Garmin Mobile XT - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

I have Garmin Mobile XT installed that I have used with the Garmin GPS10 bluetooth receiver.
Is there a way to make Mobile XT use the internal GPS? When I start it, it scans bluetooth for gps device. I don't see any other options.

Garmin Beta
I think if you search Garmin's website there is a beta version which uses internal gps in the new test rom

Even if that is true the maps are still locked to your GPS10's serial number. You will need to use GPSGate to emulate the Garmin GPS protocol and cloak your GPS10's serial number. I am looking for a version of Mobile XT which will use the internal GPS as well. I'd love to ditch my GPS10 and go all internal. I like Mobile XT a lot and since I paid for Garmin maps I want to use them!

I am using Garmin with the internal GPS, I cant really point you in the right direction because this sort of "talk" is prohibited here but it can be done quite easily.

Post on getting Garmin XT to work with the Internal GPS is in my FAQ:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363431

OK ummm... WOW!!!
All I can say is that Garmin Mobile XT is awesome! After a little hacking (not discussing here...Vancelot, PM me if you want info) I got the software unlocked to allow non-garmin GPS receivers. This software works with the intermediary driver so no launcher is necessary. It works like a charm! Now I don't feel so bad for buying the new maps nor the GPS10 receiver... even though I don't need it

I spotted a copy of Garmin 2009 recently and downloaded it. By chance can anyone here tell me their experiences with TomTom compared to Garmin?
I currently have TomTom6 on my vz6800 but was curious about this application now?
Thx

I started out with TomTom...very good app. A friend of mine had me give Garmin XT a try...another good app. I'm starting to prefer Garmin though. It "was" easier to use with the intermidiate driver when I had dcd 3.1.6 installed...since 3.56 and 3.2.0 all have gone to hell...works very sporadically.
The biggest difference to me is with Garmin I can select just a few states about 4 or 5 and load them on my storage card (115 megs) as opposed to TomTom with no way to select the states you want (that I know of) to my storage card (just about 1 gig worth).

Good info proxcee...yeah I am still on 3.16 I may pause here for a moment...
Between the two apps, how did the maps look or the map rendering as it navigated along? ...about the same. I like on the car version how it shows buildings but this might not be an option for the mobile version...???
One thing I was looking for that the TomTom does not do was to see if Garmin Mobile app announce street names for the next turn...???

How were you able to do this? I just have a giant 1GB .IMG file...
I have a 2GB SD and an 8GB on order, so it's not really a matter of space - I'm just thinking that a smaller map would yield better performance...

You won't find that on mobile GPS software (as far as I know). I haven't tested TomTom7 yet, but neither TomTom6 or Garmin Mobile XT supports text to speech street names.

Yeah...it would be cool...but I've never come across any that do either.

I have Garmin and it si possible to split the maps into smaller ones, but if u already have the .img file then i think ur out of luck u need the mapsource i think its called.

OK...this is what I really wanted to know

Iguidance announces street names. Here's a demo: http://www.buygpsnow.com/iguidance-v4-gps-navigation-software-version-4-for-north-america-dvd-runs-on-pocket-pc-pc-and-umpc-864.aspx

This is a nice feather but before I jump ship how does it compare to tt6? Or Garmin is someone has compared,

I don't own Iguidance but I've used it on a friend's device, so my comments here are someone limited. I find the interface of TT6 and Iguidance to be equally good (neither struck me as having any particular weaknesses of note). The displays are good and menu navigation is intuitive and easy.
TomTom offers "plus" services like weather and traffice....Iguidance does not appear to.
Iguidance may require some tweaking with GPSGate to get it to work properly on the Mogul. This guide at ppcgeeks gives some insight:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=248345&postcount=282
There are tons of comparisons on the Internet. A quick glance this morning showed that it's a mixed bag as to what people prefer. I hope this is helpful.

i had both of these on my phone at the same time to compare, i kept the tomtom and kiboshed the garmin. with the tomtom the maps just worked, while with garmin i had to select maps by small sections from my desktop to have them work. I also prefered the tomtom menu system and found the poi's to be superior.

