Greetings all,
I'm having the following issue with a Qtek 1020 I just purchased from Microdirect, sold as SIM unlocked. The phone just doesn't find the network when I turn it on with my Pay As You Go T-mobile SIM. No error message pops up, nothing asks me for an unlock code etc, I just get the message 'No Service' under Connectivity when I select the aerial icon at the top of the screen. When I go to Phone Settings I can see listed under 'other networks' O2 and Vodafone, but no T-mobile. I've tried changing GSM bands in the bootloader and listing networks but to no avail (I switched through 900, 1900 and 900/1800). I have also tried the unlocking tools around this site with no success. I know the SIM works as it asks for my PIN when I switch on and I can also browse through contacts stored on it. I'm wondering if anyone here has any ideas as I'm all out.
Information about my Qtek:
Qtek 1020
ROM version: 4.02.04 ENG
ROM date: 8/24/05
Radio version: A.33.02
Protocol version: 1.3.3
Model No: PW10B1
Please don't let me pull any more hair out :x
Thanks and warm regards,
Neil.

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know you're not alone! I too bought the 1020 from Microdirect and have the same problem. I've tried my t-mobile pay as you go SIM in an i-mate pda2k and it worked straight away. That made me think the 1020 was restricted to o2/vodafone. If its an unlocked PDA why do Microdirect say it won't work with Orange? Where I work we successfully unlocked an XDA and used an Orange SIM, but that was a couple of years ago.
I've e-mailed qtek but have had no response yet.
I've tried the xda developers ROM and while it is cool I still get the problem with the t-mobile SIM, although it says No Signal as opposed to No Service. I was going to try the GSM modes on the bootloader but notice you've tried that already so I won't bother.
If I get any further I'll post back asap.
Mark
Thanks for your reply Mark and now I can rest knowing I'm not the only one having trouble! I too tried the developer's ROM with no luck, although it was nice to play with the extra applications. Funny how Microdirect stated that it was compatable with T-Mobile, when it seems that it is not. I tried my sister's T-Mobile contract SIM and it doesn't work either, but my mum's Vodafone SIM works fine as well as my dad's Pay As You Go Vodafone SIM. It seems like this device is locked out of T-Mobile.
Regards,
Neil.
News from Microdirect
Microdirect have backtracked on the unlocked claim.
See link below for their comments.
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=11864&GroupID=1162
Oh well!
Yep I saw that. I decided to keep the PDA because it was such a good deal and I'm trying to go for a cheap contract with Vodafone. Check out http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/phonenetwork-84-1-Nokia_1100_on_Vodafone.html - £8 per month for the first 6 months then £16 afterwards. You get 1000 off-peak minutes per month to landlines and other Vodafone users as well as 250 TXTs plus £110 cash back after 6 months!! Sounds like a bargain to me, let's hope I pass the credit check!
Neil.
I was about to ask the very same question myself. I'm somewhat annoyed that Microdirect never even bothered to apologise or correct the mistake directly when I presented this problem to them last week - their response was to simply "return the item". For a Pocket PC PDA though, it's nice and cheap so like others, I'll keep mine and buy the cheapest possible Vodafone PAYG system that I can.
Well my Vodafone contract was approved and I immediately put the SIM into my Qtek 1020 whilst leaving the bundled Nokia phone unopened. All is well, I set up GPRS etc and my handy new PDA just got handier. Now I can sell this Nokia 1101 phone as it's SIM unlocked... might get 20 quid for it or something!
Regards,
Neil.
Okay well here's another damn issue with this thing... After a couple of weeks happy usage, the SD card slot decides to spit out anything I put into it - it just won't hold a card no matter what. I didn't force the mechanism at all or insert a card too forcefully - it just popped out one day and wouldn't go back in. I've written to Microdirect requesting an RMA, they replied thinking I was requesting an RMA for an SD card so I had to correct them and let them know it's actually the card slot in the 1020 that seems to have developed a fault of some kind. Just wondering if anyone else has ever had an issue with the card slot on their wallaby, so maybe we can say they are notoriously weak or something, or perhaps I was just unlucky.
Regards,
Neil.
Update: My replacement 1020 arrived today and all is well, well done to MicroDirect.
Rgds,
Neil.
Brand new Ameo, when I put the SIM in it wont work. The phone doesnt recognise it.
Now is a T-Mobile SIM and a T-Mobile Phone, apart from the Network lock is there any kind of SIM lock that would stop other T-Mobile sims working in the phone?
Has anybody else had this problem?
Sounds to me like a SIM lock, is it t-mobile sim?
When I first got it, I did put the sim card in the wrong way up! Check the manual to make sure u've put it in correctly. The door closes and everything even if u've put it in wrong, and I initially got the same problem.
one of my tmob sims wouldnt work in my ameo but my other one does.
same message missing or invalid. call customer support (08454125000) and describe the issue to get a replacement sim sent out. If u bought it in a store you should be able to get it done in the store.
cheers
Its definately a T-Mobile Sim and Phone, Wouldnt a SIM lock give some kind of locked message?
It was in the way it showed on the instructions. The little sticker on the plastic showed where the notch in the corner goes, and I made sure it fitted with no pressure or forcing. Due to the notch, and the plastic on the cover im sure it wouldnt fit any other way.
I went into a T-Mob store and the guy there tried his SIM, which he assured me had actualy been used in a Demo AMEO in that store, and that SIM wouldnt work either.
When I called they said it wouldnt be the SIM as that worked in other phones (inlcuding a m600i also bought on w&w tarif).
I have T-Mob supposedly replacing the phone this morning (Courier didnt turn up yesterday) so Ill update if there are problems with the new Phone.
UPDATE-
New phone works fine, just worked with no trouble. Was definately a faulty sim reader in the other phone.
Glad u've eventually sorted it!
I guess it has to do something with the nistallation of extended ROM..mine also didn't read, when I soft reset to avoid Ext ROM..when allowed installation..it detected
It seems like invalid SIM issue is quite common among Athena. My was plaqing with the same issue as well and just got my replacement unit from Dopod. By the way my is U1000.
"NO RADIO" or "NO GSM" GSM/3G module failure T-Mobile Ameo original ROM for warranty?
****** A note for those who may be in a similar situation or pondering over something similar ****
How it ended is that HTC refused to honour the warranty for the reason of "nonstandard software installed / user inflicted damage". To be perfectly honest the law is on their side on this one unfortunately.
I was charged for the repair, waiting for the unit now. :/
Conclusion - as was easy to predict is that HTC will try to use the argument of different branding to refuse warranty, so if you're using HTC branded ROM on T-Mobile branded unit - the warranty goes.
Nothing new here, just for others to have a track.
Also, for those experiencing following problems:
- No GSM, No 3G, but at the same time WiFi and GPS working
- At the boot "NO GSM", "NO RADIO" or "R NONE" displayed instead of the radio stack version, the message depends on the radio stack version
... your motherboard is 99% damaged.
It's not repairable apparently (relax, the unit is). I was charged for "M/B repair", but when the unit came back the motherboard was obviously replaced - new IMEI, physical marks gone. Compared to the price of the whole unit the repair is not that much, so don't despair, send it to them. They're very fast.
The fault is apparently rather rare, but not unknown. May be caused by misuse like leaving the power source plugged in when removing the battery or simply a manufacturing fault. If you have standard software, you will have the repair under the warranty.
Mine just died in the middle of the call for no apparent reason and as I had Olipro's SPL and other non-standard ROM on it I was charged for the repair.
The unit is back, like new, I'm happy again and hope it won't happen to any of you.

