done!
Open the exe with WinRAR.. I think that will do it for you.... you may even need to extract another exe within the top exe... the RUU_signed.nbh file should be 70-90M in size.
Mike
done! thanks everyone
Don't be lazy.
Run winrar by itself.
Search for the .exe file from winrar and open it.
You will see the .nbh files.

Make sure you change it to open "all files" from the open dialog box, not just the archive files.

I'm rather new to these kind of devices so please excuse the ignorance.
I have an XDA Atom Exec, I upgraded to WM6 with this site successfully.
I also would like to install HTC Home and Customizer as I like the big clock and icons, however I can't seem to find instructions on how to install them. I tried using the search function but nothing came up.
Can someone explain it to me please? Thank you.
Have you downloaded the cab files for HTC HOME and CUSTOMISER , if so just go copy them to your phone and then navigate from the file explorer of the phone to where you have pasted , and run (tap) Hope this helps.......
If you have not downloaded them ....find Ironeagles thread on this forum , to find the links
Or you can download the cab from http://www.pocketemu.com/download8.html

Carty..
Hi, thank you for trying to help.
I think the problem is that I can't run the "setup". It opens in Internet explorer just like on my PC, I downloaded another copy from Carty's site and the same thing happens. Do I need a special program to open the setup XML file?
Thanks again..

Well after downloading the zip file to my PC, I unzipped it in a created folder.
Sync'd my atom exec with the PC.
Opened File Explorer from ActiveSync, opened Program files on Atom Exec and just moved created folder with unzipped file into Atom.
After opened the created file from within the device and click "setup" with the stylus.
It opens up Internet Explorer and I can only view it as a document of some sort.
Hope that makes sense
No mate , you dont have to ZIP it (you are actually zipping the cab file which runs directly on the ppc , copy the .cab file without zipping it to your PC and then run ..)
This is what you do wrong

if you will list the contents of your zip file, that would be helpful. we don't normally copy files to program files for installation.
Thank you everyone... the problem was exactly what udayrulz was describing. I merely had to just move the file over to the device and click it, instead of unzipping, create a folder etc.
Thanks again, this plugin is much easier on the eyes!
No Problem , glad it worked out
Is there a way I can turn a PPC setup.exe into a .cab file?
Is there any software out there for the WM6 that you can put a bunch of cab files in a folder and it will auto install them all…so I don’t have to do them one by one?
visual studio 2005 & 2008 have a cab maker tool included. It does not require the source files to be created with studio...
Copy
Setup applications that run on your desktop PC simply copy the appropriate cab file to your device. You can extract the cab from the exe. You can also run the exe on your computer, and during the install process the cab will be transfered to another folder on your computer before transferring to your PPC. It is usually in Program Files/Microsoft Activesync/*App folder*, but sometimes it varies. Search your PC for .cab files and you should be able to find it.
There are programs like TAutoInstall (or something like that), SDAutoRun, and maybe one or two others that will run a series of cab files at first boot. You can probably find some discussion of Tautoinstall on PPCGeeks (edit: or try here). Search for threads by Tiermann. It might do what you're looking for.
WinCE Cab Manager is a powerful cab creation tool as well. You might be able to package multiple cabs within a single cab using it. Not sure, never tried. Good luck.
I have been using the activesync method of getting the cab and it works great.

this is the location for the cabs * this is what he's talking about

So if i dont have my phone hooked up, and i a run exe file, it will create a cab file and place it "Program Files/Microsoft Activesync/*App folder* " and then i just have to go to that folder and copy the cab file?

No, once you install the executable to your phone (using .exe) the first time, it will drop the cab in the "Program Files/Microsoft Activesync/*App folder*" for future use.
I used to use Tools-add/remove programs within activesync to reinstall these programs that were only .exe, but I learned recently that you could go into the folder above after first install and get the cabs that activesync extracts to accomplish this add/remove feature.

Probably different on Vista/WMDC.
Do a search on your computer for .cab files.

