Very confused in flashing to new dcd ROM, help? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

I'm very new to this flashing thing. I'm familiar with pretty much everything else, however. Having just sold my GPS, having a handheld GPS would be infinitely useful (Especially since I get service on a mountain that I frequently go biking on and get lost).
That said, I can't make heads or tales of some of the threads going on with the 3.0.2 ROM, flashing it, flashing the radio, and getting the PRL or... Whatnot.
I have an Alltel PPC-6800, it's using the stock ROM and radio (2.14.671.3 ROM and 1.4 radio), so basically I haven't changed anything. I don't really understand the steps involved coherently, so if someone could kinda give me some hints or whatnot I'd much appreciate it.
Thanks!

Checkout the Titan Upgrades forum at http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/
They have some helpful step-by-step guides over there.
With Alltell because you first have to upgrade to the new Sprint ROM to get the new radio and then install a custom ROM. But make sure you read up because there are few other steps involved.

So I am supposed to use the Sprint ROM? Hmm. I guess I'll read up some more then and try to piece it together, thanks though!

You need the new Sprint ROM simply to get the new Radio (with GPS capability)... then you have to load a custom ROM that is meant for Alltel

GPS rom (vz) problems

I installed the dcd 2.1.0 verizon rom with the v3.27.0 radio (following these instructions:
http://www.phonenews.com/how-to-add-gps-to-htc-mogul-xv6800-p4000-titan-2663/)
and everything went fine but now my device is freezing up and generally not acting healthy. Can anyone vouch for this set up and/or recommend the best current rom for verizon? Im not too concerned with having GPS available (but would be nice), I would really like to have a nice no junk rom above all else. Thanks for any advice.
I haven't had good luck with any of the gps/reva roms on verizon... Seems every rom combination has it's share of quirks/bugs it's just a matter of finding the one that has some u can live with
I'm yet to find one that is FLAWLESS... if you find one let me know!
I have flashed several VZW xv6800s. If you have the 3.35 radio just flash DCDs latest (3.0.4). It runs very smooth. I have no issues except sometimes the GPS fix takes longer. It does everything else. Make sure you Hard reset after flashing.
Edit: sorry guys, was not thinking as i typed. I meant 3.35 radio (the one from the sprint update). Flash the 3.35 or 3.37 radio!
I would suggest using the latest ROM as well. Seems to have made a difference with battery life to me.

interesting how u guys on vzq have no problems with the reva radios... I was running 3.0.4 for quite a while until I finally canned it because I couldn't deal with apps crashing when switch to other procs... I went back to 1.7 to see if there was a problem there too but everything runs good it seems... am having bluetooth problems locking up device sometimes though so now I'm back to vzw stock radio to see if that fixes things? Actually I have no idea if bluetooth would be affected by radio or not but I'm desperately trying to find a stable setup.

This is VERY bad advice and will only screw your phone up even more. It says in numerous places on these boards that 3.27 radio is NOT compatible with 3.x.x roms. The only roms that will work with the 3.27 radio are the 2.x.x roms.
My question to you though is why on god's green earth are you still wanting to run a 2.x.x rom with the old crappy buggy beta radio 3.27? Just update with the alltel updater to get radio 3.37.20, don't let customizations run, then flash dcd 3.0.4...much much better and will probably fix your gps problems.

Danger!
radio 3.27 is NOT compatible with dcd 3.0.4 rom!!!
1) radio 1.30 or radio 1.40 = use dcd 1.7 (non gps rom)
2) radio 3.27 radio = use ONLY dcd 2.x.x series roms (with gps , revA - experimental)
3) radio 3.37 radio = use dcd 3.0.1 or 3.0.4. (gps and revA official)
my recommendation would be option 1 or 3. Depending on whether you want gps or not.

Zen,
I think you might be the victim of a dodgy titan. I was, like you, using 1.7 for the longest time because I couldnt put up with the buggy 3.27 radio. So i just stayed non gps until the new radion 3.35 came out and dcd released 3.x.x series of roms. Since then I bit the bullet and went back to gps rom. I didn't look back. So far dcd rom 3.0.4 + radio 3.37 (alltel) has been the best (i.e reliable) rom setup I have experienced since I was on dcd 1.7.0. I think they are both equal now, except that I have gps enabled now and I dont need to carry my gps with me all the time.
The internal gps does SUCK the battery down kinda fast, but it is reliable. No bluetooth issues that I can see except that call quality is still sub-par but at least it connects without any trouble. If I am using the gps function in the car i use my BT gps because the BT radio uses a lot less juice than the internal gps receiver.
I have VZW just like you and gc, az clown etc and we all have similar good experience with the new setup. So the only other thing I could say about your titan problems is that it must be hardware. Try stock again and see if it clears up the problems then I would say that my reading of your situation is wrong. But from what you have said it seems right.

Well, that's the thing.. when I go to stock everything I have no problems but am stuck with crappy wm6.0... I don't mind not having the gps so much but it def would be nice... However, I do hate having to run an older rom that isn't community-supported any longer due to newer releases...
I think my problem with 3.0.4 might have been the way I flashed the radio.. I was one of the original ones to actually get the dcd released radio installation to work and hadn't really looked back.... im wondering if maybe that was the problem... I might consider trying the sprint rom method to get the radio and then trying 3.0.4 again...
Other than that, I don't see any way to get a warranty replacement on the device if all the stock vzw stuff works without a problem.. only support I ever have logged with vzw for this device is the many many many times I've had hung data connections from switching back and forth to reva/non reva radios so much.... I long for a stable setup so I don't have to deal with this anymore

Just need to "screw things up" on your own Make it so your phone won't boot, bring it to a vzw tech center...cuz they won't know what the hell is wrong with it trust me...and bam they'll swap it out.
Edited my original post...
Also, i have had 2 replacement xv6800s. One was for white spot in the bottom left part of the screen. I had to call VZW and tell them they were out of replacements at the store. The other was replaced a week later for data not working.

Zen,
go the 'official' route from stock. olipro 2.40. sprint 3.35 official (without allowing customizations) then flash dcd 3.0.4. If you still then have problems then we can isolate your flash before as a potential problem.
if you still have all the same issues then i really think its time for a new titan. If all is well then you can finally relax and enjoy the device.
Good luck

Ya, I actually did the Sprint Flash this time around and things seem to be working better, to my surprise... Things seem to be running a lot better now compared to the radio hack I was using before... I imagine that's the reason dcd killed that link off the forums... although it didn't brick my phone, it obviously was crippling my device quite a bit.
Only thing that worries me (somewhat) about the sprint rom was that it changed the bootup screen (pre os load).. it's now black screen with red lettering showing versions... I have NO idea how that can be reverted back if I ever need to have this thing serviced. That sprint rom appears to totally changed the device.

Flashing of the pre-windows boot screens (i.e. the ones that show up around the time that the red lettered rom versions appear) are not part of the rom. You can't modify them with dcd's kitchen.
There are three options that you have.
1. You can create a mini rom with the splash screens in it that you can flash to the device. I dont know how to do it and dont really care to find out, but gcincotta knows how to do it and posted instructions a few days ago in another post. He can tell you how to do it.
2. You can use the ppcgeeks kitchen to create boot screens and then flash your dcd rom over the top.
3. Flashing a stock verizon, sprint, alltel etc rom will contain the splash screens and put them back on along with the correct (stock) radio and roms. Then you can take your very clean 'stock' titan back to the store for repairs or replacement without fear.

Interesting.. I've never seen that changed other than this sprint rom... the stock VZW rom images I have just do the OS and Radio separately... I guess when/if I run into a situation where I need to revert back I'll worry about it then.. Until then, the newer boot screen is def cooler

gc, this is so true. The 'techs' at the verizon stores (bless their hearts) know nothing at all about the titan. you could go in there with a fully "sprintized' titan and seriously they wouldn't notice.
I found this out the first time I tried to flash. I thought I had bricked the device and took it to the "service center" verizon store near my location to get the data back working (yeah that's all the problem was, but I was a noob and didnt know better). They didnt have the slightest idea what to do to solve the problem. They screwed around with it for a while and gave it back, basically the same. they offered to switch it out for me, but I said i will try just a bit longer (and it had a customized 'colonel - ppcgeeks' rom on it - if you have ever seen one it is completely unmistakable - looks nothing like a verizon rom).
I went outside, called *8899 and got a service support tech to fix the phone over the air. The problem had just been the data account needed to be reset at their end. Not only did the guys in the store have no idea how to fix it, they didnt even notice that my device was clearly not stock.

