Hi, I first want to start by saying I have read through the entire Hermes wiki and have followed the website for about the past year, through my 8125 and now on to my 8525. Thus, I have done the necessary research but now just have a couple of questions that are best answered by the community. I apologize if I did not find a thread out there that answered this particular question, but I assure you that I tried to look for one. ANYWAY....
A couple of weeks ago my father purchased a HTC TyTN in France, I suppose, from my recommendations for my 8525. He is originally from overseas, grew up there, and has fluently spoken French his entire life, but English is the language with which he is comfortable as far as computers and phones go. Although he loves the phone, his one problem is the fact that everything is in French. He says that he can sort of navigate around but claims that most of the translation is not great, and, in addition, it is hard for me to help him out when things are called different things between our two phones.
Basically, my question is what do I have to do to make his phone in English? I am assuming that his phone is the HTC TyTN and, from looking on the ROM upgrading page, that his ROM is currently the "1.18.256.2 FRA." I know that I will have to upgrade his ROM, but which is the best, most stable one that I should upgrade his phone to? Or, is there officially released ROM's that HTC releases for TyTN users who buy their phone overseas but would prefer an operating system in English, or another language?
Again, I am sure someone will say "Read the wiki before you post something like this," but it is my father's phone (which he paid $600 for there!!) and I want to be sure I know what I am doing when I do it, rather than the way I can just play around with my 8525.
I thank everyone in advance for reading my post and for any help that anyone can provide; a mere recommendation of a ROM to any helpful suggestions would be more than appreciated! Thank you so much again, and thanks to everyone who keeps this place such a valuable community for those seeking help and, of course, those eternally seeking ways to make their phones cooler than that of the person's next to them!
Sincerely,
Brandon
Without going into a discussion on which ROM is "better" and what criteria should be used the decide the "betterness" of a particular ROM, the easiest option is to install the WWE edition of the same ROM version you have installed already.
You will need to either make the phone SuperCID, or better, use the new SSPL method.

Hi,
I'm the proud owner of a T-Mobile MDA II with vga camera. Half an hour ago I happend to find this interesting forum.
What is this Windows Mobile 2005? I've never heard of it. I searched the Microsoft website, but I didn't find anything.
I have no idea which OS is installed on my MDA... the ROM version is 1.72.01GER (in case that helps).
So... in case I want to upgrade my MDA.... what do I have to do, where do I get the files from etc. And, what is this upgrade all about? Is it a totally new OS, or what is it? I have no idea
Thanks for your help
Bye

Hi Bauer,
I too am a newbee. Just joined this forum about a month ago. If I may give you a clue ( though I'm not an expert in it), the Windows Mobile 2005 is supposed to be the next mobile phone OS from Microsoft. It is said to have many more user-friendly features than the one you are currently using. However it has not yet been officialy released in the market (I even doubt if its ready yet). But thanks to our great Buzz Lightyear (http://buzzdev.net) we are fortunate to get the taste of the new promised features. Buzz had managed to create his own version of the said OS and named it the Magneto. Why don't you try to drill further into other area of this forum or go to http://buzzdev.net. I'm sure you'll get the idea, and as it happened to me I'm sure you'll like it too. Good Luck.
Hi again Bauer,
Regarding the question as to where to get ROM upgrade, you can try this link http://www.buzzdev.net/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=124&Itemid=32 to get the copy of the new ROM upgrade. However you are supposed to register yourself first to be able to access the link. There (and in this forum too) you will get a clear description & instruction for the ROM upgrade.
I would also like to get this opportunity to apologize to the forum (especially to Buzz and the development team) for not being polite enough to say 'thank you' for all the work you've done. I've had no significant problem with either the upgrading process or the tweaking around with both hardware and software (incl. 3rd parties). Everything works fine with my machine since day one I did the upgrade. I love the work. Thank you all, and have a nice day.
Hi Bauer,
Spend time reading the wiki site too which will provide you with a lot of background about your new toy and the sort of things you can tweak/ develop or pick up that others have done.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
Also learn to use the search function of this website as you can find most of the answers for yourself without relying upon good folk to give the same advice to the next newbee in the queue asking the same questions ('nuff said, we've all been newbees at sometime).
Once you've read relevant parts of the wiki and are comfortable that you want to risk changing your ROM (there are numerous pitfalls you risk (e.g. warrantee invalidation) and ultimately totally killing your machine if you have two left feet/ power surge/ massive bad luck etc) search these forums will educate you to the experiences of others developing/ beta testing/ exploring. Buzz's versions of WM5 are narrated a:

Remember to pay due homage to all his hard work.
Beyond that enjoy.

