Guys, just ONE SIMPLE QUESTION:
Which ROM is FASTER: Crystal V5.0 (5.1, I presume they are identical in terms of speed) or ShadoW 1.0?
Please answer this question. I don't care about anything but SPEED!!!
Because I need to flash later today!!!
Many thanks to all cookers!
it's a personal preference.. I go with Crystal V5.1
No, no, that's what I'm saying! SPEED can't be personal preference! SPEED is measurable! OK, one rom might be better than the other based on one's criteria, but only one can be faster!
i.e. which one open faster windows folder? And how long does it take, actually? Benchmarks please!!!

I think this thread is not supposed to be here..
First of all .. It is not abot competition between hma4 and claudyfa.
They just upload what they have made. In order to give the people here a new fresh ROM.
As I said.. A new fresh ROM.
It is not about competition.. Want to try which one is suitable for you.. flash it and test it by your self.
You can feel the difference between them.
thanks

Crystal V5.1 is faster than Crystal V5 because of the Different OEMDrivers.
The best thing you can do is try both Shadow and Crystal and see for yourself.
The time it takes to open the windows folder depends to how many files are inside the windows folder!! so this is not a good measure of speed.
You can use SPB BenchMark to compare them.
There's no point in just using Windows folder.
My Dopod is using Mysterious 1.1.
Windows takes less than 4 seconds.
Bootup, on the other hand, takes for ever (more than 1 and a half minute)
As well... It is also sluggish. I'm flashing Crystal today.

Well. it's differant every time u flash a same rom. It means if u use Crystal 5.1 or any other rom, it will give u differant results every time u flash it. It's quiet strange, but that's ur "Prophet". It's behaviour is differant with every flash. So there is no problem with choosing a rom. When u are satisfied with a rom, just give it a try. There is no question at all about performance. Because in a month "They" are giving u a new rom. So what's the big deal? Are u going to question every time, which one is faster, which is not? Be brave mann. Just give it a try. And u don't need to ask any one. U simply get it.
I hope this satisfies ur question.

Abosulutely true. How I wish there is a utility that you can backup all the personal apps and can be restored either in the ROMS. Is there a utility like that? That will only backup the dll and everything that your every personal application has and then safe to restore on any ROM (of course all wm6)?
After lots of thinking and reaing I finally flashed Shadow Clean. I haven't really any experience fromCrystal V.5.1, but, all I can say for the "Light" Shadow is tha it's blazing fast! My poor Prophet has been transformed to an new device! Now there is no reason to replace it with a faster device! Everything runs so smoothly!
Thanks to all cookers out there!!!

Well, I lived with Mysterious the beauty for a long while..
Reboot took only 40s in my case all the long period i used it!
@all:
As for "the span of windows-folder-opening", I am personally convinced that it is SIGNIFICANTLY important. Not only does it take CONSIDERABLY less time to open the folder, it SUBSTANTIALLY shortens the waiting time whenever an application related to files in the windows folder is applied.
Let's put it this way--An F1 car is not only powerful but also LIGHT-WEIGHTING. Contrarily, a powerful monster without light-weighting is A TRUCK....
When we talk about SPEED, the best argument is NEITHER figures, benchmarks, NOR any other ENDUSER-FORMIDABLE JARGONS. Rather, the very users' EXPERIENCE tells everything!
ShadoW_Touch_Edition, for instance, is UNDOUBTEDLY an art of the nation, a real fast thing,--taking barely more than 1/4 round of the wait-cursor to open the windows folder, sacrificing nothing luxurious such as HTC Ablum, HTC Action, HTC RandomAccess, HTC Dialpad, HTC CommManager and HTC LargeMenu and you named it, hundreds of its graphics PAINSTAKINGLY re-located into the ext_rom while merely fewer than 1500 files kept in the windows folder--an Ace Ferrari inviting you to experience what the definition of SPEED should be....
All rom-masters and their arts are highly appreciated for sure. Only let's face it when SPEED is concerned--the span to open the windows folder requires not only the build version of the core, but also dedication, genius and creativity!
The gibberish above is my very personal idea. No time-wasting war of spit is expected.
Best,
yes
I think it's a great thing to compare.
no one wants to think less of any of the great roms or their cookers.
we all greatly appreciate the hard efforts and time they put into this thing.
It has become one of my hobbies to change my rom every now and then.
but it's good to know the weak and strong points of each rom from other users opinion.
by the way the shadow clean edition was very fast and really clean !
but after some days it has become a little slow for me.
now I'm using touch edition to see what happens with it...
I think we should considerthe roms in 2 stages :
first when they are new and exactley after flashing
second would be after some usage and programs installing and how they react to different utilities in more days after flashing
one more thing I should add:
I think the volume of sms and call ring tones in shadow clean are much higher than my old wm5.
don't know if that's possible or not but I just feel it.
and about the touch edition I can't still tell.