Yeah, if you do the flashes separately the boot screen never change. I still had the original verizon boot screens until just recently when I did the upgrade to dcd 3.0.4. Its the running of the sprint installer that overwrites your verizon splash, not the rom or the radio themselves.
Anyway, i used the dcd kitchen to create my 3.0.4 rom and selected HTC animation. That creates a HTC splash to overwrite the sprint stuff, and then I did this and this and my machine looks sweet when it boots.
The instructions of how to load them is explained in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=379822
Enjoy. (I cant post pics of the screens because the xda database is busted at the moment)

Want To Upgrade My Titan

First of all, I apologize for being a PPC noob, but I asure you, my technical skills are high and my PC familiarity is high too. I have done alot of searching/learning on here and other forums (and the internet in general) and think I am ready to take the plunge.
Background Data
----------------
HTC 6800 Windows Mobile 6.0
ROM Version 2.17.557.0
Radio Version 1.64.00
ROM Date 11/20/07 (geesh, I just got the thing)
Garmin Mobile XT
Provider: Cellcom (non-major / tier 2 provider in Wisconsin. I get great coverage from them in the area I spend 99.99% of my life in)
Mostly I want yes or no's to the following questions, but if you want to educate me, believe me, it is appreciated. The potential of this device feels massive, but right now it is too cumbersome/unreliable (I am sick of soft rebooting this darn phone).
1) Is there any way to backup my phone in its entirity so if I need to revert to the carrier provided rom/config I can? Including can I revert back to my original bootloader?
2) Can I use the newest Sprint ROM on my phone (WinMob 6.1) even tho I am not a Sprint customer?
3) Would I be better off using one of the ROMs provided by this forum?
4) If I upgrade the phone, I should no longer need Garmin's bluetooth GPS transmitter, correct?
Thanks in advance to all who help. I see the potential of this tool and really want to try and unleash it.
Afternoon, onioneater! It sounds like you've got a generic ROM that is often used by minor, or local carriers (I'm down in Illinois with a local carrier, had the same ROM as you). There are many, many ROM upgrade options available for you. I talked with a technician from my carrier about upgrading, and as it turns out, you could probably flash to any major carrier ROM as long as you do not allow customizations to run. Check out the tutorial on flashing to custom ROMs over at the XDA Wiki.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=TitanRecentHome
Although I did not back up the original generic ROM, I wrote down all EPST and provisioning settings for somewhat of a backup. As I said above, a customer with my provider flashed to a major ROM, for Sprint, and got it to work. But there is a wide expanse of options with custom ROMs too. By the way, as long as the radio version is higher than 3.35, internal GPS is unlocked (newest Sprint ROM and most newer custom ROMs work on a radio of 3.35 or higher). Although with custom ROMs, you have to manually unlock the bootloader and manually install a radio with a MicroSD card that is 2GB or less. Check out the link above for more. On a side note - A few months ago I was in the exact same situation as you before, being a noob and all with a generic ROM - you can keep in touch with me through E-Mail if you have any more questions [email protected]
Thanks dfc. What ROM did you settle on using? I was thinking about using dcd3.2.6 with the recommended radio and bootloader that dcd recommends. Seems like a pretty safe way to go and sounds like many people go that route.
Have you made any of your own ROMs yet? I am going to keep reading and studying and trying to figure out a way to fully backup the phone so if I have to revert due to company policy or anything like that, I will be able to.
I was very surprised to get help from someone from Illinois being that this is Packers/Bears weekend. If it makes you feel any better, I watched the movie Brian's Song the other night and I still get teary eyed. LOL.

