I've seen and asked about a problem some are having with wired gps - tomtom 5.x and wm2005 - well I've cured it and I have to confess I don't know the actual reason because I tried a couple of things between testing.
1. I DELETED all my POIs - I think TomTom looks all over the place for them so as I had some for france etc I had upwards of 200 (I don't think what I'm seeing is the specific POI issue - also when I tried looking for the poifix the link is broken)
2. I got a registry editor and deleted all references to GPS (and also the extra power icon in cpl) as I thought it may be the wm2005 gps as it doesn't really seem to do anything.
3. I then copied the 3 largest files on my sd card in gb maps - deleted the originals and renamed the new ones back to the old names (simply copy and paste - delete the original - and rename by deleting "copy of" - the thinking was to make the files more contiguous and give the software a fighting chance of getting the map data fast enough.
If anyone narrows it down to the specific problem (I know some have said 1. didn't do it) can they advise and also if anyone knows where there is a working poifix for tomtom 5.0
So I'm off to add a more reasonable 20 POI back (speed cameras of course!!......... oh and McDonalds)

I had the same problem with my BT GPS receiver, I cured it by installing a different version of WM2005 from buzz' site http://www.buzzdev.net/
the version I used was WM2K52.01a64WWE
I have several maps for Tom Tom,which i received from a friend. The problem that i am having is that whenever i connect via usb and try to use the Tom Tom Home to load the maps(Even putting them in the correct folder on the pc)It still will not show them up.Any ideas on what im doing wrong? And this version that comes with the device is (compared to the other software that is out now)kind of old in the tom tom family.Anyone with any ideas or help would be good.
Last question is that when it trys to update, via the cable connected to the pc,no matter if i try to update the phone data base to the micro drive or internal memory it tells me that the drive is read only.If i put in my memory card it will say that it cannot access the file.
regards
Are the maps for version 6 of TomTom? versions lower than 6 will not work. If they are version 6, did your friend activate any of the maps from the package he purchased? If yes, they probably will not activate on your pda unless you call TomTom and have them switch the activation from your old pda( your friends) to your new pda...But that would not cause the problem of transfering them to your device. Did you upgrade your version of TomTom home? they have had several upgrades to the home app. Man, I hate that Home app. It was much easier just copying the maps to your sdcard or microdrive.
I have tom tom home on the pc .but they said you should have it on the phone as well, but its not there, ony tom tom.and i dont know what version the maps are

Tom-Tom on the Ameo with all the maps of western europe loaded runs like a dog.
Pop along to your nearest torrent site and find iGO, load up and give it a try - it's much better than Tom-Tom (only IMHO), the maps load and scroll quicker and it is just more visually pleasing.
Make sure you have Bluetooth Explorer UNTICKED. Reset your device and it should find the maps.

Wow, I looked at the iGo website http://www.i-go.com/en/index.php and it looks very nice. Too bad they don't have it for the US yet...unless I missed something.

I should have checked first before posting - yeah, unfortunately they only do Europe at the moment. They are expanding though, and because they use Tele-Atlas maps it shouldn't be too long before they do USA & Canada.
Another good thing about iGo is that you don't have to have a PC installer. You just copy to SD/MD and run.

No problem, I used TomTom Mobile in all it's different guises over the years and then a friend suggested iGo. I took TomTom off after only 1 trip with iGo. The only problem I've found so far is that it can't find Pizza Hut in Monchengladbach!
I should have checked first before posting - yeah, unfortunately they only do Europe at the moment. -->>Incorrect m8.After doing some research i have IGO My Way 2006 Plus version with US Maps as well as US voices.A bit tedious to set up and put the US voices in the correct place but its ALOT easier to use ,than tom tom which has restrictions out the whatoozie...good suggestion m8!
Cut tomtom maps?
Is it possible to cut tomtom navigator 6 maps? I have the USA and Canada maps which take 1GB. I don't want to store all of this on my 2GB miniSD card (I need space for music and stuff), especially since I only need maps of California. I know, one solution is to carry another card, but I don't want to do that. I have tried that and it's really annoying having to switch cards all the time.