Please check the requirements before you install!!
I'm new to developing on the Pocket PC platform and decided that I wanted to give it a shot. I figured that the best way to learn would be game, so here's my first attempt. This game is based off the New Super Mario Brothers mini-game called Whack-A-Monty (from the Nintendo DS). All of the graphics are from the original game; I have no intention of selling or making a profit from this game so I don't feel bad using their graphics. This is just a learning experience that I thought I'd share with everyone.
Requirements:
In this version (0.1), I have only included support for Pocket PC 320x240 or 240x240 resolutions. Also, I have only tested this on WM5 & WM6 emulators. This will only work on phones with a touchscreen.
This game was written in C# and thus requires .NET CF 2.0.
Again, this is my first attempt at game for Windows Mobile, so this is mostly a learning experience. Please don't crucify me for posting a game here, I'll be moving on to applications next. Let me know what you think!
I haven't tried the cab yet, but if I may I'd like to see the source code, specifically how you did the animation because I've been struggling with that.

This is awesome. Thanks heaps!
Yes this works well and reminds me of the game ratsplat - it needs sound to make it complete - keep up the good work!
VERY VERY cool game lol
Thank you!!!
Would there be any way to enable to input a name with a high score?

Not much animation in this game actually, but I do plan on releasing the code here. I need to do some tidying up first. I found the 'Programming with cheese' articles on MSDN very helpful for starting.
As for adding sound, .NET CF 2.0 has very limited support playing sounds. As far as I could find, there's no *easy* method for mixing sounds, or playing more than one sound at the same time. I need to do some more research on sound...

Hmm... I thought about this originally. I might bring it back.
Overall, I'm more interested in seeing if anyone has had problems installing the game (shortcuts work / in correct place), gameplay issues (hits aren't recorded, slow play, ...), stability issues, etc
Not working...
Hi there, the screenshots of your game look pretty cool. Unfortunately, I cannot play it, it's not working.
I own a Dell X51v with WM 6 (football edition A3, release RTM) but haven't installed Microsoft Net Framework (I was told that it is included in WM6). Whenever I start the game, only 25 percent of the game is visible in the upper left corner of my screen, the rest of the game's screen is somehow 'cut off' and my today screen or whatever is visible.
What a petty...
Do you guys know what to do about it? I guess I have already tried to install Netframework, but WM6 refuses to do so if I remember correctly.
Thanks for your help,
7
It installs and runs on my Universal (WM6), but unfortunately the VGA screen makes it unplayable (you can only see the top left quarter of the game area).
If you feel like expanding your learning experience, support for VGA devices would be very nice! And why not include a landscape mode too

Im still playing the game, its working great!! Any updates?
This game is great and worked excellent on my MWG Atom Life until I flashed to medkid's 6.1 ROM, now when I install it messes with some of the fonts (e.g. on the screen alignment screen and on commanager using poorlyduck's vista theme). The game itself kinda works ok on 6.1 but the stylus isn't very accurate for some reason, often missing some while hitting others. My girlfriend was devastated when I told her she couldn't play whack-a-monty anymore! ;] thanks for a great game otherwise though!
hey, looks great, I'd like to play it on my VGA device too
it reminds me that great flash game tontie.
unfortunately I have yet to see a pda able to play flash games flawlessly
Hey, thanks for sharing! I like it!!
Greetings, Melle.
i tried to use it on my palm treo pro and a part of the screen is cut off...I dont know what the prob is.
very cool and a lot of fun! Also, a very old thread!!

