Any idea how do i turn off the screen while playing music in order to conserve battery life?
thanks
tap the power button once?
no, if you do that the device goes into standby, and the playback stops.
i just found the solution, under the button assignment menu in windows media player there is a "toggle screen" option
so i assigned it to "hold left button" so now if i hold the left button for a while the screen goes off but music keeps playing
If you are using HTC audio, you can press power button and the screen goes black.

hey thats cool! but i dont use htc's audio player because its not that easy to search for a particular song. with wmp i just need to type in the name in "now playing" view
MortPlayer lets you turn the screen off too
In Windows Media Player, goto options and in the buttons tab, assign a button to turn off screen. Its there!

Does anyone know of an mp3 player that has a hold function where tapping the screen won't work or a player that will still work after my sx56 is turned off. Also I bought the cheap earbud headphones off AT&T's website. Is there anyway to map the answer phone button to have other functions (such as next track).
I asked a very similar question in these forums recently, and got the perfect answer: WMP already allows you to lock the screen.
In the player, go to Tools -> Settings -> Buttons and map 'Screen toggle' to one of your hardware buttons. (I mapped it to the 'Action' button - the centre of the cursor.) Now, when I press this button while WMP is playing, the screen is turned off and locked.
Hope this helps.

mapping the button on my earpiece
Is there anyway I can map the answer call button on my earpiece to goto the next track. I keep my sx56 in my pocket and it is annoying to have to reach in to hit the next track. Also when I am wearing the earbuds it would be nice to have the answer call button a mappable button. Thanks.
great, but not quite there
it's a great improvement, which does indeed disable the screen, but not the buttons.
I'd just like some kind of lock that disables both the screen and the keys, a la nokia phones.
cheers

Is it possible to listen to music on the XDA with the screen off? ie just like when your talking on the phone and the screen is off but the speaker is still active.
If I turn the phone off with the power button the music stops, also the auto power off after time X doesn't kick in when Win Media Player is running.
Having the screen on all the time (even with the back light off) really drains the battery.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
If you're using Windows Media Player, goto Tools, Settings, and then Buttons. You'll be able to map Screen Toggle to a key which will turn the screen on/off with the press of a button.

Hi!
Yes, you can do it too with other players like GSPlayer and Mort Player.
These players come with preset timer to off your screen to save battery power and at the same time allows you to listen to music.
resco audio thingy will do the same job, as will betaplayer.
be sure to enable the feature through options.
Also im sure there are many more programs that will do this for you.
(even just a backlight plug-in?)
w0rd.
Pocket Music Player 3 has this feature also. It's one of the better players I've found thus far.
screensaver
phm power toys has a app that will turn off the display
http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/PowerToys/
Heres another little freeware app that I have been using for a while - gives an option on the Today screen to turn off display, and pressing one of the units buttons turns it back on.
Also gives on screen bar graph of the battery capacity (the main function of the program i think) plus main memory and expansion memory capacity/usage, plus a soft reset, ability to turn off auto power off and a few other things i cantremember.....
There has been a lot of notes from people who have installed and cant uninstall (although why you would want to is beyond me..) but if you go into settings/today/items/ select power check then options, there is all the configuration settings plus instructions on how to uninstall.
Cheers, Dave.
EDIT.... Might help if i pasted in the link huh... http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/powercheck.shtml
EDIT2... Worth mentioning that the default button to fire back up the screen is Button 1, which on the XDA2 is the top right button (calendar). Don't do what I did and try each of the buttons - couldnt work out what button 5 was so I selected it as the option to turn back on the unit - guess what - there is no button 5 on the XDA2.... soft reset wouldn't bring it back up, had to hard reset in the end... Please learn from my mistakes!!!
hi, coming off an ipod touch i am pretty much used to change volume without unlocking the screen.
is it possible to do it on the vibrant?
why does it lock those buttons while the screen is off?
It doesn't lock the buttons. I change volume all the time while listening to Pandora with the screen off.
using the default music player it does not change the volume, only bring up the lockscreen
I use Winamp. In the options for Winamp, there is a "lockscreen" option so that when you come out of standby, the winamp player controls will pop up. This way you don't have to unlock the rest of your phone before changing songs/etc.
Also, with winamp, you can use volume buttons while screen is off.

just installed winamp and i am getting the same result, using vibrant with stock ji6 firmware.
pressing the volume buttons only brings up the lockscreen
got it... it was beucase of my custom lockscreen program lockbot.
will delete it now.
Looking for a way to turn one of the hardware buttons into a PLAY/PAUSE button while the screen is off. Any ideas on how this can be done? I have a rooted X10a w/2.1

i have thought of this, when the screen is locked i the home button should be play/pause, the menu back and the backkey next song.
I bought Music PlayerPro - the Volume Up/Down keys skip next/previous, or hold for volume up/down. (You can reverse this behaviour in the app too).
This works when the screen is locked btw.
I would love pause too... but the volume down does a similar job.
Have a look here:

I think it was released the same day you asked, as well!
is there a way to use the volume buttons to switch between tracks? like in my old k800 when i longpressed a volume button it played the next or the previous track. it would be nice and it would save battery cos it would not activate the screen all the time
Hey, I was thinking about something likewise. It would be nice that while the phone is closed, a single click on the camera button would start/stop music, a double click on the camera button would go to next track.
