6800 for modem? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

most all threads are on how to use a 6800 as a modem for a lap top.
I need to use it for a modem on my pc. I have tried the internet sharing thing and it didnt work (probably me). what im looking for is a blow by blow breakdown on how to use it here at the house.
My wife has a few courses she is taking on line and neither of us can get on to the web site but i can using my phone so i was trying to use it as a modem so she dosent have to go anywhere to do her class.

The ICS thing works great and is pretty easy. Launch ICS, plug USB cable in and hit connect on 6800. Look at status on 6800 and see if it says 'connected' or 'check usb cable'. If connected then enjoy, if 'check usb cable then look in device manager on PC and figure out why , then it should work good. Or get WMWifirouter and a WIFI card for your PC and do it wireless.

Laptop or PC.. it works the same.
1. Make sure you have a data plan with your carrier. (No data, no go)
2. Use Internet Sharing program on 6800 - (on sprint make sure Sprint PCS is selected at network connection). Click connect
3. Connect USB cable to 6800 and PC
4. Windows XP or Vista should detect and connect automatically
5. Bring up IE or Firefox to verify and surf away.

the process is the exact same whether on a laptop or desktop. they're both computers...
as long as you have a USB port and the right drivers for your OS, you're fine. works the same.

ok cool ill give it a shot and thanks for the input. I just had no idea if they were the same or not so thanks again.

got it to work but after a bit active sync comes up and ruins it. Im getting sick of active sync getting in the way all the time, it severely gets in the way of my regular connection and basically shuts down my connection untill I unplug my phone.
Anyway, back on topic, i keep getting this error "the romote party has endd this connection.
I have and unlimited data plan with sprint.

Search for app Kill Activesync.

now im getting an error code "67 registration code error your pcs vision username and or password may be incorrect"
then this pops up....."the romote party has end this connection.
activesync is not running

are you on the 3.27 radio? What rom are you on? I know DCD deletes the necessary reg keys already, so i'm guessin you are on a 3.27 radio.

3.16 rom with the 3.27 radio

when i get this error
"your pcs vision username and or password may be incorrect"
where do i put my password and username in, in the phone?

Are you running Internet Sharing (Use Spint PCS connection) BEFORE you plug in your USB cable? If not, Active sync will usually automatically run.
Do a SOFT reset and try it again.

the problem is with the radio. IT's crap for internet. Go back to 2.17 if Internet connection is important.

Working: Hermes + Mac 10.4.8 + AKU 3.3 + USB + MissingSync = Internet!

OK. Like a lot of people, I was horrified to discover that my Mac could no longer use my Hermes' bluetooth connection (DUN) after I upgraded to AKU 3.3. Microsoft lovingly removed DUN and added PAN, which MacOS doesn't support yet (rumors are that 10.4.9 or 10.5.0 will).
So I suddenly was left without a way to connect to the 'net using my phone and my MacBook Pro.
Plugging it up USB didn't do anything -- the Mac had no idea what the phone was, and didn't know how to use it for anything.
Enter MarkSpace MissingSync. I installed the latest version (3.0.1) on my Mac, and plugged in my phone to sync it up. By chance, I ran an 'ifconfig -a' in a terminal window, and noticed this:
Code:
en2: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
ether 80:00:60:0f:e8:00
media: 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> status: active
supported media: 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex>
So MissingSync is establishing a connection using a faked IP address. OK. Interesting. So I unplug the phone, and go into the all new "Internet Sharing" app on my phone, set it to USB and turned it to connect. I plug my phone back in, and MissingSync tries to start up (and fails). But the IP (en2) is still there. I turn off my Airport (wireless) connection, make sure Bluetooth is disabled (to make sure).. and do a netstat -rn, and lo and behold, my Mac has suddenly taken on my phone as a default gateway.
Code:
Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Netif Expire
default 192.168.0.1 UGSc 9 40 en2
127 127.0.0.1 UCS 0 0 lo0
And... I'm on the 'net. I didn't have to create any connections, I didn't have to add any routes manually. Nothing. It just worked. (Yeah, I'm amazed, too).
Everything works. DNS, SlingPlayer, Entourage w/ Exchange.
I'm getting around 900/kbps down, 600/kbps up on Cingular/AT&T. Of course I live about 2 miles from Cingular HQ, so that's probably to be expected..
In MissingSync, turn *off* USB syncing, and it won't throw as many errors -- just sync via Bluetooth, but the drivers are still there, so it still comes up with an IP address and pseudo-ethernet device.
MarkSpace needs to market this. Awesome. It's not as convenient as bluetooth, but it's a lot faster, and you have the added benefit of charging your phone at the same time.
oh.. and one more thing... you can still use your phone for voice phone calls (when you're on 3G), and data. It works just like your're not plugged into it. And you can use a bluetooth headset with your phone while you're connected.
edited: make sure "use advanced usb networking" is turned OFF in the Settings>Connections page on your phone.
Wow, just tried this myself on cingular as well, 150k/sec down and 90k/sec up using EDGE. Extremely easy as well, just kinda works by itself if you have MissingSync installed. Posting using my TYTN right now actually.
I'm on the medianet unlimited plan so I connect through wap.cingular. Will I get hit for any additional data charges for tethering?

