Hello all, I have a 1gb SD Card that seems to be missing several MBs, if I goto the SD card in Resco and select all files and folders it shows a total used of 456mb but if I click on the SD card in Resco explorer and choose properties it shows 173mb left and a total used of 787mb.
What is even stranger both methods shows the same number of files and folders.
its a real pain since I can't do a full backup because their is not enough space but clearly their should be.

As a new user/owner of the Siemens SX56, I have quickly discovered the limitations of the units memory/storage capabilities.
While I may not be using the correct rhetoric (please correct me where necessary) I am hoping someone might be able to help me.
If I buy a 256MB SD Card, can I use it to as a place to install and run programs, or am I limited to using it for data storage only? Can it be recognized as MAIN MEMORY instead of simply a "storage card"?
Otherwise, what are my options to increase memory/storage?
Also, COSTCO has the 256MB SD Card available for $104 CDN (plus 7%GST and 8%PST), is that a good deal or should I look elsewhere?
Many thanks!

Yes you can install and run programs from the SD card!
No the SD card will only be recognized as a Storage card!
Your other option is to send your unit in for a memory upgrade.

Thanks for you reply Qman, it is really appreciated! Can you offer me some more detail though?

Do I need to do anything differently when installing new pocket pc applications so that they are installed on the SD card?
Does the SX56 automatically add the new available memory to its configuration and then manage space for file storage and/or memory usage? Can I choose one or the other for storage of data files and/or applications?
Is there any difference between "Main" memory and "Storage Card" memory??? I initially thought there was a difference that needed to be considered, but now I'm not so sure. I kinda likened Main Memory to the RAM on a PC and the Storage Card to a mini "hard drive" ...which lead me to think that the Storage Card was used ONLY for the storage of data files. I guess I was wrong in my thinking?

the price you mentioned, in my opinion, is not a good deal. i was in hong kong and i was able to buy a 512 mb sd card for $114. you may need to search around sites for a more lucrative package.

it is not true, that the SD-Card can be used to run programs. You can use the SD Card for your data and install programs to the sd Card. When you're running a program the internal memory of your pda will be used.
So you can install much more and bigger programs at your device, but the memory for running programms won't be changed. You see, SD Card is a little bit like a Hard Disc in your pc. You can install more programs and save more data, but you're still limited in the maximum amount of running programs.
You can install programs to your SD-Card via Active Sync. Normally youßre asked, if you want to install the software in the main memory. If you select no, you can choose between main memory and SD-Card.

also the sd flash is a lot slower then internal ram
much like a harddisk is slower then ram in a computer
so if you could merge the sdram with the internal ram and access it as one pool it would be troublesome because the interal ram had to slow down to match the sdram or
you would need some asyncron access plan which would be pretty complex since you could be reading some data which were 1/2 on the slow sdram and 1/2 on the much faster internal ram
ok, and on reverse ...
have you come across any software that can not be installed on SD card and can not be run from SD card ??
regards,
monika
Yes there are some programs that won't run from the SD card. I can't remember which ones I've run across though. I almost always try to install on th esd card first. If the app won't run then I put it in main memory. Good luck - Jim
thanks for your response - good idea ....
try to install software on SD card first

SD Card Deals
Guys,
Check this site out www.e-xcessories.com , They have really got great Memory Cards Deals, specially SD Cards.
I got my 1GB Sandisk today, very happy. Loaded loads of Mp3 and having fun.
Hello all..... just a quick one..... I have a HD2, and have recently found that I cannot transfer files onto the SD card without running the chance of them not actually showing up. Sometime they do, sometimes they don't.
By the above I mean, if I transfer a music folder across which contains a dozen or so mp3..... the transfer appears to happen okay.... the green progress bar on the laptop takes the expected length of time and the folder appears in the directory of the HD2.... HOWEVER.... when I open this folder, the MP3s are not there????
I have had this with some other files (usually larger).... they appear to transfer across without problem, but once I disconnect the HD2's data lead and search through the storage card - nothing there!
I have a HD2, running WM 6.5 on thre latest Vodafone rom, and using an unbranded 32gb sd card.
Any help... VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
I suggest you make a complete back up copy of all the contents of your SD card. hben reformat your SD card using the Fat 32 option. Also I suggest you take your SD card out of your HD2 and put it into a SD card reader and use it to reformat your SD card. All you have to do is find the SD card on your computer by going to My Coputer, it will be listed as a mass storage device or a removable drive. Right click it and select format and use option Fat 32.

First, I would try the re-formatting as discussed in the last post. However, did you try transferring via ActiveSync (assuming you were using the USB drive option)? There are two ways to transfer files on the HD2.
Are those files, by any chance, set to hidden?
If your sd card is an unbranded 32GB one bought from ebay it's most probably a fake...This behaviour is exactly what happens if the fake sd card is 2 or 4GB fooling you to think that it's 32GB one. Any file you transfer that exeeds the real storage capacity of the fake sd card will be lost.

