Hello All,
my provider (3 Australia) installs quite a few xml files during an install after a hard reset.
when i use another ROM, other than the original one, MMS doesnt work and i am led to believe that without these xml files, the MMS wont work at all. ive manually put in all the settings but still nothing.
So, how can u install the .xml files??? if i have to i can link to a zip file containing them all.
Thanks,
Drooch

I'm using Daneshm90's (very awesome) APK Manager to mess around with my framework-res.apk file. I've sucessfully reskinned some pngs and changed some xml files and stuff like that.
Why does the following cause a bootloop?
1) Decompile Framework-res.apk
2) Make a copy of res\drawable\btn_default_small.xml and rename it btn_default_small2.xml
3) Change the background of something to android:background="[a]drawable/btn_default_small2"
4) Compile\flash to phone etc, watch it bootloop
(please note: [a] is really the email 'at' symbol, the forums get mad at me for using it)
I can edit existing files just fine, but whenever I try to add and use a new file everything grinds to a halt, even if its just a copy of a working 'stock' file. What am I missing? Is there a list of files somewhere I need to add my new xml file to? Should I be building from source instead of using apk manager?
Hi all,
I'm creating a custom ROM series (for Android devices with 850/1900/2100mHz network frequencies, i.e, AT&T, Telus, Rogers and Telstra phones) and I need to know how to change the default APNs to the correct Telstra ones. Does anyone know how to do this?
Most devices have the option to add multiple apns for each device. Im not sure how to add default apns in the rom so the end user doesnt have to change them.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
the most reliable way would be to pull the apns.xml file out of framework and replace/repack for each.
the apns.xml file is located in the framework-res.apk file, in the xml folder.
some will say that the apns-conf.xml file is needed to be replaced (think that's even how CM does it)... but i find that to not always work well.
replacing the actual file within framework, i've had 100% success on all ROMs, ports, etc... with MMS working perfectly
i can't speak for the Telstra in certainty... but if someone has a "stock" Telstra ROM, kang that framework and have at it!
hope this helps!

I looked everywhere tried every program from APK Edit, APK Tool, APK Manager, Eclipse and a few others, I cannot figure out how to edit the Strings.xml in APK files.
APK Edit and APK Tool / APK Manager just gives me issues when i try to edit the strings, when i finally get them changed over and push to the phone it doesn't install the .apk, tried this on two different devices with no change.
I'm making theme files but i require to edit the strings value so the names are different, and i'm using an OEM file as my base file.
When I edit the .apk with my themed graphics and go to install it, it always wants to overwrite the original, but i've found that others have been able to just rename the strings value to another name so it wouldn't replace it.
What i'm trying to do is not replace original skins in HTC sense 2.x. Since there installable they can be installed multiple times if there values are changed in strings.xml, allowing for massive customization options.
I need the developers community to show me how to do this, i've tried on my own and i've failed each time, and i also tried contacting the themers that have done this on there own but they refuse to help me.
I have a bunch of skins i'm working on but i can't render my skins and theme the apk files until i can do this
You guys are my last bit of help i can find.
hi..
ive tried the Eracter rom today, but it didnt work on my phone, so i went back to Pimms Experience rom. but i wanted the battery status and signals status from Eracter status bar. So i extracted systemui.apk from Eracter, copied all the files from \res\drawable-hdpi and into the Experience systemui.apk via Virtuous Ten Studio. compiled a new systemUI.apk. that all went good.
but now the question. how do i get this new systemUI.apk installed on my phone? i cant overwrite it on the phone because it is a running app. cant force to stop the app, phone wont stop it even if i say it should. so i tried thru CWM and found a lot of empty flashable zips, this dont work either, i am getting an error 0 when flashing the zip. installation aborted. i tried to make a zip with xdaAutoTool, but also this zip file failes.
I then found a font installer zip, erased whats inside the zip and made system\app\systemUI.apk and this one installed and phone startet up with updating apps. but it didnt change anything at the stausbar.
so how can i install my systemUI.apk???? i am on Acro s 6.1.a.2.5.0 lt26w
and still have to say, customizing iphone is way easier sorry guys.
please help
I did the opposite of this, I used Pims' SystemUI.apk in the Eracter ROM.
You can find here how to create a zip file to flash it via CWM.
Only thing you have to do is to put your SystemUI.apk to the blank zip file.
/system/app/SystemUI.apk

So there is this PinyinMe keyboard which looks the most like an iphone keyboard which I like as my phone is an iPhone Replica.
1. So the things I want to do is change the APK to a normal APK but I only know the way by TitaniumBackup but this app aint installed so it doesnt work.
2. The next thing I want to do is edit the APK xml files so I can remove all the chinese signs in it and change it to normal letters (mainly english).
- I already tried this but the APK wont install
3. If this is all working, I would like to make a second version of it which has AZERTY keyboard instead of QWERTY.
Please, I would really apreciate it and others too.

You have two files in the zip. One is an .apk and the other is an .odex file.
I saw this thread as I was browsing around and came across your GooApple thread.
I am not sure what your level of expertise is, but basically, an apk from a manufacturer comes in two parts (.apk and .odex). If you want to edit the app, you must either edit both the .apk and .odex files, or you can 'deodex' the file which basically takes the contents of the .odex file and places it inside the .apk file.
If you have deodexed an apk file (removed the need for the .odex), you no longer need the .odex file. In this way, you get 'deodexed' ROMs with no .odex files inside. These are much easier to edit and work with.
There are lots of tutorials to find out more about this and about deodexing and editing .apk files if you search.
Here is a good starting point
If you are already aware of this, I apologise

Hey man, thanks for giving me this information.
I did read about deodexing but havent had the time to look it up. And I think TBP does the deodex (I could be wrong) when changing the system app to a user app.
Anyways, I have been able to edit the xml & png's, but whenever I try to install the newly created APK, I get the error : App not installed.
Maybe this deodexing can do the trick, I'll test it out once I find 30min of free time ^^
Titanium backup doesn't deodex the .apk. That is why you are having the issue. You can swap pngs etc without decompiling, but to edit smali and some xmls etc you have to decompile... it is much easier if you have first deodexed your apk to remove the .odex file.

I did recompile a working APK, but when I put it all back together and try as a system/normal app and do zipalign or no zipalign, I always get an error or just a crash. But probably deodexing will do the trick.
Hopefully I'll get some time this week for doing it cause its like:
