i have bought a second hand mda vario 2 (=tmobile branded htc hermes). when i connect a usb cable, it charges fine, but i believe the usb connector is broken. it charges fine, if you put the cable under a certain angle. leaving aside this problem which is impossible to fix, it is not able to connect through activesync!!!!! so i cannot update the rom. the device is simunlocked, but not cid unlocked. i tried to download Des' SSPL program and ran it while renaming the wm6 rom to HERMIMG.nbh (off course i extracted both executables, after which i ended up with RUU_signed.nbh (93 mb). i renamed this to HERMIMG.nbh). so i put the des sspl program and the renamed image on a format sd card and ran des sspl. but off course, it did not work... since it is not supercid, it cannot upgrade from sd card.
so does anyone have a solution to supercid the device without using the usb cable to activesync (bluetooth activesync maybe???) so i can do a sd flash?
maybe someone else has a solution to upgrade both the rom (os) and radio rom??
any help is appreciated.
i've tried mtty ==> but usb is not recognized at all, so that didn't do me any good
can i apply hard-spl over a bluetooth connection?
same question for removing the cidlock, can i remove the cidlock with an bluetooth active sync connection?
i also tried another computer, different usb cables, reinstalled activesync several times, tried as4.2 and 4.5 on the different computers... the usb cable only charges the unit, it is not recognized as a usb device.
i also tried several hard reset with and without letting the extended (tmobile) rom install.
problem fixed
MDA Vario does not sync with PC
Hi,
I am also trying to update my ROM for MDA Vario II. How were you able to fix the problem. Can you pls. let me know.
Thanks,
install rom from SD card
1. get a Micro Sd card under 2Gb ..
2. Format sd card Fat 32.
3.rename the rom file to HERMIMG.nbh.
4.copy the HERMIMG.nbh to Microsd card root.
5.Put back the Micro Sd card to the phone.
6.Hold ok button + power button and push the reset button by styles pen.
this will automatically start to install the rom.
PLEASE be sure you all are hardspled before do any any any any any any upgrade or rom change!!!!
Yep, What + Que PPC said, only in caps....
don't have Hard SPL, you're probably looking at a brick unless you're REALLY lucky and the rom is compatible with your carrier (NOT LIKELY).

As a result of a car accident I lost the ability to connect my Himalaya using the USB cradle. The data port on the phones board was completely smashed. I had it repaired only to allow my xdaII to recharge from it's power adapter but not from the cradle, that's how I lost all usb functionality.
Now I've previously read some methods and instructions on how to upgrade the xdaII using some modified rom files which are then stored on a SD-Card and then installed from the bootloader without the use of a USB connection.
Can anyone here tell me exactly how this is done ? What are the steps needed to convert the available rom files on this site to a format that would work from the sd-card ? I would also like to know, whether this method supports upgrading the radio and the extended rom in addition to the windows rom ?
Your help and assistance on this matter will be highly appreciated. As I can no longer upgrade my phone using the usb method. I will be depending on your help you guys. I've got faith in u, so don't let me down.
I also want to know it! Please help!!
Find another xda2 that has a working USB connection, insert your SD card in it, and use the attached file to copy the rom to your sd card. Then place the sd card in your xda2 go to boot loader mode and that is it.
The only problem is that whenever you want to change the rom version you will have to use another xda2 that has a working usb to transfere the rom image on your sd card.
I've been having some usb problems with my Hermes for a while now:
- it nearly always can't charge with standalone usb chargers now - it will only charge by connecting to computer.
- connection issues with WMDC 6.1. It connects at first but after a few minutes, the activesync connection is lost [it still charges though]. I have Vista ultimate x64. I've been using bluetooth to sync anyway.
I've just thought, oh well, I'm sure the problem will go away when I finally update my rom next time. But now I can't do this, because of this USB problem. The usb connection is lost [orange led light turns off] as soon as the flashing utlity puts the phone in bootloader mode [first time I tried this today, windows was installing a "htc usb sync" driver at this point...weird]. As a result of this I get an "update error" 284 and I have to reset battery and start all over.
Should I try activesync 4.5? A different vista x64 driver (can't find any), or a different OS? I hope there's nothing seriously wrong with my herme's USB port! Can't see why, I've looked after it well.
Thanks for your help! I don't want to be stuck in WM6.0 forever!
If you have an xp machine, you could try activesync 4.5. Does your usb port look okay as far as connections to the motherboard? No cracked solder joints?
Oh yeah...I managed to keep the usb connection in by holding it in place with my finger, rather nervously, while the rom updated!
I had a good look at the Kaiser forum where they're having problems with the usb port's weird htc shape, and loose connections...I think it's the same with my Hermes.
It still can't charge with regular chargers though. Only laptop.
Mate, you can use the sd card method to update your rom if you've flashed Hard SPL. MUCH SAFER than "holding it in place with my finger".... I believe that could be a way to bricksville...
I'm assuming, of course, you HAVE Hard SPL on your Hermes...
1. Format sd card fat32 and copy the .nbh file of the rom onto it. Rename it to "hermimg.nbh.
2. Insert sd card into hermes & go to bootloader - OK button, power button and reset with stylus, hold in until tri-colour screen comes up.
3. Follow the prompts.
If it doesn't do anything then either you've not formatted the sd card fat32 or have renamed the .nbh file wrong. Make sure you have at least 50 % battery power and DON'T reset in the middle of a flash...
Easy as pie...
Cheers...

Thanks for that quick guide to SD card flashing! I've decided I'll do that method for the much riskier radio upgrade.
Yep, I've got Olipro 2.10. Cheers!
IGNORE BELOW I GOT IT RESOLVED. On the phone itself the female usb connector had 2 of the 5 "connectors" entangled with each other inside. I am going to be careful from now when I plug any usb cables in it
Hi All
I cannot seem to sync my phone using any USB cable anymore (ERROR [260]: CONNECTION). It charges fine, but the computer does not see the phone at all. I have tried different cables, different computers, but no luck. I have Actisync 4.5 installed. When I try to reinstall the ROM also (Power + OK button) I am getting "serial" showing at the bottom of the screen instead of "USB". Any ideas what is causing this? The phone is working great otherwise. Every single feature works except USB . Note Well: The phone is NOT stuck on BootLoader screen, it boots up fine.
Is it possible it's the USB connector on the phone is damaged? But as I said it does charge the phone when connected to the computer.
PS I also did a "clear storage" to default the phone back to the current ROM I have installed and also I have checked "usb to pc" enabled on the phone.

Thanks.
If you have this problem, try the SD card method....
(assuming the Hermes has Hard SPL v7 installed)
1. Format sd card FAT32. Copy .nbh file of the rom you want on and rename to hermimg.nbh .
2. Insert SD card into Hermes and reset to bootloader.
3. Assuming all things are right, follow prompts...

Hi Ultramag
Hmm, sorry it does not work for me, as previsouly discussed, it got me stuck on bootloader with 'Serial' below.
Hi,
I would very high appreciate if someone in this community could help me with the Hard-SPL upgrade problem. I read a lot of threads in this forum and in other forums. I tried to follow several solutions but I get stuck all time during the upgrade to hard spl 2.10 with an error 260.
I connected my mobile via USB cable. WMGC 6.1 is running on my PC --> synchronizing has finished. Then I started Ruuwraper on my vista PC --> after I answered yes to upgrade to hard-spl 2.10 --> on my mobile appeared enterBL.exe and was asking me if I should run it Y/N. Then I replied with yes --> afterwards it appeared the bootloader
IPL-SSPL by Desc
SPL-1.09ds
but then there is no reaction for about half a minute. Afterwards it appears on the PC "error 260" (I should check if the cable is connected via USB)
However I see that USB appears on the bootloader screen. In my opinion it should work, but didn't !
if I go into bootloader I read following :
IPL --> 1.01
SPL --> 1.04
IMG 1.23.707.4
My desktop OS --> vista 64
windows mobile center --> V6.1.6965
Can it be that I need a special USB cable for my HTC ?
Or ????
Thanks in advance for your help.
I know that there is a problem with using 64bit OS versions, so if you have another computer you can use that isn't 64bit to check whether it is that or not.
Good luck
Thanks for your fast reply.
I tried on my other computer (laptop installed windows XP SP3). However I failed with the same problem.
When i first tried to flash my device i had a problem of it not connecting to the boot loader, it seemed that every time the phone changed to boot loader the computer would no longer recognize it and it wouldn't be synced with the computer. i think i managed to get around this problem by putting my phone into boot loader (ok button + power + reset button) and then connecting it for some reason the computer would then recognize it and it would work. I cant remember what it was i was flashing it may have been hard-spl
Hope this helps, Good luck
Edit: I found this information on completely different forum that came from HTC about what to do
HTC's Answer: I was instructed to disconnect and soft-reset. Then I was instructed to go to Settings>System>Memory>Running programs and Stop All. Including Active Sync. We then reconnected the phone. Established a sync and ran the utility. Active Sync still goes away and you get the falling tone of a Disconnect. Ignore it and proceed as if everything is connected. Bang Zoom. 10 minutes later I'm loading software. *dance*

