Here's my problem, I don't have Vista installed on my desktop, only XP. It is a work PC and I don't see that changing any time soon.
So I am constrained to use MS Active Sync 4.5. It syncs contacts, tasks and calender ok.
Problem is that I rely on Notes on my 7501 heavily at work and can not sync them to my desktop.
Tech support at my job is no help, they just say that my 7501 is not supported. What a bunch of idiots - go back to sleep....
I have heard of Mobsync that will force sync'ing of files to the PC. Has anyone done this with Notes?
And if so, what are the settings and file locations that you used to sync notes to the desktop???

PS I find this super frustrating that I have migrated from an old Sony Clie running Palm OS and syncing of notes was automatic. Now I migrate to WM6 and it won't sync to it's OWN Microcrap desktop OS, WTF????

Yes I tried that. When I click the notes icon to change the sync options, it tells me that:
"No settings are required for Notes Syncronization. If enabled, the next time you connect your device, all notes on your Device and in Outlook Notes will be syncronized."
So my active sync is enabled for notes sync, but it is not doing that.
The only other thing I can think of is that there is a special location in the 7501 file folders for Notes location. But where should I locate the notes?

Store the notes in the documents folder on the Athena, not on the microdrive or miniSD.

On WM6, I have 'My Documents' and 'Documents and Settings'. My notes are located in 'My Documents' and won't transfer over.
So I take it that you can't have subfolders within the Documents Folder?

notes are only synced if they are in root of "My Documents". Subfolders are NOT supported.
If you are using your notes heavily, think of using "OneNote" instead of the standard Outlook notes. OneNote is perfect ...

Yes I can, but when I copy the notes to my desktop, the pwi file can not be opened.
Perhaps there is a manual import feature in Desktop Outlook or I could somehow get a viewer or file converter for those pwi files.
Any pointers?

Here's an update, I was able to transfer my notes by syncing all my files to the desktop. Now I have a bunch of *.pwi files that I need to somehow port to my Outlook application. Anyone have an idea how to do that?
Barring that, anyone know of a good pwi file viewer??? Word works, sort of...
Sorry, been off sometime. I just don't get it, cause if you see your notes in this folder, they should be synced to Outlook automatically.

I've been having the same problem. It looks like WM6 does not convert files when copying from PDA to PC or synching with Desktop (WM5 is doing that just fine). However I do synchronize with Outlook notes directly and it works. I can read my synchronized notes from within Outlook 2003. Another way to read PDA notes is with MS Office OneNote. You go Tools-Copy from Pocket PC and you get all your notes in OneNote. You can then send a note to Word or Outlook as an e-mail.

It's part of MS Office 2003 like Excel, Visio, etc. Unfortunately I have no experience with MS Outlook 2002 and PDA collaboration. I presume Outlook 2002 does not yet have Notes as a separate subfunction.

Outlook 2002 supports notes, but I remember some issues with syncing them. As far as I'm on Outlook 2007 now and didn't use 2002 for years it's hard to remember.
OneNote is part of 2003 and 2007, but only in Professional Version. As a regurlary user of OneNote I absolutely recommend it. It's way better than standard Outlook Notes.
WM6 Notes to Outlook ActiveSync Fix
I just had the same problem using WM6 and Outlook 2007. Notes created in Outlook on my PC synced to WM6, but notes created under WM6 did not sync to Outlook on my PC.
I determined through testing that ActiveSync assumes that Notes to be synchronized from WM6 to Outlook will be in Main memory. I fixed the problem as follows:
1) Start the "Notes" program under WM6.
2) Click "Menu"
3) Click "Options"
4) Click the down-arrow to the right of the "Save to" text box.
5) Select "Main memory"
6) Click "Ok"
Then, create a new test Note under WM6. Synchronize via ActiveSync and you find the test Note you created under WM6 in Outlook 2007.
Syncing Notes with Outlook Versions prior to Outlook2003 never worked for me.
I had severeal WM Devices but syncing the Notes never worked until i got Outlook2003.
Syncing the files manually is of no use because ActiveSync has no converter for them, so you only get the raw .pwi files on your Desktop.
There are ways to import them manually to Outlook but i haven't found a method to automate this.
This seems to be a General Problem. I found a Microsoft KB Articel concenrning this Problem. Maybe it will be of some use for you.

