I see all this stuff about custom ROMS, but then the instructions say you need to flash the base ROM first, then flash the custom ROM you "cooked". If that's the case, what's the point of the custom ROM? Can you make a ROM to flash all by itself that will give you a working phone? Can you edit the stock ROM to remove stuff you don't want (like the default File Explorer or something) and replace it with an app of your choice?
Is there an FAQ or anything about this kind of stuff?
Thanks.
Most of the current roms/kitchens require the newer GPS enabled radio. To get that, you have to flash the stock 3.35 rom from sprint AND unlock your phone. If you are on sprint, flashing 3.35 will get you a decent GPS enabled phone. If you're not on Sprint, and want GPS, you need a custom ROM. Kitchens let you make your own custom ROM - you choose what programs to include and exclude in your ROM rather than your carrier.

I've recently flashed to DCD's 3.23 ROM, and all went well; only problem is that I need to return my unit due to hardware issues! My carrier is US cellular, and I have downloaded the original US Cellular ROM Dump provided by DCD but I do not know hoe to flash this back onto the Titan... can anyone help? I have to return the unit upon receipt of the new one! Anyway, I plan on flashing the new unit, and It would greatly help if I new how to use the ROM Dump as a backup. Any direction that anyone can provide? Thank You all!!!
If your carrier's ROM dump has everything included (ROM, Radio, SPL, etc) like the Verizon one did, then you basically need to follow two steps:
(1) Relock using Titan Relocker
(2) Flash on the Stock ROM
you can find more info about this if you search for relocking
You need to Run the titanrelocker and then flash the radio and rom. Problem is there is a chance your usb wont work after the relock so you might have to flash the original radio via sd card then the original rom the same way.
Thank You for your replies; especially scrawnyb... I used your tutorial for my original flash; worked great. Lost all access to EPST though! Anyhow, I probably didn't specify well enough, the dumped ROM I'm speaking of is the one provided by DCD; I have no clue as to how to even begin to flash these files. I believe that all (radio etc.) is included, but, again, I'm not sure as to how to do it. I hope I'm not asking too much; if so, I apologize! here is a link to the files i'm speaking of; maybe that can help you help me. As for lllboredlll's reply, I don't know much of UC either! What do you think is my best shot? Thanks guys!
I currently have an HTC Touch Pro. It is through a local CDMA cellular provider. I would like to update the ROM on my phone to WM6.5 but, really would not like a brick. Since all the articles and forums I find with instructions always refer to to the major cellular providers like Alltel, etc. Can this be done with my phone and is there a way to create a backup of the current ROM on the phone if I mess up or need to flash the phone back to "factory" setting?
Thanks in Advance!
So long as you aren't downloading a ROM for a specific carrier, any Generic CDMA ROM will work fine. You should be able to find the stock ROM for your carrier here or any of the other sites related to Flashing the touch pro.
Worse case scenario, take the .nbh file in the RUU update of the stock ROM and rename it to RAPHIMG.nbh and place it in the root of a SD-micro card and do a soft-reset. This will flash the stock ROM back to the phone.
But to answer the original question, once you flash-- the ROM image that was on your phone is gone. Hope this helps.
I know this sounds pretty dumb but If I wanted to change The current Rom I'm using How do i do that? Do I just Follow how i did the first time its found on how to Flashing your First GSM USA 1024LEO ONLY!! (For Noobs)
(cant Copy link cause im a new member, and yes Im a T-mobile user)
I also heard that you need a Gold Card on the Thread called.
([TUT] How to change from one official ROM to another (including language)
Then i found this Post:
"You only need gold card to flash a different regions Factory roms then what came with your phone was shipped with not version number. So if it is WWE and you want to flash a different region then you would need to use gold card. But to downgrade the Rom to the 1.48 then you will need to find the 1.48 Factory Rom that matches what your phone was shipped with. And if your phone is branded then you will need that 1.48 Origianal rom.
Remember when you flash back to a factory rom after HSPL is installed then you will need to re install HSPL again to flash custom roms because it changes it back to factory SPL.-FunMCRider"
So i only need to use a gold card When I'm Changing Regions?
So I'm pretty much confused
about how to change Roms...Helpz?

this is why it is always said to search before you post. First off, since you're talking about changing a rom , sounds like you already tried a custom rom. Unless you flashed back to a stock rom, you already have hard spl, second when you flash a rom it formats the device by removing present rom and installing new rom, depending on who you talk to, some people recommend task 29 before a flash, let me just tell you that I think is a good thing if you want a clean flash, and no you don't need a gold card, the only reason I've ever heard of a gold card being used is for a bad flash. So to make it easier on you, here's the steps.
1.starting with a stock rom, you need hard spl(specific to device)
2.if you already flashed custom rom, and did hard spl before, then you don't need to do it a second time.
3.if you want, do the task 29(optional)http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=644781
4.since new to the game of flashing! use the Mskip's noob guide for flashing, that you mentioned before to avoid any mistakes. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653614
5.another option are radios, but you might want to check into that after you get the flashing thing down first.
Disclaimer!: These steps are to give you an idea on the usual steps on flashing roms, I'm under no circumstance responsable for your actions, if you decide to follow these steps please make sure you read up on these and understand them before proceeding, you don't want to end up with a fancy paper weight
Getting a bit confused about all this, so am wondering if i've got it right. A rom is the whole thing, it includes a kernel and so forth? So a Kernel is a part of the rom right? And you can flash kernels individually without flashing a whole new rom? But what is a firmware then? Just another name of a rom?
Also on the Galaxy S2 can you flash custom roms, like Lite'ning, without getting root first? Or do you need to get root before flashing custom roms? If you can flash custom roms first without rooting, will the custom rom then give you root as long as it includes it?
And you also got recovery, which is a separate thing again? Galaxy S2 comes with a very basic one if i've understood correctly, but there is others out there that you can install, which also gives you the ability of flashing roms straight from the microsd/phone storage?
So have i gotten any of this? Hope am not to far off
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1246131 looks like most of my questions where answered there, though am still a bit unsure if it's possible to flash a custom rom before you root?
ROM's and FIRMWARE: The ROM or Read Only Memory is the internal flash memory where the core operating system resides. The Firmware is a device specific part of the ROM that controls various hardware components. So the firmware is contained in the ROM but in the context of Android the terms are often used interchangeably.
KERNELS: Different kernels offer different advantages, some are fast, some are light weight on the battery and some are a mix, so yes you can in most cases flash a different kernel with a ROM, and then your phone will be running the custom ROM you picked with the new kernel you flashed.
Rooting: You must have a rooted phone inorder to flash a custom rom, but rooting in my opinion seems really safe and it really easy to do on the SG2
There are things that allow you to flash from your SD card and you do that by entering clockworkmod revovery, apps like rom manager also allow you to flash from sd card, but you can always use odin, which is safe and fast
hope this helps
Thanks, and very nicely explained =) Another question then, what is the reason one need root before you can flash custom firmwares? As i heard Galaxy S2 doesn't really have any safety measures put in to stop things, like HTC do with their bootloader. Another thing is that i checked the thread for the Lite'ning rom, and saw the installation procedure, and it doesn't mention anything about having root before starting, so am getting a bit confused there.
You don't need to root before flashing a custom ROM as long as you can enter download mode (power up with volume down, home and power button pressed) and can flash the ROM via Odin.
If the ROM is flashable only via ClockWorkMod recovery (a zip that you copy on your phone) then you need to flash something that includes that recovery before flashing the rom (like CF-Root or any kernel that includes CWM).
Lite'ning ROM that you mentioned earlier is flashable via Odin so no problem.
Every ROM includes a Kernel, the only thing they sometimes don't include is the modem like in VillainROM, you have to flash it separately. And also, if a ROM is announced as rooted, when you flash it, you will have root regardless of the state before flashing
Thanks once again =)
Another question, if one want to get back to stock, flashing one of these "official firmwares": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 well revert everything right? Even if i got CWM recovery, after flashing on of those "official firmwares" will give me back the original recovery as well?
Edit: Also you mention "modem", if one ROM don't include one, do you have to flash it separately for the ROM to function at all? Or will it just use the modem that's already on the phone or something? Checked out the VillainROM thread and it doesn't say anything about a modem.

If you dont flash a modem it will just use the one you had before. They talk about it in the old thread and also in the new but not in the firsts posts, you'll have to do a search.
Plus Modem Kernels are interchangeable .
KH3 Firmware with KI4 modem and KH1 kernel .

So I'm rooted with TW recovery and I plan to flash a custom Rom soon. Making sure I don't brick or mess up my device do I just download the Rom of my choice(making sure it works for T-Mobile version) and flash it in the recovery like a nexus phone? I see these Rom threads mentioning aroma or boot.img and others just saying flash it and that's where I get confused. First time with an HTC device so I'm rather confused as to how this device works with flashing.
Sent from my HTC One
Yes, just flash the ROM normally (with a full wipe of course). Some of them use the Aroma installer, so just make sure to follow the notes in the ROM's OP (ARHD, for instance, uses Aroma, and they specify not to use the touchscreen commands in Aroma or it'll freeze), to make sure you don't mess anything up... lol.