this is what is meant to happen as i flashed a new rom the other day on vista and windows had to find the device again and reconnect i think after this small pause it worked again.
Ok, I tried. Following result :
I see that Serial goes to USB but then no reaction. I can see on the WMDC 6.1 --> it shows still "not connected".
I found one article below and tried as well but it starts not automatecly from the bootloader too :
HERMIMG.nbh on a FAT32 filesystem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/files/hermes_sd_flashing.jpg
1. If you want to install any ROM (NBH) which is not supplied by your operator or the CID does not match then you will need to SuperCID your device. This can be easily done by installing HardSPL and should be the first thing done if doing any upgrading.
2. Empty (erase the contents) of your 2 gig or smaller non-SHDC MicroSD card (the Hermes bootloader does not support SDHC) from the Windows Mobile file explorer or format it from your computer using a card reader (in some cases format doesn't work) make sure it's formated in FAT32 format. As a precaution you might want to check the MicroSD card for file errors. i.e (Properties->Tools->Error Checking)
3. Extract the .NBH file from your preferred ROM upgrade: In windows use winrar (right click) to extract the contents of the exe file. In Linux / MacOS use cabextract.
4. Rename the .NBH file to HERMIMG.nbh and copy it to the root folder of your microSD card.
5. With microSD card inserted on the phone, start the bootloader (hold Ok button on left side and POWER button at same time and stick with stylus in RESET on bottom).
6. You should see a screen similar to the one pictured on the left (What lines appear depends on what is included in the nbh. If the file doesn't include bootloader code, that line will not appear, and so on.) Confirm flashing on screen by pressing the power button.
7. Flashing might hang after some time but this is normal. Just wait. Complete flash takes about 30 minutes, so check your battery or connect to charger before the flashing process starts.
8. After you get the confirmation that the upgrade is complete, softreset your device.
So you tried flashing using the sd card method and still no result?
yes
and now I tried your suggestion with stop running programs activsync and calender.
Also the same --> error 260
I would've hoped that one of the methods would work, i take it the device syncs up fine normally to device center and you can access all your files etc?
This is the thread i quoted from there is some more information about the problem i don't know whether it will help though.
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=42389&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
yes I can synchronize and I can see all the file via vista explorer.
I take it your planning to flash a newer rom onto your hermes, are you running the stock rom that came with it at the moment?
I just ran the hard-spl ruuwrapper.exe on my computer with out my phone connected this gave me the 260 error so it is most probably something to do with the phone connecting whilst in boot loader mode, did you click yes to run any program that it asked you to on the phone?
I did read some where that resetting the pc might work but i dont know whether it will make a difference considering you've already tried it on another computer.
Good luck

Actually I bought the HTC in Taiwan (CHT is the brand on the front) in a shop. At the beginning there was a chinese OS and the seller in the shop changed it to the english version.

yes, it appered enterBL.exe on my mobile. Then I answered with Y.

yes, on my laptop (windows xp). The same problem -->error 260. There is only one difference between my desktop and my laptop. activsync (with windows xp) drops during using the program RUUWraper which WMDC 6.1 (with vista) does not.
Good luck

i dont really know what to suggest, what happened when you tried flashing it using the sd card method?
Tried already. Not working too.
program starts not automatically with .nbh file from the SD card when I went into bootloader.
you could try the sd card method again, following the instructions Here to the letter and see how it goes because that should bypass the problem of it not connecting and should work.

I tried again to flash via SD card but my mobile does not recognize the .nbh file. The mobile stays in bootloader mode and does nothing.
Edit :
maybe I made something wrong ? I used the .nbh file from the Hard-SPL. Is this ok ?
i have attached the .nbh file from hard-spl. renamed to what it is needed to be to work. reformat the memory card so that it is blank and in fat32 format, put this file on it and follow the rest of the steps.

Thanks. My SD card is already formatted with FAT32. Is it really necessary to format it again ? I deleted only the files on the SD card and tried it already but it did not work.
If yes to format FAT32 again, do you have also a program for FAT32 formating which is running on vista ?
I downloaded fat32format already but I have to find an adapter to put it into the PC to format. Or is there another possibility to format ?
From the PC I did not find a possibility to access to format directly on my mobile.
there is a formatter on vista but the memory card would have to be connected to the pc, when i brought my micro sd card it came with an adapter to an sd card so i can use it in a usb card reader or the one on the front of my tower.
other wise i dont know if you can format it this way whilst it is connected to the phone.

ye im afraid so i cant think of any other ways that might get your device to flash, you could always wait to see if one of the more senior members replies although you may have to wait until tomorrow.
Hello,
i have a brand Vodafone IT Titan with:
OS: 7.10.8107.79
firmware: 166.2200.20501.165
radio: 16.23.06.10_16.32.00.23U
bootloader: 2.5.160015.3(137079)
i wanted to upload the 2.05 eu rom so i have downloaded this rom: http://www.filefactory.com/file/1ybq4xqcazyp/n/IMG_Eternity_HTC_Europe_2.05.401 and obtained the file named 'IMG_Eternity_HTC_Europe_2.05.401.01_Radio_Signed_16.23.06.10_16.32.00.23_ETERNITY_RELEASE.nbh' (yes it has the apex included in the file, vary strange for me) that is 419.982 KB
i have renamed the file in ETERIMG.nbh.
i have downloaded goldcardtool and goldcard.img.
i have formatted the microSD in fat32.
i have copied ETERIMg.nbh in the microSD.
i have patched the microSD with goldcardtool and goldcard.img
i have connected the Y usb cable to the Titan, the microSD card reader and the PC.
i have booted the Titan in USB HOST mode but it always show me "Entering USB Mode". Upload does not begin at all.
So, what am i doing wrong ???
Please guys help me!!!!

Looks likes that your Y cable is fine, with your phone showing "entering usb mode". This leaves your gold card as possibly the main culprit. In other threads, some had the same issue and managed to flash their phone by trying other type of microsd card and card reader. I used a kingston 2gb microsd card and multicard reader. I managed to debrand my att titan to european 2.05 rom (see the thread I started on this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1693334&page=2)
Thanks for the replay.
I don't know if the cable is ok. I bought it on ebay:
http://www.ebay.it/itm/260747604735?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
It is a normal Y cable used for external HardDisk when a single usb port is not enought for powering the device.
I connected the miniUSB port to my card reader.
I connected the dataUSB port to my phone (using a famale-famale adapter)
I connected the powerUSB port to my pc.
The strange thing is that when i plug the phone (phone is already turned on)
then the phone fell i had connecet it and the led become red.
Also the led on the card reader is Turned on, meaning that it is turned on.
But when i restar the phone and push vol- and camera going in USB Host mode,
the led on the card reader is desapeared, so i thing it is turned off.
The phone is now waiting in USB Host mode.
So i disconnect and reconnect the power usb cablo form the pc, and so the card reader turned on again. But the upload does not begin.
Do you thing that there is something strange ?
may be i miss something on doing the gold card (wrong image, wrong name) or samething like that?
I have already tried with 4 different memory card but (512MB MMC, 1GB microSD, 8 GB microSD and 1GB SD card) the result is the same.
I have a question, after downloading the
'IMG_Eternity_HTC_Europe_2.05.401.01_Radio_Signed_16.23.06.10_16.32.00.23_ETERNITY_RELEASE.nbh'
file
I have to extract RUU_Sigbned.nbh and rename it in ETERIMG.NBH
or jusy keep the whole file and rename it in ETERIMG.NBH ???
If i have to exctract RUU_Signed, how can i do that??
I have the same question as nyonik.
After getting to the USB Mode, I plug in the phone the card reader turns on and off and it goes straight back to ther SPL screen and freezes there. When I unplug the device the word "serial" appears on the screen. I've havent been able to find someone on here describing a similiar scenerio. I've tried several different types of media and they all do the same thing.
@nyonik- you copy the euro rom 2.05 to microsdcard rename it to ETERIMG.nbh then make it a goldcard.
@jonesk001- that also happened to me, what u need to do when it goes back to spl mode, unplugged phone "serial" appears, then restart phone by pressing power button for few secs when it start to boot hold down vol- and camera buttons this will boot ur phone to "usb mode" screen, at this point plug it back to Y cable. Your phone should proceed with flashing. If it again kick back to spl mode repeat the steps i described. Goodluck.

Thanks Habnzrot for tips. Finally got everything to work. Amazing enough I used WinXP to format and make the gold card instead on Win7 and it worked, using the same setup that was previously didn't work.

Good to hear that you now managed to flash your phone Enjoy custom rom (s)!
use 1gb msd card. before I used a 4gb card it has the same issue.
