REVIEW: IDS TyTn Leather ‘Book Style’ Case - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Accessories

I mentioned this product in another thread but now having received the case and used it for a day or two I feel that a more in depth review would be suitable as a seperate post.
I found the IDS / Digital Express, TyTn Leather ‘Book Style’ Case almost by chance while searching for a case for my Orange SPV M3100. In fact doing a Google search for a TyTn case didn’t show up any products that I liked and it was only when I tried searching for a ‘M3100 case’ did Google throw up a link to the IDS website as a sponsored link. I’m glad it did as while the case isn’t perfect it’s much better than the case supplied with the phone and the old Krusell P900 case that I was using.
Costing $25.00 USD (about £13.50) the IDS ‘Book Type’ Leather Case fits the TyTn phone perfectly offering a good level of protection while still allowing access to all the features and controls of the phone.

Fully closed the case adds about 5mm to the overall dimensions of the phone with a little more bulk being added to front of the phone by the screen flap. I appreciate that some people might not like this and consider a bit too much bulk is being added to the phone (especially as the phone isn’t the slimmest device to start with) but in practice the additional bulk doesn’t become too intrusive.
The case itself has a flap that covers and protects the touch screen and also provides a small internal pocket for a Transfalsh Adaptor. The flap is held closed by a small magnet and is easily flipped open to gain access to the screen. Personally I would have preferred a Velcro strip to keep this flap closed but the magnet does a good enough job and isn’t so weak that the flap comes undone of its own accord, even if it did open the phone is still protected by the main case which is kept closed using a more secure press-stud arrangement.
This flap coupled with a screen protector should satisfy most users and keep the device protected from day to day wear and tear.
The front of the case as mentioned is held closed by a press-stud. Opening the front of the case allows full access to the internal keyboard by sliding the screen to the right. While the case is quite a tight fit and so holding the keyboard inside the case, it isn’t such a tight fit that you wouldn’t want to keep a secure hold of the phone in this position, that said as most people would use both hands to hold the phone and type so I can’t really see this being an issue either.
Cutaway areas in the case allow access to all the phones buttons/controls as well as both the front and rear cameras and stylus.
The above image shows the one area of concern that I really have with the case, namely that the top right hand corner of the phone (above the power button) and to a lesser extent the bottom right hand corner (by the stylus) are a little exposed and could sustain scratches or more severe damage in these areas if dropped (this happened to an old P900 of mine once with a Bodyglove case using a similar case design so perhaps I’m just being a bit too cautious about this – maybe not :? ).
I can understand why this approach has been taken as the gap is needed to accommodate the sliding screen and keyboard access but I feel that IDS could have put a edge or seam on the front panel of the case that protects these areas of the phone when the case is fully closed (after all the front of the case has to be folded away from the screen to slide the screen open).
Maybe this omission was a factored down to cost but personally I’d sooner pay a bit more for a device that fully protects my phone.
The belt clip slides over and securely fastens to a screw that fits into the back of the phone case. The clip is easily removed from the case by pressing a spring loaded button at the top of the clip, allowing the case/screw to be slid up out of a central recessed slot that holds the case and clip in place. While some might not like this arrangement, it does mean that the clip can stay on your belt if preferred.
The clip feels strong enough although with any plastic item you can’t be sure just how robust it is until it’s had a few months use which sometimes exposes weaknesses in its design or manufacture.
My preference would have been to have something similar to the Krusell Mini Belt Clip which provides a little less bulk but I guess again this is a matter of preference.
Conclusion
Overall the IDS the IDS / Digital Express, TyTn Leather ‘Book Style’ Case is a really nice product and as mentioned previously, in my opinion offers a significant improvement over the case supplied by HTC in the box. It seems to be well made, allows full access to all of the phones features and most importantly appears to offer a good degree of protection.
The case considering its features and apparent build quality is quite inexpensive. Delivery postage was free and it took about 5 days to arrive here in the UK from Hong Kong so I can’t complain about the service either.
Because of the short amount of time that the TyTn has been available there are relatively few cases out there at the moment and of those that are available most of them are very similar in terms of design and features. The IDS Leather ‘Book Style’ Case whilst not being perfect (and make no mistake its good points far outweigh the bad) is certainly good enough to help protect your investment from the day-to-day hazards of use while providing full access to all of the phones many controls and functions, above all it looks good too! 8)
I’m sure that in time, similar and possibly better cases from other manufacturers will appear but until then you could do a lot worse than to get one of these as it does seem to offer a fairly unique design with a lot of features that I haven’t seen anywhere else.
Pros:
Leather Construction
Flexible / Well Thought Out Design
Offers a good degree of protection
Full access to all phone controls and features
Secure Belt Clip
Free Delivery and Fast Service
Cons:
Magnet holding front flap may not be to everyone’s liking
Corners on right of phone not fully protected by case
Belt Clip may be a bit bulky for some people

Oh and just in case you're wondering... no I don't work for IDS or have any comission arrangement with them, I just thought I'd share my experiences on this product with other forum members given that there are so few cases out there at the moment

Thanks for the review

I don't have a TyTn (not fond of the headphone connector or microSD) but I just ordered a case for my device, based on your review!

do you know if you can get a windscren suction mount that will conect to the belt clip screw on the back of the case?

