Hi everyone,
I'm a long time viewer, first time poster. I plan on buying the Cingular 3125 this weekend (the refurbished model for $29.99), however I'd like to consult the experts (that would be anyone other than myself) prior to my purchase.
I feel like it's a good fit for me, but my knowledge of PPC's and smartphones is limited. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy this phone? I was originally planning on the 8525 when it was down at $99.99 for a couple days, however that's no longer an option. That, and I think I'd prefer a flip phone and a dedicated keypad.
There were a couple things I didn't truly find in any reviews.
First off, how rugged is the phone?
Is the ringer loud enough/is vibration sufficient? My current phone is barely audible in slightly loud places, and I sometimes hear it vibrate before I feel it.
Upon opening for a phone call, does it pick up right away? I can't stand phones that lag through this process.
If there is a phone out there that is (unlikely) $100 or so that would suit me better , please let me know.
The only things I truly look for in a phone are call quality, customization (ringtones, themes, etc...), decent battery life, Wi-fi is a huge plus, but not mandatory. I don't use any extraneous services.
Any input or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
for 29.99 i would take my chances. I just bought a brand new one for 199 off ebay and it had problems. so i sent it back and they promptly replaced it with a new one. worse part is now i have to pay again to simunlock it but oh well atleast the phone functions right. it does have a weak speaker for the ring it is not very loud and it answers right away for me.
Thanks for the input.
Oh and one more thing. Is there a fast one/two button way to activate a silent and/or vibrate mode?

yep... more or less. clicking on the operator id opens the comm manager, #5 enables/disables the ringer (puts it into "meeting mode")...
mostly thats unnecessary. if you have an appointment, set your profile to "automatic" and set the appointment (in your calendar) so that your status is busy.
automatic sets you to "meeting" mode every time your calendar status is "busy"
beyond that... 29.99? you crazy? is that a contract? better have a backup phone then. contracts are never good... if you brick your phone on a 3 yr contract because you were modding it (or whatever)... you still have a 3 yr contract. with or without the phone.
look into it. weigh your options. don't go headlong into something that will financially rape you.

I still have my phone right now. I could easily keep it as a back up. I've never heard bad reports of refurb phones from Cingular/AT&T. It's $29.99 due to the 2 year extension contract on top of it being a refurbished model. That's how I've gotten my phones in the past.
edit:
I forgot to mention that I most likely wouldn't be hacking/modding it, unless there is something that really makes a big difference.
well then. it's a good phone. i have the 3100. i intended on buying the 3125, but somehow missed that it wasn't the 3125 in the auction (i bought mine on ebay)..
my real challenges were to rid myself of the cingular store (something which you might want to keep), re-do settings for MMS (as i'm not on cingular's network), and beyond that, my only beef is the BT Restrictions on the phone...
the only allowed incoming BT connection is for wireless modem.
i'd like to fix it... but meh. if you don't do much with BT, then you're okay. A2DP headsets seem to work though... but some registry mods are needed to do full stereo, and high quality A2DP... nothing serious, just some value modding.
if you're okay with the contract, go for it. nearly no mods are needed for this phone to kick some serious butt. i've honestly never had a phone that gave me as much detailed information about stuff as this one... it seems to satisfy my need for unnecessary information. haha.
I say DONT buy... FLip phones suck.
Thanks for the advice. I'll probably purchase it tomorrow if not sooner. I don't use any bluetooth at the moment, and can't see myself using it in the next 2 years.
edit:
Is that the only reason Madcap? In that case, I'll stick with the phone.
could also check out a sda which adds wifi and infared in a candy bar package. I own that phone too and really they all the same just different form factors.

Too bad the SDA isn't made for Cingular/AT&T. It looks similar to the 2125, however that doesn't have wifi either.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Alright, I have one more question.
I read somewhere that the newest Cingular ROM doesn't allow you to install 3rd party apps. I also read that there's a way to unlock it. Could someone lead me in the right direction?
Thanks!
yes, there is a way to make application unlock via registry editing and SDA Application Unlock utility

Would I just have to follow the first two steps according to this post?
So from what I understand, installing the latest 3125 ROM disallows any use of 3rd party software apps without doing this?

