Windows Live for Windows Mobile FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I install this product on a Storage Card?
Why am I seeing duplicate contacts when I choose to save Windows Live contacts on my device?
How do I get Messenger?
How can I improve my battery life when using the software?
Q: What's different between Pro and Standard:
A: The PRO version are for PPC and the standard is for SP's
Q: Can I install this product on a Storage Card?
A: No, Windows Live can currently only be installed to your device’s internal storage. Storage cards are not supported for this application as it extends several Windows Mobile features.
Q: Why am I seeing duplicate contacts when I choose to save Windows Live contacts on my device?
A: Upon first time sign in to Windows Live, if you choose to save Windows Live contacts to your device’s contacts store, they will then be accessible via the Windows Mobile Contacts application and will appear alongside the contacts you have created on your device (either manually, via Microsoft Outlook, or via Exchange ActiveSync). If you did not check "Merge duplicate contacts", Windows Live contacts that have the same First Name and Last Name as contacts already on your device will appear as duplicates. If you checked "Merge duplicate contacts", a merge will take place but there will still be likelihood that some of your Windows Live contacts may not be merged correctly.
Q: How do I get Messenger?
A: This version of the software does not include Windows Live Messenger. Access to Messenger is typically provided by your mobile operator. Please inquire with your mobile operator about Messenger access.
Q: How can I improve my battery life when using the software?
A: Windows Live for Windows Mobile requires a permanent data connection if you have your "Sync Frequency" set to "As Items Arrive," resulting in potentially high battery drain on certain devices if you receive lots of e-mail. If you experience excessively short battery life, you can take steps to increase it. To improve your battery life, you can set your "Sync Frequency" to something other than "As Items Arrive." This action will extend battery life, though "your mileage may vary" depending on how you use Hotmail and how much mail you receive.

Actually it does work on Wifi. I can download Hotmail emails fine with wifi.
still looking, can't seem to find anything about it.
Battery Drain.....
Watch out for battery drain issue. I had it on "As Item Arrives" and it sucked the life out of my battery in no time at all. I changed it to check every hour and now all is well.
Could somebody be so kind to post a kitchen package for this? Some of us might like to cook this into our ROMS. Of immediate need would be the WWE version.
But in this version, there is no Windows Live Messenger
So, what does the "Spaces" part of this cab give you? I installed it and did not see anything about "Spaces" (other than the about box showing it listed). I also ended up losing MSN Messenger.
Also, why can MSN Messenger be included - getting it from your carrier I am not sure how to do (or even if they offer a stand alone installer).
Can you install this on top of one of the versions of Windows Live and retain Messenger?

Hi
If anybody is interested in having RIM Blackberry + loads more functionality on an XDA, please take a look at - [http://www.a2000d.com/Duality_Always-On_Mail.htm] This is a server based product & suitable for 10 or more users.
Cheers
John[/url]
Wow, that's a lot of complexity to do something that's essentially already built into the device.
Hi, I think you may have missed the point somewhere along the line, sorry if I didn't make things clearer. This is full GPRS PUSH email which the XDA, in it's native form, isn't capable of.
Hope this helps.
No real difference. It keeps the GPRS connection open, just like keeping it open and having your mail software check for mail every five minutes. No effective difference, unless your e-mail is so important that you can't wait five minutes. But then you could set it to check once a minute.
It's not a true push in the sense that the server can't initiate the inbound connection.
Something pretty similar and cheap could be set up quite easily. The basic problem is that the XDA can't hold a GPRS connection permanently. You don't see the advertising bunf about 'always on connections' any more.
You could get blackberry-like functionality with two simple apps: one that runs on your exchange server that gets an SMS gateway to send you an SMS in a particular format when you have mail that hasn't been retrieved for a few minutes. And one that sits on the XDA checking incoming SMSs and when the 'check your mail' message comes in, starts attempting to start a GPRS connection and poll your server.
I agree with Andy. In fact I just noticed that T-Mobile are offering this very capability to all e-mail subscribers right now. The PPC client has to have an additional option ('my alerts') that has the specific functionality aka: read the 'hidden' SMS message and go and retrieve the mail.
Only problem seems to be that this additional option in the WM2003 e-mail client is not available as a separate download, but built into the ROM image. Seems that the only device that has it built in right now is the new HP PPC phone. I enabled this service on my t-mobile account and I receive the special SMS message fine, but my XDA e-mail client is not smart enough to recognize the special SMS message and then go an pull the mail down. I still have to do it manually. Still we are getting close to 'psydo push' e-mail I guess!! Does anyone know of an e-mail client for the PPC that has this functionality built in to it???
Look ay iAnywhere's Pylon Anywhere solution, it is better.
Only US $634 for five users (includes server back-end and client software), runs of Exchange or Notes. As for clients, it provides support for a broad range of handheld devices, including Palm OS, Microsoft Pocket PC and Smartphone, Symbian OS, SyncML, and WAP-based devices. Even supports RIM devices.
Communication is fully encrypted!

