anyone get the error message of unknown device when plugging in their wm 6 phone to a laptop, happens to me on vista homepremium and xp, both up to date. this happens about %50 of the time
I bet your USB port on the laptop is not supplying enough current (borderline, hence why it works sometimes). Try one of the following things, first try the connection while the laptop is on AC power (not internal battery). Second, do you have a double USB port adapter? This is a cable that plugs into your external USB device on one end, and has a Y-connector that plugs into 2 USB ports on your laptop, thus increasing the current capability. If either one of these suggestions solves the problem then it means the laptop is not able to supply enough current on one USB port, a common problem.
I had the same problem and found it to be a firewall issue
Ofcourse it could be a firewall issue or any issues with loading of drivers and services. A soft-reset on the device and a PC Restart will solve most of the case!
Regards,
Carty..
How would a PC Restart make your firewall accessible, I located the SmcGui.exe (symantec) created a shortcute, and use that to disable to firewall whenever I want to connect

hi guys thanks for the advice, however, i have since updated to vista ultimate and now get the following issues. xp seems to have sorted itsself out, however vista has problems installing the drivers for my phone. it says on the phone check usb cable and on the laptiop i get the symbol in the sys tray for unrecognised device. the phone will sync fine, just not allow internet sharing.(i am using a 2.0 usb port and my mobile device centre is up to date, i downloaded all the vista updates today)
my firewall has been turned off, but i believe its a driver issue as thats whats showing on the screen device not recognised.
any ideas?
For Internet Sharing in Vista, you need to install WMDC.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx
i have it installed, i tried changing from official rom to black satin and a few others and it still does the same. the mobile device centre will sync then i turn on the internet sharing and it installs the drivers for "unknown device". had a word with the t-mobile connectivity team who took a look at the laptop and phone, tried it on other laptops with the same result. vista doesn't like the internet sharing bit. tried the usual stuff like taking off the advanced network functionality etc.
oke here is what u gotta do :
for windows vista:
-reboot computer without wm6 device connected
-install mobile device center 6.1 (the drivers ^^)
-reboot
-wipe all activesync connections on wm6 device and vista
-disconnect device and see if advanced networking is enabled (USB to PC .. in networksettings wm6)
-set connectionssettings in mobile device center from automatic to Internet
-goto networksettings on wm6 device and choose connections
-tap advanced and select networks : both set to My ISP
-connect wm6 device and wait till it finished .. take some minute or so
installing drivers and things
-when its done unplug device and reboot computer (yes again, and i am not
going to explain why this is so important as you should know by now)
-wait for the computer to boot untill it finished (vista this take 2 minute at least)
-connect wm6 device and setup proper sync partnership
-goto connectionsettings in mobile device center and check all boxes and set it to internet if it is not allready set.
-wait for the device to do its stuff
-it will strangely reconnect after a while and internet works again
notes:
kaspersky 7 : -turn of the kaspersky protocol on the networkadapter of wm6
-allow acces to svhost when it asks for it.
norton 360: -no problem found .. maybe you need add LSP to trusted
networks
internet+wmdc 6.1
double post ...
moderator remove this please
hey dajojo yer guide is great , i tried it and unfortunately, it connected for about 30 seconds and went straight back to usb device not recognised.
when it was connecting it should show up as "generic rndis internet sharing windows mobile device" or something similar.
any further assistance would be great.
m running vista home premium 32 bit (went back to it from ultimate)
Finally Solved!
Hi there!
Seems to be the same problem on HTC Dual!
try this
go to start>settings>system>power>advanced
if the checkbox "When device is turned on, do not charge battery when connected to PC" is checked uncheck it and tap ok! Then go back again and check the checkbox again and tap ok again. and the ActiveSync software will sync all data!
Hi,
A friend gives me a Qtek S200 G4 WM5 with IPL 2.09.0001 and SPL 2.09.0001
But the USB doesn't work, it's detected as unknown device (checked in 4 windows XP)
With an USB tool i can see that it's HarwareID = USB\UNKNOWN, the same with CompatibleIDs = USB\UNKNOWN
by this the XP doen'st found any drivers avilable (yes I have ActiveSync installed)
I stay in the same situation in 3 colour bootloader mode, when I put the USB cable in the Qtek it marks USB at left bottom but the Windows XP only detect the usb connection as an unknown device.
What can I do?
There is another form to upgrade to WM6 and upgrade the SPL,
some direct SERIAL access to testpoints/pins ??
Anything can give me a clue!!
Thanks.
Just as first,
uninstall the unknows device of your hardware config, connect the phone again, and install the drivers manually, so dont use auto install...
when u have done this, just remove the cable out of the phone, and put it in again after 30 seconds.
if it's ok, it will be ok.
from then on you can flash your phone!
...
if its not working your bootloader is ****ed up, or try another USB port on the pc otherway your cable or port(on phone or PC)) will be not good...
...
other way to do it, just install windows xp pro insteed of home...
install active sync, and put the usb cable in the pc and in the phone, it will help alot...
...
It can be that u have to try another cable if u buy an mp3 player or digital camera, almost all cables are the same as the usb cable of the prophet you can try this cables also to get it working!!
Windows XP Home edition doesnt find this drivers everytime.
Windows XP Pro will have no problems at all...
which driver should be installed manually ? is there any driver for download ?
I have exactly the same problem...
I´m still trying to figure whats wrong, but getting help is difficult sometime...
I'm using Vista to flash 'PDAVIET_ROM_WM61_OS20765_ATOM_Sonblack' but I was disconnected from Windows Mobile Device Center. Now my Atom cannot reset, cannot sync and STUCK with message 'Update Utility'!
Please help me to get back my Atom!
Thank you so much!
Use rec + camera + reset button.
In DM mode choose Exit DM.
weird! it works on winXP but not in Vista!
anyone know why?
Lots of things could be causing your problem. Here are some things for you to try:
1. MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure that you plug your device directly into the computer. Do not plug the device into a USB hub or other device. If you are using a laptop, do not plug the device into USB ports in your docking station. More technically, make sure that the port you are using is a Root USB device, not a Generic USB one. This make quite a difference in Vista, because locking your computer or having a UAC prompt while you are connected to a generic USB device seems to interrupt the connection.
2. Make sure that you have "Advanced Network Funcationality" enabled.
2. Make sure that you have the latest version of ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista). If you are using Vista, the current version is 6.1. This version has some updated drivers that seems to help immensely with stability.
3. If you are using Vista, make sure you have all the latest OS updates installed. There was a Windows Update sometime back in November of 2007 that fixed some serious bugs in the USB drivers in Vista.
4. If you have Windows Firewall Client for ISA installed, do a search on the Microsoft website for possible problems with interactions between ActiveSync/WMDC and the firewall client.
Hope this helps.

