I'm on Fido which uses Rogers' network. As far as I can tell, Rogers uses HSPDA as opposed to WCDMA.
I recently flashed my phone (back to WM5, after giving WM6 a try but abandoning it due to the lack of a working Mac sync product at the moment), and now have the following versions:
R 1.38.00.10
G 32.71.7020.12H
D 2.11
I understand the 'H' indicates an HSPDA radio protocol, but I'm confused because the Phone->Band settings give me Auto, GSM and WCDMA as options. Is this just some sort of mismatch between text strings, or a larger problem?
The reason this even came up is that I can no longer send / receive text messages or make / receive phone calls when logged into the 3G network, but when forcing a login to the GSM network everything is fine.
Will a new radio version fix this?
(As an aside, WiFi isn't working right now either, which may or may not be an issue with the phone, and SMS notifications no longer vibrate or notify via sound since the update... fun times)
HSDPA is WCDMA. If your protocol has W that just means it can't use the faster HSDPA protocol.
Technically, WCDMA is a lower-level communications protocol. UMTS is what's commonly known as 3G for us GSM people - it's the higher-lever communications technology responsible for voice and data transfer that uses WCDMA. HSDPA is an upgrade to UMTS that provides high-speed data downloads (but not uploads). When a carrier implements HSDPA, regular-speed UMTS is still available for those that don't support or don't enable HSDPA.
Wow, that's a lot of acronyms. There should be a wiki article on this...
3g=umts , 3.5g= Hsdpa

So using the secret menu, I was trying different methods to see what signal strengths I was getting at my place, same spot. Interesting enough, the signal strength bars are different when using CDMA auto prl (4-bars) and EvDo only (2-bars) mode, even though I still see the 3g icon. Also, it seems the 1x radio is always on in every mode except EvDo only, plus I tried calling using all 5 modes.
Thus far, (1-yes, 0-no) I can make a call in mode:
CDMA auto PRL - 1
CDMA only - 1
EvDo only - 0
CDMA + LTE/EvDo - 1
LTE only - 1
so my question is, why can't I (and is anyone able to) make calls over EvDo only mode? When I place one, it hangs for a sec, and ends automatically saying "Call was lost". I was hoping to get better call quality (even if I can't have 4g speed), cuz right now calls sometimes sound muffled (but clear enough to understand), compared to when I had my nexus one on t-mo. (I tried eHRPD and EvDo-rev.a modes to no avail)
PS I know (atleast I read somewhere) that the T-Bolt cannot support calls over LTE itself, or VoLTE as it's called (unless if that's changed or I am wrong.)
Any thoughts? your experiences? I just want to get ppl's thoughts on this.
So... I guess no answers then?
Well, EvDO-only would not permit any voice calls because you've told the radio to only operate with a data signal. EvDO, or "Evolution-Data Optimized", is the 3G data component of CDMA wireless networks, so without a preferred network mode that includes CDMA you won't have any voice service.
when i had my phone on evdo only (stupidly thinking it was 1x) i couldn't make or receive any calls
evdo handles data, 1x handles calls/sms

Right. CDMA = 1x data and voice EVDO = data only. If you force the phone into a data only mode, voice will not function.
From what I've read, it's possible to to disable the high speed connection and leave only EDGE and other slow connection by change network mode to GSM only. However when I tried that on mine, I lost all connections altogether include voice call, and left with "unregistered sim, emergency call only". My carrier is CDMA, so not sure if that has anything with it.
What am I missing here?
Hspa 3g only on gsm system.
For cdma you have 1x and evdo..don't know if you can disable evdo or not. Please see setting/wireless & networks

My SG2 is set up in network mode with GSM/WCDMA(Auto mode).
When I’m home the signal strenght, WCDMA, is -101 dBm 7asu and the voice quality is very bad, almost unusable.
When I manually switch to GSM the signal pops up to -73 and 15 asu and I can talk with a sound quality as it should be.
To me it seems that the phone doesn’t switch to GSM, or too late, when the WCDMA signal is bad.
I have tried quite a few different modems for the SG2 but I can’t see any difference between the versions. Maybe it’s the network provider that manage when to switch?
If would be great if someone could give me some info. on how the switching between WCDMA and GSM works, and the thresholds.
GSM auto (PRL) will favour GSM over 3G.
I am not sure if it will work with your network, but you can only try...........
There are a few apps around that will do it, or you can just use the following:
1. Phone dialer *#*#4636#*#*
2. Phone info
3. Set preferred network type to : GSM auto (PRL)
Edit: I am not sure if it will revert after a reboot.
This post was rather useful info, although different phone and network, principle is the same:

I have a one converted to GPE and where I live I get great LTE coverage. However at work its weak and my one is constantly switching between LTE and hspa.
How would I set my phone to only connect to hspa while at work to avoid the constant switching? In setting under network mode there is only options for LTE 3g and 2g.
Does 3g include hspa and if not I've read about a code to enter from dialpad that allows u to set netowkr. I need a method that will allow me to easily switch it depending on where I am.
If anyone knows how to do this any help would be great.
Hi All,
I just got the international Z5c, model E5823, which supports both tmo us LTE bands in my area (bands 1 and 12). When I have preferred network type set to 3G, I get more bars and have data connectivity. When I switch it to 4G, the bars go down to 1 or 2, and I get no data.
I did a logcat while switching from 3G to 4G and noticed that while switching, the icon switches between H+ and H, then eventually drops out. I'm still trying to see if there is anything useful in the logcat, but the one thing I noticed that seemed interesting was
Code:
D/StatusBar.NetworkController( 2598): updateIconSet, voice network type is: 13/LTE, data network type is: 13/LTE
To me, this looks like I might be seeing issues with some failed attempt to use voice over lte (as this phone supports it).
Regardless, does anyone know how I can disable voice over LTE? There was an option in the phone menu on the Z3 supposedly that would let you toggle, but I don't see it anywhere on this.
I'm going to be cross posting this in the sony forums as well, so if I hear back I'll post here.
Fixed it. I turned it onto 3g and selected "Internet settings" from the networking menu, which seems to have downloaded some configuration stuff from my carrier. After switching back to 4g I have fully working data.
