Has anyone try or does anyone know why it could or could not be done? Biggest MicroSD/TransFlash is 2Gb or 4Gb?
possibly yes...

I would guess that if the power consumption and size are the same for a larger drive then the answer would be yes. Check the specifications of the installed drive and see if any larger drives exist with the same power consuption and size....let us know what you find...i'm interested. Also, PocketPCTechs are known for updates of this sort. You might consider e-mailing them and asking if they plan on having a HD upgrade for the Athena and letting us know what they say.
I've only found a 4gig SDHC card. If you find something larger let us know this also.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the tilt sensor for the Vueflow is built into the hard drive.... So swapping it for another drive would prevent that from working.

Wow, that would make it not possible unless you didn't care for the VueFlow.
What I settled for trying.
I found a 16Gb CompactFlash to replace the MicroDrive. Pricey... very pricey, but want to try that. Power comsumption is slighly lower, so I might see improvement. I will try to mirror the "drives" before inserting the CompactFlash. I don't see why it wouldn't work. Access time is much faster also. Can't wait to try to run a movie on a plasma. Finally an alternative to renting movies in hotels! For those interrested in the drive: http://www.flash-memory-store.com/16gb-compact-flash.html The Qmemory drive seems the most interresting one. 24Mb/s access... not even sure the south bridge on this device can access the drive that fast.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think the Athena used Compact Flash. I'm sure if we contact Hitachi support they will provide us with information on a larger drive. Maybe PocketPC Tech's will soon offer an upgrade. I would prefer having them do it with a warranty.
Maybe they don't make a larger MicroDrive...check out the site

Hitachi isn't the problem... the problem is the darn CE-ATA interface I didn't notice. Intel is heading the new standard, and the founding member? Hitachi. So far, no other drives then Hitachi's 3K8. Well, they have 2/4/6/8 Gb in sizes, nothing else. 10Gb was suppose to exist, but never saw light. Tough luck for now. Until 20Gb transflash sees light, no expansion. Why oh why HTC didn't you choose the standard CF interface? Looks like I'm returning a 16Gb CF card. :-S

Good that HTC installed from the beginning the max available capacity, not 2/4/6 GB.
That's another way of looking at it. It's positive... true. I guess if you are ultra conscious in the design also, shaving off a few milimeters and tenth of grams is immportant also.
Why do people keep referring to Transflash? Transflash was the standard that became MicroSD, I thought - the thumbnail sized cards. MiniSD is like the SD equivalent of the 1/2 MMC cards.

Doesn't really matter, you can put a Transflash (MicroSD) card into a MiniSD adapter.

Uh, yeah, and you can put a Transflash into an SD card adaptor and use it in your camera, too, if you want expensive, slow, small amounts of memory.
I'm not saying that it's impossible to use Transflash in the device, but that people saying Transflash may be confused about what card slot the device has and buy the wrong memory. Or more importantly, people reading might think it has a MicroSD slot.
I use MicroSD aka Transflash because I can put them in all my devices 9sometimes using adapters obviously). Where SD or MiniSD wouldn't fit in a Motorola phone or Blackberry with Transflash (or MicroSD for the purists *grin*)
cheers! I love my Athena the way it is. I still feel the urge to tweak it though! ;-)
Memory is so cheap these days, I just get each device a card - especially since my Nokia's MiniSD card doesn't seem to be recognised by the Mac (I haven't tried it in the Athena yet). 4GB is only £40!
That looks like a 1" drive, like wots inside some iPods. Is it even smaller than that?

MicroSDHC 4Gb. TyTN's compatibility?
Could someone confirm if this microSDHC is compatible with TyTN (hermes 200)?
I read on other foruns that is not compatible (maybe with WM05...). :?
Just have to wait till they come out and someone else has acuttaly tried putting one in there device!
I just hope the hermes supports it correctly, ie doesnt kill batt life e.t.c.
Oh and its going to need to be fat32 formatted, which shouldnt make much odds.

I will let you know whether it works when mine arrives
When it's over the 2Gb , it has to be HC. The HC makes the addressing of hight then the FAT maximum addresable of 2Gb. Some 2Gb cards are and others are not, but anything over 2Gb is High Capacity period. So you NEED to have FAT32 also on these... otherwise, if you manage to format it in FAT, it will acutally have 2Gb of space only.