It provides three connection types; ReadySync, network push and SMS push - of course you can manually sync as well.
Most of the providers (mobile) use some sort of SMS push to triggger your device to sync to get new mail. This solution supports that, if you want it. The network push is real-time, if something triggers the monitoring server it immediately has your device sync that information type. Pylon Anywhere can monitor and sync Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, Calendar, Contacts, Notes. From both the client and server sides.
There are a ton more features that are incredible, like killing (hard reset) a device remotely if stolen/lost. I will have a review up by the end of the week, will post here (if I can).
Thanks Nighthawk. Looks pretty interesting and quite a bit cheaper than the Intellisync product I have been looking at.
I have downloaded the documentation and am thinking about doing the 30 day trial, but I am a bit confused about the various hardware requirements. All I use right now is a WIN XP laptop with MS Outlook for mail. My mail is POP 3 from BellSouth and I have a DSL connection to the Bellsouth account via a dynamic IP address.
It looks like that to install the PylonAnywhere server, I am going to need MS Exchange, a static IP address and my own domain..... Am I reading that right, or can I simpy install the PylonAnywhere server software on my laptop and point it to the BellSouth POP 3 account for my mail? Any idea?
Many Thanks!
CB
Yep, this is a server based system. Connects to your exisiting Exchange or Notes mail server(s).
You sound like your just connecting to your own desktop, hmmm.
You might want to look at Smartner's Duality Professional edition or Internet Edition.
Go here: http://www.smartner.com/products/professional.html
These two are based on a single user concept vs. enterprise.
Hope that helps, let me know how things go.
Yes, I came across the Smartner product in my sesrches too. Does not appear to be available in the USA form some reason... In fact the licencing agreement actually precludes you from installing it if you live in the USA. Must have some kind of licencing problems I guess.
...?
I saw that while looking at their web site, kinda concerned me :?:
One could only speculate as to why, since not listed anywhere.
I think you can still DL the trial vesion off their site thoguh. If not, check out Handango, they have two versions listed (one a monthly contract).
Hi Nighthawk.
Yes, I did manage to download the trial, but it seems to be the 'enterprise' version, with functionality and architecture very similar to Intellisync and Pylon. I did not see a trial for any of the basic connectivity versions... I think I will call Smartner on Monday and see what the deal is with the licensing. I suspect it may be some kind of patent issue with one of the other providers... I'll let you know what I find out.
To download the Enterprise trial I had to request it via an e-mail, awaiting responce.
The Handango version is the Professional version, you can DL a trial version (doing it now).
Definately let me know what you find out from them, thanks.
Hey..
Smartner Duality is quite a good package for RIM like functionality. I bought the professional version a couple of months ago. It was easy to install etc. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it only does e-mail. It doesn't sync your calendar/todo. Their Enterprise edition is the only one that will do calendar/todo. Other than that it works great.
I'm definately thinking about trying Pylon Anywhere after reading this thread 'cause I want calendar/todo syncing... And quite cheaper that Duality Enterprise's smallest license.
Thanks Nighthawk. I think the professional was the version I downloaded from Handango. It looked like it still required an exchange server, but I stopped when the licence agreement said 'NO' to installing in USA... I'll let you know what they say... In the mean time, do you know of any 3rd party e-mail apps for PPC that are more reliable for checking the POP 3 server? The Pocket Outlook app time interval ba ed checking seems very intermittant and unreliable.
am-imate,
If you have any questions about Pylon Anywhere just let me know, more than happy to help. The server install is pretty easy, you will need Outlook 2000 w/SP2 (only) and java installed for the machines (server) browser.

Well Nighthawk, I have a question on all this, a kind of « question asked by a dummy » for I know little but not enough to make my way through all the material posted here.
I would like to create a Blackberry like function on my XDA. I’ve looked at this post and got some part of it very clear. The rest remain quite unclear.
My company uses MS exchange server in the office and I have a PC with Outlook on XP on my PC. My company already uses blackberry solution which I do not have but would like to uses my XDA instead to avoid duplication of hardware.
If my understanding is correct,
1. I need to install Pylon Anywhere (or some other application) on my XDA to collect my new mail.
2. I need to liaise with my Mail server administrator to have the server send my XDA a special SMS to silently trigger the synchronization process.
3. I will use on my XDA ActiveSync Inbox to read my mail on my XDA.
Now, this seems to be too simple. Did I put all the pieces in the right place?
Email Push
I'm using the Mnotes program on my i-mate for Lotus Notes wireless push. It works well, the push works flawlessly and doesn't require installation on the server-just my desktop which acts like a server for my handheld. I also have it working through our firewall using a Movian VPN(v4.0). All of this works through my gprs connect.
The only downside is that an incoming or outgoing call interrupts the gprs and the VPN disconnects and must be manually re-connected. on i-Mate

Pylon Anywhere requires a server back-end, meaning you must install a Pylon Anywhere server into your network. This server connects to your companies Exchange/Notes server. It then communicates with the Pylon Anywhere client software on your device, after you have it installed by the server.