Hi
Piel Frama have a windscreen suction mount that attaches itself to the belt clip screw. Its great as you do not have to remove the TyTn from the case.

I've alse bought this case two month ago. I think it's the best case available!

I also ordered this case based on the great review, but was dissapointed when it arrived.
1. The fold over flap is very loose due to the press stud being incorrectly positioned.
2. The phone casing has no protection from the press stud base. this could cause danage with time due to the movement between the case and the phone casing
3. Velcro would have been the answer in place of the press stud and magnet.
But hey, maybe I got a Monday case!
I have gone back to my OEM case.

How is the phone held in the case? Is there a plastic band of some sort as there is in most of the other cases?

Krusell - no so fast and direct access to screen like here
Ok Im going to shopping...

XDA Orbit PDA case
does anyone know of a leather case to fit an o2 XDA "ORBIT" PDA (in UK) I want one that sits "portrait" style on the belt, more like the Motorola V3i flip - I have found nothing worth having yet, even the KRUSEL case which is the closest design has a plastic belt clip that adds far too much thickness to the phone and is also breakable, not like the spring steel type as per Motorola !
Please help as this is stopping me from using my ORBIT PDA as the Motorola is far easier to use - you can take it off your belt, open it and use it ONE HANDED its so easy. wHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN MADE YET ??

Rhodium Holster Suggestions

I currently have a Telus Touch Pro 2, and I'm using the Telus holster for it.
It's the only holster they offer.
It is terrible. I've had the phone since August and I'm on my third holster...they just fall apart.
I have BlackBerry holster envy. I love the look, I love the feel, but the Touch Pro 2 just doesn't fit in BB holsters.
I want something similar for my TP2.
Any suggestions?
I made a thread like this before, and a lot of people suggested cases, or things that just plain weren't holsters!
I want something that is:
A. A holster! The device must slide in and out of this holster, and the holster must remain attached to my belt.
B. Leather.
C. Covers the device. I've seen iPhone holsters where the iPhone just snaps in, and isn't covered at all...that's not what I'm looking for...
D. Magnetically-clasped. Friction fit...anything but magnetic clasp...just won't do.
E. Device must enter and exit vertically. I've seen iPhone holsters where the iPhone is inserted horizontally (side first). Unacceptable. The phone must be inserted bottom first.
F. High quality! Price is not an object, but I wear this sucker every waking hour, so it's got to stand up to punishment! Price is not really an object.
G. Rotating. The clip that attaches to the belt must be able to rotate.
To clarify: I'm not looking for a case! I want a holster. Just look at any BlackBerry holster, that's what I want, except for the TP2!
Like this!
Thanks in advance!

I bought it and I have used it for almost a week now. This case might work better for you then me.
I wear shorts alot and have the holster clipped to the inside of my pocket. I don't like wearing belts/pants.
It makes a big dent in your pocket and feels uncomfortable when walking around.
I plan to just buy a regular silicone case that has grip.
I keep having to readjust the holster and it's just not working to my liking at this point.
Plus I actually have to use 2 hands to pull the phone out the case which gets very annoying for me.

How solid is the attachment between the clip and the holster?
That's where the telus holsters fall apart for me...
How tightly does the phone sit in the holster?
Are you able to post a detailed picture of the belt clip?
I may just buy it because it's only $10...
Put it this way if the clip swivels left a certain amount of spins will unlock the removable swivel clip.
I feel uncompfortable when using this holster, plus it grips on tight to my touch pro 2 to the point where I have to use 2 hands to get it. It's not easily accessible.
I am starting to think if I should just take my chances with the open face holster.
Anyways here are some live pictures of the case I am using taking with the camera on my tmobile touch pro 2. Enjoy

Ah, there we go.
Thanks.
I was just getting those infamous "X"s...
I bought 5 of these http://www.cellphoneshop.net/pro2holster.html
They are durable, hold the phone very well, and at that price, i just keep a few in my bag and car just in case i break one, i can replace it instantly
Go Piel Frama, hand made leather, very very high quality. They have the magnum and the classic version. Magnum is slightly more robus for € 10 more, but worth it imo. Also the best belt clip in the business.

ive got the ATT version of the TP2 (HTC Tilt 2) and an HTC belt case (p/n: 70H00191-01M) that i got from Best Buy for $32