Yes, your device will be fully unlocked, and you will be able to flash any startrek cingular/qtek/imate/dopod roms

No, some apps will work
And this lock is in any official rom
Alright, thanks for the tips. I understand what Application Unlock does, and I understand SIM unlock, but what exactly does CID Unlock do? Is that what allows custom ROM's to be installed?
CID unlock is allows you to flash with any vendor's rom (any of qtek 8500, cingular 3125, dopod s300 and i-mate Smartflip roms)
ha! Yes offspring, thats the only reason.. lol

Thanks for all of the help. It's greatly appreciated. I doubt I'll need anything other than Application Unlock, but at least I know for future reference.
Hopefully I'll get around to purchasing tonight.
No further questions at this point in time. Thanks to everyone who contributed their thoughts/opinions/ideas.
1. Application unlock your phone using regeditstg and do the following :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 1001 = 2 -->Change the value data from 2 to 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 1005 = 16 --> Change the value data from 16 to 40
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 1017 = 128 --> Change the value data from 128 to 144
Reboot the phone
2. Run SDA_ApplicationUnlock tool. Reboot the phone after it finishes.

Oh, and I may as well ask out of curiosity: What is superCID? I couldn't find a 'definition' per say. Just a place saying it allows the installation of ROM's.

hey all! i'm currently waiting for my 3125 to make it to my doorstep (it shall be my backup until i get my 8125 apart and determine which lcd screen i need to buy to fix it -- don't let truck tailgates come down on your lcd screen, you'll get angry...)
so, what roms are doing what for people?
so far, i've been able to dig up scattered around the net (which is funny, considering the m$ note on the ftp about no devices on the market have wm5 offered, so its proprietary now, take down and destroy....):
ruu_star100_1.02.251.1_qtekeur_ship_r2.exe (think its the buggy one, missed calls and all that)
ruu_star100_2.4.502.0_02.45.30_cws_ship.exe (htc support's current (illegal?) offering for the cingular/at&t customers)
ruu_star100_3.6.251.0_02.67.30_qtekeur_ship.exe...
I'm sort of in the same situation as I have a 3125 on the way to replace my 8125...
I'm going to use the "RUU_STAR100_3.6.251.0_02.67.30_QtekEUR_Ship" ROM as it seems to be the latest available and I was able to pull it off the FTP last week.
I'd still be interested to know what everybody else is running though
i'm also using the "RUU_STAR100_3.6.251.0_02.67.30_QtekEUR_Ship" ROM and don't have any problem, stability, not too slow...
yeah im using the Qtek8500 ROm RUU_STAR100_3.6.251.0_02.67.30_QtekEUR_Ship
On my Cingular 3215.
This is the only clam shell WM5 device in the world yet it gets no love. No one doing new ROMS or anything. I have the HTC Wizard and I swear they come out with new ROM every week, sometimes more expecially with the whole WM6 ROms.
hmmm. i've been scanning through both xda and spv forums to figure out the best way to go about cooking up a rom. christ, xda is a mess to look through, but so far i think maimach's tools may do the trick. at least the thread seems to give hope :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294489
as to how to pull the nk.nbf or nb out of the rom.exe, i'm retarded (extract it with winrar someone said... ), this thread could work too...- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=238945
i've been looking into this for a few days, and my head is starting to hurt (should go medicate...)
anyone else have any suggestions as to how to go about?

Well, the app unlock went fine and the 'RUU_STAR100_3.6.251.0...' ROM went on without any probs (didn't bother to SIM unlock as I'm a Cingy customer anyway)
Would love to get my hands on a copy of ClearVue though as this ROM doesn't seem to have it and the Cingular one did.
Anybody??
BTW, love this phone!
I've answered my own question.... plenty of apps here, including ClearVue and some other cool stuff:

I can't seem to find this ROM on the ftp server anymore

Can someone please uplaod this again, I want to put it on my new 3125 sexy phone )

Thanks a bunch donshula, I am downloading it right now.
So, what are the differences between the 3.6.251.0_02.67.30 and the 2.4.502.0_02.45.30 one? And why are so many people using the 3.6.251.0_02.67.30 one instead?
I've got the 2.4.502.0_02.45.30 as from Cingular and can't say I've had problems...
Would installing the 3.6.251.0_02.67.30 one cause issues because it has some different hardware?

No probs, I have the Cingular base ROM as well if you ever need to go back to it.
thelostsoul - I wouldn't be able to tell you the differences between the ROM's but generally, the newer the ROM, the more bug fixes and better stability is my guess. I do it anyway because I love to fiddle !
A downside of the non-carrier ROM's is that they don't always have the same software; 3.6 doesn't have XpressMail and the ClearVue suite for example.
Oh and no issues putting the 3.6 ROM on a Cingy 3125. They share the same base hardware components from what I understand. A few of us have done it without issue (if you follow the instructions properly) and the 3125's actually have more ROM than the Qtek 8500 so no worries on space.
how come I am getting invalid vender error when I am trying to install that firmware? I ran surreal networks app utility and rebooted.
Doesn't sound like you went through the full application unlock process. I followed the guide in this post to the letter (#2) and it worked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=292936
One thing I found was that when doing the regedits in step 1, your initial registry entries might not be the same as his - doesn't matter, just make sure you change them to the values damird lists.
Also for step 3, the file you want to download is the one at this link:
http://nah6.com/~itsme/download/itsutils.zip
- get one of the later ones and you have to start adding arguements to the pdocread command.
Hope this helps
thanks! it worked and now I am running the Qtek Rom which seems less buggy and a little more responsive. Have not experienced the missed call problem either. Now all I need is some good software to fine tune this puppy! maybe some good ring tones!!!!

No idea, there's a wm6 beta floating about for the S620/Dash but I've not heard anything about the 3125. I'd love to get my hands on a proper copy...

the sim unlocker i was thinking of errors out (the spv-tornado one). if you don't want to call cingular to get it unlocked (free?) or pay the 20-40 bucks US that various companies charge, all i can suggest is to keep a look out on spv-developers.com. some helpful **** there (that's the site that we can thank for our cid-unlock). i don't know how responsive they are in questions, considering i haven't been able to post there ever (i registered, but i never got my permissions to post topics enabled for some reason)....

Hi Guys,
i am new to flashing Ameo/Advantage/Athena, but am an experianced hardware "tweaker" with Pc's so am not too afraid to mess about a little, having bricked a few GFX cards in my past not too mention a few stern looks for the mrs when doing so
I need some help, i have just got an Ameo a standard T-mob one, brought 2nd hand, was formatted to factory standard when i got it
Want a hand i have heard from a few in the know that black touch is the way to go?
Is there a simple process to follow, i have looked at the threads above but they are over 50 pages long!?
perhaps just a simple 1.2.3.4... something to point me in the right direction?
Any help i am grateful for, Many thanks in advance
Pete
Step 1 Download Olipro Unlocker
Step 2 Run all 3 steps to unlock your phone comnpletely
Step3 Download APTouch Dual
Step 4 Run
Step 5 Enjoy!
Good instructions
I did mine last week with no problems. The only thing I would add is;
1. Make sure all your devices Ameo and laptop have a full charge before starting. Loosing power half way is a good way to get a brick.
2. Read, reread and print out the steps so that you can tick them off as you go along.
3. Keep wife, dog, kids etc. out of the way. You do not want to be distracted.
Good luck and enjoy your vastly improved device.
Thanks alot
i just have one further query, what is this radio 1.5 i have spotted being mentioned, i assume its not like fm radio and is actually reffering the the comms unit in the device, for gps or calls?
is this something i should consider or be thinking about?
Many Thanks
Pete

Did mine with no probs too. It is worth adding to the list:
- take out any memory cards
- stop any other programs running after boot - ie firewall/virus checker
It really is improved. The radio mentioned is the internal one. Flash the earlier version of the ROM which includes Radio v1.5, then follow with the later version which doesn't include it
Take a deep breath .....

My 8525 is on the way - to arrive tomorrow, knock on wood.
I've been all over Google and the wikis researching this thing, but haven't come up with a clear answer for my situation. So any experience would help!
I will NOT be using this as my primary phone - I have a handy dandy 3125 that works fine in that department. In fact, unless something breaks, I doubt the 8525 will ever see a SIM card.
For me the 8525 will be a fun gadget - a wifi PDA with a keyboard. So if I want to sit out on the porch and chat on Yahoo messenger, I can. Or look up eBay auctions and surf myspace and youtube.
All via wifi.
(I'll also play a bit of chess and other games, should I ever find the software, but that's another story).
But from what I've read, the yahoo messenger disappears with the WM6 upgrade, and the "new" version doesn't work over wifi. So is the upgrade worth it? Will the web be better with WM6? Is there an alternate way to use Yahoo Messenger over wifi that won't cost any extra, but will work just as well?
I understand I gain stability and some aesthetic enhancements, but is WM5 that bad for my intents and purposes? Or does WM6 actually fit the bill better, albeit with a few tweaks?

Yes you should up grade you are better off and if you use Aim,MSN,Yahoo try use thing this program http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=slick Its great and free!
Windows Mobile 5 was fully functional, with a few quirks, but 6 has quirks too. Do a google search on WM5 WM6 differences and see if anything listed would be beneficial to you. I know there were upgrades to IE in the WM6 upgrade, but if you are going to be doing lots of web browsing, you will probable want to upgrade your browser to Opera, Opera mini, Netfront or etc.anyway which negates that benefit.
Bottom line is, try it as it comes and research any shortcomings you find to see if an upgrade would help.
well......its not necessary, but then, why rob urself of the fun you can have flashing roms?

I have a Cingular 3125 I just bought to tide me by, since my 8525 took a dump, and would like to upgrade to WM6.1. I ran the application unlock program and went through the supercid process, but is there a way to check if the process/application was successful? I didn't receive any alert saying such. BTW: I'm using a PC with Vista Home Premium.
What is the most stable WM6.1 ROM available for this phone? I know there have been bluetooth issues with some, which I can't have, since I use my phone a lot while driving (work related).
Also, I'm really not put off too much by the WM5 OS, but I'd really like to have the threaded SMS back. Is there a stand alone application that would allow me to add this to WM5 (if I end up keeping it)?

I'm surprised there hasn't been any reply to your post in the months since . . .
Yes, there is a little program you can run to verify application unlock - I can't remember the name of it or find it ATM.

I followed the steps in the first and third stickies: Application Unlock first, then CID Unlock. Particularly I followed the clear advice in post #12 of that thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1124770&postcount=12
Here's an amusing aside, RE: the build quality of this phone. I had loaned mine to my daughter's boyfriend, he set it on a table and lay down to take a nap. He heard it vibrating and ringing as a call came in, looked up and saw it vibrate itself right off the table and fall toward the floor. But at the exact spot it fell, there happened to be a glass full of water stationed - the phone fell kerplunk! right into the glass of water. He grabbed it out, pulled out the battery and SIM card, dried it the best he could, let it sit a couple hours, then reassembled. It works perfectly!
I have Erofich's 6.1 installed on that phone, this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=374397
But I think I'm going to give DJ's 6.5.3 a try soon.

Glad I could help. I've been away for awhile, it's good to be back.
Yeah, that 6.5 looks like not yet ready for prime time.
Hi Guys and Girls,
First of all I apologize for starting a new thread about this, I have put a search in both on Google and XDA and there is one possible solution I just need some clarification being a noobie!
I purchased Co Pilot 8 quite a while back when I was on stock rom but have since tried several different roms each time reinstalling my co pilot. After each install I obviously have had to reactivate it, last week after trying yet another rom my Co Pilot wouldn't activate. I contacted Co Pilot support and after several emails the outcome was that I had activated/de-activated several times and had reached my limit. They have allowed me to activate one last time(their words) but I know I'm not going to stick with the same rom so unless there is a way around this my purchase appears useless, especially as I have bought text to speech and live services as well!
During my search I came across a possible solution to back up your activation key which is licp8 in the windows directory. As I only have one activation left I need to get this right so if someone could clarify this for me I would be most grateful. What I need to know is if I now re-activate Co Pilot and then back up the above file (licp8) to my storage card, when I put a new rom on my phone if I then copy my backed up activation code from my storage card back to the windows directory, does this mean my Co Pilot will be activated without having to do so over the internet as this will obviously register with ALK Technologies?
Does that make sense,(no pun intended).
Sorry about the long winded explanation.
Thank you for any help
No offers?? Ah well I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet the next time I load a new rom.
can you not install copilot on the sd card so you won't have to activate every time you flash?

That kind of works, but only in the sense that you don't have to type all of the ridiculous long numbers for activatio again. It will remember all of your keys and your email/account settings.
I don't know how often I have re-activated, probably about 20 times, haven't had a problem since. But if you have a valid license and it has always been on the same phone (as in you didn't share the code) then how can they justify not re-activating the product. I like CoPilot, but if they try a stunt like that I will never buy it again.

Thanks to both of you for the reply.
I do install it to my SD card and like smackmac says that only partly works.
@smackmac
I have probably activated less than you so I don't understand that one?
In one of the emails they sent me, they have limited activation to protect against software piracy, I can understand that so I asked them why don't they link the software to the IMEI number but they said they can't do that. The software is fully legal and I have only ever had it installed on my current phone,(HD2). I did give them an in depth explanation of the reason why I had activated/deactivated but I got the impression they didnt believe me, I even had to scan my email receipt and send as an attachment as proof of purchase. Like I said I will try that possible solution in my original post the next time I put a new Rom on the phone and ill update the post to let everyone know whether it worked or not.
Thanks again for your response.

I just learned from CoPilot Support/ALK Technologies today, that I have also reached this "activation limit", that I was totally unaware of. I would warn anyone considering CoPilot not to buy if they ROM flash often. Or even if the hard reset often. Or even if they just think they'll have to reinstall the software often.
After I contacted CoPilot Tech Support/ALK Technologies about receiving an "error 1027" when trying to activate the product after a recent ROM Update, I got the following response:
Dear Darnell,
Thank you for contacting CoPilot Technical Support.
Unfortunately the reason why you are receiving error 1027 and why you are no longer able to continue activating CoPilot is our Activation server has seen that you have reached the maximum permitted activation limit for a product.
Looking at your product key code you have activated 24 times.
Unfortunately there is nothing further I can do to unlock your Product Key Code to allow for further activations as this falls under excessive uses of activation.
You can resolve this by purchasing a new version of CoPilot but if you continue to activate to the same level that you have already been doing then your new key will also be locked out after a period of time when you reach the maximum limit.

So basically, they have my money and I have no CoPilot.
I have never had an issue of this sort with any other product on my HD2. I guess the magic number for me was 24. I had no idea reinstalling to the same device multiple times was an issue for them. This is an issue anyone considering CoPilot needs to be made aware of. Ticks me off when we who follow the rules and pay the money are treated like the bad guy . For crying out loud, we paying customers are the ones that DO keep them in business! Trying to use the product honestly now has me locked out.
So I fired off a response to the support ticket with a complaint of how I dislike them having my money while they fail to offer me service. My issue has now been fowarded to "Senior Technicians" and they are supposed to be getting back with me soon.
If they ever grant me activation again, I'm going STRAIGHT TO THE ANDROID VERSION. The Android version does not have to be reactivated as often, since when upgrading Android ports all the information is saved and comes right back through using the old data.img file or a utility like Titanium Backup. HD2 owners using an Android port have confirmed this for me. (See here and here.)

