Flashing Aliant [Bell] - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

I'm new to the idea of flashing my phone. However, in Nova Scotia there is now a law that we cannot use [hold] a phone while driving - must use a headset. I've been putting off flashing my phone as I don't really know how it works, but having read lots on here, I think I get it.
My last questions before jumping are:
1. Will I have to call Aliant?
2. I've tried ##228 and other combinations and no success here. What do I have to call or know in order to ensure that everything will work?
3. Has anyone with an Aliant ppc6800 flashed DCD's 3.01 successfully? Is there anything I need to know first?
Thanks for your time spent answering a newbie's questions.

bump
bump, please help.

I've successfully updated my Bell 6800 numerous times. I had to use ##PST# to access the EPST though and not ##228. I followed the instructions here though. And DO perform the Sprint flash as directed. It all works out in the end
FYI, I never had to go the SD card route. I managed to get the updates to work directly over USB each time.
Good luck!

Thanks!
Thanks for replying! I've been annoyed with the lack of alarm function when plugged in and with the bluetooth problems and wanted to flash once I learned about xda-developers, but didn't know how to translate all I've learned on here to Aliant.
I'll try tonight and let you know how I make out.

Hi Jon, I'm with Aliant as well (New Brunswick), and I flashed mine with DCD's 3.01 no problem. I did it pretty much the same way as in the link provided by nlg. It worked "Out of the Box", I didn't have to call Aliant after the upgrade and everything is working fine.
Enjoy your NEW phone.

Fantastic
Thanks to everyone who helped. After realizing that we still need to flast on XP machines and not Vista 64 as I have on my laptop, everything went smoothly.
I ran olipro 2.4 then flashed the sprint rom and then DCD's 3.01 rom. Everything on my phone is great so far. Thanks to everyone here!

Anyone having issues with the GPS working? I'm unable to get any GPS Sats locked at all. I can do everything else just fine.
Just verifying, did you check the steps in the GPS thread?
I'm installing 3.0 for the first time right now. Will test GPS soon.
Yeah
I've been using GPS for a bit now with the older ROMs. I just want to confirm other VZW have it working.
Works great here. Be sure you have Be sure your Location Setting is set to Location On.
If you are using Google Maps, be sure to turn on the GPS in the GMM menu.
Also, be sure you are outside, not in a building.

DCD 3.0.0 works Excellent on my XV6800
GPS improved. I get way more satellites.
I modified the ROM a little bit and on a Bare ROM flash I get 28MB and with some major apps i get down to 25MB to 26MB

Yes, it works. I have been using Google maps. One thing, I noticed this morning is starting it up after an hour being off and in a building is "Google Maps" would get hung at "Initializing GPS" when I selected "Use GPS". The only why I have gotting it to work again was a soft reset. Not sure what is going on, yet.
Everything works fine on my xv6800 with dcd 3.0.0 including GPS.
No more issue where it takes 5 seconds to connect to a call when answering...among many other fixes from the leaked rom.
Interesting
Seems to be related to building the Kitchen on Vista for me. I can reproduce the problem if I build the kitchen on Vista. If I use all the same options on XP, it works fine. Strange. I guess something it messing with the build process on Vista. Solved for me at least.
Stupid question... assume you need the latest radio for this (3.35 or whatever, I have 3.27)? I'm a little leery on upgrading again considering I had to call VZW and apparently they're hip to people flashing these roms.

Yes, you need 3.35 to work with DCD's 3.0.0. I did not have to call VZW this time going from 2.3.2 to 3.0.0, I can't confirm if it will retain the A-key authenication from previous versions, haven't been back there for a couple of weeks.

hmm... I don't have an A key on mine, but when I re-entered all the info it wouldn't let me place a call.
I'll give this a wack maybe tonight or tomorrow. I JUST upgraded to 2.3.2 and this comes out... figures.
I have only ever had to enter the A-key once, the very first time I flashed a ROM to the phone. Every upgrade since has just worked.
The latest is working great for me under VZW today. I was running 2.3.2 before that. I flashed the sprint ROM to get the new radio, then immediately flashed the ROM I built for verizon from the 3.0.0 kitchen. Did a *228 1 just in case, and verified that the PRL after that was identical to the one it had before I did the upgrade (##775 SEND, 000000).
EVDO, wifi, GPS all working. I like the new wireless today plugin.
I'd still love to see an up to date step by step on how to get VOIP working, I've never managed to get anything VOIP related on this phone.
GREAT WORK AS ALWAYS DCD! Thank you! Remember to show dcd the monetary appreciation guys.