Why?? I have a 4gb SD for my (gasp!!) LifeDrive that is not SDHC. Formatted with Fat32, but not SDHC. Same design, just bigger, isn't it? The question is, would my 8525 handle a >2gb microSD, not -HC?
Would be interested to see how these go so I can drop my iPod nano 4GB and use this in the car with my CK-20W A2DP Car Kit

That's pritty much my point. In normal SD cards they have found a way to make 4GB's without SDHC, somehow. There not made to the official standard of either SDHC or just plain SD though; so it's even more confusing for people!
I believe it's to do with the fact that FAT32 is not part of the SD specification but the non-SDHC 4GB cards use it anyway.
But anyway, those not so keen on buying the 4GB straight away will just have to wait and see what others report.
At the moment the fact 4GB is so much more per GB then 2GB or 1GB is putting me off, but then that's always the same with the newest.
I just got a mail from mobymemory, they're pushing back the delivery date to the 22nd of June
What about microSD 8Gb...

Hi,
is there a patch/firmware fix to use 4 GB miniSDCard's with HTC Wizard ?
I tryed it in a "Vodafone VPA II compact" with Windows Mobile 5.
But only a 2 GB miniSDCard can be read.
Thanks
bye
ds2k5
The limitation will be because the 4GB card is SDHC (High capacity) whereas the 2GB card is not. AFAIK, this cannot be patched with drivers as it is a hardware limitation. (I may be wrong though...)
You don't need any patch you must buy 4GBMiniSD card (!!! no MiniSDHC !!!), its hard to find to buy ! I have one 4GBMiniSD Topram and it works well !
Both l3v5y and mrobo are correct, in their own ways. Yes, it is possible to buy a 4 gig SD chip that will work in your Wizard, and yes, if it is SDHC it will NOT work in your phone, and no, there are no software patches, and yes, it is a hardware limitation of the SD card slot. Also, it is correct that the non SDHC chips are hard to find by comparison to the standard 2 gig chips, which are being given away as breakfast cereal toys these days...
Google search: 4GB minisd -SDHC -miniSDHC

I understand that this is known as a hardware limitation, but what exactly in the hardware limits it...is it the SD card controller, or is it the depth of the address bus? Basically, I'm not one to be satisfied with the reason "It's just a hardware limitation" without knowing why...
Hardware means = parts included in your wizard, physical ones
Unless you plan to dismantle your Wizard to find which ones you must replace, I don't see any other explanation to sort your problem about using 4Gb card
*sigh*...
Alright...I know by hardware limitation It means the parts in there.
What I want to know is what part, and why does it limit it. Giving the reason as a "Hardware limitation" is like someone asking "Why is the sky blue?" and you going "Because it is..."
What I want to know is why the hardware limits it. We know that there is no hardware differences on the outside of the miniSD and miniSDHC cards, ie they have the same number of lines heading into the cards. What I'd guess (without any research) it would be is the SD controller on the main board only has enough address bus lines going to it to address the 2GB max of regular SD, not a single byte more. If that's the case replacing hardware won't work unless you plan to replace the main board. And while you are at it why don't you just replace the entire phone? But I'd like to know for sure - not to replace anything, as I've already explained that's more work than it's worth - but for the academics of it.
So BUY IT!!!

It's definitely a firmware issue, not a hardware issue. If you read up on the SD sites and the SD Wiki site it tells you the difference between SD and SDHC. It comes down to how you read the cards. The pinouts are the same for both cards.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card
Here's a patch that I've not tried because I don't have any SDHC cards.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=344338
In theory it should work.
Here's why:
Devices that use SD cards identify the card by requesting a 128-bit identification string from the card. For standard-capacity SD cards, 12 of the bits are used to identify the number of memory clusters (ranging from 1 to 4096) and 3 of the bits are used to identify the number of blocks per cluster (which decode to 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 or 512 blocks per cluster).
In older 1.x implementations the standard capacity block was exactly 512 bytes. This gives 4096 x 512 x 512 = 1 gigabyte of storage memory. A later revision of the 1.x standard allowed a 4-bit field to indicate 1024 or 2048 bytes per block instead, yielding more than 1 gigabyte of memory storage. Devices designed before this change may incorrectly identify such cards, usually by misidentifying a card with lower capacity than is the case by assuming 512 bytes per block rather than 1024 or 2048.
For the new SDHC high capacity card (2.0) implementation, 22 bits of the identification string are used to indicate the memory size in increments of 512 KBytes. Currently 16 of the 22 bits are allowed to be used, giving a maximum size of 32 GB. All SDHC 4-GB and larger cards must be 2.0 implementations. Two bits that were previously reserved and fixed at 0 are now used for identifying the type of card, 0=standard, 1=HC, 2=reserved, 3=reserved. Non-HC devices are not programmed to read this code and therefore cannot correctly read the identification of the card.
FirmWare, a? So what do You think, what we can do?