Hi Darnell,
Interesting post, I more or less got the same response, basically you are not going to be allowed to activate a product you paid for because they think you are making pirate copies. I have just downloaded the latest version of the rom I use and I will be taking the plunge tomorrow(19/11/10)
I sent a PM to Appelflap, who originally offered the solution, asking could he/she confirm it works and this is the response I got, [That's right. If you backup licp8.dat and copy it back to windows directory before copilot is started for the first time on the new rom, it will start as a activated copy.]
I hope Appelflap doesn't mind me posting the quote that was sent to me via PM.
So I hope it works otherwise I'll be left with a deactivated copy of Co-Pilot I'll let you know.
By the way I hope they grant you another activation, good luck.
Regards
Eddy
Activation
Hi All,
Just to update what happened.
I have installed and updated my rom and did exactly as Appelflap suggested and .................................wait for it..............it worked!
So just to recap, if you have like myself, purchased co pilot and flashed numerous roms, you will eventually reach an activation limit and ALK Technologies won't allow you to keep activating indefinitely.
So if you go into the windows directory, copy licp8.dat to your storage card, and then after you have reinstalled co pilot, copy the licp8.dat file back into the windows directory BEFORE you open co pilot, that is important! This worked 100% for me and also my text to speech and live services I purchased are also working.
I take no credit for this, all the thanks and appreciation go to Appelflap
I hope this can be of benefit to other members of the community, and lets hope no-one from ALK Technologies reads the forums and comes up with a fix!
Regards
Eddy
Yesterday, I got this message from ALK Tech.
Dear Darnell,
Thank you for contacting CoPilot Technical Support.
Please try activating your CoPilot again with the same product key.
Please be advised that it is imperative, before you upgrade or change the rom or the device, that you deactivate your licenses yourself in the future in:
Menu --> Settings --> Licencing --> DEACTIVATE
If you have any further questions, or feel that this incident has not been resolved to your satisfaction, please do not hesitate to bring this to our attention.

I was able to reactivate CoPilot Maps. But I am still unable to activate the Premium Live Services/Live Traffic that I also paid for. So I've asked them to assist me with activating that also.
A couple of things that may help
I've yet to hit limit and I think it is for the following:
I use XDA_UC (Energy version) to install the Laurentius26 CAB and also to copy licp8 (contains your license key and saves typing out on the ABCDE keyboard) over to windows which avoids the need to reactivate the license. Then CP8 when run does do not go thru the activation loop.
Clearly for this to work you need a purchased license. I've have changed ROM's several dozen times without issue using this method. I hope this helps.

I was able to successfully activate Premium Live Services/Live Traffic tonight. I think I was mistakenly using my old password when trying to activate that one. Since the old password was likely stored, but I had changed the PW when trying to initially figure out why I could not activate.
I sure hope more CoPilot owners see this thread before they run into any issues.
might sound simple but wont a backup or system image saved to your sd card restore your setting/co-pilot etc? ive done this with my phone a handful of timeswhen updating roms, never with anything fully registered but demo versions of apps and sofware ive installed are still within the preview time limit.
this way you can restore your prefered rom with your copilot and settings without having to activate it time and time again. may be totally wrong as ive never used co pilot but unless anyone says otherwise its gotta be worth a try?

Not usually good practice to restore a backup from an old ROM to a new one. It's usually best to only save and copy over just the nessesary files. Such as the one already mentioned.
To restore the full system image would also introduce any potential bugs that might have been in the old ROM's system files.
But we're trying to maintain what we paid for, not extending a trial.