Total newb question, but I just got an 8525 and I see all this stuff about "modifying" it. I'm just wondering what is the gain and should I be doing it. I really dont know that much about these types of phones as my only cell service for the last few years has been company provided. Now I gotten my own service contract and selected this phone. It appears that there is a whole lot more available. Similar to when I discoverd "modifying" my TIVO. I was looking into unlockin it so I can use european ISM cards in it, when I travel (I'm in the US), thats how I found all this stuff.
I read some of the stuff in the sticky, but its all greek (for now anyway). Can someone just give me a down and dirty on pros and cons ?
Thanks

Welcome
But the Forum Rules here are that you have to read the Wiki before posting.
I'm suprised the sytem didn't prevent you from posting.
The benifits are stability, speed, and memory.
The cons are a $500 brick.
Hi Gurus
Is it safer to apply HardSPL first then SIM unlock or the other way round.
Maybe it doesnt matter.
Whats your view ?
Asif
I did sim unlock first. then I apply hardspl. now flashing different roms. don't know exactly how the process suppose to be but that's what I did and my phone is working like a champ
I did hard spl, then Sim unlocked, not sure if it matters. I had the same query when I unlocked, but wondered if I missed something in the WIKI, so didn't ask due to a good flaming (if you aint done your research you can get crusified in here). Your braver than me lol
@AsifM3100: U need to do the CID/SIM update first; it will load it's own spl and radio. When U have completed the process, then U should install the hardspl before flashing your own radio and or rom.

You post made me laugh. However I have made the same observation but couldnt find the answer in the wiki or other posts. Its one of the reasons why I have put off unlocking and flashing for such a long time. So many people who you feel sorry for, cos they have bricked their phones and who are panicking, just get told to do the research. When you are in that state the last thing you need is research. Its such a contrast to the SAP developer network site that I use regularly where evryone is so keen to help (me included).
Having said that its still the best site for us Hermese peeps. I would be in no state to unlock if it wasnt for this site. I just hope nothing goes wrong.

Asif

3 thoughts on this:
1. It is scary when the Germans are nicer than us
2. You gotta feel sorry for anyone hanging around in an SAP developer network
3. We aren't so bad when people have done research. It is the "HELP PLZ!!!!! - JUST GOT MY HERMES THIS MORNING AND BRICKED IT!!!!" posts that get people upset. Or the "CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF THERE IS A WM6 ROM AVAILABLE FOR THE 8525 BY CINGULAR????" People who do their research and ask don't get crucified too badly - usually.
Oh, and regarding the question - doesn't really matter, since (as galaxys noted) the unlocker uses it's own SPL called SSPL and overrides whatever SPL you have loaded. However, it is good practice to throw HardSPL on their as the first step, since it protects the Hermes from having it's bootloader borked - and that is a good thing!
Hi todd_gj
There are not that many Germans on the SAP dewv Networks. Its mainly asian probably in Southern India. Most of the software is now developed out there, especially sisnce it costs $10 an hour. I bet most WM5/6 is churned out over there.
But I do take your point. You need to do your reading, but i have found a little extra help goes a long way to making sense of it all.

Hey guys, just joined your community and the pocket pc community all together.
I just ordered my HTC Nike (Touch Dual) from bell, and upgraded to unlimited data. I am told by others I work with, that romming is 100% necessary to get the most out of your phone.
I am just curious, is there a rom out there that is more heavily used than others? I see quite a few threads for different roms, and I honestly have no idea which one to go with.
To be safe I perfer to go with the flow, and do what everyone else is doing =p So if there is a rom that is considered most popular or has become the standard, can someone please point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
anyone?
I need a stable rom that will unlock the ENTIRE functionality of the device, I have not yet received it, its coming in the mail so im not sure the exact device version.
Its from Bell Canada (I live in canada), and it has WM 6.1 Pro
bump (please someone help me out with advice)
Im from canada so im not sure if it will be a neon or a niki. Bell is my service provider.
What I need most is all the features and applications locked out by bell to be unlocked and the ability to teather with bluetooth to my laptop for high speed.
I'll also be configuring it for ms exchange (Work related).
I have no idea how this rom stuff works or why there are so many or how to choose. All I want is someone point me at a good one for the above needs.
Thanks.
ok i got the Touch Dual version, its a Neon400, perhaps that will help with giving advice.
Thanks in advance!
use new 6.1 rom

awsome, do i need to unlock the phone for this?
and if so, do i just follow the stickied hardspl thread?
Sorry folks, cingular8525 stuck with mobile 5 ??? I want to upgrade to mobile 6. Is there anywhere I can do this? Old provider whom i bought phone from two years ago out of business (edge wireless).
I have not known to upgrade to windows mobile 6 until i switched provider to att. Talked to htc, att, and others and apparently i missed the second coming of htc upgrade. I am not very savvy but need upgrade is there a place that is available for me to upgrade or do i have to buy some program? Phone cost me some money two years ago and att wants me to get new phone for their better internet service. I thought i had a GREAT phone already.
Thank you so much for your help. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
It depends whether you want a official rom for not as there are many people in this hermes forum who have cooked roms that run wm6/6.1 and now some are running 6.5 as the os.
Here is a link to the hermes wiki page http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes there you will find other pages that tell you all about flashing roms onto your device.
Hope this helps and Good luck
yep, just follow the wiki and make sure u install hardspl before flashing any roms!
make sure u install hardspl
Glad someone remembered to tell them.....