You should look into Sashimi... it's pretty cool you can just drop the cab files in a directory and it auto installs all of 'em... also has the ability to execute EXEs, REG files, Copy files to root of device, run MortScripts, and xml files too... all part of an automated process.. you click go after a hard reset and it is on its way!
Another nice thing I like about it vs the sdconfig autoinstallers is there is really no maintenance to scripts/etc once you update your software.. all you do is manage the files in a directory structure which is as easy as copy and paste of the cab/etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=392983
I have searched for the .cab and cant find anywhere that Windows Mobile Device Manger puts them
You can also try extracting the cabs directly from the exe. Use a program like WinRAR to open the exe. There will often be multiple cabs for various WM versions (ie 2003, WM5, WM6, etc), and they are usually not named very desciptively, so a little trial and error will probably be necessary.
WinRar seems to extract the exe's and give me the cabs....THANKS ALOT

Extracting the EXE's to get the cab's
Not all executables are self-extracting executables. This will only work with self-extracting executables.
If you can't extract your executable with Winrar, the only other option is to run it with your phone unplugged from Activesync, then find the cab on your PC. Again, with this method, not all executables work that way. I have found a couple that I simply COULD NOT produce a cab from.

I've generally found that I can do this with pretty much any setup executable, although I use 7-Zip instead of WinRAR (it's free and fantastic).
As for the Sashimi recommendation, I can't agree enough. The program is pure awesomeness.
Universal extractor i guess is the way to go. extracts all files (cabs) from any .exe or .msi or anything else
Universal Extractor 1.5
Universal Extractor 1.6 Beta (vista)
Alrighty, here we goo.
I was looking around for voice to text apps, and I came across one.. called "Tellme"
Now, I as I understand this wasn't exactly made for my LEO-usa.
BUT IT DOES WORK.
I have installed the .cab file for this app, installed it correctly the only way one could do it. Then there was a file I was told to download called NETCFv35.wm.armv4i.cab.zip
Framework im guessing? But I have a problem, I don't know how to install this.. its a zip file, and when I unzip the file it breaks down the cab structure into 192380192381203981203498712348971230489 freaking FILES!
How do I install a cab file that is compressed into a zip file? if you HD2 users want to try and pickup where I left off, here you go.
do a google search for "tellme for hd2" Click the result that has tmobile's forums on it.
Scroll down the forum replies till you see words and convo's regarding TELLME. and you'll notice there is two files needed, the framework, and the cab file for the app.
I got the app installed, but the NETCFv35.wm.armv4i.cab confuses me because its a cab file that is in a zip file..
lol, sorry if I'm sounding redundant. but damn.
Heres the two files, I'll attach them below.

no worries. just download the .zip file, then unzip it into the the file "NETCFv35.wm.armv4i.cab". next copy this file and the tellme.cab file into your phone. run the NETCFv35.wm.armv4i.cab first and let it install. then follow by the tellme.cab. you're done.
yea, you have unzipped it twice, because winzip/winrar also see the .cab as a cabinet, or zip file, and opens it, when in fact that whole file is the windows mobile installer. extract the single cab file to desktop, copy it to your phone, click it in explorer on your phone.
Alrighty, I tried what you said..
I got the .cab file for the NET stuff on the device, attempted installation and it failed at the end, told me to close out of apps, and clear device space?
I have a little short of 1gb of Device memory left, and task manager did not have anything running.
Is it perhaps the ROM im using? I'm using the Energy ROM.
bumppp.
Hi guys, im new to smartphone, how can i convert files from .rar to .apk?
if this question has been asked before just send me the link, i did tried to search and i did not find similar request.
Thanks
A "rar" file is a compressed archive, like a ZIP file.
www.rarlabs.com to download the program.
I open it with winrar and i cannot find any .apk file on it, i only see some meta-inf folder and .dex .xml and .arsc file.
any advice from experts?
thanks
See the tutorials link in my sig.
i do it this way !! u can either do it thru any file managers thru ur phone ( which is always better) or thru ur system.
just change the .rar /.zip to .apk
eg:- angrybirds.rar to angrybirds.apk !! simple!!

Hello,
someone knows if it possible (and how) extract Wallpapers from the firmware downloaded with NaviFirm?
Thanks
I haven't explored the sync features in Zune yet - are you sure you can't get them through that??
Otherwise, .esco files can be opened like a normal zip. Look for the big .esco firmware file (around ~370MB) and extract the .img file from it. If you can read the contents of the .img file, I reckon you could get them...
THanks Tj,
no works...I found the big .esco, extracted the boot.img...and that file is "empty"...no Winzip no winrar no Dtools can how what's inside it...I wanna extract a carrier's wallpaper... :/