rschell, i'm very curious to hear the exact steps you took to upgrade, so that you did not have to call verizon.
some specific questions i also have:
1) did you do the entire sprint upgrade to get the radio, or did you just install dcd's standalone 3.35 radio?
2) if the entire sprint upgrade was used: did you let the customizations run, or did you reboot into bootloader before that point, and if so, where exactly?
3) did you have to re-enter any settings in ##778 ?
thanks for any help you can offer!

Do not let the customizations run, just soft reset before they do. Now run the new kitchen creating your ROM. Should be nothing else to do.
I've never had to call Verizon through any flashes including when 3.16 first came out.

At least to Verizon customers, the EPST A-key will always be blank. It is a 26 digit number generated by Verizon that is different each time you authenticate. Once you enter it, and the device reboots the A-key disappears. I have had to call and get a new A-key every time I have made the switch from non-Rev A to Rev-A. Not sure this new radio is any different. I have had excellent support from Verizon, every time I have called, you just have to let them walk through their diagnostic tests.
The authentication issues appear to be Network Switch dependent. I just happen to be in one of those areas.

So if I just go ahead and reboot while, say, I'm in the screen calibration after my initial boot, I should be in the clear?
I was thinking of yanking the battery at this point, putting it back in, rebooting into bootloader, then flashing either by the RUU or SD (can't recall if the RUU works while in bootloader mode or not, so i've got the SD option to fall back on). Or should i just do as you say: soft reset, let the device come all the way back up, let activesync connect the phone as a guest, then run the RUU w/ DCD 3.0.0?
you don't even have to soft reset, or manually enter the bootloader. once you finish flashing the sprint update the phone will boot and will stop at the tap screen to set up device screen...at this screen activesync WILL connect. just run the kitchen and the phone will AUTOMATICALLY put itself into the bootloader and flash the new rom without running sprint customizations. the sprint customizations only run after you set the device up, not before.

Starting from 2.3.2 (if you start from the pre-GPS ROM, you may need a different SPL).
I did both the radio and ROM in one upgrade, I just did not let the customizations run, actually I forced it to the boot loader just after the HTC Mobile splash screen came up. Then I installed DCD's 3.0.0 ROM from the boot loader (2.40!). See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2011926&postcount=3
Success!
Data connection confirmed working
Incoming/Outgoing calls confirmed working
Incoming/Outgoing texts confirmed working.
GPS confirmed working.
no calls to VZW customer support whatsoever.
so far, no *228 updates at all (prl seems to be current, 50989; confirmed within ##778)
Here's a quick rundown of my starting conditions, and what I did (basically, just followed gcincotta's instructions exactly)
Starting conditions:
-NexVision's no2chem 5051 - based ROM w/ 3.27 radio
-2.40 SPL
Upgrade procedure:
1) Connected phone via activesync
2) ran the official Sprint/HTC 3.35 upgrade utility, which ran successfully.
3) On the initial boot, I let activesync connect while the phone was still holding on the "tap screen here to begin" screen
4) I then ran the RUU using a DCD 3.0.0-based rom (NexVision's VZW 3.0.0), which was successful.
5) After initial boot on NexVision's rom, I let the customizer run (i think it's just an SD power management program). It soft reset, and I was good to go.
That's it! Once it booted up after the second install, everything that I confirmed above was working perfectly.
Thanks again guys!

No phone calls with dcd 3.0.1

Got the radio upgrade 3.3x and all works well with 2.x dcd rom, but upgrading to 3.0.1 has problems with phone calls. Both receiving or outgoing, the device resets 10 sec into the call. Also Voice Command 1.6 not working. sucks.
verizon xv6800
I'd be willing to bet millions you didn't follow directions when flashing.
Nope. Cooked a kitchen, tried the Verizon Rom....neither work with 3.0.1. works great with 2.x though.
Voice Command 1.6 now working OK as well under 2.3.2. I is happy. Still looking for good GPS software. I really liked Earthcomber, but doesn't work with this rom.
If you tried to flash the radio standalone, then the verizon cooked rom...you didn't follow directions.
The ONLY way to successfully upgrade to 3.0.x is by flashing the sprint update to upgrade the radio.
OK so I cry for help. Why the heck would I apply a Sprint update to a Verizon handset, granted both CDMA. I upgraded the radio at the same time as 2.2. The 2.2 DCD rom I'm using that WORKS WELL should be no different than the upgrade to 3.0.1. Unless I'm forgetting to stop customization with a soft reset.
You're not getting the point!!!
The only reason to flash sprint's official rom is so you can update the radio to its latest version. After this is done, it DOESN'T MATTER whatever rom you flash next, such as a Verizon rom. Use DCD's 3.0.1 rom it should be working. You would have known this if you read instructions. If you flashed the radio alone first, then your settings (ESN, MSID, etc) will be wiped. You will have to re-enter these either manually or call up Verizon to do it for you. This is probably why you can't make calls.
Exactly my point. I flashed the radio with the Oli 2.4 and updated the radio from stock verizon. Then flashed 2.3.2 and all is good with the new radio. So why doesn't it work with 3.0.1? I just found my way to the In and Out Burger via Odyssey Mobile locator.
Everyone keeps telling me that i didn't follow the destructions but they don't point to where they are.
Maybe wrong radio ver?
Crap. Mine says 3.24.00. I guess that's my problem. I'm an idiot.
Please point me to the proper radio D/L.
Thanks,
Sorry for asking what is probably a simple question, but I am having the same problems. I have SPL-2.40.Olipro atm, installed the verizon ROM upgrading to 3.0.1 from NexVision's Hybrid rom. My radio is upgraded to 3.25 or whatever it was supposed to do fine. On vibrate mode, when a phone call is incoming, I get stuck in an ever ending vibrating. I can text, and attempt to cal lsomeone but nothing can be heard and no one can hear me. I know i screwed up somehow- but what exact steps do I do to remedy this?
Thank you in advance
We have to do the Sprint radio update to 3.35 first, which is an upgrade from 3.27. Then go to ROM 3.0.1.
It's always interesting to me how people jump up to say "you're doing it wrong" but don't tell you how to do it right.
Here's how to do it right.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=17667
Gecko122, There is more to the Sprint file than just the radio... It includes the ROM as well.... My understanding is this:
1st - Run Olipro unlocker 2.4
2nd - Run Sprint Official upgrade , NO CUSTOMIZATIONS.
3rd - Load Custom ROM.....
That has worked for me.....
PS - the DCD 2.x.x series do NOT play well with the new radio, hence the 3.0.1 kitchen.... Driver differences....
do i have to flash back to a former version of dcd or anything? or can i start from a messed up 3.0.1?
hi Penn,
Well, exactly what have you done to your phone?
Bootloader version?
ROM version?
Radio Ver?
Then we can start from there and develope a plan to help ya.
Ignore that above - I re-read you original post....
Here's what you can do and correct me if I'm wrong Penn...
You have Oli-pro 2.4 bootloader loaded
You have DCD 3.0.1 ROM loaded
You have the 3.27 Radio loaded?
If the above is true, then we have options..... Let me know

No, I flashed new radio stand alone package by dcd first day from an olipro 1.20 then 3.0.0 rom then 2.40 bootloader, and then one day later 3.0.1 rom... I never use sprint upgrade at all, and I have no problem about my phone at all. There is not just one way

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't you the one with the extremely long, complicated post about how you were able to get everything working that way?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2014972&postcount=326
Secondly, you may have been able to get everything working, but you're lucky. The chance of problems occurring by flashing this way is way too high in my opinion to even bother, not to mention others have had problems that absolutely cannot be fixed without reflashing back to stock and updating with the sprint update. That is why dcd removed the standalone radio from the Radio Rom thread.
Gecko, the reason why I did not "tell" you how to do it the right way is because dcd's thread has 94 pages of information on how to do it the right way. I've even posted several times on different pages in that thread with explicit instructions on how to. While I am always very eager to welcome newcomers to this community, I also strongly encourage them to read, research and educate themselves before touching their device. It doesn't mean I'm not a nice guy and don't like to help, because if you search my posts you will see that I help a lot around here. If you had simply taken 20 minutes and even skimmed dcd's thread, you would have found the answer yourself in no time.