Alltel Touch Pro 2.01.671.1 ROM update

It's on HTC's website, dated July 7th. I haven't seen any other threads on it, and I wanted to see if anyone else has tried it. I've updated to it myself, and it seems to be an overall improvement over the version I had. There's really nothing much in the notes, though it seems they tweaked quite a bit. Most notably, it's done wonders for my battery life. I used to always come home with a phone that was nearly dead. Now I get home with 60-70% still left on the battery. It could be my imagination, but the phone seems a bit more responsive now as well. If the battery life is anything to go by, it could just be from general optimization of the ROM. Other points of interest... the activesync app is no longer self-launching, and Opera Mobile appears to have had an update as well.

im in the process of doing it know, ill let ya know what i think in a bit
I tried it when it 1st came out, its definitely better than the shipped rom, but its still got all of the bloatware and other b.s. that interferes with performance. IMO, you're still better off with a cooked rom.
ya i honestly cant tell a different between stock rom and this update
Oh yeah, I'm sure a cooked rom is faster. Just thought I'd put the PSA out there. It does seem to address a few issues for my launch version of the ROM.
one of these day ill get around to putting a custom rom on my phone.
thiers just to many and i cant figure out which one i want
stock
if i have already unlocked my phone and running a custom rom and want to flash to this stock rom do i need to do anything different?
No, just flash as you normally do. Every couple of flashes I go back to the stock rom anyway. Probably just the "placebo" effect, but I've convinced myself it helps.
Do it for the Radio

Notation to everyone here this ROM includes an updated radio. 1.12.20F. So that it's self should be worth it. I run NFS rom but I am going to update to this so I can grab the updated radio. I will then jump to his. My radio is currently 1.03.16F. It also has the later PRL and PRI.
I see the in the Radio Thread in this forum that they have the alltel readio without the whole ROM. So if you want go that route. I have just found that doing a stock flash every once in awhile keeps my custom flashing less problematic.
im still having problems as far as radio signal.........and the only reason i don't just upgraded the radio is their is no alltel dump yet
I also get great battery life after the update.

typing this didn't do anything...all i got was call cant be completed as dialed
One very nice discovery I made today (because of how little I actually talk on my TP) is that they've changed the call answer screen a bit. Seems they took a page from Apple's book and changed the answer and ignore buttons into a slider. You slide it all the way left to answer, and right to ignore. Should fix the accidental answer problem I know a lot of people (including myself) have had.
Will this work on Verizon TP? I know i will have to apply keyboard patch but would it work?
Radio should work no problem, especially since alltel and verizon are 1 now.
I dispise Verizon ROM. No YouTube, No Internet Sharing etc... Got it as a insurance replacement when my Alltel TP broke. They said they don't have Alltel TPs anymore.
Please give me the good news... PLEEEAAASE
PS: I already have GPS unlocked using MR1 release from Verizon.

I wouldn't attempt it if I were you. Have you considered trying a custom rom? If you've never done it I could help you through the process. Stock roms SUCK!
Can i ask you if it works in a touch pro un-locked of the vodafone Italy company?
I have an alltel touch pro but my area switched to verizon now, im assuming this won't be a problem because i didn't need to do any update when they switched so im guessing the radio won't be an issue? Really want to do this if it increases battery.
Also will this remove any settings or themes that kind of stuff?
edit nevermind i see it removes everything.
if i take my memory card out before i update can will all the programs that are one it reinstall? and when i put all my backed up data back on the device do the programs reinstall or do i have to do something to reinstall them?

New Touch Pro - Requesting Help!

Hi all!
I'm picking up a hopefully gently used Touch Pro tomorrow to replace my HTC Mogul. Very excited to have some extra RAM to work with, as well as the capability to try out all of these great ROMs.
As I have no experience with the Touch Pro, I am hoping you all can tell me what Radio and SPL I will need to begin my journey, and hopefully where to find them!
If you can offer any additional advice about this phone, any tips, tweaks, or general recommendations, I'd be very appreciative.
Thanks in advance!
I forgot to add that I'm going to be on the Sprint network!
Anyone?
I found the unlocking guide above which includes info on obtaining a HardSPL version. I hope this is the best one available.
I have not been able to find any information about updating the radio of the device so it works best with Sprint.
Hopefully someone can shed more light on this for me.

You should have everything you need on my guide. As far as radio, what you could do is after unlocking the device, flash a Sprint stock rom (the latest available), which will likely have the latest radio that Sprint released as well. Once you have flashed this package, simply flash another rom (whichever one you like) on top. The radio will remain the same and only your rom will change. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to find more for our device on another popular forum. It seems that XDA has more of a GSM focus for the Touch Pro. I appreciate your guide as it has helped me expand my knowledge of the device. I feel like I'm all set now.
I did the same thing a few months ago. There is everything you could ever need to unlock and flash to what ever rom you want. After flashing just about every rom here, my problem is that I want to combine about 3 different roms to make the one I want, The only problem is I have no idea how to use a kitchen or build a rom hahahaha.

EDIT 1: To the post above mine, try PPCKITCHEN.org... if you are not sure how to cook a rom, this kitchen is made for people with little to no experience... Experiment with it, build your own rom with your own options. Just make sure you do the update first...(it takes forever for the update to complete.) There are also other kitchens out there, but this is the one I first started out with. (Sorry for advertising other sites...)

There are a LOT of issues with the rom kitchen for the Herman in PPCK. A lot of reports of roms simply getting stuck at the initial boot-screen. You can try Ervius or one of the newer Visual Kitchens. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I was able to find more for our device on another popular forum. It seems that XDA has more of a GSM focus for the Touch Pro. I appreciate your guide as it has helped me expand my knowledge of the device. I feel like I'm all set now.

the pro is a good phone as long as you have a good rom.
i am currently using the new xxxRootRom which can be found on the ppcgeeks.com forums. i have tested about 6 - 8 different roms so far and found this one to be very stable and snappy.
maybe try a few so you can compare.
only thing i would recommend is to change the pagepool on the xxxrootrom because for some reason it was set to 6. change the value to 0 and you will be very happy with it.
hope that help.
New to Touch Pro (former Mogul User) - Many Issues - Verizon
I just got a new Touch Pro from Asurion as an insurance replacement to XV6800. I am not new to these forums and have, over the years, applied many hacks and flashed many ROMS to my Mogul.
I'm currently using the stock ROM from Vzn (full device details in my sig) but I'm experiencing too many issues to address in a single post perhaps, and I researched and tried many solutions for hours. My biggest issue is Bluetooth related.
I am using the Bluespoon Spider stereo headset which worked great on Mogul. On TP I cannot get any settings to not cause skips and lags on locally stored music playback. I use both Adv Config 3.3 and Total Commander to adjust bitpool Min/Max bitpool. sample rate, & audio gateway settings. The best I've gotten is clear, mostly uninterupted music with the TP sitting in my lap, BUT if I turn my head to the right (the AVRP controls are in the right earpiece) I get serious skips & lags. I used to go about 100 ft clearsight from my Mogul before experiencing drops! Now with TP a matter of inches and my own head blocks the signal?
Anyone else experince this issue? What are you best results with BT seeings? I remember dumping M$ Bluetooth Stack for Widcomm's on Mogul and that made all the difference - can I / should swap out stacks on the TP? My headset won't even properly coonect, I must continually choose "set as wireless stereo" each time I turn on BT.
As for players, Ive used WMP, HTC player and S2P all with the same poor results. I hate that with TouchFlo 3D off, WMP insists on opening and assuming control of AVRP (play/pause/next) features. I tried one hack to break that and it nearly bricked my phone and it caused my SD card to become unreadable AND unformattable. I'll address that in the proper forum
I was so psyched about getting the Touch Pro, but I think I'm gonna have to cook the pants of the stock ROM. Any help with my bluetooth issue woud be greatly appreciated.

Which Radio will work with this ROM?

I am about to flash this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312201
I'm wondering which radios will work with this. I'm new to rooting/flashing, fyi. I've been studying immensely.
The reason I'm wanting to flash a new rom is because I'm running cyano 7.1.1 and my bluetooth piece will no longer connect to my phone. Would you folks recommend I flash a new rom? Or only new radios?
The current radios I have are: 1.48.00.0817r AND 0.01.78.0802w_3.
ALSO, if I may ask, what is the difference between RUU and Radios? How are the two linked?
Thank you very much.
Radios really aren't rom specific. more like whatever works best on your phone.. sometimes updating to a radio that works or fixes someone else's problem isn't necessarily going to fix someone else's . If that makes sense.. I honestly haven't changed radios since I first rooted in 2011..
Really what works great for one person might not work great for you. Most you can do is just try different radios over s few days and come up with your own conclusions of what worked better on your phone.
reestipt reactions.
RUU = rom upgrade utility. Basically usually the stock roms from HTC.
The radio usually affects signal quality and speed.