Hi all.
First of all, thx for all the effort that you've put into making Athena/Ameo work with WM6 and all those tools.
Now, I need an original T-Mobile UK Ameo ROM. I have searched hi and low on FTP, wiki, but I cannot find an original T-Mobile UK ROM, only HTC (different branding, etc)
The situation is such - my Ameo was bought second hand from E-bay. It already had a WM6 put on it by a very nice and helpful seller.
After some time of using it, the phone module got fried somehow. After the soft reset due to a hang in a phone call the device doesn't see the phone anymore.
GPS works, WIFI works but no phone, when booting it shows "R NONE" like there's no radio.
I've tried re-flashing with two different radio ROM's, then a full WM6 re-flash, all to no avail.
I have a feeling it's a fried SIM reader, before going completely it complained once about "incorrect SIM" or something similar. The SIM is ok of course, I've checked it in other mobiles and also other sims in the Ameo with the same result.
I've seen similar posts on the net, but to claim warranty I will have to revert back to WM5 or of course they will try to claim that the phone module got fried by WM6, wich is balls (excuse my Latin).
So... after this lengthy introduction - does ANYONE have a backup copy of T-Mobile UK original ROM?
PLEASE?
Jack

And you're sure it's a hardware problem and not a band issue with the phone? I know when I first got my phone I had to change the band to make it work with T-Mobile.

Yes, 100%.
1. It did work for 3 days with some heavy usage (phone calls, 3G for browsing for 3 hours straight for a test, GPS driving across country roads for 4 hours, boy that was fun).
2. Before it stopped working it complained about a problem with SIM. SIM is ok, other SIMs don't work either.
3. After a soft reset and all following hard resets, radio rom updates, full re-flashing still at the black screen there is that "R NONE" message. Google'ing around I've found three similar reports about Athena/U1000 and all three end up with "had to take the handset to the warranty repair, got a new one back"...
4. And finally - I left it switched off for the night with 50% battery still there at 1am. At 7:30am when switched on it had 10%. There seems to be some power drain, that makes me think something is hardware-fried.
I am really cautious about approaching T-Mobile warranty with WM6 and Olipro 1.20 SPL onboard, I can almost hear the answer and I don't like it.
Thx.

Hi, thx for your answer, I've looked there, but there's no T-Mobile UK ROM there, only HTC.
Does anyone have an original backup ROM for T-Mobile UK?
Also - how can I make sure the Hard-SPL by Olipro is gone and all is left is Ameo as it left the factory? Is there something I have to be aware of (to take it off)?
If those questions are stupid I appologise, but I don't have much experience with Athena, I only had it for 4 days. :/
So far I was always working with ipaq's and Imate Jam. Never had to deal with warranty on those.
Thx once again.
Jack

Hey, that would be great. Can you upload them here? Or simply mail to [email protected]
Do you still have original WM5 on your device too by any chance?
What problems do you have with your GPS? Maybe I can help?
If your unit is bought on E-bay, you still should have the manufacturers warranty, check that on http://service.htceurope.com/Wizard.aspx
At that link you can quickly check if your unit is still covered, it should be, Ameos are not long enough on the market to expire their warranty.
Thx in advance
Jack
Thanks man for the info, here is the NBH file i've crearted using the HTC tool (attached), Note that your device should be SUPERCID to be able to flash the rom with this image.
My gps isn't working under wm6, tried wm5 but still didn't work, it stops when i try to flash the SIRFBootloader.nb (GPS) with an error code 00018003, i only get that error when i use the miniSD for flashing, as the normal activesync flashing doesn't show the errors as well as the miniSD one. i've tried every single rom in the forum, all fails .. asked for help but non had that problem, some don't know that some roms don't include that SIRFbootloader.nbh and only have the OS,splashes are the radio.

Cheerz mate, I will try to combine this branding with HTC WM5 and see how it looks... still I'm hoping somebody will come up with full original image.
Somehow I can't believe nobody backed it up before doing upgrades. In the olden days when I was playing with Linux on iPaq's, how else could we come back? (Ohhh... the warm fuzzy feeling of a text console on the black screen on my iPaq... and nothing more. That was year 2000. )
Sounds like some real trouble you're having there with GPS... I'm afraid it's completely out of my league, maybe somebody else will have some advise.

Original Ameo ROM
Hi,
having bricked one Ameo trying to unlock it I have a replacement from T-Mobile UK. I am a noobie so I have no idea how to make an image of what you need, but if you post instructions and there is no danger of another bricked unit I'd be happy to upload it for you
Hard-SPL is permanent
Just thought I'd let you guys know that Olipro's Hard-SPL and signature on the bootloader-screen is permanent. Sorry, but that is what made it unbrickable too.
I don't think it is permanent, I no longer have his spl appearing on the boot screen. I presume it was during the last rom flash, (but I've been to sleep since then so may have forgotten what I did), but it now shows as 2.20. before it was the olipro one..

Oh sweet... :/
Thx for clearing this up.
Did anyone have experience trying to claim warranty from HTC on the T-Mobile unit with WM6 on it? After all it's HTC's own soft, but the legal standing is that voids the warranty, so they can use it to refuse repair.
Damn it, it seems the GSM module is not repairable, all reports say about replacing the whole unit. :/
I saw some reports here about T-Mobile UK releasing WM6 official upgrade in September, I think I'll just wait until then, the soft will be official even if the SPL won't.
Will keep you all posted here about the development of all that in case some other poor sod finds himself in a similar pickle.
Damn. :/

Thx for your offer, it's really nice to find help when you need it.
Although I think I'm giving up.
I'm at the mercy of HTC Europe service anyway. In that situation I'd rather approach them honest with WM6 and the unit as it is, as it is clearly a hardware fault, if they're sensible I have half a chance there.
I need the unit badly as a GPS now anyway, so I have to wait and there's a chance T-Mob UK will release WM6. Then the situation looks even better again.
But as I cannot apparently remove Olipro's SPL, the unit shows clear signs of tampering. If I were them, I must say I would be much less understanding seeing a modified unit which then somebody tried to conceal and did it badly on top of it leaving the SPL cracked.
Or... if that's hardware problem and there's a power drain there's that outside chance the whole motherboard will go and the ROM version is not a problem anymore I guess.
I find it all a bit crazy though, I hate those legal catch 22 cases. ROM by the manufacturer, but warranty void on a 400 quid unit because of branding (warranty would be ok if I used the HTC WM6 straight on the HTC branded unit instead of Ameo).
Ok, sorry for flooding, it's just that the frustration is killing me. :/

I think you're referring to ROM version.
SPL original would be 1.00 I think and Olipro's I have now is 1.20

Hey everyone, what's up?
Recently I sold mt ATT 8525 to a buddy. He is currently with T-Mobile and the phone needed to be unlocked. I used this unlock process --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
I followed the instructions for Vista and using the micro sd card. Once it was finished, I slipped in his T-Mobile sim and turned on the phone. It asked me to enter an unlock code still, so I entered in some random numbers and it worked. The phone stayed unlocked and worked on his T-Mobile network for about a week and a half. Then it just locked itself all over again. I'm no longer able to try and unlock it for him again because I am out of town for the next 3 months and he isn't too computer savvy.
Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what did you do to fix it?
Also, if an unlock code is entered too many times, will the phone be locked with the original provider (att) for good? We have tried entering the code a total of 4 times (including the time that it worked) I told him not to try entering anymore codes until I can figure this out.
Thanks for any help I may recieve!

Do you still have AT&T for your phone company? AT&T will give you the sim unlock code for the phone after you've owned it for 2 months (provided it's one of their phones and you still have their service). You just have to call them and tell them you are going over seas and need to use a foriegn sim while traveling. I did this with no problem - the only thing is it takes about a week for them to get you the code (they said they'd email it to me - I actually had to call back after a week and ask for it but they gave it to me.)
well, i purchased the phone on ebay..
Not sure what to say - I'd still probably try calling AT&T (assuming it's an AT&T branded phone and you are a customer of theirs still) it's worth a shot. Beyond that I don't know what to say since I haven't used the sim-unlock tool you spoke of.
well, I appreciate your help. I'll give them a call tomorrow. If they BS with me or whatever, then I think I'll just spring for an ebay sim unlock that's only about 15 bucks.
Hello all.
This is my first post on this forum so forgive me for being a noob! I have searched this forum and the web, but couldn't find help for my prediciment so, here goes.
I've got an O2 3G SIM. I originally got the SIM & contract with an ORBIT2. I lost the bloody ORBIT2! No insurance
So I bought a standard T-Mobile AMEO from a geezer on ebay. Happy Days!
I had the IMEI unlocked
I ran AthenaUnlocker.exe and followed the instructions for this
I downloaded AP DUAL 3.0 ROM with add-ins
I followed the instructions to upgrade the ROM
I got O2 to unlock my SIM
All was good when I rebooted. The screen looked good, I had all 4 bars of GSM connectivity showing, and I had a G next to it. I ran the O2 software to configure the device and rebooted.
It all went tits up when I tried to make a call. Nothing, no error or anything, just wouldn't ring.
Then I tried to connect to internet and got error message;
"Answering modem disconnected" then notification;
"Problem connecting to GPRS network"
1. Is this me putting in the wrong settings?
2. Is the AMEO just incompatible with anything other than T-Mobile?
3. Is my O2 SIM not behaving?
4. Am I obsessed with numbered lists?
Hope someone can help! Any advice would be much appreciated
Not sure what you mean...
1. I had the IMEI unlocked -IMEIs are not locked - they can be blocked if the device has been stolen but then they can't be unblocked - what do you mean? How did you do this?
5. I got O2 to unlock my SIM - as per 1 above, a SIM can't be locked - what do you mean?
Did you try the SIM bedor upgrading the ROM? It should have worked as T-Mobile don't lock their phones.
Does the SI< work in any other phone?
Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I don't know the correct terminology. I've got to admit I know next to nothing about phones!
1. I got the SIM and the phone at the same time. When I put the SIM in the phone it said SimLock and had a code window to enter a code. I thought this was the SIM code, so entered this, but it kept saying 'wrong code'. I then searched the internet and found www.deblocage-htc.com. I gave them my IMEI number, they sent me the code that opened the phone up.
5. O2 sent me the SIM as a replacement for my lost SIM. They put a lock on the SIM when I reported it lost.
I wasn't aware that T-Mobile didn't lock the phone! I wouldn't have bothered to change the ROM. The ROM does look good though, so I'd be happy to keep it, if I could get it to work.
I didn't try it before I installed the AP DUAL 3.0 ROM. Wish I had now. Do you think the ROM is to blame? I've search the web for a couple of days now and not found a similar case.
I'm gonna get my wifes old orange phone unlocked to try the SIM in that.
If it said SimLock then it was locked - you didn't pay to unlock it though, did you? It sounds like a problem with the unlocker.
download the unlocker from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315831 and run all three steps and let us know if it works.
Then demand your money back from the idiots you paid...
So are you saying that i've probably bought a stolen phone? I haven't bought a stolen phone, I've got evidence to support this. I know the email address of the guy on ebay. he's had the account for a few years, paypal account etc. Although it was simlocked I could still see the files on the phone. The guy had left his CV on there with his email address etc. So it was his phone.
Anyway, yes I did pay to unlock it. Was that stupid? I used the unlocking software after I unsimlocked it!
I've got it working now anyway, it was O2 that hadn't lifted the bar on the sim.