I also bought this case and have been using it for three weeks. It is acceptable and seems to be well-made, but has a few drawbacks. The phone fits tight and my case needed to be stretched for the TP2 to be inserted comfortably and without constantly pressing buttons or making screen-touch noises. I used the original styrofoam insert plus some cardboard for this purpose but still must lock the screen when using this case. I did this while carrying it in my pocket anyway.
The magnet is large enough to interfere with the keyboard slide-out feature and will turn the phone on and rotate to landscape mode when in the case. This will cause the battery to drain unless you turn off the feature of turning the phone on from standby when the keyboard slides out. You can do this with a registry hack:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\KEYBD]
"SlideWakeup"=dword:00000000
This key wasn't present on my phone so I had to add it.
FWIW, the belt-clip resembles those from the Krussel Multiadapt system and looks strudy enough, but I've found the knob to be compatible with only some Krussel clips. Also, the knob wasn't screwed on very tight when received, but don't use Locktite threadlocker on these plastic parts, as it will make them brittle and in time they will break.
I would like to use a Krussel case, which is what I used on my last phone (HTC Wizard), but they don't have one with the proper cutouts for the Verizon/Sprint variant with both USB and 3.5mm connectors on the bottom. Piel Frama makes a fine case, but I can't find one at a reasonable price and won't pay $100 for a phone case. My limit is $50, but it'd better be damn good with no quirks or inconveniences at even that price. I assume the TP2 will not fall out of the Piel Frama case when the flap is opened, but it's hard to tell from the photos since I can't tell what holds the device in. At that price I would want to be able to slide out the keyboard while in the case, too. Does anyone have any input on this?
I might like to try the plastic clip-holster from Cellphoneshop.com, previously linked, but I would worry about accidentally hitting the clip and causing the phone to fall out at an inopportune time like while riding my motorcycle.
I don't even use that holster/case anymore.
After a couple of days of using it, it is just too uncomfortable for me to use. Right now I am using the stock case that came with the phone. In a couple of weeks I am going to buy a silicone case and see how that works out.
I just need something thats not going to drop my phone out my pocket when I am wearing shorts and driving or riding a bike.
I didn't know it would be so much trouble finding a solution for a phone that has a slide put keyboard ;(
I have an update on the Ebay case I reported on earlier. Yesterday the case fell to the ground in my garage (no damage) and I found the knob on the case had unscrewed itself. This is not a good thing and if I want to continue using this case I will need to apply glue the knob so it won't come off again. I would advise anyone using this case to do the same.

You can slide the keyboard out in the iMagnum case, and according to a friend of mine the TP2 is fastened to the case itself. On the Classic case, however, you can't slide the keyboard out. You have to pull the holster off for you to do that unfortunately. Not a big deal if you, like me, don't use the keyboard THAT much. I do consider upgrading to the iMagnum though. It may not look awesometastic and it is pricey, but it does its job better than any other holster/case. IMO.
When I got my Treopro I bough from BestBuy the Samsung Instinct side holster
The thing works AWESOME for my Touch pro 2 ... it's just tight enough that it holds it, and just loose enough to allow fast access ... and for $12.95 it's a freakin' steal!
Edit/PS ... it also has a little slot where you can slide the spare stylus for when you loose the main one

I wouldn't use this pouch if you plan on attaching it to your belt, the clip is just too thick (due to the rotation mechanism) so the phone would be too separated from your body. The clip is solidly attached to the rotation mechanism, but the mechanism is just screwed to the pouch, so you have to be careful in which direction you rotate the pouch, otherwise you'd also be unscrewing it.
The pouch itself looks very durable, and the phone fits perfectly in it (I have ATT tilt 2). It's also thin enough to put the whole thing in my pocket, which is how I use it. I also has an opening for charging or headphones, which not all pouches have.

REVIEW: Seidio Active Case & Holster

Almost a week ago, UPS showed up with a gift from Seidio - an ACTIVE case & spring holster combo for the Motorola Photon 4G. After spending a week using the case, here is my detailed review.