Garmin Mobile XT for WM6.1 pro
Hi,
I am new to Garmin, just installed Garmin Mobile XT v5.00.10w(cracked) in my HTC Touch 3G, i found that it tooks too long time for "Awaiting better GPS Accuracy" while i am driving on the road where the weather is actually good(clear sky). Sometimes can be 20-30mins long for "start navigation".
Can anybody advise me what's problem with my Garmin? Is this a setting problem? Or it doesn't cracked properly? It was cracked by the HTC shop's promoter where i bought it.
Besides, i tried to copy additional vehicles into "vehicles" folder, and when i launch Garmin, it becomes trial version, but it disappear after i deleted the newly copied vehicle files from the vehicles' folder.
Could you please kindly advise me?
Thank you in advance for your advise..
Vincent

Tom Tom navigation and adding maps

I have several maps for Tom Tom,which i received from a friend. The problem that i am having is that whenever i connect via usb and try to use the Tom Tom Home to load the maps(Even putting them in the correct folder on the pc)It still will not show them up.Any ideas on what im doing wrong? And this version that comes with the device is (compared to the other software that is out now)kind of old in the tom tom family.Anyone with any ideas or help would be good.
Last question is that when it trys to update, via the cable connected to the pc,no matter if i try to update the phone data base to the micro drive or internal memory it tells me that the drive is read only.If i put in my memory card it will say that it cannot access the file.
regards
Are the maps for version 6 of TomTom? versions lower than 6 will not work. If they are version 6, did your friend activate any of the maps from the package he purchased? If yes, they probably will not activate on your pda unless you call TomTom and have them switch the activation from your old pda( your friends) to your new pda...But that would not cause the problem of transfering them to your device. Did you upgrade your version of TomTom home? they have had several upgrades to the home app. Man, I hate that Home app. It was much easier just copying the maps to your sdcard or microdrive.
I have tom tom home on the pc .but they said you should have it on the phone as well, but its not there, ony tom tom.and i dont know what version the maps are

Tom-Tom on the Ameo with all the maps of western europe loaded runs like a dog.
Pop along to your nearest torrent site and find iGO, load up and give it a try - it's much better than Tom-Tom (only IMHO), the maps load and scroll quicker and it is just more visually pleasing.
Make sure you have Bluetooth Explorer UNTICKED. Reset your device and it should find the maps.

I should have checked first before posting - yeah, unfortunately they only do Europe at the moment. They are expanding though, and because they use Tele-Atlas maps it shouldn't be too long before they do USA & Canada.
Another good thing about iGo is that you don't have to have a PC installer. You just copy to SD/MD and run.

No problem, I used TomTom Mobile in all it's different guises over the years and then a friend suggested iGo. I took TomTom off after only 1 trip with iGo. The only problem I've found so far is that it can't find Pizza Hut in Monchengladbach!

Cut tomtom maps?
Is it possible to cut tomtom navigator 6 maps? I have the USA and Canada maps which take 1GB. I don't want to store all of this on my 2GB miniSD card (I need space for music and stuff), especially since I only need maps of California. I know, one solution is to carry another card, but I don't want to do that. I have tried that and it's really annoying having to switch cards all the time.

If you want to go the free route:
Smart2Go (routeplanning, location aware, allows for offline work, but does not provide instructions)
Google Maps (similar to Smart2Go regarding functionality, but no offline option)
Nav4all (provides spoken instructions, no offline option)
Similar projects worth checking out are AmazeGPS (beta for wm had been released, haven't tried it yet) and navigami.

Simple Answer
the one and only answer to the question for the best navigation software:
it's iGo 2008, with 3d navigation, super detailed buildings and an amazingly fast screen.
Maps are dated April 2008...
I tried IGO 2008.
Contrary to what other are saying...IGO 2008 is really not suitable for Hermes if you're planning to use the phone features of your phone.
IGO 2008, although runs properly by itself in hermes, if you get a call or whatever while running GPS, your device slows to a crawl. The software uses too much ram imo.
I prefer TomTom because it has a small footprint and does the job right without harming other features of the phone.
I do like the IGO 2008 graphics alot, it is by far the best. But not worth the trouble if you want to get calls or make calls while gps is running.