Best thing you can do is upgrading to a newer MS Office Version, neither a New OS nor an other WM Device will solve your Problem.

I am using windows xp with Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 sp1.
Since upgrading to w2k5 I can't sync my notes. Contacts and Calendar, Media are ok.
If I transfer my notes form the desktop to a sync file it transfers all the notes to the pocket pc but I can't open the files in pocket pc because they have a files ext .msg and there seems no application to open them with the pocket pc.
Has anyone had the same problem - can anyone help me to fix it.
Thats one of the reasons I went back to the 2003, I could only sync through the infrared. Other than that you have to go through so much trial and errors; disabiling firewalls and antispy software due to the fact that the w5k treats your PPC as network device........

Try deleting the partnership from both ends i.e from the device so also from teh computer or just run a repair of the ActiveSync.

After 5 months of trying I have finally been able to get my wife's outlook calendar to sync with her HTC Touch Pro.
PROBLEM:
All we wanted was to sync the info on her Hotmail (er, Windows Live) account (mail, contacts, calendar) with her new 'smart' phone. Everything being Microsoft, this should be a piece of cake, right? Her Palm Pilot was able to do this 15 years ago, so one wouldn't think this operation to be too complex. Ohh, but enter Microsoft cluster**** world.
Windows Live does over the air sync mail and contacts quite nicely with Windows Mobile, no complaints there. Calendar, however, must only be for those wussy iPhone types. So, the solution is to buy Outlook (we got 2007), install it on a desktop. Then download Outlook connector, and sync Outlook with Windows Live. Now Outlook can be used to view Hotmail. We should be golden, right, with this unfortunate solution of having to cable-sync the calendar. Nope.
Every time the phone gets plugged in, WMDC gives the error 'Desktop Synchronization cannot be completed. Reduce your mailbox size by deleting some items and folders and try again Support Code 85010017'. Also, there was the problem of Outlook randomly locking up, and requiring a reboot to get it going again. My wife gave up trying to use Outlook, and just logged onto the website to do anything. It took a while to realize that it was after she plugged her phone in was when Outlook took a hiatus.
So, after researching, I tried all the tricks, and nothing worked. I was starting with a fresh install of Windows Mobile 6.5.x and a fresh install of Windows 7, so legacy data wasn't the problem, though I repetetivly tried completely removing all partnerships, removing WMDC and it's registry values, etc. I reduced my ost file from 200mb to 20mb (meg, not gig, how could it have a problem with that), to no avail. There wasn't even have a pst file.
SOLUTION:
When setting up a partnership using Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC), when selecting Calendar, 'Sync Settings' would become active. From that, changing from 'past 1 month' to 'past 2 weeks' eliminated the 85010017 error code, and supposedly the sync was successful.
It just didn't appear to be successful, since no appointments were transferred to the phone. However, I found that if I created a new appointment, it would sync over (both ways). This led me to find that if I edited and saveD the existing appointments, it would sync over. Apparrently, it just doesn't want to sync existing events. So after resaving all her existing events, we now have success. And Outlook doesn't freeze anymore.
ALTERNATIVE:
So, one way to avoid all this hassle would have been to use Google Calendar Sync to sync her data to a Google Calandar, then add an ActiveSync Exchange serve to the Google Calandar, which would have provided over the air syncing of her calendar to her phone. So the chain would have been Windows Live> Outlook Connector> Outlook> Google Calendar Sync> Google Calendar> ActiveSync/Exchange Server on the phone> Outlook Mobile. Simple as can be, right? I did try this, and it does work well.
But my thinking was this was too much room for error, I would be better doing it the proper way and just syncing her phone directly to the computer with a cable and all Microsoft software. Silly me, I should have known that third parties can make more reliable use of Microsoft data than Microsoft can.
BONUS:
The one nice thing is I found a way around Windows Mobile limitation of only one calendar, sort of.
I wanted to have multiple calendars in Outlook, so we could have shared items on one (like bulk trash pickup) that both of us would see (I also have a WM phone, an HTC Touch Diamond), but I wouldn't have to look at all her daily events, and I wouldn't have to see hers.
So, the work around for two calendars is to use catagories in her Outlook, with one being a 'Shared' category. When she syncs her phone she gets all items on her phone, and can even create new events on her phone with categories. So she is good. Then I installed gSyncit on the desktop, which allows us to sync specific categories to a Google calendar. One calendar is free, and to do additional calendars would mean paying the $14.95 for the program, which I don't think was bad, even though I stuck with the one free one. Then, gSyncit is again installed on my work computer, again having those Google calendar events go to a Shared category. Then, all those events are nicely sync'd over the companies exchange server to my phone, again in categories.
Another way to get multiple calendars to sync with the phone would have been to use almost all of these same steps, but with OggSync replacing gSyncit and ActiveSync, but at $30 per year, there is no way I am going to pay that much for conveluted patch. Which brings me to the moral of the story:
DO NOT BUY A WINDOWS MOBILE PHONE:
It is the worst excuse for an operating system that I have seen since DOS. There is no way Microsoft should be allowing it to exist. It does more harm for them than good.
I've suffered through over a decade of God-awful Microsoft Word. I've suffered through the Vista. But WM is the elephant that broke the camel's back. After an eternity of being a Windows promoter, I am now telling everyone to avoid Microsoft at all costs. As the guy that everyone goes to for advice, I am now sending them to Apple, be it Mac or iPhone. Or Android. Or simply forgo the technology, you'll be better off without the extreme amount of maintenance it requires to keep Windows going.