Any Cingular 3125 w/ WM6.1 Std users?

All,
Any WM6.1 Std. on Cingular 3125 users here? Can someone give me their take on how well this upgrade works and how overall happy or unhappy they are with the upgrade? I am very interested in doing the upgrade, but don't want to lose features or find that usability is not reliable, or that the upgrade works but 6.1 Std is less "responsive" than WM5. I know there is a certain amount of risk, and I am pretty tech-savvy, so I am not too worried about that, but want to hear from others that are using this, whether they are really satisfied or not. Please let me know your thoughts! Thanks!
Frank

You wont loose features (other then the bloatware that is built in by AT&T - if you miss that, you might not want to upgrade). As for responsiveness - it is quite snappy - probably even faster then the wm5 rom you're running now (likely largely due to the removal of the bloatware)
rom
download the rom that you currently have, that way if you don't like the wm6.1 (but I can't see why you would not) you can reinstall the original.

Can I ask you another question - I noticed in your signature you are using 6.1 PRO on your 3125. I read some other posts here about PRO being really made for touchscreen devices (the 3125 is not) and STD for non-touch devices. Is that true? Is my current WM5 "STD"? I think I'd be happier with the simpler interface & closer to what I've been using (as opposed to a virtual cursor, etc.). Am I correct that this is the main difference between PRO and STD?

When you say "download the rom that you currently have" - can I download my current rom on my phone, complete with all my settings and everything? Kind of like a full backup? Or do you mean backup another copy of it from Cingular (AT&T)? If so, is there a post here that explains how? This would be awesome!

backup
Backup your current device with a backup program, I use sprite, but any that backs up all of your information is fine.
Then download the official rom for your device. If you decide you do not like your upgrade, you can install the official rom and restore it from your backup.
Both the WM6.1 Standard and Pro will work on your phone, however the Pro version was designed for a touch screen device, Erofich did an amazing job at making this unofficial rom/platform work on the 3125.
Try them both and see which you like, there is plenty of information on this forum to teach you how to use and install programs.

Noobie questions (sorry!) Please help!
All,
I downloaded the original Cingular/ATT Rom, just in case, and bought Sprite and backed up my settings. I downloaded SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe and ran it (from my PC, is this correct?). SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe seemed to run okay, and gave me the message "SDA Successfully unlocked, Please Reboot SDA Now!". I rebooted my phone and did not notice a change (I assume I should?) I ran the Rom update for WM6.1 Standard, which opened up a DOS-looking box that stayed there forever and did not indicate it was doing anything. After just over an hour I disconnected my phone and rebooted it, no change.
My questions:
1) Do I run SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe from my PC or from the WM phone itself?
2) Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong?
3) What does CID Unlock do, and do I need it?
Just to review, I have a Cingular 3125 with WM5, and I want to go to WM6.1 Standard.
Please help! Thanks!

first, you have to unlock you CID flash it to SuperCID, so you can flash it to any rom you want.
1)SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe can only run from your PC, or you may try it in your phone..
2)following the Tutorials and can never go wrong.

Actually, to set the record straight, especially for anyone else looking to do this with a Cingular 3125 (ONLY), here are the facts, as I ran into them:
1) No, you don't have to unlock the CID (SuperCID). I didn't, on a stock Cingular/AT&T 3125 and it worked fine.
2) SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe was not needed either, in fact it caused problems for me (see #3). Erofich's WM6.1 STANDARD ROM install has it's own version of this app built in and it did all the work.
3) "following the tutorials..." - sorry, and no offense, but that's BS. This site, as well as most if not all Linux sites I've seen suffer from the same "too many cooks" problem. There are sooo many people posting stuff, most with at best a half-knowledge of the required technology, that the noob is hit with a lot of crap to weed through and try. Keep in mind, this is very common with non-moderated Linux sites, and I don't mean any disresepect, but it is reality.
Example to explain #2 and #3: I read in this forum and in the Wiki's here that I needed SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe. It ran fine and dropped a couple of files on my cell. Trying to install the ROM (Erofich's fantastic WM6.1 STD) would crash every time, because it has a version of this same app built-in. I ended up removing SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe's files from my PC and my cell, resetting my cell, and running just Erofich's ROM install and voila! it all worked like a charm. My point: I had to find this out "trial and error", after MANY tries, as a noob, and it was NOT like the forums or Wiki or tutorials said it was. Lesson learned: the tutorials are not gospel.
Thanks,
Frank

Its very important to make it if you have an old bootloader version - 2.04 and older.
And btw, there are my recommendations for never flashed StarTrek devices:
1) make a SuperCID!
2) flash the latest official Cingular 3125 rom (v4.1.502.5) to your StarTrek (even if you have i-mate Smartflip, Qtek 8500, Dopod S300/710(+), Orange SPV F600 or HTC S411)
3) and after that flash an unofficial rom

I wholeheartedly agree with Erofich. I don't know how you possibly got it to work without following Erofich's instructions to the letter - maybe the things you did had a residual effect and finally everything aligned for you.
I am glad things worked out for you but don't disparage the excellent tutorials in this forum - if you read and follow them EXACTLY, it WILL work!
Also, this site is moderated and it does get the job done if you READ READ READ.
I have the Cingular 3125 and had it loaded with the latest official rom. Like Geekzilla I was unable to go through the supercid step. It kept getting stuck & giving me errors. I just ran the upgrade to 6.1 standard and it worked great. I didn't see any reason to backup anything either because I syncronize with an exchange server so all of my contacts and calender entries just reloaded into the new version. It worked great and I recommend it.
I'll also say that it wouldn't hurt to try the pro version for a couple of weeks. It will take some getting used to but it's really fast and it has lots of additional capabilities for power users. My phone locks up when I try to use virtual pointer but I have been able to do everything just using the buttons. To be honest I can't decide which I like better as I keep alternating roms. I only had one problem when going from the pro version to the standard. The fix was to go back and reload the official rom and then reload standard.

With all due respect, I spent a few weeks reading the forums and wikis here before messing with my phone. I did not want to brick it. And just so you know, I am an IT Manager with 16+ years of computer, server, networking and infrastructure experience. I've used cooked ROMs (firmware) for Linksys and Netgear routers. While I may have been a relative noob on hacking my phone, I was not that much of a noob that I cannot follow directions and get it done.
If I said that it worked without SuperCID, then it worked without SuperCID. If you read the reply post after yours, even someone else (Ramfan) explains that this worked for him also. I am pretty sure I even read a previous post from Erofich where he states that the Cingular 3125 ROM works without it.
Anyway, bottom line, I did not mean to get all "pissy" and mean. This is a great site, and you folks have some great stuff here, especially Erofich's ROMs and the others that I am sure also rule. However, truth is, in an open forum like this, there is some great info, and some inaccurate info. It is the nature of the beast, and I was not trying to slam this site, just state a fact. If this offended you, then I apologize.
Thanks,
Frank

I initially tried to do the SuperCID and application unlock but I couldn't get either to work with my phone. Maybe it has to do with the initial firmware on the phone. I actually got my 3125 at the AT&T store the day that they first arrived in Richmond, VA. Maybe the later phones needed the application unlock.
I've loaded and reloaded 6 different ROM's on my phone with no trouble. I realized that I was taking a risk but it didn't really matter to me as I have a newer Pantech Duo, 3G phone with WM 6.1. However now that I'm able to use these cooked ROM's on my 3125 it's actually become my everyday phone again.
In comparison between my DUO and 3125 I don't really see much difference in data speeds (3G vs Edge) but I prefer the clamshell design of the 3125.
By the way I'm running Pampooh's 6.1 standard version right now. It's definitely the most suitable rom for this phone that I've found. However I'll be interested in trying any future 6.1 pro roms or 6.5 roms.
Need help with upgrade
Hello, I followed the instructions to upgrade my 3125 to the 6.1 ROM. However, when I run the SPL on the phone I get a quick message "searching for SD card", then the phone goes to red, green & blue stripes with text:
IPL 4.01.0001
SPL 2.04.0000
and nothing happens. Rebooting the phone gets me going again. Then I tried to run the ROMUpdateUtility on the PC and it caused the same thing to happen. The frustrating thing is that I got this working about 6 months ago but had to reset my device. Now I can't seem to get it back to 6.1.
HELP!
Sorry, but my frequent frustration with Windows Mobile eventually got to be too much. I've shelved my WM phone and bought an iPhone. Seriously, I believe it is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Good luck!