Very doubtful, although I don't know for sure. My phone is set to use MediaNET, and uses wap.cingular. I have PDA Unlimited Connect. From all appearances on Cingular's billing page, a notebook hooking into your phone via this method just looks like ordinary phone data to Cingular.
Now... I wouldn't use this as a primary internet connection. I'd bet if you put several gigs through the phone, they're going to get suspicious.
I actually use around 4-5 gigs a month normally (just with ActiveSync polling for mail and normal use), and they've never said anything to me.. so.. who knows.
Unfortunately, it's so difficult to get info from Cingular/AT&T these days (I'm still trying to get my [email protected] to work)..
My billing cycle is up in 7 days -- I will post back here if I see any different charges on my bill.
If this works, I'm going to hump your leg.
wow, works. time to start humping. i love you. please, bear my children.
btw, definitely worth adding to the wiki.
I am assuming that disabling the connection in Internet Sharing restores Missing Sync's normal (supported sync) functionality? Great pick-up. I already have Missing Sync and my 8525 will be here on Wednesday. Thanks.
Damn, I can't afford Missing Sync
Oh well, I bought it anyway. I'd already played with version 2.5 so I knew it was starting to get good. I can make use of some of the other features, (like importing my cameraphone snaps into iPhoto) but this internet sharing feature is why I bought it. And it works just as you said:
1) Run "Internet Sharing" on the phone with 'PC Connection' set to USB.
2) Plug into the Mac.
In fact "Missing Sync for Windows Mobile" shows up as a network interface in System Preferences / Network, too.
This is actually a lot nicer that the old way I used to do it. Before AKU 3.3 and Missing Sync 3 I was getting Internet access on my iBook over Bluetooth using Internet Connect and a lot of faffing around with modem scripts. I eventually found one that worked.. .but I always had to 'dial' 3 times before it connected and it took about 2 minutes to get a connection.
Now I can just plug in and go ... and my phone doesn't need a separate power supply to keep me connected all day. ** very happy **
(Yes, they should really advertise this!)
i'd really like my hermes to work on my Linux box, since I use it as my main system over XP.. i read a few articles regarding this, and it turns out the older version of synce worked on most HTC devices.. but for some odd reason the new ones dont seem to.. someone did mention that WM5 devices weren't supported for now.. the older WM2003 does tho..
if it makes any difference, I'm on Ubuntu Linux 6.10 32bit version..
any help is appreciated..

MDA Compact III
What version of Missing Sync are you using? It's working for me using version 3.01
It's 3.0.0 (315) and it reports as the latest.
Well that's clearly not true I suggest you download the new version from the site (I only got this a few days ago).
Upgraded to the 3.0.1 (downloaded from the site). The client on the phone upgraded as well. Still nothing. On the sync mode there is en2 connection (with orange status) in the network preferences. When I activate the sharing mode it disappears. Checked in terminal as well.

So, can it use bluetooth to link up my Hermes (AKU 3.3) and connect to the internet from my macbook thru the Hermes??

I don't believe so, I've only tried using the "USB" setting. Besides, the phone gets power through the USB cable and more bandwidth. There is no advantage to using Bluetooth except not needing a cable!

share 3G via WiFi?

I thought I saw a .cab file here somewhere that would allow you to bridge the 3G/EDGE connection to the WiFi connection so I can share my 3G over WiFi to laptop or whatever.
Anyone seen this? I cant remember the name, thought it was something like WMBridge or something.
Thanks

internet connection sharing will allow you to share your 3G over bluetooth or USB to your laptop !!
and now that I think about it you can almost certainly go through the arduous and difficult task of getting activesync to connect over an adhoc wifi connection, once that is done you will be able to use the phone as a 3G modem for your laptop.

u can do it tht way but its hard, and requires a registry hack, which to be fair doesnt work all that well, disconns after a couple of mins at best, bluetooth is the way to go if u want wireless connecton, although i use the lead for security, u can use the 3g conn as a modem, but then if u like us use tmob wb and walk then u cnt use ur data package.
hope this helps

The app is called wmWifiRouter. Looks like they just came out with a new version the 10th. Forget bluetooth, its not secured at all, and only lets you share with one device. With wmwifirouter you can share with many. See the link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=341398
excellent that is exactly what I was looking for, I will play with it today and see if I can get it to work.
Thanks
G
Should be a simple matter of copying the exe to your device and running it. It takes care of all the registry settings, starting up Internet Sharing, keeping the connection alive, and with the latest version you can even put the unit to sleep and your connection will stay alive. About the only thing it doesn't do is set up a peer-to-peer profile with a fixed IP address, but the thread above walks you through that. Make sure you set the profile to use WPA encryption (NOT WEP or 'open') and set a password.

The directions are confusing because the newer method was grafted onto the same thread as the older method. So it's hard to tell what's what. I put about an hour into this but made no progress. The exe file doesn't appear to do anything on the Athena...

Sorry, just saw your response as I wrote mine. Here is what I did:
1. set up an ad hoc network on my Athena. IP address 192.168.0.1 (another place saide 192.168.0.7--tried both)
2. Set up on my client (MacBook Pro). A connection was established.
3. Ran the exe file -- nothing happened. One comment said to deactivate the network before running. I did this in various degrees with no success.
4. Also opened up the Internet Sharing applet and tried to connect manually -- "USB cable is not connected."
Clearly I'm missing something here. It would be very handy to have this capability. Can you clarify??
Not sure why you are having a problem - I unzipped the zip, transfered the exe to the athena and it ran on the first try after first setting up the ad-hoc wifi connection (settings, connections, wi-fi, network adapters tab, IEEE..., use specific IP address in the 192.168.x.x range; then go to the other tab and set up an ad-hoc connection).
I had an even worse experience. Everytime I ran the exe, my Athena locked up, needing a complete reset each time.
I gave up in the end .
I have got other methods to work using Mortscipts, but it does seem like something that would be well worth someones time sorting out for the good of us all.
Have you tried the latest version of wmWifiRouter? The developer released a new version of it earlier this month. Its on version 0.8 now.

Tethering problem anyone?

Hi all
i am having problems internet sharing. i have an unlimited data plan and my mogul was connecting my laptop yesterday. it has just stopped and i cant get it back! anyone else having the same or suggestions?
thanks in advance.
me to
Same exact thing i have reflashed reinstalled changed adhoc network names everything even reg usb connection have gotten it to say internet was good but wouldnt actually transfer my only question is if you are on the new gps radio and rom because the issue started a couple hours after i went to new rom i am wondering if sprint built in some way of checking on tethering into new radio and rom if so this sucks and i dont want gps anymore
I have dcd's 2.2.0 with 3.27 radio. I do not know why it has happened. I cant seem to find solutions anywhere.
I had issues with this after awhile as well...I think it may be Verizon killing tethering access from their side of things....
I solved it by buying a copy of PDANet...
Works like a charm and even better than the standard tethering methods.
does pda net work with wifi and i have sprint and last but not least hopefully we dont get charged
Well I just got a trial of PDAnet and it works. I am going to do a speed test to see what I am getting. Hopefully no charges with sprint.

are you able to connect w/ activesync??? i cant even sync my contacts
I am having the same problem with my touch also I just tried connecting with internet sharing yesterday it says connected and the laptop gets an ip and connects but it won't go anywhere on the internet not sure why this is happening
Same here...it will conect but won't do anything
I am able to connect with activesync. I had to make sure that i had enable/use USB connections checked. I reinstalled activesync and restarted the pc and softrest my ppc and I have not had a problem since. I was unable to get anything using internet sharing, but I am on my laptop right now using pdanet. Ran a speed test and getting 1.1MB/sec down 532kb/sec up.
what i dont understand is if this is related to the new rom or if sprint just started trying to do something so it disabled the regular internet sharing and also want to know if pda net works wirelessly
I just tried to tether with my Mogul on Sprint; it seems to be working without issue. I used the internet sharing app on the Mogul.
I'm using DCDs 2.2.6 ROM.

restart the phone and enjoy...
but please make sure u back ur registry up or remember this post to go back to it so if its messed up u can place that value back and FYI its a REG_SZ type value.

PDA Net will work with any method you can connect to Activesync with...
I have never tried to get it to sync via Wifi...
And didn't have a lot of success with Bluetooth either...
PDA Net also works with WMDC. All it really requires is for the phone to be connected to sync and it will work.

you have to close activesync for wmwifirouter that seems to be working and i changed max cm retry to 5 from 0 in the registry key referred to before
nevermind something weird going on if i start a secured connection in my browser then i can stay on that site if i switch to the adhoc connection but i cant even go to google. ex log on to xda and switch to wmwifiroyter and keep browsing posting whatever but cant go to any other site.
i think this is a win 6.1 issue only
Try a differant computer, I can tether just fine with my laptop, but I have problems tethering with my decktop pc. It might be a windows XP issue