I've been using Seidio products since the Palm Pre was released and have always appreciated their quality and sturdy products. So my expectations for their Photon 4G ACTIVE case offering were quite high. Unboxing and initially looking everything over, I was pleased to see that their signature build quality remained.
Installing the case onto the phone is super easy. My initial impressions were that it fit the phone very snugly and securely. As with any case, the more secure you want your phone, the more you must sacrifice in size. This case is no exception. Subjectively, it does not really make the phone feel much wider, but I definitely notice the increase in thickness. I don't have a caliper to measure, but it is thick enough where it almost dissuades me from carrying the phone in the front pocket of my jeans. I really like that the rubber material offers just the right amount of grip for my preferences. The plastic half of the case is not slick either, giving me great confidence when holding the phone that it won't slip out of my butterfingers.
One thing I immediately noticed were the raised buttons. The buttons are sturdy enough that pressing them gives very positive feedback and does not feel mushy at all. I really like how the power button feels even more than without the case, as I felt the power button was always kind of a pain to get to since it was recessed. The volume and camera buttons also benefit. And the buttons are not raised "too far" such that I would hit them accidentally either. It's just right.
The cut-outs in the case for the USB & HDMI ports, headphone jack, camera, and kickstand are precise and accurate. Because the Photon's HDMI & USB ports are so close to one another, I see why Seidio was forced to just have one large cut-out for the two ports. This is really the only "weak point" in the whole case, but I cannot fault Seidio for Motorola's design choices.
While not surprising, it is unfortunate that getting the kickstand out is a real pain. I'd call it next to impossible if you don't have any nails. But that tradeoff is to be expected with thicker, sturdier cases. But if you can get it out, then the phone looks good.
Moving onto the spring holster, it too feels sturdy and well built. The springs on both the phone latch and belt clip are strong and secure. The phone locks in positively and is not loose at all. The belt clip rotates into 7 different positions, depending on your personal preference. I prefer to keep mine rotated fully clockwise for right-handed horizontal carry.
Unfortunately, I did find one negative here. Unless the belt clip was rotated fully to the right or left (for horizontal carry), the belt clip was loose and had about 10 degrees of play in each other position. I informed Seidio of this, who told me that this was unique to my sample belt holster. They offerred to replace it for free, but I declined since it doesn't affect me. I view this only as a minor nuisance that only affects those who prefer vertical or angled carry.
After using the ACTIVE case & holster for the past week, I can say that the ACTIVE case does what it's supposed to - protect my phone. It's sturdy and solid. The rubber does attract lint and dust, but that's yet another tradeoff of this particular material. When holstered, I had no issues feeling the phone vibrate, which has been an issue with looser, poorly-built holsters.
However, I do have one significant usability issue with the belt holster. With each and every prior belt holster, I was always able to reholster my phone with one hand, simply by inserting the lower half of the phone, then pushing inward. The belt clip latch would simply be pushed out of the way and snap back in place. But due to two subtle differences in the latch, the tip of the latch frequently catches the lip of the ACTIVE case. It got caught more than half the times I reholstered the phone - far too frequently which makes this a significant issue in my book.
I analyzed the latch on this case vs the Seidio case for the Epic and noticed two subtle yet significant design differences.
Photon (left) & Epic (right)
If you look closely, the tip of the latch on the Photon is longer. The angle of the "face" of the latch is also sharper and more acute. Those two design differences means that the bottom of the phone must be FULLY seated, before pushing inward, else the latch will catch the case. I reported this back to Seidio, who informed me that their ACTIVE cases and holsters were meant to be reholstered by manually lifting the latch. I think this is utterly preposterous but they stuck to their guns. So I've taken matters into my own hands, used a Dremel tool, and both shortened the length of the latch and changed the angel of the latch face. That has thankfully solved my reholstering issues.
In summary, I am happy with the ACTIVE case. It's sturdy, solid, and protects my phone. However, I'm not as happy with the holster, due to the reholstering issue outlined above. After reading Seidio's response, I took a quick informal poll amongst my friends and coworkers. Of the 8 that responded to me, NO ONE reholsters their phone with two hands - everyone does it the same way I do. Thankfully my Dremel modification resolved the issue for me. I can only hope that Seidio takes my feedback into account and revises their holster design.
Case: 9/10
Holster: 4/10 (8/10 after I corrected the reholstering issue)

Well the UPS guy left me a nice gift last night... a brand new Seidio Active Case & Holster combo!
So far so good. The phone fits snugly, everything fits into the holster securely, and it seems to offer the level of protection that I'm hoping for.
I'll be adding to this thread with a more detailed write-up after using the holster & case for a few days. I'll gladly field any questions folks have as well.
Disclosure: I want to fully disclose that I got this free from Seidio, in exchange for doing a detailed review write-up. But I only agreed to do so as long as I retained the freedom to speak freely, honestly, and unbiased. I will say though, that I've been using Seidio products for a long time and am a fan of their products, so take it for what you will.

How's the button action with the Active? I loved how the ActiveX felt with my Epic, but it had frustratingly-mushy "button feel" through the case. The power button wasn't *too* bad, but it was impossible to take a picture using the camera button with the case on (it required too much pressure to activate the button through the rubber nub, and the camera would shake).

To answer your question, I really like it. For me, I felt that the Photon's power button was a little difficult to easily push, as it was almost too flush. With the Active case, the power button is very responsive and requires less pressure to trigger. The buttons over the volume rocker and camera button, also have a similar solid push/pressure feel and I still feel the click-feedback very well.

I can't tell from the pics but are the sides of the case open? Are there any spots where the phone is not protected by the case?
I'm looking into either getting the Active case or the Convert when it comes out. Not sure which one yet.
**EDIT....Ok. I see it better now with the newer pics you added.**
That looks really thick, how easy is it to get the kickstand out with that? Do you have the car dock? If so does the case hinder pairing?

I do not have the car dock, but I'm certain that the case is too think to fit into the car dock. Again, it's a trade off... thicker more protective case = less compatibility with existing docks.

Elago Leather Case

Have any of you ordered this for your note? They make this one and the one without the flip cover. As of now, I am using the official flip cover and it is already starting to fall apart. I really like the look of this. If no one has ordered this, has anyone else tried any of their other products? Just curious about quality.

Also, I want to order this screen protector. There is a post here in the forums about it, but am also curious if the above case will fit with this .4mm thick tempered glass.
http://www.amazon.com/SPIGEN-SGP-Pr...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1331226637&sr=1-1
If it doesn't fit, this might be a good option to go with the screen protector...

Any comments would be welcome
Very nice case. Love the slim design. Will look into it.
Ended up ordering the case without the flip front and a Steinhill Ultra Crystal screen protector.
When it comes it, I will post some pictures on the consolidated white note thread.
Just ordered....
I just ordered the flip cover version - should be here by the end of the week. Will post review and pics when it arrives.
Please come back and give us some reviews of this case. I really like the look of it. However, I wonder why there's no cutouts for the power or volume buttons. I also wish they had done a little more to cover the corners.

Yeah, I read that, too. I can see where the cutouts are for the camera, flash, usb, and mic. I just assumed that's what they were talking about. I guess it's possible that it's just a mockup, or you just have to push the buttons through the leather.
Does anyone know if this case is available in black?
Also, SPG makes a Stehen case similar to this one with full corner coverage.
i'm interested in this case too.
My case arrived!!!
So my case arrived today from Amazon, and I promised you all a review, so here goes:
1) Delivery & packaging
The case came via USPS - not UPS or FedEx. Ordered: Sunday, March 25th, 2012; delivered: Wednesday, March 28th, 2012. Came from San Diego, CA to Orlando, FL in 3 days. Not bad. The case was packed in a bubble-padded shipping envelope. A bit cheap considering I paid $4.99 in shipping & handling, but whatever.

Inside the bubble wrap was the case in it's manufacturer's packaging. Nice pack - obviously meant for hanging on a peg in a retail location. It's attractive and well-protected inside, and the package was not difficult at all to open. There is a fingernail tab in the top-right corner of the front face that lets you just lift off the front cover. No chance of scratching your case with scissors or a knife - a nice touch, I thought.
The reason I mentioned the nice packaging is that inside the outer packaging, the case is resting inside ANOTHER plastic tray (this one without a face), providing an extra layer of cushioning and protection from crushing. It's obvious that whoever thought up the packaging design took care to remember the leather case inside...
2) Aesthetics and General Fit/Finish
This is a NICE case! The edges have all been finished and are not ragged like some other cases I've seen. Everything is glued instead of stitched, so we'll see how well that holds up over the long-term, but so far, so good - nothing is loose or peeling. There is a small company logo on the front in the bottom-left corner and another one (with a tagline) on the back in the bottom-center. Both are small and non-obtrusive.
3) SPECIFIC Fit and Finish
My 1st surprise was to find out that the cover MAGNETICALLY sticks to the case to close - a pleasant surprise! The 2nd surprise was to find a wallet-like card pouch on the inside with 2 slots for credit cards. Um, this was NOT in the pictures on the website and MAY be a problem when I install my SPIGEN SGP GLAS t. Premium Tempered Glass Series Screen Protector which arrives tomorrow. I will report back on this when it's installed.
The 3rd surprise was that there were no cutouts on the sides for power and volume up/down. I think I actually like this, as the leather is marked with the button positions and is soft enough that you can get the buttons to do what you want without *mashing* the leather. The top is wide open so you can slip the phone in the case, and the bottom has cutouts for the S-Pen, Mic, and USB port.
Top opening:
Bottom:
Right Side (Power):
Left Side (Volume):
Inside Flap:
As you can see from the last picture, there's a full-size hole for the earpiece and front-facing camera. The rear of the case also has cut-outs for the camera/flash and speaker. both are proportional and not overly large.
4) Summary
So, do I think it was worth $50 (by the time shipping was involved)? Yes. I think this is very much so a world of 'you get what you pay for', and I think this case is a well crafted, quality leather product. I'd expect to pay this much or more for a leather wallet, so I have no qualms about the price of this cover. The only trepidation I have is the credit card holder inside the front flap. I will never put any cards in it, and I would prefer the case not to have it (as was depicted in the images on their website), but it's not a deal breaker. The leather itself is smooth (non-grain) and evenly dyed, with no visible imperfections (barbed wire scars, dimples, etc.). It is genuine leather, not faux leather or any other synthetic fabric. Overall it does add appx. half-again the thickness of the phone, but it's not unmanageable.
Overall rating: 8/10 - ********_ _ - 2 Stars off for the credit card thing inside the front flap and not being shipped in a cardboard box for a bit more protection.

Thanks for the review. It's a really good one and very useful. My only concern is that the phone seems could slip out from the top easily. Am I right?

It doesn't slip out the top, but when you plug the charger in from the bottom, it does 'push' out the top a bit. A quick push back into the case, and all is good.

This case isn't the wallet one. This is just a phone case. They make a wallet version. As I posted in my review, I was surprised it had the credit card slots, as the original pictures on the website didn't show this.
As a follow-up, here are a few quick observations:
1) With the cover open and flipped around the back, the speaker is VERY DIFFICULT to hear. I've missed calls because I didn't hear the ringer.
2) Same problem with it sitting flat on a surface (like a desktop). The leather is so smooth it effectively blocks sound from the speaker. I find myself leaning it up on a pen or something just so there's an air pocket underneath.
3) It slips very easily into my pocket. I thought this was going to be an issue, but it's very smooth and slides nicely into my front pocket.
That's it for now - will report back as more questions pop up and/or I have more observations to post.
how is the thickness with having credit cards? ..is it awkward when talking on the phone, do you leave the cover closed or flip it back? as far as speaker ..my phone is always on silent ..while at work ..i only ask because i ordered a cheap $10. wallet "leather case off ebay..i love the concept but damn its bulky!!! its only temporary until you finish your review of the elago

Sorry, I didn't see this post update - so here are the answers to your questions:
1) Thickness with credit cards - I don't know, as I don't put any in there. Like I said in my original post, this case wasn't suppose to have a CC pouch. The original pictures didn't show it, and I would have preferred it without the pouch. Based on thickness, I would say that the cards would press against the glass (especially if you are using the Glas+ protector like I am). I've always found that putting cards in a flat cover like this causes the flat cover to distort, so I'm guessing that that's what would happen here, especially if you then put the phone in a pocket.
2) Is it awkward talking on the phone.... - Yes and no. Holding the phone with the case open is a bit cumbersome as the 'hinge' adds width when the cover is open. I rarely hold the phone up to my head, I'm either using the speaker or a bluetooth headset. One note - the back cover, when open and flipped around, COVERS the speaker port, causing the speaker sound to become VERY muted. I usually either stick a finger in between, or if I'm setting the case down, leave the flap open and stick a pen or something under the phone (again, laying the case flat on the desk also causes the muted speaker effect).
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks!
Just got mine. So far it looks good.not bulky. I still need to get used to this to comment.

So far, so good!
I get a lot of compliments on the case - it really does look very nice!
No issues regarding durability, wearability, etc. It's not getting dirty from handling, it's not scratched up (so far), and there are no places where the leather is separating, peeling, or otherwise failing.
Bottom line, I like it! Money well spent!
i will be ordering mine soon.. just want to make sure it has cc slots!!! thanks!!

Bear in mind:
1) It only has 2 CC slots, and...
2) It wasn't suppose to have any at all!
WHy would the corners be exposed? Makes no sense. Drop it and there goes the screen..
Which question for ppl who using the flip case... How do you feel when holding it?
I have a Samsung flip case and i hate it. Hard to hold unless take some extra steps to fold the front to the back. When the phone rings, take more time to "flip the cover"..... so inconvenienced.
With my TPU case i use the phone instantly whenever I need.

Trident Kraken AMS review

Hey guys, the Kraken AMS was finally available in red and i just jumped right in as i was waiting FOREVER for either Ballistic or Trident to make their most heavy duty cases available for our phones. Sadly Ballistic currently has no intention of releasing an HC model for the Evo LTE, so I went with this instead.
Before anybody says: "oh but the SG MAXX is heavy duty!" I looked at the layering for the SG Maxx and from the looks of it its a wraparound silicone with a slip-in screen protector and then a polycarb piece that fits over the back. The Kraken also has a silicone wrap but where it differs is the front polycarb and back polycarb interlock with each other as well as having grooves in the silicone for both the front and the back to sit in, which seems to me would make for a more solid case overall.
The packaging was super easy to open, its the kind of bubble pack that snaps together at the corners.

The case comes with a holster, and removable kickstand, more on the kickstand a little later.
On Trident's site it says that the Kraken's base layer is the perseus silicone case. I was initially using the blue HTC case that sprint gave us for the shipping delays, and that particular case was made of a denser silicone that held its shape well and felt solid. The perseus layer here however, is a bit thinner and as such i would not recommend using it alone since it does move out of position a lot. The only thing covered with the silicone on is the power button.
The front polycarb piece has long tabs along the sides that fit in to the grooves of the silicone piece. Trident says you can use the case like this without the back, and by the tight fitment which required that i actually kneed the silicone slightly to get it to slide under the tabs and engage, i would say you can just leave it as is. The front camera is not covered, there are openings for the sensors, and the speaker has a fine mesh over it. The screen protector is glossy on the outside, and slightly matte textured on the inside to avoid the bubbling you get when two glossy surfaces come in to contact, a la the early versions of the Ballistic HC for the OG Evo.
The third piece is the back, which contains the port covers for the headphone and usb ports, the covered buttons for camera and volume rocker, as well as the mount points for all the AMS accessories. The back piece wraps over the side of the front piece and fits in to plastic lugs molded into the front piece. The back camera is uncovered, and there is a belt loop under the rear speaker, which has a mesh covering it just like the front speaker.
It was a VERY tight fit, perhaps because i have the CF vinyl mod on my phone, which added a piece of paper worth of thickness. I had to hook the tabs in from the bottom, then clip the sides in place until i got to the top, where i had to do some olympic-class pinching of the tabs up top to get the whole thing together.
The completed case feels pretty sturdy in hand, though one thing i noticed immediately is that since the silicone doesn't cover the volume rocker and the rocker cover itself is plastic in the side, the buttons are not tightly engaged to the phone, so if you shake it you can hear some rattling at both the rocker as well as the camera button. They operate with little effort and are easy to hit, though if they were in your pocket you might accidently change the volume due to the lack of resistence.
The port covers do not extend in to the actual ports themselves, and are simply there for closing up the holes in the case. You can see in the pictures here that the ports do become quite recessed so some of those cables with right-angle heads may not be able to totally clear the case. I use a right angle micro usb with what i saw was a smaller connector than the other ones i was looking at on amazon, and it fit, albeit just barely.
Next up is the holster. Unlike the holsters from Seidio and some other companies, the one on the Kraken is a minimalistic clamp that goes around the midsection of the case, with a 360 rotation and release tab at the top. Its pretty minimalistic but it seems like it would look better on your belt when the phone is not in it as opposed to the holsters that have a backplate the size of the phone. It engages tightly and seems pretty secure, so it gets a pass from me though i don't use holsters often.
Lastly we have the kickstand. The kickstand is sold on their store as an AMS accessory but i think for Krakens they just include it in the kit. Looking at the pictures i didn't think it was going to be able to hold the phone up in the awkward reverse position we got on the stock kickstand to use while charging, but the kickstand kicks in the fully open position and is able to hold up the phone. It also locks in the closed position, and it took a bit of effort to get the thing to open in the first place so no worries about floppy kickstand syndrome.
If you don't mind the trident lettering being backwards in the closed position, you can also pull the kickstand out and flip it in the opposite orientation and it will hold the phone up like it did in the OG evo days while charging.
Lastly, a crude size comparison between the HTC silicone case, a Seidio rebranded Best Buy platinum case, and the Kraken.
EDIT: I said the back contained all the mount points for AMS accessories, but looking at it again i noticed that the mount points for the holster is actually on side of the FRONT piece, so if you want to use the holster with just the silicone and the front, you can. I don't currently see any accessories that makes use of the holster mount points so if you want to use AMS stuff you do indeed need to use the back piece, which does not attatch to the silicone without the front piece.
EDIT2: I totally didn't even think about testing this but NFC still works even through the thick case.
Pros
Case fits super tight
Kickstand is completely metal and can be flipped around, clips in to place in the closed positon as well as open position
Built-in screen protector, port covers and rocker/camera covers
Minimalistic holster has less of a nerd factor if you're going to use it
Modular (though i would just use the whole thing all the time)
Has some accessories that may come in handy in the form of AMS stuff on kraken's site
Has a strap loop on the back piece below the kickstand...for if you want to lanyard a brick to your neck or you're a japanese schoolgirl who wants a bouquet of hello kitty cell phone straps on your phone.
Cons
Expensive, 50 bucks is a lot of dough to drop on a $200 on contract phone, may be more worth it for retail customers
Both cameras are not covered. Has no chance of glare but it does open it up to damage.
Bulky. I don't have an otterbox defender or an SG Maxx to compare it to but it does add quite a bit of heft.
Rocker and camera buttons may rattle when shaken or moved.
Thickness of case renders some micro usb and headphone plugs unusable
Screen protector is glossy on the outside but slightly matte texture on the inside, may reduce clarity
Port covers may be susceptible for wear like on the Otterbox defender.
Red one came out after the pink one, seriously Trident, wtf??
Overall
Its big, its solid, you can probably knock someone out with it by throwing it. If you don't care about bulk and don't want to worry about the phone, this is a pretty good case to go with. On the other hand if you don't care for bulk at all, don't even bother checking this thing out, as it does turn your sexy thin phone in to a bit of a monster.
For people worried about the phone bending issue, i'm pretty sure this case will make it pretty much impossible to bend the phone while in your front pants pocket, then again i have a feeling front-pocket phone benders are wearing pants that are just right or tight fitting in the first place so you wouldn't really be able to fit this thing in those same pockets...so...yea, get some new pants you hipsters.
And finally, please please please save your breath if you're just going to come in here saying: "i prefer thin case i don't understand why you bought this". You don't need to as i didn't buy it with your money, and congrats on having an opinion :good:
Great review. Do you do this for a living? lol I believe you persuaded me to buy one.
SENT FROM MY EVO 4G LTE!!! (w/no LTE)
Nah i don't do this for a living, i just think it would be easier for me to cover as many concerns as possible so the thread doesn't turn in to a Q&A session.
I wonder how it will stand up to a car, my father is an automotive mechanic and today he had an impromptu fight, car vs phone. Car won and now he's waiting for a replacement
I have no desire to purchase one. I don't like the look and it's way too heavy and provides way more protection than I need. I knew this before I read your review, so you didn't really influence my decision.
But I'll be damned if that wasn't one of the most detailed and thorough accessory reviews I've ever read. Truly exceptional, and the pics especially were on point. Kudos to you sir. You should review every accessory you own and post it up, and put the links in your sig. Tons of people would benefit - you have a real talent for it.
I had high hopes for the delayed Trident Cyclops and Kraken cases and was planning to replace my Otterbox Defender with one of them. I used to love the workmanship and nice textured plastic feel of my Trident Cyclops for Evo 3D and hated the cheap rubbery silicone feel of the Otterbox Defender for 3D.
I was greatly disappointed to say the least. For the EVO LTE design cycle, the Defender has a very nice textured rubber outer layer, perfect fit and no rattling parts. The plastic texture on both the Cyclops and the Kraken seems to be a step down from Evo 3D days; Cyclops is now a 2-piece case with no inner silicone layer; the Kraken kickstand is a lot harder to operate than the built-in one; there's a lot of rattling in the buttons and creaking due to poor fitment. The four cylindrical side tabs that lock the front and back polycarbonate pieces are an improvement, but the really thin hooking tabs at the top and bottom do not work at all. To me, the only advantage Trident cases have are the dust filters.
I guess I'm keeping my Defender and hoping that the two extra outer layers that Otterbox sent me under warranty will be enough to last me to the next upgrade.
I have the kraken case trident green. Ordered the case on launch day.The only issues I have with it are as follows.the volume buttons stick out too far so my phone always ends up on silent. The camera button is entirely to Damn hard to press (except for half way) the charge port dust cover ripped off pulling the phone out of my pocket. The belt clip got hung on the seat belt of my ambulance and snapped like a twig. The fabled kick stand: don't use it too much the snapping feature fails and the kick stand gets super floppy remedy open kick stand place index finger perpendicular under the open kick stand and attempt to crush your index finger this makes the kick stand bend slightly just enough for the clamping action to hold tight. As for the kick stand holding the phone up while charging, don't open and close the kickstand too much because it will gouge the plastic on the back of the phone thus rendering the kick stand just about useless. No case has come close to the ballistic HC I had on my OG EVO

[REVIEW] WAWO Smart Fold Shell

This review is for the WAWO Smart Fold Shell for the SM-P905/P900 as seen here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HKFPRGK/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I'm reviewing it from the perspective of a SM-P900 owner and make no claims that a SM-P905 will work in the same way with this case.
The case is a mix of faux leather and plastic with faux suede interior. There is no stitching, everything is glued; whether or not this means reduced longevity remains to be seen.

Cutouts for the sides are quite large, and access to the S-Pen is easy.
Cutouts are available for the rear facing camera and IR blaster.
The orientation of the tablet within the case is upside down. Personally although it will take a little time to get used to this I think I'll like it. It allows for the tablet to be propped up at an angle in landscape mode with touch typing on the landscape keyboard without worry of resting one's thumbs on the bezel and inadvertently hitting the Home/Task/Back buttons.
Of course as with other cases of this type the tablet can be situated for video viewing or better viewing when being used in conjunction with a bluetooth keyboard.
All in all I like this case. It doesn't add much thickness to the tablet at all. Bare, the tablet is approximately the thickness of 5 US quarters stacked together. With this case that thickness grows to 8 US quarters (0.5-inches total thickness).
The case has a few magnets situated along the edge to keep the top cover from flapping open when carried in the hand upside down. Generally I'd say these magnets are not strong enough, the case can be flapped open when twisted around rapidly.
The top cover works just like the smart covers for iPads, whereby the opening of the cover turns on/off the tablet and if you have the Daynote option enabled (Settings-General-Accessory-Book Cover) then the day note screen shown in my photos will pop up every time you open the case.
My one concern is with this case is the metal grip that is on the edge of the front cover. The top of the molded case that the tablet is in sits flush with the surface of the tablet. The metal grip on the front cover serves two purposes, as a grip to grab onto to open (reducing wear on the edge of the leather cover) and as a metal surface for the magnet in the molded plastic to adhere to in order to keep the cover closed. See below.
My issue with the design here is my concern that the metal grip can potentially crack the screen if the front cover is allowed to drop closed quickly. I've placed a temporary piece of trasnparent tape over the area of the glass where the metal grip touches the glass for now until I find a more elegant solution (thinking of covering the metal with a thin piece of gray microfiber).
Other than that issue I'm liking the case thus far. You can't beat the price of this thing compared to the Samsung Book Cover. Even if it doesn't last very long one could purchase spares and still come out ahead (in fact I'll likely purchase a couple more now just in case).

I got the same case and I noticed the same problem.. I didn't want to damage the screen. But I have mine standing up with the 3 fold 99% of the time. But definitely let me know if you find a better solution
Nice review.
I had this case for the 10.1 2014 edition and was fairly satisfied with it. Offers nice scratch protection...thought probably wouldn't offer much in the way of drop protection.
You have to be very careful taking the cover off. When I removed mine, it grabbed onto the silver edge of the tablet and displaced it. Fortunately, I was able to reseat it...but it could have been bad.
Have the case as well. ...I do like it. I will say that it definitely adds some weight to the device. Have the poetic slim case on pre order. I am hoping that that case is lighter. I have it for the note 10.1 2014 edition and really liked it.

Let us know how it goes.
Also there seems to be a dozen or so brands of this same case floating around.