Be extremely wary about buying SD cards via eBay. Many have been burned by small sellers forging cards that say 4G on the chip, but often have much lower (like 256K) memory actual. Silkscreening is easy and cheap way to forge a higher-value card from a lower one, and since it's eBay, your only payback is to give them a bad review and report them to eBay. You're still out the $, and have a crap SD card.
Even if it's a legitimate seller, they might not know the difference between an SDHC card and a regular SD card.
As I said, be wary. Caveat Emptor.
Not G4 specific, moved > accessories.
i know for a fact that there are 4GB non-HC miniSD's out there... that will work on our wizards. otherwise, stick with a 2GB.
Success
I purchased one of the cards shown above from TopRam. It would not read in my phone nor would it read in a reader (it just hung my system), so I requested a return/replacement. It took a while due to the long shipping, but I got the replacement a few days ago and it worked immediately! I now have my entire GPS maps and a bunch of audiobooks, music and movies on my phone, all at once! 4GB is SO much better than 2GB (especially when the stupid GPS maps take up almost all of 2GB)!
Thanks

Hmm Thanks for the infor ...
So at last we can use 4GB Simple SD in Wizard ...
I am confused about this being a hardware issue - please forgive the noob
(I would like to apologize in advance for the fact that I might hijack this thread. It is not my intent.)
I am a long time Treo 650 user.
Specs - Treo
Specs - Wizard
The Treo 650 (AFAIK) was designed for all of 1GB of non-HC memory. The replacement of a driver was all that was required for my Treo to be capable of using up to 8GBs of SDHC memory. (If you are familiar with the Treo you know that there was more than one file in the SDHC patch, but that was because apps like Memo needed to be patched as well.)
So, while I am not expecting anyone to suddenly jump up and shout "Eureka! He's right - it has been a software issue all along!" I am wondering what it is about newer hardware that ended up interfering with something older hardware could do.
I realize there may not be an easy answer to this, but as I burn through patch after patch for the wizard - each promising SDHC, and not delivering on the promise - I have to wonder if it was not either purposefully done or is a flaw in WMedition.
After reading thread after thread, after thread I cannot wrap my brain around the volume of patches for something that is thought not to work.
Since many of you in this forum have probably been down this road already is there any combination which gives the greatest chance of success, using storage which is available today?
i.e. WM6.1 + "miniSD HC Patch v2.2.cab" + "SAMSUNG 4GB MINI SDHC CARD" = Wizard + 4GB SDHC
(I am looking for an SDHC solution because I do not see much to convince me that non-HC memory over 2GB is any easier to get working than HC 2GB and up, but HC is MUCH easier to come by.)
One last thing... Is there some relationship between the SIM and storage on the Wizard? I have a bad SIM I use for testing. When I insert my working SIM in the wizard I can get my 2GB SD card working. Then I can run tests, etc. with my bad SIM in the Wizard. If I mess up and the SD card stops working I MUST reinsert my good SIM to get it working again. Then I can switch back, once more, until I screw up again. Is this the way the wizard is designed? I have also noticed that I never gotten my 2GB SD card to work unless there is a SIM in the phone. On the Treo there is no relationship between the two, whatsoever.

I can confirm that the 16GB card works fine, not sure about 32GB.
What would you put on the 32GB card to fill it up, lot's of movies? I have lots of apps, TomTom maps of the UK & USA, some movies & mp3's and still have plenty of room left over. Maybe in time I will look back and wish I purchased a 32GB but at the moment It's more than enough.

I would like a 32gb card because :
a) Since I can mount my phone as USB mass storage, it could replace my external USB drive (except it uses the FAT32 file system not NTFS)
b) I'm backpacking around Europe soon, so loading it up with movies, music & tv shows for all the long flights & train rides would be great.