Also, I agree. Did you know that live mail accounts (hotmail) don't support ActiveSync, M$'s own syncing protocol? GMAIL as well as most other email services support it, but microsoft's biggest email service does not.

I would like to quit MS too now - made a bad mistake to buy an new Touch Pro 2. After trying to sync with Blackberry Client for windows, which took me 2 days but was successful in the end - I tried to sync with 2 Windows XP Computers via ActiveSync 4.5. One works, the other doesn't - no chance. Can't see why - with the HTC Kaiser this worked - not really without problems over the years - but mostly it worked.
Now the trial to sync just contacts and calendar ends with "85010017" and I see afterwards that 1600 contacs are synconized but about 20 empty contacts are added and the caledar did only sncronize the Birthdays - so nothing, because the birthdays will come from the calendar.
Don't know how to go on..

Please help! im dying without my contacts. this is what happened (typing with my 8525 so bare with me)
I had black satin on my 8525. I have done a couple rom changes and the contact list always resynced automatically everytime.
I had to reformat my computer but I had saved my WM_James_Klafe2 file.
a few days ago I reflashed my 8525 with a new rom and when I synced the phone to the laptop it created a new phone name and folder WM_Owner
when I try to sync contacts through activsync it says I need to disconnect phone, install outlook, run outlook and resync.
I haven't lost anything from reformatting have I? I had a microsoft office 2000 cd but its all scratched and won't install. I downloaded a trial version of student office but it didn't help my situation at all. and I didn't even see outlook in the office student 2007 edition anyway.

just now, with my 8525 disconnected from my laptop. I changed the name on my 8525 from WM_Owner to WM_James_Klafe2 which is what my cell was before and that's the name on the folder on my pc that is holding all my info.

Try this,
Copy the contents of you sync folder to another folder.
delete the partnership and create a new one.
sync with the new partnership.
then copy all the contents that you saved to that folder.
This worked for me....I sync between two laptops and do this quite often.

still no luck. I tried it and it didn't change anything. still no contacts added to my phone.
I think it has something to do with me not having microsoft outlook installed to my computer but I don't know why it matters. I never used outlook anyway.
on activesync, "contacts" are not one of the "information types" that are sync'ed. On Activesync, when I go to Tools, Options, then try to select Contacts as an item to sync I get a message that says "Activesync cannot synchronize Email, Calander, Contacts, Tasks, and notes, because outlook is not installed on Windows PC. To Sync Email, Calander, Contacts, Tasks, and notes do the following: Disconnect the device, Install and run outlook, and then reconnect the device and try again."
I have outlook express on my pc but that doesn't seem to be good enough.

Sorry dude - Contacts are stored within a file called "outlook.pst" on your PC and not in the syncronised folder(there is sometimes a backup file too called backup.pst), this is a file for Microsoft Outlook NOT Outlook express and it usually lives somewhere around c:/docs & settings/<profilename>/local settings/application data/outlook (varies a tad from OS to OS)
If you still have this file or a backup *somewhere* on your PC (use your search facility) and can re-install Outlook - then you will be able to import this file into Outlook and your contacts from the outlook.pst file will resync to your phone.
If you have deleted (or no longer have) this file on your PC - and you have not used something like PIMbackup on your Hermes then sorry - they've gone.
For information - Outlook contacts is a 2-way sync - ie, scrub your phone and it gets them from the PC. Scrub your PC and it gets them from your phone. Scrub both and they're gone for good unless you've made a backup of either one or the other. Same goes for email, calendar and tasks.

I have same problem withy my trinity!
I constantlly get this message

Outlook is runing and i have imported contacts in it,but still this message!
I use win xp sp3,outlook express 6,activesync 4.5
On trinity is wm6.1 elegance!
I did soft and hard reset,reinstall activesync but still same situation!
When i open activesync on the trinity and go menu i can click only on Add Server Source,Connections and Connect via Bluetooth.
Options,Schedule and Status are greyed and can`t click on them!

To fix this you need to go to settings>system>About>device ID. You can change the name of your ppc that way (or you can for the Hermes).

sorry to invade this topic but i have a similar problem in the reversed form however .
i recently formatted my PC but being the idiot i am, i forgot to backup the *.pst file from the Outlook folder. now i still have all my contacts in my phone, but i wanted to know how to transfer them over to Outlook.
Resync to pc after installing outlook. When it asks if you wish to combine or replace items on pc pick combine. If you pic replace it will replace with all the contacts in outlook (none) and unless you have pim backup or another backup of your contacts you will loose everything...

I haven't use outlook notes but I'm pretty sure you will be able to sync it to your live account. Once you done this its accessible on your phone.

Yes, I'm aware that there are numerous alternative tools to use for notes. However I have a ton of data in Outlook Notes that I have used for a very long time. Works over all my various computers and, up till now, on my mobiles as well. One would have thought Microsoft, if anyone, would ahve had support for it...

There is no native support for these in WP7.
Notes were poorly supported even in Windows Mobile. For example they did not sync wirelessly over ActiveSync.

Yes, this is true. Did synch over Activesync via cable though. And Notes still sit there in Outlook 2010, fairly prominently. Also the iPhone syncronizes them perfectly... Oh well. Thanks anyway for the replys.

My WM touch 3G is no longer function properly, I plan to switch to Sony Experia S. It comes a problem that how all my data stored in WM transfer to android, especially appointments and call log in my old WM transfer to the new android. I usually backup my WM calendar data by PIM backup and the backup file is .csa. Originally I plan to import this .csa file to Outlook 2010, then export to Business Calendar Apps or Gmail. However I find this .csa file cannot be recognized by Outlook. Could anyone kindly help to guide me how to export my WM calendar and import to Business Calendar Apps or Gmail? I would prefer to export it to Business Calendar Apps as I don't want to store my personal calendar in google server. I am also looking for how to transfer the call lot too, I try to keep it as possible. I appreciate for your kindly help. Thank you.

If you use Bitpim then I believe you have the option to save certain things as Excel files. Would that work for you?

Thank you for your suggestion. However, I use the build-in calendar in Windows Mobile 6.1. I think it is probably not Bitpim. I googled many times and searched XDA threads that still don't know how to export the WM calendar to android.
Try looking up Bitpim. It's a program for data transfer and media exchange. The website will tell you if it's compatible with your phone. It has a few options for exporting from devices.