You must be careful with connection whenever you flash your rom. Never disconnect when the process is still going on.
This is what I think you should do to try to rescue your Atom.
1. Make sure that your Atom can really communicate with your PC. As long as they show that they're connected is ok.
2. Flash that rom again. This time please make sure that there will be no disruption on the connection. Don't disconnect while the process is going on or you'll have a high chance of transforming your Atom into a toy.
You have to follow the instruction and wait until the end of the process. I've flashed many roms without any single problem.
3. You better flash using direct connection. Don't flash from your SD but directly from your PC.
Hope this helps!
I was upgrading from WM 6.1 to 6.5. During the installation of ROM, my phone felldown and disconnected from CRADLE. After that, i get multi-colored screen showing,
" RUUNBH
NIKI200 MFG
SPL-1.15.Hard
Serial"
When i try to connect with USB, it shows USB from Serial. But this mobile is not detected in my PC. When i try to update from ROMUpdate utility - any version, as this mobile is not detected, i can't do the upgrade.
I tried resetting -sfot reset, hard rest, switched off and restarted my mobile - no help - same scenario - mobile shows the multi colored screen.
anyone faced such scenario... please help me out?

The only thing i know is that Activesync doesn't recognize your mobile when in rainbow screen. I have had the same problem you have last night. Was updating when the usb disconnected. When i attache thee Htc to my pc in rainbow mode i hear the connect sound in windows!!!that's when you do the rom update. (turn of the usb mode in Activesync to be sure).
This worked for me last night so i hope i helped you. And otherwise: there are a lot of guru's here that will help you out 4sure. That's why i love this place.
ps the reason for turning of the usb mode in Activesync is because sometimes (in my case) the plug and play usb app and activesync have a little bit of an compatibility problem when my touch dual is in rainbow modus.
You're correct.
Thanks you're correct. I found it was a issue with Activesync. Only once it connected with USB and i tried formatting with MTTY (commands from XDA).
After formatting the device, now it's not letting me to flash any ROM on it? First after rebooting the device, it takes me to ROM splash screen, later it's not getting detected in USB & in PC?
Without detecting device, i am not sure, how i can proceed further? Not sure, i bricked my device (i heard about XDA Kaizer Repair ROM's - flash it into SD cards and overcome this issue)?
Can anyone advise me?

hi,
thanks for the response. i have already tried these,
1. changed the cable and tried different ports of the computer
2. hard resetting the phone
3. uninstalled and reinstalled the wmdc
4. restarted laptop while phone is connected and vice versa
5. connected phone in bootloader mode. it said "serial". no change after connecting
phone.
6. checked with different computers
nothing worked. still it says "usb device not recognised"
what else can i do?
would a new rom flash via the micro sd help? my hd2 already has the custom rom installed. so i guess no need to install hspl.
