Morning guys and girls
Does anyone know of a way to make a registry key read only on WM6?
The reason I ask is that I get my direct push email via my work exchange server, but the lovely admin has decided to set a 5 min lock out policy that HAS to be implemented on the phone to accept the emails.
Basically that means every 5 mins the phone locks up and requires a PIN to unlock it, very annoying to say the least (I know its a security feature, but when you quickly want to check your emails/calender, its just annoying )
So, after many hours of searching through the registry I've found the key that decides how long the "lockout" interval is:
HKLM\Comm\Security\Policy\AE\{loadsofrandomnumbers}\AEFrequencyValue
Now this key is set to 5 as default (as its a 5min lockout rule) but when set to 999, I get 16.7 hours where I'm not bugged by lock outs. But back to my original question, the policy must "re-apply" its self every day as the offending reg key gets set back to 5 quite often. If I could make that reg key read only, then it wouldn't be able to change it back.
Thanks in advance guys!
Unlikely there is a way to make it read-only. Much realistic way to solve it is to
[1] hack the policy
[2] change the key just after is has been applied.
There is a home made software, RunEveryday (available in this forum) that runs your specific program everyday. If you were able to make a program or possibly CAB to change this, probably you can change it everyday.
Sorry to sound like a complete noob, but I'm attempting to write my first cab and have got this far...
[Version]
Signature="$Windows NT$"
CESignature="$Windows CE$"
Provider="mixmasterollie"
[CEStrings]
AppName="PIN Hack"
[SourceDisksNames]
1 = ,"Files",,.
[SourceDisksFiles]
"SAMPLE FILE.TXT"=1
[CopyFiles1]
"SAMPLE FILE.TXT",,,0x00000000
[DestinationDirs]
CopyFiles1=0,"\Storage"
[AddRegistry]
HKLM,"Comm\Security\Policy\LASSD\AE\{50C13377-C66D-400C-889E-C316FC4AB374}","AEFrequencyValue=0x0003E7"
[DefaultInstall]
CopyFiles=CopyFiles1
AddReg=AddRegistry
I've got cabwizsp.exe, makecab.exe and cabwiz.ddf, dragging my above inf on to cabwizsp.exe creates me a cab, but the cab doesn't "successfully" install
I'm not too sure I've written my "AddRegistry" bit correctly if anyone would be so kind as to correct it?
Thanks
I would use SKschema and write a little script which just overwrites the reg key every couple of minutes. Or use the (free) MORTscript.
Wasn't there already a hack to disable this policy? I'm sure I've seen it, about 6 months ago.
Since the lock is activated immediately, rewriting the registry ever minute or so won't really help I guess. However, in other cases, I would suggest using the state and notification broker to monitor the registry keys, get notification of a change of state, and immediately overwrite it.

Ok, I'm hoping someone may have some idea why this error is plaguing me.
After a hard-reset, the following behavior is observed on the T-mobile 3.14 rom.
1. Set Ringer (or leave at default) to anything.
2. Hit Ok.
3. Change volume to either Off or Vibrate.
4. Go back to phone options - ringer is now set to "BellDitty".
Odd thing is that when volume is restored, the phone doesn't play anything when an incomming call is received - not even the listed "BellDitty".
Anyone know what the problem is? How to work around it? Is the ringer just set in the registry? If it is, then it could just be a case of writing a program to restore the ringer ever 2 sec. or so.
Hope you guys can help - a phone that fails to ring is a misbehaving in my book.
Thanks.
Fixed!!!
After doing some hunting, here is what I found. If you guys have some spare time, try doing this to your phones and see if you have the same oddball results. From what I found:
When the Pocket PC is put into Mute, a key in the registry (HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0) named Sound is set to *none* or *vibrate* depending on what you mute to. There is another key in that branch named “SavedSound”, which has the ringer you setup in Phone options. Now, as long as you don’t go into Phone options and hit “Ok” while the phone is muted, the registry keys work just fine – as soon as you unmute, the value of “Sound” gets set to whatever “SavedSound” is. HOWEVER – if you do go into phone options and hit OK, it confuses PPC 2002. It writes the new sound to the “Sound” key, however it never cleans up after itself in the same way it would if you unmated. Now when you unmute, it looks to the Sound key to see if it says *none* or *vibrate* so it knows to re-enable the ringtone. When it finds the saved value from the phone applet (that you hit “OK” to) it assumes that the phone was unmuted, even though it wasn’t.