Good game for killing more boredom
Thankyou.

I am here from the future to announce the Anti-Anti-AP ROM. It supports features not even imagined yet by HTC engineers, will destroy the Anti-AP ROM (even the german edition) and restore AP4 to its rightful place in the Universe as the ROM that changed the world.
Let me put it this way, if AP4 is not released, the world becomes a very dark and different place within 10 years. It all starts with the launch of a spy satellite running Windows Mobile and the Anti-AP ROM. A bug in a hacked up vueflo causes the thing to veer off course, utlimately resulting in a giant asteroid heading right for HTC headquarters in Taiwan... I'll spare you the details, suffice to say the Anti-AP rom will spell the end of our freedom, living in the shadows, hunted for sport by cyborgs designed by rogue scientists using the iPhone SDK 9.0. Ever try too outrun something with neutron lasers, nuclear hoverjets and Google Maps? You won't get far.
Immediately all must install:
Commander Olipro Athena Hard SPL variant 9 brainwave unlock thought pattern mechanism (alpha release)
PK AP ver 1.E+47 ROM
which includes support for:
Bluetooth 8.1
Playstation 9
VueFlo Quantum Edition
Slide2Unlock .99 (some things never change)
It can even run a ripped DVD of 'Big Mamas House' at close to an acceptable frame rate using CorePlayer 12 by BetaGeezer on the Imageon holochip (with acceleration turned off of course)
I leave you with this thumb drive based on the USB9 specification. Do it before it's too late...

Believe me, EXCALIBUR (T-Mobile DASH, HTC S620) with the new Kavana's WM 6.1 ROM, opera MINI 4, External BT GPS and few tweaks is a STRONG competitor
I know, it seems foolish, but full kb, one hand use, landscape screen with the new sliding panel media interface... small. It is a young, sexy, lady compared with a famous porn actress: hard to chose every evening....

lol. tell u the truth though. i like the new version of the excalibur but everytime i touch a non touch screen phone.... my fingers goes for the screen anyway. its too weard. i might stray soon from htc and get the LG Vu from AT&T because of the mediaflo tv service coming soon. thats unless i get word of a htc phone that does the tv service too
no worries. i'll probably find the service overrated, will have the phone, and return it the next day if i do keep it then it'll be just for the tv service and will use athena and polaris for rest. i do highly doubt i'll keep it though. im too used to htc phones
I have and love a Kaiser. Right now I have a Dutty Rom on it and love it as I commute, on a train, about 3 hours a day.
Anyway, I made a bet (6 pack of beer) that I can use an Athena for a week instead of the Kaiser. [We have one that sits unused in our office]. I have the Black Rom on it and wasn't overly excited when I made the change.
What should I install to ease my life and win my bet?
Use TCMP for videos, the Athena has a nice big screen. Both the NetFront pre release and Opera leaked alphas are good for browsing the internet. I would recommend using RealVGA if you would like to really utilize the large screen, 96 DPI is awesome. Compared to the Kaiser the Athena has a bigger screen, more storage and at least on paper a faster processor. I personally use a software keyboard and ditch the magnetic one to reduce to size of the Athena.
does the RealVGA thing work on the kaiser also?

No, Kaiser isn't a VGA device and if it were, the 400MHz Qualcom would struggle. It would probably be dog slow.
what a stupid bet
Well ok, I no longer have an Athena and I got rid of my TyTn 2 after a week so perhaps it's not my place to comment..
BUT WHAT THE HELL KIND OF BET IS THIS????
Fine, the Athena is a bit big, but what the hell is your problem with applications? IT'S THE SAME OPERATING SYSTEM so it shouldn't be much of a hardship unless you're an absolute doink.
Perhaps a better challenge might have been to live with a Motorola StarTAC for a week....or even a Nokia 6210.

Hmmmm not so sure. Maligned as it might be I can't help but love the old N95 classic. I've got an 8gb card for it and it's the most satisfying phone I've ever used....still. it even has embedded flash support and an accelerometer so the screen rotates automatically when i turn the phone.
Unfortunately there's nothing in the Windows Mobile world to touch it yet - I'm very much a multimedia guy and there's nothing comes close to the carl zeiss optics of the N95, the 30fps video, the flash support, the hardware acceleration, the huge array of multimedia applications and (finally) proper GPS support with Garmin XT or Route66.
The nearest phone to the N95 in the windows mobile world is probably the TyTn 2 and i'll never go back to that again:it's an inferior toy in comparison.
I'd wager a bet you can't list five things i'd do on a Kaser that I can't do on an N95 (aside from the obvious outlook calender issue which is not an issue for someone like me who doesn't use outlook)
one day i'll be back though no doubt.

leoni1980 maybe you could be more specific. What do you do with your Kaiser and why do you like it? Why weren't you happy with the black rom on the Athena? Why is there an expectation of hardship/w Athena?
You said that there was a train commute. So . . .your thinking entertainment? To "ease your life,"; since we know nothing about you or your life that's a hard one. Don't you think?
In general: Windows mobile devices are all-in-one mobile devices that do alot of things ok/good. In my opinion, they rarely do anything specificly the best. Read e-books--likely the kindle does it better. Listen to music--buy an ipod. Surf the net--desktop or laptops are more powerful. And so on.
So you need to figure what it is you like to do. Then evaluate whether windows mobile fits your needs. Then tweak the Athena in that direction with hardware and/or software.
Seems alot of work for one week.
If I had a three hour commute, I'd surf the one-day deal sites, & winmobile/news sites. I'd read e-books, listen to music and do writing. Maybe listen to sleepy music/set my alarm and take a nap. I don't even use the phone side, rarely watch movies, have no use for a pim.
Another guy would want to chat on the phone, and watch tv. Still another guy would want to sms, play games . . .
Keep track of your time, finances, diet, movie collection, appointments . . . Facebook, chatrooms, twitter, look at porn, read the Bible . . .
I mean . . . you can do all kinds of things.

Not until someone makes the drivers for our device. Hard to say if that will happen or not.
how about now?
This was a topic of discussion in my office the other day. The smartphone industry is moving so fast that it's impossible to keep up (unless you have lots of money to spare).
When the manufacturers introduce a new device they also introduce more memory intensive software. Almost to MAXOUT all of the new power. The problem is, from a hardware/software engineering perspective, with devices such as the TP it seems that went a little too far. That is why you are hearing people complaining about their devices hanging. An example of a device that had a GUI designed to be 80% intensive of the hardware is the iPhone. This leaves room to grow until you get your next device.
This is the reason TouchFLO 3D/2D are slow and freeze up. They were designed to MAX out specific device specs that the Titan doesn't have and the TP barely passes the benchmark... When you buy a new PC do you load the most process intensive apps on it to the point where it is choking up? No. You leave room to grow. What people fail to realize is that these devices have been pretty much fully loaded from day 1. You can only REALLY run flawlessly some apps on the Titan. Anything too intense will result is freezing and choppy behaviour.

Because there are different sides of each ROM which can work better or worse, I decided not to do in this way as to make decidion by only two options, good or bad ROM, but split them into sectors, so you could vote for every ROM for it's better and worse sides.
Give it from 1 to 5 points for each side of the each ROM.

2) SPEED
3) GENERAL PERFORMANCE
3) GOOD LOOKING
4) CONVIENENCE IN USING
5) USEFULLINESS OF INCLUDED APPS
Thanks for helping people.
This is by far the best 'current' ROM I've tried...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614158
It is the WM 6.5.5 ROM by lennie. It really revived my 7501. I already loved the fact it was the only 5" screen out there but throwing 6.5 on there really got people looking over my shoulder to see what I was playing with.
1) STABILITY-RELIABILITY D, of the ROMs I tried, the most stable!)
2) SPEED D, though there is the occasional drag, this is the fastest, most stable 6.5 ROM I've tried.)
3) GENERAL PERFORMANCE (, Advantage may not be made for 6.5 but lennie's was by far the fastest of the ones I tried.)
3) GOOD LOOKING (A! Sweet! Totally felt like I had a new phone!!)
4) CONVENIENCE IN USING D, 6.5 is the greatest improvement of WM software MS finally got right. Being able to customize the interface with a little XML experience is a serious plus.)
5) USEFULNESS OF INCLUDED APPS D, though I added OliveTree and MS Reader right away! This phone is a great paperback replacer!!)
Trying Again
Hey Thanks for this thread! I am always looking for the 'best' ROM because eventually it seems they all go belly-up after a few months. I think I need a new battery as well now. (sigh)
Most recently, I had been using the R6.1 MiChY ROM 20931, which served me well enough but has become very sluggish with severe battery drain. I had also purchased SPB Software's Mobile Shell, so I have been using that, but there is a new version so who knows if it is better.
But I am now going to try this one listed above (I think I tried it before but we'll see) and I will let you know what I think. 2 minutes left to download! I am hoping the weird buzzing is a function of OS corruption.
But if not I may take my x7501 apart in an attempt to fix it, now that I picked up the correct tool to open it up. I will have to look to see if someone else did this to guide me.
michy wm6.1 20931
1.) michy wm6.1 R0 clean (20931)
2.) michy wm6.1 2.14Dlight
For me, I find these 2 ROMS fast, stable and functioning well.
I was tempted to think about htc hd2 for a while but i realized that the 5 inches screen of athena still the best for my use.
No way with MiChy 1.60F ROM after 2months of daily use - this is a very poor version for reception/signal strength is very unstable, while most interfaces and utilities including BT are fine, I could not reliably use my cooked T-Mobile AMEO handset at all. Stay well clear from this ROM. I will now painstakingly upgrade to another, will now try the recommended above.
Feedback on its way for this
Michy wm6.1 r0 clean
Try Michy's wm6.1 R0 clean first if you haven't done so yet. That Rom was a hit with many many satisfied users. I didn't find anything that wasn't functioning. WIFI, Bluetooth, 3G connections, GPS, GPRS(phone), all pass the test. The ROM is speedy enough (unless of course you install softwares that leave clutters in your of files windows folder and bloat up your registry or add resident programs that run all the time in the background) Battery life was quite good too. Internet browsing with the latest mini opera was great and if you know how to set up, you will also enjoy youtube streaming from m.youtube.com.
Michy's wm6.1 r2.14D light is another great rom but this rom is for those who like to have very minimum programs installed, not even microsoft word. I used it for a while and love it. But now I am back to michy's wm6.1 R0 clean.
I read a lot of good things about lennie's wm6.5 latest rom but i think there are still things to improve on. I am also doubtful about how battery drainage
for wm6.5 can be better than wm6.1 because i am under the impression that wm6.5 uses a lot of RAM. So, until i am sure that the wm6.5 is able to offer me better battery life or at least almost the same when compared to wm6.1, i will wait before installing the wm6.5 rom. But i like to encourage lennie to keep up the good work in cooking wm6.5 roms for the HTC x7500. As for the wm6.5 interface, i will agree that it does have something new to offer but right now i am happy enough with spb plus because it is feature rich not to mention the ability to start up in safemode should i need to uninstall some stubborn programs.
I think the HTC x7500 is still a great device even though HTC HD2 has now become very popular.
I have tried virtually all the roms available here and my opinion is that the best is a factory rom. Everuting works, no problems