I heard that the problem is that they very hot and slow, so still not availaible for sale. Also i heard that they can be used on Kaiser
Even when the 32GB cards come out, they will be relatively very expensive. It would be much cheaper to buy 2 16GB cards and swap-out when wanted. After all, you can swap cards easily enough if you only use them for media and avoid putting programs and other essential data on them. There's surely enough storage on board the D2 for all the progs you could want?
Then just stick, say, music on one card and video on the other. Swapping takes 30 seconds, maybe? The other benefit is if you get a card failure it's a lot less traumatic to your wallet.
@ root beer: It's very easy to fill up 32GB, a lot of people's music collection @ 320k takes up this space. Before you even consider videos etc

Agreed, i just bought a 16GB card for my TD2, but tried it in my old Touch Dual and it works fine, I was always advised that could only take 8GB.
What is the thing that like makes a limit for how much a device can take? I mean, there must be something.
Its the limitations of SD. Any device that is SD 2.0 Complient will work with upto 32GB wheras SD1.x devices will work with cards <2GB
Sam
Any news on the 32gb Micro SD card ?
hope it wil be a class 8 or 10
If the 32GB MicroSDHC card comes out anytime soon (Which I doubt), the first ones will be class 2 or 4 at best, and cost at least half-again as much as two 16GB cards. A single 16Gb card is $50 @ microcenter.com, so I predict once the 32GB's come out, they'll be at least $150 each.

My 16GB class 6 Adata card has been problematic when transferring larger files via the USB phone connection mode. If I remove the card and place it in a card reader it works perfectly.
YMMV, cause it might be my card or my system that causes such bugs. Just wanted to bring it to your attention.
hi, I'm looking to buy a 64GB MicroSDXC card
do they compatible with photon ?
can anybody who have them give some inputs ?
thank you.
No, the Photon only supports microSDHC, and like you said, the 64gb (also, anything over 32gb) is classified as microSDXC.
32gb + 16gb internal should be more than enough anyways, provided you use it wisely.
If you absolutely NEED that amount of space, some users were able to use the Photon as a USB host and attach an external USB flash stick using a special USB-F-MicroUSB-M

I've seen a couple reports that they work fine on the Photon, but more that they don't. And the Droid4 and Bionic are reported to work.

The current 64GB cards are generally backwards compatible with SDHC in a lot of devices.
http://pocketnow.com/android/how-well-are-android-phones-handling-64gb-sdxc-memory-cards
I have a Sandisk 64 card - haven't tried it in my Photon, but it works fine in my Xoom and Cowon J3 MP3 player (linux).
So, I don't know for sure. (My Photon battery cover plastic clips won't take too many more removals or I'd try it)
I got my mom a 64gb sandisk mobile utra microsd card and its works perfectly. She uses the microsd for music and so far she hasnt had any problems.
http://www.sandisk.com/products/mob...crosdhc-and-microsdxc-uhs-i-cards-for-android
the 64GB is the exact one I got her.
Cool - good to know, thanks for the post.
I figured it would work fine in the Photon since it seems to work in about everything else with a SDHC 3.0 compatible slot.
And I got my spare battery cover via eBay today, so may try it soon.
- - and to "MooseV2" that said "no", please do your research in the future before making broad statements; TIA!

I have SanDisk Mobile Ultra 64Gb and so far, so good BUT.........I rarely have anything on it. I use ZumoCast to access all my music, photos, documents on my desktop at home? If Im doing a Server upgrade or something, I'll drag a few movies to card, but other than that, empty!
Everything I have read points to the 64GB working perfectly as long as you format it in the phone (FAT32)

Yea it works, I have a 64GB micro sd card. You will have to insert it and go to storage and reformat the sd card while its in the Photon and it will work. I get 60GB out of the 64GB
Sorry guys
You're in the Photon forum.
(And they so far appear to work in about everything - format in phone)
This looks like a good price for a class 6 card.

Read back, reading is.....never mind. Your correct, $64 is good price as I paid $99 from newegg. I had 32Gb class 10, I saw no difference, so o went back to sandisk 32Gb class 6, better speed!

Let me better explain my "No big difference, so I went back" comment. I had a 16Gb SanDisk Class 4, I was happy. I got 32Gb SanDisk Class 6 for $100.00 and I was happy. I got Komputer 32Gb Class 10 for @ the same. When I compared them read/write, depending on what I was reading or writing, the SanDisk was either faster OR not that far behind, so I went back to SanDisk for the realiabilaty. I now have 64Gb SanDisk Class 6 and I'm happy (Kinda of, there is nothing on it? I either use Google or ZumoCast to acces my desktop at home?)
My suggestion, look for stability, look at the reviews where people smarter than I have done extensive testing. Not all chips are alike. Also, look at your needs. If you take a ton of pictures or video, I assume you would need high write speed. If your a gamer, I assume you would need high read speeds? Just me!
Thanks for the further explanation! I'll probably just pick up the class 6. It's getting rave reviews on Amazon.
Last year SanDisk said (source: can't find it again) to expect 128GB microSDXC cards by the end of Q3 2013 (september), but, we're... still... waiting. I wonder what the holdup is?
As soon as they're spotted in the wild, I'll be buying one on day1 for the expected ~$100 asking price, which'll bring my total Note3 capacity up to 192GB(!). Also never had a corrupted card issue from SanDisk, unlike some others, so no qualms there.
And before anyone asks: Yes, 128GB is compatible with the Note3, even though the specs says only 64GB is supported. They always do that. the microSDXC spec actually supports up to 2TB, and there's no reason why the phone shouldn't be able address up to 2TB in hardware or software.
Anyway... keep an eye out folks. It'll look something like...... THIS:

EDIT (5 months later): 128GB is here! Only $120 at Amazon (sold out until April 9th); or $200 MSRP at BestBuy now. Might pop up on EBay (non-scam that is) before Amazon gets it back in stock.
Yup, i was one of those Crazy Early Adopters, see link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343164
those 64GB were going for $200 from the official SanDisk website.
Then 6 month later Best Buy had them for like $80, i almost went kaput
so this time around I'll just wait until the prices drop before ordering the 128 GB version

Ouch So you got yours in November of 2011 and paid the high early adopter tax.
I didn't have a SDXC capable phone until I picked up my S3 in June 2012, and only paid... $64.49 for my 64GB sandisk off of Ebay via China. Was a good deal at the time, as the price averaged higher for a few months following as demand for SDXC picked up (thanks to S3 sales).
I'm hoping the 128GB sdxc won't be so obscenely overpriced at launch.
I paid over $100 for a class 10 32GB. A year or so later they are less than half that. lol. O well, I wanted fast speeds and I got it. I just paid a hell of a lot of money at the time to get it (compared to what they cost now).

The 128gb will be around $220USD at launch, possibly more. That was the price of 64gb cards at launch.

$1 a gb is way high anymore. 64 gb can be had for under $50. If a 128 gb card was $128 I would buy one

Definately interested
I am definitely interested. Building up a big library of stuff on my current 64GB and wondering how that is going to continue working for me... Especially since we are all stuck with 32GB of memory instead of the option for more... What about the other card providers?
Isn't $200 for 128GB a huge ripoff?
Considering you have high Performance SSDS with longer durability AND built-in controllers with cache for nearly 50 cents per gig.
And how much larger are those SSDs than a microSD card?

Weird. My 64GB Sandisk has been working just fine for the last year and half, in a S3 and Note3. It's formatted Fat32 instead of exFAT, though, due to early compatibility issues with ROMs and recoveries. Will be reformatting as either exFAT or ext4 depending on when CM10 for the Note3 is ready.

have you even seen the inside of an SSD? Hint: Mostly empty space. The actual Memory chip is about the same size.
They just omit the extra high performance components (Like cache, controllers) on Micro SD packages.
Instead of putting in ONE big capacity chip = SLOW , they put a couple smaller chips So they can work FASTER in parallel
Same flash Memory technology , less Side components = more $?

I have the exact SanDisk card you have in your picture (64GB) and started using it in my S3, now have it in my Note 3. It has always worked perfectly. These caveats may be what helped achieve this success:
1. Never reformatted the card.
2. Never rooted either phone
3. Never took the card out unless the phone had finished turning off and was unplugged.
4. Never took the card out of the reader on my PC unless I first went into windows explorer and first selected "eject" for that drive letter, and waited until the message popped up on the desktop saying it was OK to disconnect that drive.

You serious? Those chips are usually 8/16/32gigs and they're bigger and thicker though not a lot. Yes, you're right they work in parallel, but they need ram, controllers and a lot more energy to work how they do and how fast. Shrinking 128gb to micro SD size is probably secondary to getting it to work reliably.

That's what I Mean, SD Cards have less Components but higher cost.
BTW, sdcards have internal controllers just lower performance Ones.
Hard to believe the cost of minutarizaton (which usually brings costs DOWN) is higher than the cost of enhanced performance .
Should at least balance out.
Any update on the 128GB micro-sdxc?