Verizon tethering of XV6800 via USB

First of all, this is what I have:
Phone: XV6800
i have an "unlimited pda" plan through Verizon
ROM: DCD 3.1.6
RADIO: 3.42.30
I want to usb tether my phone to my laptop to use it as a modem. I do not want to incur any extra charges. (verizon warned me of a 20 dollar fee if i tether with out that option added to my plan).
There must be a way to do this, without getting charged.
Any help would appreciated.
Use the internet connection sharing in the Comm Manager, using either Bluetooth or USB. Works like a charm.
I like using WMWifiRouter, but that isn't USB, it's through the wifi

This works perfectly, you can even use it through bluetooth. I don't incur any extra charges. I know it works for sure with DCD's roms, because I am not getting charged. There is some reg key that gets changed so VZW does not know you are tethering.

Wmwifirouter is also a great program, but (speaking from several months ago) when I would use it consistently over a period of time at school, or in a hotel, etc, it would overheat.
Using the USB method doesn't do that at all, and also seems to keep things going quick.
works
ok i can confirm that it works nicely. i am using internet sharing via usb and its nice and easy. as long as i dont get charged this will be lovely.
i think the secret cap on unlimited pda usage for verzon is 20 gigs a month. i'll just make sure i dont go over that.

You have to have upgraded to a DCD rom.
Dan
also note that ICS, is called "Internet Sharing" on DVD's roms and is in the program menu. not under settings. that confused me too, being a former herald owner, i had a cooked rom where the chef always had it in connection settings.
I use PdaNet and it works just fine for tethering. USB and Bluetooth.
ICS Advice
FYI - ICS works great but you must launch it on your phone first and tell it to connect before tethering it via USB to your computer.
Hope this helps.
VZW internet connection and Mac
Is there a way to use ICS or anything else to share internet (usb/bt/wifi) with a Mac (i've got a macbook) ? i've tried WMWifirouter but haven't gotten any of the versions to work with DCD 3.2.3...
thanks!
So I have tried this every way I can think of and not had any luck. I had it working a long time ago, but am having no luck now. I am using ICS and I have tried the reg edits under wmodem for CheckProfile=0, Multi-NAI=0, WModemDun=0. My phone connects to my laptop and opens a LAN connection and under status says "acquiring network address" for about a minute. It then pops up the yield sign and says "Limited or No Connectivity" On the phone side everything looks good. I get an error that says cannot connect sometimes, but not always. I tried deleting the Extension key under the Internet Sharing registry and still no luck. Anybody have any ideas? Is this a phone thing or a laptop thing. I am on WinXP and it does show in the device manager that a Internet Connection Sharing Device is attached and working. Thanks for any help.

Okay, Okay, i follow. Removing "Dun" from a serve string was exactly what i had to do on my voyager and other LG phones to hack the dun. I have had QPST installed on my PC before but never needed it because i used bitpim, so i uninstalled it. I didnt know QPST even worked for pocket PCs. I thought it was for quailcomm and LG phones.
so would i do it the same way? Hook my phone up to my pc and run QPST file explorer on my PC? Also, do you have a copy of it or know where i can download?
You should check out PDAnet. There is a website called warez-bb. They have all kinds of programs to download for free. PDAnet usually costs money but you can download it off of warez-bb for free.

Fastest way to get a virus.....Fact.
I only deal with rated torrents from trusted sites. Thanks for the reply, but ive tried it and it doesnt work. I dont need a program to make a dial up connection on my PC using my phone as a modem. The problem was that you can dial out but verizon has a http portal page that pulls up saying that you need to buy the service. I needed a way to get into the service menu of my phone and change the outgoing server. Only, i didnt know if there was a service menu on this phone. But someone was nice enough to show me how to access it, and like my voyager, i just changed the string and now i can use free dun. No QPST needed.
Cheers to free tethering.
odd... I use ICS and big V has never caought on. want me to drop the cab I use here?
You can download PDAnet for free from their website. I use it on my Touch Pro and Blackjack II.
Thanks, i have ICS. I just needed a hack to bypass verizon.
Why would you use PDAnet anyway? just make a dial out account with the #777 settings etc and set your phone (bluetooth or USB) as the modem.
PDANet just runs as a app in your tray and you just need to right click and click connect. I have not tried any others really. I have just found this one really easy to use.
this is all you need... http://ppcgeeks.com/forum.ppcgeeks/showthread.php?t=47075
Does anyone have a suggestion about how to get into qpst on the Touch Pro 2?
I know it is a basic question... thanks in advance

Can you please tell me how to access service menu on the phone and enable internet connection? I usually used internet sharing file to connect to internet. Now I think verizon just blocked me. I'm a new user and need a step-by-step instruction. Thanks!