Opinion: Best GPS Navigator?

Hey all,
I routinely use my Titan browser to look up the address of a business, then put that address in a GPS Navigator program to navigate to that address. I was wondering what you all think is the be all/end all program to complete this task. I've been using iGo 8 as it's got by far the best interface and maps, though you can't look up a business while in the program. I've also used Google Maps which does a great job of looking up the business address, but a crap job of navigating you to it. Finally, I've used Yahoo Go! a little bit, which is ok, but not the best. I welcome all your opinions...
Mapquest Navigator does a good job for me after using SprintNav for a long time for free....... Lots of feature and 50 bucks a year is alright.
i use tom tom 7 with maps usa & canada works great locks in 5 seconds in the basemant also names and addreses i am gettin from live search and save them in contacts list so its easy to navigate in tom tom
Not sure if its the best, but I've been very happy with iGuidance.
Once I got gpsGate and aGPS it has been flawless.

My guess is they say that because Verizon locks down the gps so you can only use it with VZ Navigator, but if you're on this site, I'm sure you have enabled it on your XV6800, so I would still give it a try.
Microsoft Live Search.
It does a great job at searching and the routing isn't bad either. It only has a 'ding' as you approach a turn, no voice navigation.
I have TomTom and hate it. IMHO, Live Search is very good compared to TT.
I'm a Garmin XT user my self. I've loaded City guide and Topo maps on it so if I'm in the city or out in the woods I've got it covered. It uses the same maps and charts that have been produced for Garmins other devices. I haven't looked in to it yet but the Ocean navigational charts should be able to load on there also.
Due to my rural location data is not reliable. When hiking hundreds of miles from the nearest tower its not even an after thought. So i prefer to have all of the map data located on my 8gb HCSD. The entire Island of Newfoundland is ~20 mb for each map.
The Dir. on the device is 4.8 mb (for V5) the rest is on the card.
The City guide maps are the most detailed i have seen yet. Many of the smaller roads in my area were not on Tom Tom.
The down side is that it costs quite a bit. I have mapsource software from other devices so it wasn't that much for me. I have seen reference to a "re-pack" from other discussions, located on the torrent sites but that's at your own risk.
Chris
Live search and Google maps.......best free apps....I prefer Livesearch......
Sprint Navigation is also great for a free app....
TT7 is my software of choice. i dont know about anyone else, but i kinda like variety in my GPS, so i pretty much have all of them and pick and choose based on what im feelin and whichever one i press first.
I've tried a number of programs:
iGO: Beautiful maps, great interface, good voice prompts, very accurate... but it's a HUGE memory hog. You can't do anything else when running it. I've even had my phone fail because of lack of memory. Not acceptable if I can't make and receive calls.
iGuidance: Very low memory usage. Accurate. Buttons are small, hard to use when in the car. Graphics are not great looking. I had some quirks with the display when switching between Landscape and Portrait modes.
TomTom: Graphics are better than iGuidance, not as good as iGo. Buttons are large and easy to use in the car. Accurate. Memory usage is low. I was able to plot and follow a 2.5 hour trip and play my music with Media Player without an hitch in TomTom or the music.
All things considered, I'd love to use iGo, but the huge amount of memory usage makes it a not go for the Titan's wimpy 64megs. TomTom uses a lot less memory and is only a small step down from iGo's graphics.