XV6800 (Radio 3.42.50) - No GPS on custom ROM.

I've got a refurbished Verizon XV6800 that had the latest Verizon ROM installed (radio 3.37).
I unlocked with No2chem SPL 2.47 and flashed a GPS PPCKitchen ROM.
The phone is flashed for cricket.
I can not get GPS to work. I upgraded the radio to 3.42.50.
GPS stil does not work. I added GPS toggle and quick GPS but they did not help either.
I've read about the Verizon MR1 update and how GPS would not work after it is installed.
Am I able to put the Verizon 6.0 ROM on it?
I thought that would downgrade to a non-GPS radio, and that could brick the phone?
I've searched this awhile now, and can't find a specific set of instructions for a GPS enabled Verizon to get GPS working with a custom ROM.
If I can flash a pre-MR1 Verizon ROM, where would I find it?
Thanks for any help.

I've read this thread, but it was written before GPS roms, and I don't think it addresses the issue of downgrading radios from 3xx (3.42.50, in my case).

The stock rom contains the downgraded radio as well.
Thanks for your help, but I need to know.
I've heard going back to a non-GPS radio is really dangerous (this is a non-GPS radio, right?)
Just don't want to brick it.
It's very hard to brick this phone. I am one of the few that have, but, wasn't due to software issues, it was hardware. I've gone down to stock plenty of times and it's not that hard. In order for you to use a custom ROM WITH gps and yer trying to flash from a stock 6.1 rom, you HAVE to flash back to a 6.0 rom and then upgrade from that or gps will not work. Check out the guides mentioned above and the guide in the wiki.
Thanks for the advise, folks.
I will...(gulp)...give it a try.
If you hear screaming from the direction of Dayton, Ohio you'll know why.
lol
Thanks again.
i think i heard screaming already do you need us to call an ambulance?
I downgraded, and then upgraded successfully.
Now I just need to see if GPS is working.
>>EDIT<<<
GPS is working! Thanks so much for the help guys! I've done about 12 Moguls, but this was the first VZW one, so it was a new problem for me.
..but there is something weird. My data connection keeps starting up by itself.
I done everything as I always do, but I've never had this quirk before.
Could it be a radio problem?
Thanks.

With every ROM I've used including all the official Telus ROMs I'm pretty sure the data connection always connects by itself...
The only application I had that wouldn't start a data connection on it's own was SBSH Weather (it had a specific option to automatically establish a data connection).
I've been fighting a similar problem, trying to learn ppc kitchen.Every rom I've made can't get the data connection to stop, keeps cycling back on

[Q] No GPS?!

Hey all, I've got a bit of an issue that I'd like some guidance on...
I recently had to swap my phone through BestBuy's "rapid exchange" program. For those unfamiliar with it, it basically means I get a refurb phone instead of my broken one. At any rate, I got it, tested and made sure basic functions were normal, then rooted away. I got the phone S-OFF using the "wire trick" got the ENG HBoot on it and got CM 10.1 courtesy of Team Hydra and "Wild for the Night."
Now, I didn't think to test GPS. When it came the time for me to use it, it doesn't seem to work. I know it's worked for me before on a phone with the same setup and there's no published issues with GPS that I could see on the ROM page. However, I just reset my phone to factory with the RUU and GPS works fine!
I did have some issues getting my ROM to boot up because I sorta loaded a full backup from a different phone and corrupted my WiMAX. However, I used RUU to restore back to factory and did it over and it fixed the ROM issues. Since then, the only problem I've had is with GPS.
I really don't know what the deal is here. Any help is more than greatly appreciated! :fingers-crossed:
