Hi all,
I've not got my Hermes variant yet, but would like to ask if anyone plans on using this device in the car for example; with the need to charge AND have audio out going to the car speakers.
Since there is only one connector for both charging and audio, is there some sort of 'Y' cable that 'separates' the two connections?

They come in a variety of options, basically each is a Bluetooth car kit, that bonds with your device,transfers the contacts, mutes your cars radio, and pumps telephone calls through the car speakers also, it is in every way a fully working car kit for the Xda range.
I am biased as I retail and install them, but every customer i do installs for, they absoultey love them, as they also bond with upto 5 devices so other phones can be used as well, ie a works phone,

Would these parrot kits route the [musical] audio from my device to the car speakers then? I dont really need a BT carkit since I always have my personal BT handsfree on. My main requirements are those as listed in my original post.

No, it wont route music through your car, not that I have found yet,
You'd need it to support A2DP to play music too. As far as I know there's no headphone support only headset. At least it's only headset on mine.
The Parrot kits and the TyTn

Ah nice one, I knew this would be something people would want. But why HTC couldn't integrate this on the device in the first place still baffles me!
This is only my humble opinion.
When I first knew that the TyTn, followed by the next coming other HTC's PPCs (Trinity. Artemis), would not have the regular audio port anymore (Regardless the size, 2.5 mm or 3.5 mm), I was thinking they must be really stupid by taking that away. Since my first PPC, I have been always plug the audio/sound to my car stereo for MP3 and phone calls.
Then I tried to think about the logic, why would they take it away, they must have reasons, being such a high tech company. The most logical reason I can think of, they might want to design a good car kit /desktop cradle for it. Thus, by combining the audio port and the USB sync/charging port, they can create a cradle/car kit that would only have one connector to the PPC, instead of two connections/jacks: the USB and the audio pin. That might be a good idea, same idea like the earlier versions of the PPC, like Wallaby that had the serial connector that can be used for synching, charging, GPS, and audio input/output as well, all in the same connector.
But looking at the connector they made, the one posted above in the expansys, I'm kind of LOL really. 2 USB output, one for power, one for audio? Ha ha ha..
They /any third party, should have design a car cradle and a desktop cradle that not only have a regular USB for sync/power, but also just map out also the audio output to a regular 3.5 mm normal audio connection. And that cradle will be really useful and I would think many ppl will buy it. And for a plus side, just add a GPS module in the same car cradle unit, than its perfect solution.

Yes, I agree with the above post, what we now need is for someone to design both a desktop and car cradle, where it would have the 11pin, to which one would dock the device and the 5 & 6 pin on the underside.

When I got my Qtek 1010 (XDA), I couldn't get a fold-up keyboard fast enough. Unfortunately, the keyboard was more of a disappointment than anything else (some of the buttons, especially the space-bar, have to be pressed _just_ a little harder to be recognised).
Now, with my i-mate (XDA II), the only extras I have indugled in (although I still carry the keyboard with me) is a 512MB SD Card (which is also not so great, cause it's an AGFA, and it's SLOOOOOOW).
How about getting yourself a GPS kit?

Are you looking in my shopping basket? They were the ones I'd added before I asked... I was hoping for somebody with some experiences of the extending charge cable - it could have been a very useful device or uselessly overcomplicated and fragile.
As for that laser keyboard... :shock:
eXpansys rock.
They are so good at this kind of thing.
I recently bought a bluetooth headset from them which turned out not to be very robust. The ease with whcih I was able to send it back and get a full refund (including carriage costs) was excellent.
The most amazing thing about that laser keyboard is that it's £20 cheaper than the foldup one.
And don't forget Satellite Navigation. That is the 'Must Have'!
Install MS Voice Command software, pretty cool you can then control whole device by Voice without any training!
And a 2.5mm to 3.5mm Stereo adaptor from Expansys will let you plug in some "Proper" headphones (I use Sony MDR-EX71SL's) you've then got an IPOD butt kicking MP3/WMA player.

Umm, iPod butt-kicking? I've not found any 40Gb SD cards yet, and the battery life is mediocre enough without having it playing MP3s all day every day...
GPS - It's a thought. What's the good SatNav software to go for? TomTom still?

DAMMIT!!!!!! I thought of that 3 years ago!!!! They stole my idea!! Anyway, What about bluetooth mice or sdio camera. There's also external batteries that charge the pda, check out mobileplanet. Asus put out a wifi laptop hard drive enclosure, add a hard drive, and hook it up to the external battery, and you've got yourself up to 40 gigs of external storage. (I haven't checked to see if it'll work yet or not, but I don't see why not) And of course there's always gps.
And speaking of far fetched accessories, anyone wanna help me write a usb hub driver for the ppc so I can hook up my digital camera and nomad jukebox3, and use the jukebox 3 as storage for my digital pictures.
Once we get the hub working, there's no end to the usb accessories we can get.
BTW I also saw sdio video cards to do powerpoint presentations while on the road, and video capture cards.
Last but not least on my shopping list is the bluetooth cassette adapter. It's a cassette tape looking bluetooth hq audio adapter, for home or vehicle use.
I also remember something about an fm transmitter, I think it's an fm transmitter, so you can listen to your mp3 through your radio. There also has to be someone who makes a tv receiver, and a radio receiver for these things, there just has to be.

I want some proper headphones too, however if it means trying to swap them with the headset when a call comes in... no good. Any suggestions on a better headset/earphone combo?

yes, this is the UNIC option.. because:
a) HTC Proprietary connector: it's VERY DIFFICULT to find this type of mini-usb connector
b) Stereo headphones provided with hermes DOESN't have cables to charge the pda
Expensive option... get a bluetooth headset with 3.5mm input to connect to your FM transmitter ... and say bye bye to wired music.. almost..

I'm not sure this is possible. I imagine your average phone has a pin it sets closed or high or something. The hermes doesn't seem to..

It gives me one mini USB for charging, and a port exactly like that on the hermes for the audio/headset portion. I used a usb to 3.5mm adapter from mobileplanet.com to give me the 3.5mm audio out.

Yep, sorry, didn't see the extra adapter. That's a shame. It makes the very expensive first plug poor value for money.
If they come out with an adapter that turns it into mini USB and 3.5mm I'll go for it.. otherwise..
2 other q's:
1) With the first adapter, can you then use ANY usb car charger (ie does it bridge the NC pin to ground?) or do you then need your car charger to do that
2) What triggers 'headphone' detection? Is it the first adapter, the stereo adapter or is it actually plugging speakers into the stereo adapter?

I can use any car charger, but the other ones I have don't provide enough power to consistently cause the 8525 to recognize the charger (and thus they don't always charge).
I don't know the answer to your second question. I'd be happy to check it out for you tomorrow when it's light outside again

Cheers for that. By not consistently recognize you mean it detects it the first time you plug it in then not anymore? If so that sounds like what I've found too.. it's due to the 'spare' pin 4 (or 2 or B depending what diagram you're looking at) not being grounded. The fact it detects it once per reset seems to be a bug.

Correct. The car charger that came with my device holder works perfectly and consistently charges my phone every time I plug it in, so I've always use that one.

Sorry - yes. With just the audio adapter hooked up, the sound continues to come out of the rear speaker. When I plug in the headphones, the sound switches to the headphones. Hope that helps.

Yep thanks. From this I can work out from the pin outs that have been worked out that the tytn detects headphones (and thus shuts off the back speaker) by testing impedance/capacitance or something on the speaker out cables.
Since there are no official cradles for the tytn I'm looking at knocking up a solution like yours, charge in the car and gps nav through the stereo (was hoping for auto stereo mute on call but that's a pipe dream) and doing it without the 2 expensive adapters and car charger my jasjam didn't have.
I've gathered a bit of info about the usb connection from various sites and forum topics. Maybe I should create a/add to the hermes usb port page in the wiki, if anyone but me is interested..
I hope the tytn Y cable is NEEDED, because there isn't a male "minu usb" jack like the one on the hermes in commerce. Cutting original headphones has no results because you can't charge it.
I have thought to buy tytn y cable, open it, and if there is some space inside, to add a 2.5mm - 3.5mm (depends on the free space) jack
So the Y adapter has 3 outputs: to charge, headset & jack.
If no space is avaiable, i cut my headphones and plug it from y cable to my stereo (also with mic included).
Another thing, to detect ORIGINAL CHARGER must be connected B & A pins, as described in THIS url comments

Parrot makes a BT car kit that connects into all factory stereos to use the speakers to play the phone or mp3 through the car stereo speakers. Obviously the mic is a separate item, but incoming calls (or listing to mp3s from your BT phone) do mute the car stereo during the call.
several kits work, but I have Parrot CK3000 Evolution Bluetooth, Hands-Free Car Kit which came with specific harnesses for my car make and model. The other one is a bit flashier here:

Auto stereo mute works fine if you use WMP or even with TCPMP if you uncheck the "play music in background" option
Has any crufted an adapter that allows the use of normal 2.5mm cell-phone headsets to work with a TyTN. I like the fidelity of my awesome Plantronics headset, and I want to get it to work with the TyTN. Any luck?

No... I've been searching high and low. I've got a pair of Shure headphones that are amazing and have the 2.5mm 3-pole connector that works perfectly with my HTC Magician... I'd love an adaptor to just run them with my Tytn, but so far no luck.
Currently, I'm using a 3.5 adaptor and then another adaptor to the ExtUSB connector, so I've got no mic capability and two dodgy connectors between my 100 GBP headphones and my phone!!!
I'm going to take my Shures to an electronics guy and have him swap the connector eventually.

With the risk of a "me too" post, a 2.5mm converter would be worth money to me. I have yet to find one anywhere and am about to buy an extra headset and start "experimenting" and who know where that will lead. Probably to a new phone.

I just finished my request to HTC support. These devices do NOT work. No audio what so ever. I tried regular audio as well as the audio of a call. Nothing-nada. The adapter is stamped as "Motorola" on the back. Apparently the HTC version of the USB plug is not the standard "EMU" version that everyone else is using.

I just bought the Motorola adapter, ended up wasting $5 (not a lot, I know, but hey, it's money).

My motorcycle has a 2.5mm plug for hooking a cell phone into the intercom system (it's a gold wing) It also has a 3.5mm plug for an aux device to the stereo. I got the moto hf820 from amazon for around $45. It is a bluetooth hands free device, but it also has a 2.5mm plug on it. So, the phone section of my 8525 now connects to the bluetooth 820 into the intercom through it's 2.5mm plug. For the rest of the audio, I am using one of the extusb to 3.5mm adapters. That way I'll be able to get my gps directions over the stereo. That is a long way around to do it, but the 820 seems to work out pretty well as a 2.5mm adapter.

However, most people want the wired headset so that they don't have to rely upon bluetooth. I want a fall-back headset.
To be honest, I found the perfect BT headset, and so I'm not sure if I need a wired connection anymore. I bought a jawbone and have been using it for 2 months. I like it so much, I bought a *second* one for when I run down the batteries on the first one, I can just use that one. Sure, it costs me $120 a pop, but after using 6 different bluetooth headsets over the last few years, this is the first one where people can't tell that I'm on a headset. Yes, it's that good.

That it is! I have the Kennedy CellSet (www.cellset.com) on my goldwing that integrates the cell phone as if it is a 3rd party on the intercom. Makes it kind of nice because either me or my wife can take a call while we are riding if needed. Anyway, I had the adapter for a 2.5mm plug and they don't make an adapter for the extusb of the HTC so hey, this works. Not only that, the GPS audio and the phone audio are on two different channels on the bike now. Worked out pretty good.

If not, maybe we should try to cut down one ExtUSB to 3,5mm adapter and cut down the 2,5 mm side of the headset, and then maybe it can be built together, and we have a headset, with ExtUSB port.
Is it a possible way? Maybe any alternatives? God I'll be really happy if we can do something to do with this

2.5 and 3.5 fix for USB
I too have an expensive Shure headset with a 2.5 connector that I used on my Cingular 8125. I just moved to a Cingular 8525 e/w the ExtUSB connector.
I have been working with the tech support guys at Shure and we have sort of a fix. My Shure headset has a Mic so it needs a 4 conductor cable and the corresponding 4 wire jacks to carry voice to the handset. BIG issue. None of the current connectors (Ext USB to 2.5 or 3.5) carry the 4th wire! They will carry audio out over the 3 wires. . . stupid I guess.
So Mobile Planet and others now have a TyTN (Titan) Cingular 8525 cable adapter that is made by ORA and has its own mic, and answer/hangup control and ends in a 3.5 jack for a headset (3 wire). This means that if you have a 2.5 jack on your headset you need another adapter to reduce the 3.5 to a 2.5 (+/- $10.00 US).
Then you use the mic in the adapter. This is a real mickey mouse rig but it works and you do not have to buy another very expensive headset. You just cannot use the mic in your expensive headset! The cable is also a little long since the adapter's cable is about 20".
If you are thinking of buying a good wired headset then use the ORA adapter (Shure is about to come out with one also) and a standard Shure 3.5 headset like the SE series ($150+) which has a shorter cable. The two work nicely together. It is what I am using now. see link below:

I bought a cradle from ebay (leeonline) because I cannot get a 4 in 1 adaptor from HTC. I tried using the vga-out (17 inch CRT Monitor), rca video out (our Television Set), Brandless USB hub, Generic/standard USB Keyboard and Generic/standard USB Mouse on it all at the same time. Everything works.
Now, I really no longer bring my laptop to work. My athena is all I need for Word Processing, Spreadsheets etc. There are quirks though. Sometimes, the mouse stops working or the athena hangs. (It may be the amount of programs installed.) Then again, It is still faster to boot than my laptop. The other downside is that even with the cradle plugged to the adaptor, It will still consume energy from the battery of the unit.
What I have done to my athena may not be new to most people but I would like to hear from other people what attachments or modifications they have done to make their athena more useful and powerful. In this way, we can all benefit from these ideas. Thanks!

I used to do that, but the novelty wore off eventually. Now i just bring in a mini notebook. It's easier than carrying loads of bits about and connecting things to monitors (though that option is still there if necessary).
Pretty cool though if you like your gadgets.
Leoni is correct, however he can always leave the other stuff connected to the cradle and use it sorta like a docking station, but you would need a second cradle for the home TV. I'm glad this thread started because I myself was considering getting one for my TV. However, what should I do about the audio coming from my device (will I still be able to connect audio to my AV receiver)? As far as the 4 in 1 cable I would be able to get to the audio jack on the Athena however the down side is that not all USB flash drives would be supported with the 4 in 1 cable. Yetdy can you tell me how you work around getting audio streamed?
I think there are a few ways to stream audio.
#1 S-Video if I'm not mistaken is supposed to stream audio to your TV.
#2 Audio Jack to RCA Audio converters connected directly to the TV or amplifier would also help assumming you are using the 4-in 1 adaptor. Cradle cannot help you out with this option.
#3 Of course there is bluetooth connection which is what I am going to use. Got a bluetooth transmitter and receiver from ebay but is currently busted (bad seller). Another is to get a BT that has a changeable earphone/buds. Change the earphone to an audio jack to RCA Audio jack and follow #2.

****if it is anything like the one I got from ebay then no, as it covers up the headphones out port from the athena but does not replicate it on the back ! the athena also carries audio out from the same USB connector that you charge it from (this is why the socket on the athena is an unusual/different shape compared to your plug on USB charger) if they had replicated this port propely on the dock then you could have got audio out that way, but the dock connector for that is also wrong (standard USB shaped socket, not the odd one from the athena) ****

If you want to play audio on your home theatre speaker, you could also consider the option of plugging an FM transmitterinto the headphone jack, then use your FM receiver to play through your theatre speaker.
That was how I used to play my music in the car, through the car's srereo speakers.

wont work if the Athena is in the ebay dock/cradle, as it covers up the audio out port, but does not replicate it.

Maybe you can share some other options here. You may have other ideas that may be useful to us. I just got my athena last month and cradle last week so I cannot really say with authority what it can and what it cannot do. If you can help us out in maximizing the athena with its cradle, many will appreciate it.
None of the video outputs from the 4-in-1 carry audio, the only options are BT a2dp or the headphones jack. Seems a bit long-winded to me though - I'm sure there are less fiddly mods out there. I just used to use the magnetic keyboard as a stand, slipped a BT keyboard over the top of it and the 4-in-1 for usb hub etc. This left a free audio jack to use as I wished. Seems like the docking station is more of a hindrance than a help.

I think my EEE pc is a more convenient device on the whole than the above setup would've been if i'd carried all that with me I wouldn't have had any space to fit my work stuff!
I came accross another docking station for $119.00 USD that has the audio option on the side along with 2 standard USB ports instead of 1. I think it's a bit too pricey, due to the fact that on flebay they do have a2dp stereo bluetooth adapters for like $50 USD. Besides with that and your bluetooth headsets it might still be possible to answer a incoming phone call on your bt headset without having to hear the audio coming from your A/V receiver (considering you left the phone on). Leoni, both options have their own drawback (no powering source with the 4 in 1 cable for all USB storage devices and the inaccessable headphone jack when using the docking station). But anyway I'm going to order the 4 in 1 cable too and see which one works best for me on a day to day use.
as I said the only simple option is to use bluetooth and as tootalk2000 pointed out you can get adaptors on ebay for £25 ish, I suppose the other more complicated option would be to, take your cradle apart and replace the USB connector into the phone with this,

Awwwww shux, someone just gave me some experimenting to go do. I'm ordering one of those jacks today, and hopefully it will come around the same time as cradle. I'll just super glue it to the back portion of the cradle and plug it in externally. Due to the fact that the USB port is still on there you would still be able to sync even when the ear phone jack is still in use.

I have some Airdrives earphones that I use with my iPhone but for some reason when I plug in a usb to 3.5 adapter into G1 I can hear fine but the mic on the headset doesnt work (person on other line cant hear me). The earphones that came with G1 wont stay in my ears. Have you ever seen a HTC compatible USB connector type stereo headphones that have some type of a over the ear holder and a mic for phone calls?
I use the HTC wired remote control and a set of Bang & Olufsen headphones. This arrangment works very well...

hi because the batt so bad on these phones i was thinking of adding a plug or jack to charge and use the headphones at the same time. i am looking at fitting 2 plugs where the usb slot is. but that would mean changing the plug on the charger. or fitting an extra plug some where in the phone for the headphones. anyone got any ideas before i start hacking the thing to bits

My wing came with a usb splitter just for that reason you might find one on ebay.

My WING came with one, my G1 did not, are you sure yours had a CHARGER adaptor?? This looks good and sells on eBay for $5.50 total. Search for : HTC Touch Pro Diamond mini USB, 3.5mm Audio Adapter

Hihi, I recently bought the HTC RC E100 (http://www.blueunplugged.com/p.aspx?p=137320). On that site it says that G1 works with it. But it doesn't? I tried it, and sound still comes out of the speakers.
Now it said that I need a driver from the disc or from the HTC site. I tried to install that, but it says that the phone is already updated and needn't update anymore.
Does anyone else have this headset, and have it working on their G1's? Thanks!
edit: Well upon researching, apparently it doesn't work. Stupid misleading site is misleading.
There was a set of headphones that came with the G1, you should see if you can get those or see if tmobile will give you some for free if they didnt come with yours.
I was almost tempted to purchase these or get the doopad ones(rc-w100) off amazon for a little cheaper. I was wondering if the g1 will even be able to have this function through the ext.usb? I know the drivers for winmo phones won't work but is there even the slightest bit of possibilities?
I know A2DP is comming for bluetooth but is there going to be an AVRCP profile also?

I can't seem to find a single post anywhere talking about what the music quality is like or whether any advanced features like volume control work or whether calls work using the microphone.
Side story: I went into the Apple store to try it out and the store nazi said I could not try them on due to hygiene reasons. Fair enough, but he then even declined taking them out of the packaging so that I could just handle them and talk into it on a call to see if it worked. So instead I handled the box instead, ShopSavvy scanned it and then accidentally dropped it onto the somewhat dirty floor. Oops.