You might want to try iGuidance, which allows you to load start (even part of state) maps for US and Canada. http://www.inavcorp.com/
I find this an effective solution.

Good deal. I'll definately not go back to TomTom - Hopefully will be getting the Jan 2007 upgrade shortly which should address some of the errant POIs.
One thing I haven't managed to find is a speed camera database for Germany for it.
If anyone knows where I can find one then please let us all know.
I've heard you can't use the new TomTom 7 on this device because it has no touchscreen.
Has anyone experience with navigation software on the Rose?
The servicedesk of Tomtom couldn't answer my question because they weren't familiar with this device yet.
I'm using Copilot Live 7, works like a charm.
Well, technically you can use TomTom 7. You just have to use FakeCursor (or similar utility) to emulate screen taps. I have tried it and it works, but is not really usable.
So far I have also tried:
Garmin XT Mobile - does work, but I don't like the interface
Sygic McGuider - does work and I like it, use it and recommend it
TomTom 5.xx - does work, but has only older maps available
I tried TomTom 7 and it won't work because you need to be able to tap the screen. I didn't even know you can use a programme that emulates screen taps.
I'm off to bed!
Do not lose your time and use Sygic McGuider. It is best I can recommend for the smartphone.

Just checked it out but not done anything yet as waiting for my Rose to be delivered but it doesn't mention anything about cost. So then, is this a free GPS?
I believe it isn't. This site (in Slovak) http://www.presne.sk/sygic-mcguider-p405 lists it for 66€.
I use Garmin Mobile XT and it works great for me. They have a non-touchscreen version. Here are some screen shots. Alternatively, you could use google maps
could you tell us some more details for garmin mobile xt?
is it fast in menu?
is the root recalculation fast enough?
input text with qwerty and phonepad?
works in landscape when the qwerty is open?
Garmin is nice software and maps for my country are ok, but it's "too much" for my old and tired tornado. I think qualcom @520Mhz must be ok with this...

did you check your settings in settings-display-backlight override menu? what happens if "always on" option is enabled?
I have used Garmin Mobile XT firstly on a Win2003SE device, then WM5 , WM6 Pro and now WM6.1 standard and it has worked fine for all my devices. I don't really have any complain. It routes fine without any problems.
i tried tomtom 5 but it doesent work (crashes at start)
I've tried tomtom 5, doesent crach to me but... doesent see the internal gps
It is a known problem; not finding the internal gps. But if I remember correctly there's a fix for it.
Tomtom V6 not working?
Garmin Mobile XT?
Which Garmin Mobile XTversion are you using?
I installed the one I had and I can't get it out of the impression that there is some Bluetooth GPS dongle to find?

I can get tomtom 5.20 to work, but it doesn't recognize the internal gps.