That makes sense.... it was from ebay, and would account for the corruptions and problems which have occured since I swapped it for my 8gb.
I wonder if I have any recourse through eBay?
I've went back to my old 8gb card and everything working fine now.... duff card - confirmed....!
Hello all,
I'm new here and have a couple of questions about my first smartphone the Galaxy SII (Rooted)
I have recently been getting a few messages informing me that the SD Card is full, which seems to hold about 12 GB.
I have a 32 GB External Sd Card which I try to keep most of my vids / music, and apps that I consider don't really need to e on the actual phone like games, etc.
Other apps like browsers, Password safes, etc I keep on the phone itself.
The Phone seems to have 3 storage areas that it seems to refer to
USB Storage (Actually part of phone memory= Correct ?
SD Card (Actually part of phone memory = Correct?
External SD Card (Removable sd card = Correct ?
Can somebody please explain to me what the idea behind this setup is and how do I go about freeing up the SD Card when most of the directories in there seem to be Data related with the odd folder left over from uninstalled apps.
Hope that makes sense.
Apologies for any bad / incorrect terminology.
Regards
Loachy
If you go to Settings->storage ;
SD Card would refer to any external microSD card you might have put in.
USB Storage would refer to the Internal storage (can be used for storing media/data files)
there is another storage of about 2GB or so... which is used for apps installations..
this partitions can only be accessed via few apps like root explorer and others...
In order to free up your App storing internal storage ( which is 2GB odd)... you would need to put in an external microSD card...
then use any App (i use titanium Backup Pro) to move some of the apps to SD card...(which is infact the external microSD card)
Hi, so I recently bought a MICRO SD card (16gb) for my Samsung Galaxy S Duos S7652.
I inserted it in the phone. When I go to the storage in the settings, it shows that there is 14.83gb available even though it is empty I haven't put anything inside. But this is not the major problem.
The problem is that the card is USELESS. I mean whatever I do, I cannot get applications in the SD card. They always install in the internal memory where there is no space left and the game is like 1.5gb which is more than the internal memory I am given. I tried moving the applications to the SD card folders in ''my files'' but nothing hapenned.
I searched the internet and found out that I had to change my internet browser settings and so did I. I put the memory card as deafult. I downloaded Directory Bind and App to SD and still i cannot transfer applications from internal to external memory, or just download directly in the memory card. The memory card is working correctly, i just dont know how to place apps in there.
In my settings--> storage, when i go to an application and tap on it, i can see the SD card under storage, but there is no ''MOVE TO SD CARD'' in any application. I have tried with the App to SD and the Directory Bind programs but i still get Root Access FAIL. My phone operater is 4.0 ice cream sandwich (i think that is how it's called)
I have tried everything. So my question is:
Can I fix this and transfer applications from internal to external memory? Or download the apps directly on the SD card?
Or i just wasted 20EURO and the card is useless.
Please Help.
Thanks.
I am new to the chrome OS,. I just got a asus flip. Overall I love it. I am looking for a dual pane file manager that will read and write to internal memory as well as the micro SD slot and any USB drives that may be attached. Any ideas?

Wellll, if you run chrome OS 53 on the asus flip, then you may be able to install/run "total commander" for android; it's free; can be set to dual pane in 'landscape"; & does write to micro SD but don't know about USB drives........

It does the same thing as xplorer or ghost file manager. It shows the internal memory but not the microSD card. Actually shows the internal memory multiple times. ChromeOS's file manager works but I have to cut N paste to move or copy files

On my Samsung Tab Pro, when I run total commander, I see "SD-card" which is internal memory; next line item is "USB", then "User-defined-location". "USB" IS the external sd-card; check the path shown which is /storage/(hex code?) & that is what shows up as the external sd card on my tablets.
I had played with the user-defined-location which, on the Tab Pro, which has something like SD-card,USB & when selected pops up to show both internal storage & sdcard1 to select which one I want to have it set(?).
So I'm not sure what you mean as internal memory shows up multiple times.
I have to wait until maybe late Sept to have my Samsung Chromebook 3 installed with the OS 53. I will be installing TC & some other stuff, but until then.......

it shows SD card, SD card (2), SD card (3), SD card (4) all are symbolic links to the same spot. The microSD is nowhere to be found.

I just open two instances of the stock file manager and place them side-by-side on the screen. I can drag-and-drop between them with no problem. All drives are accessible on the ChromeOS side. At this point (Sept 3), the Android side is something of a "walled garden". Some Android apps (e.g., VLC) can read from the SD card, but I'm not aware of any that can *write* to anything but internal memory.
I must be doing something wrong because when I try to open another instance it just pops the same instance to the top.

I have the shortcut pinned to the shelf. Click once to open the first instance, then two-finger click and select "new window" from the pop-up menu to launch the second.