Well researched !
[ I've had this thought more often: do we have a Microsoft representative in the room here? If not, I guess we need to have some protocol for reporting issues from our collective brain back to the developers. (But ofcourse MS really needs to be here and read the forum if they're serious about making this a real phone.) ]
Hi
So every time I power on my StarTrek there is this sound...its like a tune or something...I did not mind it at first till I was in class and decided to turn on my phone to check my TXT messages. It only happens when you Power on the device...any one have any idea on how to disable that sound ? or change it ?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\
There is a list of system sounds. In this list there is "Shutdown" maybe a good place to have a look. Have used this branch of the reg tree to alter all my system notifications to something nicer.
However my Qtek 8500 is running the 3125 Rom and its never made any startup or shutdown sounds.
Download and use Breaksofts Mobile Reg Editor, allows you to use the PC to edit the reg on the device, much easier than doing it on the device and its free !!!
http://www.breaksoft.com/Blog/Utilities/2005/1/Mobile_Registry_Editor.aspx
Alternatively just leave the phone on but put it in Flight mode when in class !
Humm I will have to check that out ... I just got my phone and only used it for a few hours and went back to my 8125 (Wizard) perhaps its time to install total commander on here to do just that
I wonder if others who have the 3125 (phone from cingular as assposed to buying the 8500 and then putting the Cingualr Rom on it) have this experience
With a registy editor it is a simple registry fix to kill them.
Got to HKLM>software>HTC> you will see entries for both startup and shudown. Go to the WAV default entries and delete them (\windows\STARTUP_422.wav). Write in the word none in their place. Return to the home screen. Soft reset and you'll just hear silence on startup and shutdown.
HKLM>software>HTC> Branch is not in my reg tree nor is the STARTUP_422.wav anywhere in system.
Guys
I have searched the forum but cant find anything like this. When ever i set the screen lock it doesnt work, it ONLY works when i put a PIN on the device. I dont really want a pin on the device, just the screen to lock when it in my pocket.... any advice??
Oh this was working, but just suddenly stopped, I have tried factory resets but still nothing.....
Do you mean your lock slider stopped appearing? That's what just happened to mine. PITA when it's in its pouch because it keeps launching. Am trying to find a fix.
yes thats it. It just doesnt show any lock screen, but if i put a pin on the device it works fine, well except for showing a pin entry request which i dont want
OK, hello everybody.
I bump this one, because it's my issue too.
The fact is: at beginning the phone was ok. After screen went off, and when I turned it on, it used to show only the slide button, that used to unlock the phone, and that was all.
That was OK.
AFTER I SET UP AN EXCHANGE ACCOUNT (I make it twice: second time after a ROM Upgrade) the phone has FORCED ME to store a pin, and now the "request pin/password to unlock phone" function CANNOT BE TURNED OFF.
So, when screen goes down I MUST:
1) Click the on/off button
2) slide the on screen button
3) type in the unlock PIN and press "unlock"
Any way, any idea to disable ONLY THE 3 ??
Thank you
EDIT: HTC support understands NOTHING I'll keep this thread updated if any solution will be found...
EDIT 2: THE SOLUTION
Ok, after a long search: here's the solution (it's not spam: it's the solution to a problem)
http : // www . etenblog.com/2008/01/21/disable-exchange-security-policy-for-windows-mobile-devices/
and this is the original author:
http : // dedjo . blogspot.com/2007/12/how-to-disable-exchange-security-policy.html
(remove extra spaces)
DISABLE the exchange security policies (set key to 1 DWORD)
That was the thing that cause the FORCED REQUEST for pin/password.
EDIT3: BUT... everytime you sync with exchange, it FORCE YOU THAT POLICY again. So you have to ask your exchange admin to solve it.
I'm currently using my Vibrant for work. In order to connect to corporate email I am required to have security protocols in place that requires me to enter in an alpha-numeric password containing 8+ characters every time I wake the device. As you could imagine is it a real pain to plug in the lengthy password every time I want to use my phone. If I disable the security, my email will not allow me to connect to corporate. What would be great is if there was a way to use the pattern lock, and a correct input on that would plug in my alpha-numeric password automatically and unlock the screen so I would not have to type it every time. Does anyone know if this is possible?
Open a notepad app , type password and copy / paste .

If my work required that, and required me to read work email on a mobile device, they would be supplying said device to me.
How are they tying the email to the unlock wake on your vibrant?

As far as I know there isn't a way to do that, someone with more knowledge may be able to shine a different light on this. However, over in the Evo 4G area, there is a thread that talks about how to modify the Email.apk so you don't have to enter in a password or PIN (and it works quite well). Just keep in mind, you are the one responsible for your own actions if you get caught breaking your company's security policy.
jbeez, it is through a security profile that is pushed to the device before the initial sync occurs. The profile becomes basically a device admin and sets policy that you have to use a PIN or password to unlock the phone. It can also allow them to wipe the phone if they want. It can only do this if you agree to it. If you don't agree, you don't get mail.
Thanks for the replies folks. The local client on the device contains the security parameters. Would be nice if there is a way to script something to plug in the password automatically without having to type it. Maybe if the keys were bigger, but that does not help with having to plug in an 8+ alpha-numeric pw every time.
Take a look at this...I mean at the security removed gtab email. It might help.

Hi Guys,
Well i hope this is not a dupe post, however ill give it a shot.
So i have my new Android phone that is setup with Exchange syncing from work. There is a PIN number that is forced onto my phone which is ok, however coming from an iphone they had a really neat feature where i could set the timeout on the PIN to say 15mins, then anytime i used my phone during that time i didn't have to enter in the PIN. This was ok with me. However since moving to Android, it seems that when i set the PIN and the screen lock feature to say 2 mins (so the screen will turn off quickly) when i wake it up the phone asks me for a PIN. It is starting to get quite annoying.
Now before you all jump on the security bandwagon, i want to first say i am happy with having to enter the PIN, however i was wondering if there is an app or solution out there that could make it similar to the way the iphone handles the PIN timeout.
I am using a carrier supplied phone, so no rooting or hacks have been done to the phone yet.
Does anyone currently know if there is any way to add in the PIN timeout feature (or whatever it may be called) so that when i wake my phone from sleep within a certain time, the PIN will not be asked until that timer has been met?
The apps i have seen do NOT work when exchange sync is enabled.
Any help would be really appreciated.
cheers
Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on my question?
Thanks.
There's a version of email with the security requirement disabled. This would allow you to set your own password requirements and screen time out.
Where could I find this replacement email app?