I can confirm this, Mcguider is the best navigation software i have used thus far.
Its more accurate and faster than tomtom.
Its not free but tomtom is not as well.
if you buy it its €80,- otherwise you can always look for it in your favorite download channels (can not advertise those on these forums)
As I saw Sygic McGuider 2009 comes preinstalled on a 4GB microSDHC card (with 2GB free for other use :-( ). Can I copy the SW onto my 8GB card and it still works?
Most probably yes.
Hello Friends,
Yesterday i got my NEW HTC S740 smartphone! I have to say that i'm really newbie to smartphones but i love this phone!!
I found all the features of the phone and i have to say that i'm very pleased with it! My problem is that i can't - fear to connect the phone to my computer!!
When i insert the cd of HTC in my computer it asks me to download Flash player. I download flash player and then i install it on my computer but i still can't open the cd!! Also i have installed Active Sync 4.5 on my pc! What i wanna ask is, can i connect the S740 on my pc with only Active Sync 4.5 or i have to install the program of HTC (the one i can't find because i don't have flash player)?? How can i fix the problem with flash player?
thanks in advance
My Activesync has probs with Vista
Not sure if this helps but from memory my activesync didnt work with vista and I needed some other syncing software for vista. I found it pretty easy so do a google search on syncing problems here.
I now sync my TYTN2 to my iMac and it works great as the iTunes all come across with no probs.
Enjoy
My friend i have XP! What about the problem with flash player? Why i can't read the cd?
In fact, if you've installed ActiveSync, you don't need anything else from the CD (maybe except User's Guide from the second disk). It contains (packed in Flash animations) just sync programs and few links. Anyway, if so curious, try to explore the CD and run start.exe directly from there...
Working ActiveSync should sit (greyed) now in the System Tray on the right side of the XP's bottom Taskbar. Right click over the icon and choose Connection Settigs... On following dialog first check the box Allow USB Connection.
When you'll connect your Rose to the machine now, it will start working without hassles. If any problems, first check the manual and if lost anyway, let us know again.
Ok i will try to connect with Active Sync!
WOW it worked!! thank you my friend!! Does the cd contain anything else useful?
Not really... Just links to WM 6.1 Home on Microsoft... Have a look there on TotalAccess, they're some freebies avalable.
On little trick for other places - open the connection dialog (as above) again and have a look, if the last box (Allow wireles...) is UNchecked. If so, hanged on USB your Rose will connect to internet trougth PC - it's faster and 100% "free".
And have a look on your built-in mobile favourites on Rose - you'll find a HTC page with few links. One little warning - you'll find there a link to Adobe FlashLiite, which does not work on Rose... Good tip is to check Google Maps application and maybe SkyFire (alternate browser with YouTube support).
As Pocket Internet Explorer tends to ignore WiFi connection, alternate browser is good to have anyway. Another, very solid option is Opera Mini. Just be aware - it's Java application. After installation you'll find it in Java console (it's in Accessories folder).
Enjoy!
thank you me friend for giving me these useful tips! It's really helpfull and will help me understand better my smartphone!!
P.S. How can i see youtube and generally streaming videos on my S740? I visited youtube but i couldn't watch videos!!
Until Adobe will understand, that WM 6.1 Standard has no limitations in that (the FlashLite just denies to install), as far as I know, the only way I see is the SkyFire browser as mentioned above. Just read Privacy statement on their site first, you'd probably not like info they're collecting...
Oh ok! And something last...
I want to buy an extra card because i need more space! What kind of card does it take?? Micro sd or Mini sd?? Confusing!
Micro. Don't be confused, on commercial photos they look the same, because usually sold with adapter in Mini size (micro is then just delivered inserted in the adapter).
Crossfingers with inserting card into the slot as this is only thing which drove me insane on early beginning...
Therefore I would recommend you the largest possible card to avoid a need to change it. As Rose supports the latest standards of SD Cards, you can use any size up to 32GB. Speed of the card isn't really critical - major snail in file operations is Windows Mobile file system. But this is area of little wizardry, because it depends on size, brand etc. With hight probability the most critical operation from this POV is video capturing by built-in camera.
So my recommendation is - don't spend money for useless speed, prefere size (otherwise you'll after few changes of cards in the slot throw Rose against the wall ;-) ). And if possible, just for sure, try to record some video on the card in highest size first directly in the shop and you'll see...
So, what i need is a Micro Sd card 32GB? Right?
Yeap. First word of my previous post...
Obviously, smaller sizes works as well and some (1-2 gigs) are today sold for nothing...
Maybe it's time to open 2nd CD with the manual (promise - no flash, just PDF file). I understand first confusions if somebody meets first Windows Mobile phone and enthusiasm (especially in combination WM + Rose ;-) ) should be supported.
Nevertheless in this stage manual would be faster than me (leaving for single malt "dinner" with friends ).
Ok my friend. Thank you for all your help! I will open the manual!!
I) PLEASE HELP,
II) THANK YOU FOR THE PATIENCE OF READING THE POST
This is the first time in my life that I own an Touch Screen Smartphone, which has Android in it.
Please give me some advices (how to install, how to set things up, etc) and suggestions regarding GPS offline software.
Last year, I got LOST IN THE WOODS in a MOUNTANS but I GOT LUCK as I had carrier network and I was able to use google maps on my phone at that time a Sony Ericsson Elm (not a rugged phone, it breaks very easy as is fragile, is not smartphone, is not having android, symbian, bada etc, as is a "java" phone but it has an online google maps and tiny gps reciver).
This saved my life. I got luck as I did find an area with no trees as the trees are "obfuscating" the gps satelite signal, and I got luck because I had an Carrier signal for internet connection.
However, if the scenario repeats and I got in the woods on the mountain again, or when I am driving I need an Navigation Offline GPS software with the maps stored on the external memory card. For getting out from the wood OsmAnd is okay, but is horrible for navigation.
The phone I have is Sony Xperia L, which has a screen of 480 x 854 pixels, 4.3 inches
I wish to install a GPS software which has the following characteristics:
- Maps Stored for Offline use On the microSD card (microSDHC), not in the phone or the internal sdcard memory
- Navigation turn by turn with voice guidance.
- Calculation of the route with no internet connection required
- 3D (bird's-eye view) mapping navigation mode
Till now I have found the following Offline Gps Applications but far now none of them dose not fit, or I don't know how to install and configure them:
1) iGO Primo for Android
2) Sygic
3) CoPilot
4) OsmAnd && OsmAnd+
5) TomTom
6) Google Maps
7) Here Maps (by nokia)
EDIT Added:
8) Navitel
>>> Did I forget something, is there another Offline Gps Software <<<
1) iGO problems on Sony Xperia L, screen resolution. I badly wish this app but it dose't work. On the official iGO site they say something like this "iGO Primo for android is ONLY for the corporate business users, - not for home users like you god dammit "
-If I install iGO Primo for Android, when I rotate the phone from "Portratit" to "Landscape", the app remain in "portratit" and the buttons are not working, If I swich the phone back into "portratit" position the app runs fine again.
-If I put the phone in "landscape" and then start the aplication the iGo Primo for android gives the following error:
" User interface resolution [729x442] is not supported or compatibile skin can not be found. Exiting aplication. "
It dose not matter that I install the application from torrents (multiresolution .apk or optimized for a specific resolution, in my case 854x480 - Xperia L) or the version for israel from the official google play store - " iGo Primo Israel free "
2) Sygic
- I don't know / could not find the settings on how to move the maps on the microSDHC card that I have, or to set up sygic to read the maps from the External Removable Memory
- The version I had, It has poor maps for some of the eastern europe country
3) CoPilot
- It seems that this app is storing the maps inside the phone memory (sdcard0) not in the external memory sdhc microsd card (sdcard1), with no seting to move the maps (like Syginc)
4) OsmAnd
- Is not having "bird view", BUT is able to STORE and "read" the maps from the external memory card
- UNABLE to calculate longer routes (more than 150kms)
- Is it very AWARD and HARD to input a "navigate to this adress", compared to others app
5) TomTom
- I was unable to find a tomtom app in google play store, on torrens, I did find only maps, and not the aplication byitself.
6) GoogleMaps
- It require INTERNET CONNECTION for route calculating
- It has some restriction, as you can save ONLY SOME parts of the map for offline use like a city / county but not all Europe+Uk & Usa
- It is NOT storing the maps on the microSD / external memory card
- I for a non-internet/not-a computer user, the menu of saving a little piece of the map is very well and good hidden (my old father for example)
7) Here maps from Nokia.
- It require am INTERNET connection
- Altrough it has a "saving" option like Google Maps, it dose not storing the map on the EXTERNAL MEMORY
8) Navitel
- As I saw, the maps it is having native (Russia, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria) are very detailed but it has no USA / CANADA maps, how it is possible to convert the open street maps for navitel?

Try Locus. You can download maps for any area you select / any zoom level in the map and can store the offline maps in the external card. The maps can also be downloaded using MOBAC (Mobile Atlas Creator) in the PC in sqlite format and copied to the sd card.
