Dopod 838 Pro - Chinese to English? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

I'm new to the forums so please forgive 'newbie' type questions. I have a friend in Hong Kong this week looking for a Hermes based device for me to use in the States. He found the Dopod 838 Pro at a decent price. Only problem, they are out of the English versions. I don't mind not having the manual however he was told that when powered on the device will be in Chinese.
So, is there more to switching this to English then just changing software configuration? Will this need a new ROM image installed? What other downsides are there to buying a chinese based phone and converting it to english? keys? handwriting recognition? Am I better off holding off and looking for the english version?
If someone knows of a place to pick up the English version of the Dopod 838 Pro, please email me.
Thanks
David

You can flash an english (WWE) version and all the software will be in english. Your hardware keyboard will have chinese signs, but it's a standard QWERTY keyboard that can be used also in english without problems. The English manual is on the FTP in pdf format, and handwriting recognition is something handled by the rom (software) so after flahing an english ROM into it you will have a complete english device. If the price is ok, I'd go for it without hesitating. I also recommend you to spend some time reading the wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes

Thanks for the quick response. I'll look for the FTP (new to forums so haven't figured out where to find everything yet). Only concern I have about this, is when turning on the device it will be in Chinese. How do I navigate through the first time setup menus and then get to wherever i need to be to accept the rom upgrade?
Do each of the ROMs posted come with the installation tools as well?
Thanks again
David

The wiki has almost everything you need to know, and best of all is that you can EDIT the pages and add the information you believe is missing, it's a collaborative tool, so I encourage you (and everyone reading this) to edit the wiki pages and fill them with info, so everyone can benefit.
Start by reading the section "Hermes for beginners" which will help you getting started with your new device:

You don't even need to turn it on to perform the rom upgrade, just put the device in BOOTLOADER mode (instructions also in the wiki):
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Resets
Connect the device to your computer using USB cable, and double click on the EXE file to perform ROM upgrade, its a typical windows installer were you just have to click "NEXT, NEXT, NEXT..." several times.
All available ROM upgrades are also in the wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Upgrades
You need to download an WWE (World Wide English) version.

Yes, it's a very easy proces which will take about 20minutes.
As I said before, the wiki is your friend, After you've read the "Hermes for Beginners", you can go to the "Upgrading FAQs":
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeFAQ
And if you have any problems upgrading, read the "Common upgrading problems" page:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeProblems
Good luck!

Thanks for the quick and detailed response! It sounds like I'll need to see some prompts on the device ino order to get it to bootloader. As it is in chinese and I don't know chinese at all I'm not sure I'll know how to navigate through it.
I also understand some of the physical keyboard buttons are different than the english version.
My friend in Hong Kong is waiting for the 'thumbs up' to buy the non-english version. I'm still a bit hesitant ... need some convincing today so I can tell him what to do before leaving Hong Kong tomorrow. Unless, someone knows where he can find an english one??!!
Thanks
David

Bootloader is in english in all the devices, the operating system (WM5) language it's just software, it's on the ROM. But when you enter in the bootloader the OS has still not started, so it will be in english even if you buy a chinese, spanish, german or whatever device.

What about the keyboard on the Chinese version of the Dopod Pro?

Ask your friend to buy O2 Trion instead in HK... they will flash it for you and the price is much lower than dopod838pro.
Since you live in US... warranty dont matter..right ?

T-Mobile MDAII ROM conversion from German to English

Can you confirm that the download RUU16006WWE_T-mobile_NL.exe is safe to convert German version of ROM to English?
The download is at URL: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/cellpoint/tmobilemdaii.html
Any experience from those who tried that?
Thanks,

language is 100% controlled by the rom
so if you upgrade your device with a rom in a surden

To be more exact: the rom is here @ http://xda-developers.com/incoming/rom160wwe/RUU16006WWE_T-mobile_NL.exe
This ROM works without a problem on a German T-Mobile MDA II.
Don't know where you plan to buy it, but there are several German resellers who ship worldwide.
Take a look @ http://www.handit.de/index.php?fuseaction=shop&katid=64
You can mail them in English, but it can take some time before they reply.
Grtz,
Jos
Thank you very much.
I have already purchased the T-Mobile MDAII from Germany (Gigatech.de).
What I am not sure about is whether the change of ROM will cause erasing even MS Pocket PC programs (Excel, Word, ...) or whether they are part of the ROM and will be re-installed automatically.
Do you have this experience. I would really appreciate your reply.
Thanks and regs,
V. Nezval
Good price
You purchased that MDAII at a very good price.
I believe that these are at the rom, and therefore will change language (my experience),
but what is the real problem, if they erase they come back on the rom, if they don't erase they stay on the machine - win win situation

O2 Trion and T-Mobile Vario II ->ROM upgrade to HTC TyTn

Hi all,
I'm quite new at ROM upgrading, so I apologize if any of my questions will be annoying to anyone.
I am about to buy O2 XDA Trion or T-Mobile MDA Vario II in Germany, and I plan to flash English ROM on it.
So here are the questions:
1. Will any type of ROM work on this brands of device ?
(Can I flash HTC TyTn English ROM on them. If not which ROM's can I use? Which one do you recommend?)
2. Will flashing new ROM unlock SIM ?
(If not, can you recommend me some good tool or method)
3. After upgrade to English ROM, will everything be in English ?
(Including all OS+Office apps. and keyboard layout, or do I have to set registry keys manually after?)
4. Which is the last known stable English HTC TyTn ROM (or O2 English) ?
(that it's enabling HSDPA also)
5. How to extract original ROM from device ?
(itsutils tool, or is there some better solution ?)
6. What is the benefit of Extended ROM ?
(does it exist Extended HTC TyTn ROM ?)
Already searched on forum, but still couldn't find answers to some of my questions. Anyway, I want to be sure before I do it.
I would appreciate any answers and/or advice.
Thank you all in advance.

No, it will not, but most probably your device will be Sim Unlocked.
If it is not, there is no free way of unlocking it *yet*, you can SIM Unlock it using imei-check service for 20pounds. See more info here:

Everything will be in english, but in German O2 trion you have an AZERTY keyboard (mapped to QWERTY after upgrade). If you want it to be AZERTY again you can change the layout using the keyboard registry hack found here:

Re: O2 Trion and T-Mobile Vario II ->ROM upgrade to HTC T
Thanks Pof for quick answers !
Correct me if I understood it wrong, any ROM (HTC, O2 English, I-mate etc.) should work with both brands (O2, T-Mobile) ?
How can I then fall back to original ROM (if I would need it for warranty reasons) ?
Is the Extended ROM must, or can I live without it also ?

That's right, you will get a Vendor ID when upgrading, you just need to run the upgrade utility twice without disconnecting your device. This is explained in the wiki too.

As O2 or T-Mobile has not released any rom upgrade yet, you cannot fall back to original rom. There is no known way of doing it because the typical commands to backup/restore to SD card have been removed in the Hermes bootloader. So upgrade at your own risk or don't upgrade if you pretend to return the unit

You can live without it, but generally it fixes some things (you'll not be able to do video calls without it for example). All the cabs are not needed and there are some customizations, skins, etc which are really annoying for me. What I generally do is "reset" before the ExtROM installs on first boot after hard-reset, and then manually install the cabs I want: some taken from TyTN rom, some others taken from i-mate rom and some others taken from Dopod rom.
Hope that helps!
Upgrading at your own risk ... that may be risky ... LOL
But i did it and its worth,...... still waiting for the new O2 ROM ...
I've written a wiki page with all this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeFAQ
Can I flash HTC ROM and then add O2 Extended ROM ?
Will I then have all O2 specific stuff, and O2 skins?
Did anybody already tried this combination ?
Thanks in advance...

The O2 released ROM is in german, if the original language of your O2 branded Hermes was german, then the above statement is correct and you can flash any rom without worries as you can always revert back to o2 in case you have to return your unit

Qtek s200 WM6 questions

I have a few questions about flashing my qtek s200, hope one of you guys could answer them. I have read around in the forums, and came to the conclusion that the simplest way to flash it would be with Prophet Tools 2.8.3 is that correct?
I was hoping to get to download the pdaviet 4.0.0.0.6 touch rom, but all download links is broken and pdaviet application cant connect to server. Does anyone know were to download this rom, or have a link, suggestion on another rom with touch interface embedded?
I have also read alot on this forum about problems with bluetooth, irDa and wifi when you flash your prophet device. Maybe someone has a suggestion on a rom that does not have this problems, and also isnt filled with third party applications. I would like a clean rom, so I can install my apps myself.
Thanks in advance.
/Andreas
I would personally use Prophet Tools (but I am slightly biased...).
By "Touch Interface" do you mean the cube or just being able to use your finger to scroll?
For the cube, I'd go with a ROM based on Gullums Prophet Touch X (quite old) or one based on Cloudyfas ShadoW 2 TE (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364430). Both are stable ROMs and both run well.
If you just want the finger scrolling part, Cloudyfas latest ROM, and the ROMs based on that are fast and stable (including my own, ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=391907)
Yes i mean the cube interface, but also I checked your rom out just now, and it looks interesting also. If I have got everything right the simple way to do this is as follows.
Find XP workstation
1. Hardspl
2. Use prophet tools
3. Be happy
Am I right?
Will there be any issuses worth conseidering about which operator I use, live in Sweden and uses Telia.
Is the 1.3 the newest one of your roms? And does it have letter and block recognizer included?
XP is advised (vista has some driver bugs)...
I would say:
1. Use Prophet Tools (to hardSPL, but SIM unlock your device first unless it has already been SIM unlocked)
2. Flash a ROM
3. Be Happy!
There shouldn't be operator issues (many new ROMs have a tool for setting up the device with operator specific settings).
I'm currently uploading a newer version of my ROM (1.4) which should be up in about 10 minutes.
With sim unlock, you mean if the device is locked to a specific operator (such as vodafone) or do you mean something else? It is not locked to an operator.
And one more thing, swedish language (not in menus, but when typing sms and such things)In other word, special signs that we use in sweden. Such as Å Ä Ö are they included, selectable in this rom?

I don't think so... For multi lingual things, Gullums Coffie ROMs are probably the best...
Ok, to bad. I can live with the fact that the menus and such things are in english, but I can't live with the fact that I can't write sms/mms without swedish letters.
I will have a look att the multilingual roms though.
I may work on a multilingual ROM, but not atm as I have exams and other work...
u can find some keyboard applications to write with letters in your language.
i use English menus and program names but LEng keyboard gives me all i need to write in Turkish (it was in prophet box when i bought it). Full pack has ability to make interface translation but i think there is no updated version for WM6. Search the web: "penreader LEng language extender Swedish" you can find a trial.
Also there is HTC Diamond keyboard. Gullum added some more languages, but i think Swedish is not in them yet, maybe he can add:

no, it is not specific to any rom, you can try..
Hm, yes I could do that if I were certain that it should work, because if it doesn't work I have no way to get my swedish wm5 back. At least no way that I know of yet..

But it seems that if I cid-unlock it as decribed in wiki, then it installs another rom. So if thats the case I lose my swedish WM5 rom anyhow.

When I hardspl:ed with prophettools, I got an error message that the program couldnt communicate with the phone (under the RUU part) and the phone displayed a white screen. Is that normal? The phone works just fine after soft reset. Btw, are you supposed to boot the phone to "os" and then hardspl, or are you supposed to have it in bootloader mode?
The wiki seems down, so if anyone could post the command for dumping the rom with tera term it would be greatly appriceated. Thanks.

If prophet Tools doesn't work, use the "update Package" in the Upgrade guide sticky thread.
The White screen is normal. That is what the first part of HardSPL does.

No problem at all. Except this European WWE does not allow Chinese Display fonts. Don't know why yet. I didn't come across that problem before. I asked HTC, the tech guy named Philp refused to help quoting company policy that I either to log in HTC in Europe and he knew they couldn't help. He said he will not help Dopod phone either. These turkeys own Dopod and made phone for Dopod and Dopod charged nearly double for that brand name in China. Why they draw such stupid lines among themselves I really don't know.

Could you please explain what those files are and if there is a way already to use them for swapping with the stock rom version? Thanks
That board here seems mighty, but somehow most people are so used to know a lot about what can be done, that it is a bit difficult to get into it, when you are new to all that.
The first one maybe an Italian ROM for Iolite.
The Second on is WWE Europe ROM for Iolite which is what I am using for about a month now.
Connect an USB cable from your PC to the phone and run the file. It will overwrite your phone with the WWE Europe ROM.
Thanks a lot
As far as I understand, it won't be possible when my Iolite is CID-locked, and it will flash if it is not.
But in general, how big is the chance that I might end up with a brick and if so, is there a way to recover it?

Thanks a lot
As far as I understand, it won't be possible when my Iolite is CID-locked, and it will flash if it is not.

Normally, it either flashes or comes back with an error message and no harm done. Just don't unplug the cable while things are going on. The program will check for success and if not it will show you how to do recovery.
Hi, what languages contains the WWE Europe ROM please?
Thank you
WWE is English ROM.
It does not matter it is Europe, Asia or U.S.A. I guess WWE stands for World Wide English. The differences I found usually in the customization especially the "Connection Setup". Each country has different service providers. For example, you will find AT&T in U.S.A. ROM. Asia one will have HongKong operator, Malaysia...
Sometimes they overlap.
Difference are minor. But they do show with different ROM version numbers.

I've tried to install it but I have the following error :
ERROR 294 : invalid vendor id
I guess that's because my phone is not european ? I need to CID unlock it right ?
Thanks

Dears, I've got the same problem and my phone was bought in Tianjin, China with Dopod ROM preinstalled.
Hi jychan28, I guess we bought the same model but how did you flash the WWE rom successfully? Thanks.
WWE (Europe) without HardSPL
PLEASE ADVICE !!!
I have a question to advanced lolite users:
I have German ROM on my xda Guide (lolite).
Can I replace this rom by "HTC Iolite - 1.09.401.3 - WWE (Europe)" provided by udk without HardSPL?
Can I just connect my phone via Windows Mobile Device Center and run "RUU_Iolite_HTC_Europe_1.09.401.3_Radio_Sign_12.41 .30.16_0.41.30.12_Ship.exe" ROM provided by udk without installing Hard SPL first?
Anyone tried this soulution?
Please advice!
Many thanks in advance for the answer!