Another vote here... Garmin Mobile XT seems to integrate the best of the online services (gas prices, traffic, etc) with the ability to be used as a true standalone GPS (not reliant on a data connection). I travel a few places where I lose my data connection (no phone service at all) and Garmin doesn't even blink, with all the map info stored on the microSD card.
IGo 8
IGO 8 is by far the smoothest, sexiest and quickest recalculating map and trust me I have used them all.
Cons: You must disable everything running in the background before using. I have never had a problem with receiving calls. I leave my bluetooth headset hooked up while navigating so my device can remain in holster. Just do a soft reset before you run the program run oxios hibernate and if you have about 25 megs free initially I drove 2600 miles with it recaluculating and just sitting still while I went in no problems.
Garmin XT is my second choice because I find it easy to use and very dependable.
Live Search and Google Maps require internet connection and were useless in the smokey mountains, except to prime agps.
Garmin XT
I have Garmin XT and it's great. I also use Google maps from time to time, it's better if you want to check out an area you kind of know real fast and also it has the sat maps which can be nice sometimes. But for actual naviagation Garmin blows Google away. Memory is sometimes an issue but with the latest DCD 3.2.6 it's less and less of a prob.

Navigation software

I've heard you can't use the new TomTom 7 on this device because it has no touchscreen.
Has anyone experience with navigation software on the Rose?
The servicedesk of Tomtom couldn't answer my question because they weren't familiar with this device yet.
I'm using Copilot Live 7, works like a charm.
Well, technically you can use TomTom 7. You just have to use FakeCursor (or similar utility) to emulate screen taps. I have tried it and it works, but is not really usable.
So far I have also tried:
Garmin XT Mobile - does work, but I don't like the interface
Sygic McGuider - does work and I like it, use it and recommend it
TomTom 5.xx - does work, but has only older maps available
I tried TomTom 7 and it won't work because you need to be able to tap the screen. I didn't even know you can use a programme that emulates screen taps.
I'm off to bed!
Do not lose your time and use Sygic McGuider. It is best I can recommend for the smartphone.

Anybody any idea what is a good Navi Software for the 'vodafone' s740?
I've searched all the web and tried several things like:
- sygic mobile 10 (didn't work, can't go further than select language after install)
- TomTom7 (tried install 7.450 and then overwrite with 7.915 navigator.exe, didn't work, can't even install these cabs from storage card, get message: "problem with umarshaller.exe")
I reckon Sygic and TomTom are the nicest navi.sw. out there, but maybe I am looking in the wrong direction.
PLease, anybody advice?
Or step by step install instructions from some version of Sygic or TT to make that version work?
Hy!
Sygic v10 doesn´t work currently.....i´m using Sygic v9 with actuall Maps and it works perfect for me so no need to upgrade to v10......Maps are at the moment the same.....
You can also try Igo8....great Navi-Soft...3D-Maps....good grafik....BUT WORKS ONLY WITH "Fake Cursor".....because its for Touchscreen Devices.....
Ps.:I think from TomTom only the "Old" v6 works......
I use tomtom 7.910 on S740 and it works very well, i dun't think it was really made having non-touch screens in mind, but, everything works and i'm happy with it. I tried updated versions i haven't been able to use them tho, but, no need anyway ^^
Only thing that bugs me a bit is that some newer versions of maps i can't get them to work, i think they're made for tomtom 8+, dunno if they make new maps to work with the 7 versions of tomtom... but haven't really searched that much, the ones i have are pretty much accurate so far.
for me is
#1 Sygic *
#2 Garmin

Im using Garmin mobile XT V5.00.20 with latest maps without problems.
i'm using TomTom 7.917 and it works very very well, fluid and detailed...
i have the last map available for my nation (italy), updated on december 2009.
the program is a bit heavy (at least 10mb of ram) and cpu always over 50%...
it's easy to install, u need an sd at least 2gb to put in all europe map or a smaller sd for some nations (italy's map is 180mb).

I used to have Garmin Mobile XT. It worked sometimes. Now I have Sygic Mobile Maps 2009(v7.71) with v7.80 maps of Poland. There is one downside: maps from Garmin had the contours and addresses of all buildings. It was very useful as long as Garmin Mobile was communicating with GPS module. Sygic maps have only addresses, no building contours. That's bad, when you have poor eyesight...
