom maps...

Hi there Guys i know you have all stressed that there is no antenna for the GPS in the touch dual but i would just like to bring to attention one note, in the uk T-mobile happen to offer the touch dual , with a preinstalled navigation software called Copilot live7 which usess the intetrnal GPS, i have also visited the copilot website and they have confirmed compatability with HTC touch dual. so so so anyone got anything to that?

I know very little of BlueTooth, so this may be a very silly question, but I was wondering. I have some problems with the A2DP connection, it skips and pauzes, a problem I didn't have with my Touch HD. So I was wondering:
Is it possible to cook a custom rom which uses the MS BT-stack rather thant he Widcomm one?
I would like to know this as well.
Been looking around @ the Touch Pro2 forums (that uses the widcomm / broadcom stack too) and I think the answer's no... it's well known that the widcomm stack is ****e and doesn't implement all the stuff that the MS one has, hence the BT probs ppl have.
Although this topic belings elsewhere I really hope driver updates help fix the horrible A2DP quality, not great in HD2 even tweaked out the max.

actually it's the other way round (although I'm not sure about the current version of widcomm in HD2), I've had windows mobile phones for the last 4-5 years, and MS BT stacks has always been inferior compared to Widcomm.

well, it's inferior for me because I can't use BlueInput with the widcomm stack
A quick search for the term "touch pro2 bluetooth stack" also brings up a bunch of links of people having issues with the widcomm stack (like this for example: http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=10696).
I'm sure they've probably improved the stack since then, but seeing as some people still have problems I'd rather have the standard MS stack where possible instead.
It should be possible on custom ROMs, but as far as I know it's not possible to change the stock BT stack on HTC official ROMs.
I also know bluetooth very little, what makes BT stack differently, hardware or software??
I remember back in 2004, we all were dying to replace the Microsoft BT stack with Widcomm one
Well to keep it simple, the bluetooth stack can be considered a mix between the drivers required for bluetooth to work and a series of apps/services which allow the device to use and work with different BT profiles (like device discovery, bluetooth serial port, A2DP, etc)...
Sounds like drivers to me. I know that on my PC, if I use a bluetooth device I can use the manufacturers drivers/tools or I can just use the default M$ ones. I wonder if it can happen then when custom roms become available?
Please please please put the MS stack back in chefs! The rubbish Widcomm one won't play nice with a lot of devices and apps (like MSVC)
HTC HD2 bluetooth stack & BMW ULF
There is a worldwide demand for the HD2 to work with the later ULF's for BMW built in car kits. If a ROM can be cooked to replace the Widcomm with the MS Stack I am sure there will be many downloads and donations from gratefull end users. Jetware would probably then work allowing tweaking between car and phone.
I've got an unused Lumia 650, and my plans were to use it as a navigator on my motorcycle. The display in the sunlight and the GPS are fantastic compared to my (old) Samsung devices.
BUT
the software compartment is very lacking. I've found no good navigator apps, right now the best solution is to use Waze by connecting the Lumia via wifi to my phone for the online data.
I was wondering if there's a way to do the "opposite": making the Lumia "sharing" the GPS via bluetooth (as if it is were an external GPS) to the Android phone.
It may be that i'm not able to search for it, or that there's nothing that makes it possible.
So here i am asking to the experts: is this a doable solution?
As a programmer myself, if there's not a ready app, what should i look to develop it? (provided that it is worthy)?