To help spread booksync please become a fan.
I you are feeling really generous please consider donating by clicking here
Thanks
Mike.
Thanks for making such a great app.
So far, I haven't been able to get the Birthday Sync to work. Would it matter if my friends have their birthdays hidden?
Hi, thanks for your support.
Facebook just return the birthday as a string made up of all the parts the friend has allowed access to. I attempt to parse that and only update if a full date can be found.
So sorry if people are hiding their year of birth they wont update.
Mike
Does what it says on the tin.
Very nice, and very useful. Thank you for making this available.
This looks very very good -- and I've tried every "Facebook to Outlook or Windows Mobile" app out there.
Really looking forward to:
* Higher resolution contact photo's
* Ability to select which of the matched contacts get sync'ed (so "matched" doesn't equal "sync'ed")
* Option to not sync pictures (if you just want to sync birthdays, for instance): I have a number of friends whose Facebook profile pictures aren't as nice as the contact pictures I've given them...
If you find the time:
* More things to sync, like home address, work, Facebook groups to Outlook categories... (if possible)
* Individual sync settings for each contact that are stored for future sync'ing so it can really be used as an automated process.
These are just to inspire you, it's not a list of demands!

The pictures being sync'd are the highest quality pics that can be sync'd. Facebook gives you a few options to select from (square, small, big, normal), from feed back from mainly htc users I select the biggest picture possible to sync with. This is dependent on the image that the friend uploads of course.
Your other point about selecting which contacts to sync has been mentioned before. I plan to redesign the UI to include this. I'm an asp.net/win forms developer who originally wrote booksync for myself and decided to release it then it took on a mind of its own from feedback etc.
The redesign of the UI may take a bit of time as I learn so will be included in future release.
I will investigate how much can be sync'd.
Would really love for phone number and email address but these are not available.
Thanks for your feedback its just what I was after
Nice work. Thanks!
Wow. Ill give it a roll. Looking forward to the update you mention with choosing which pictures
Outlook Birthdays (if not given the year can be done by adding the "current year" but that should also be optional.
I have tried it and loving it.
I only have to fix the file as after I am done syncing.
It would also be nice to import facebook contacts as well even if it is just a link to their web adress such as www.facebook.com/friend that way the contacts can be integrated into PIE as well.
any chance you also use myspace?
I have been switching over, but some of my friends have not. In fact, I have a lot more friends on myspace than on FaceBook.
thanks for sharing this great app.
Thanks.
Will look at working create contacts into a future release.
As for myspace I will have to do some investigating around their api (if they have one) I dont use myspace so not played around with it.
i installed it but uninstalled it on my htc touch pro...it worked once for me then it kept on crashing. i never got it to work since the first sync..not sure why...

I got a minor problem of the login page not really fitting on my QVGA screen and no scroll bars to adjust. the size of the fonts are good, but I have to use the tab key to select the password and logn button. also have to fix file as in my contacts.
Login page needs the most work.

yea it says some type of program error and crashes...other then that it worked nicely on the first try....but until this is fixed i will wait again...great work on it tho..i just wished that it synced everything that the fonebook app does which works similar
Having some issues as it looks like everything is fine but it just sits with the "Syncing..." message on screen but does nothing, even after half an hour.
I was hoping to remove the link to the first contact in case it's just his contact causing the issue but I can't see a way. I ven uninstalled but it's retained the link. Where are the settings stored so I can start from fresh?
Hi,
The picture quality is actually pretty ok. Much better than what you get when adding pictures in (desktop) Outlook.
Thanks for considering my suggestions. The option to select which of the matched contacts are sync'ed will be a great enhancement, I hope you get it done.
What would also make me happy is the option not to sync pictures, and being able to choose this for each contact individually... some of my friends have really ugly profile pics.
Creating new contacts from unmatched Facebook friends, as someone suggested, is a really good idea as well. Somehow your program feels really promising. I think that's why a lot of people are rooting for you to make it into a full-fledged Facebook-to-Contacts sync solution (not just pictures). Too bad Facebook doesn't make phone numbers and e-mail adresses available, but well, that's how it is.

One more thing... From time to time, Booksync stops working: it starts up, tries to log in, then throws an error each time.
I noticed that by removing the <SessionKey> line from the settings file, I could get the program working again.

Where is the BookSync Settings file
It's under 'Program Files/BookSync' and is called 'settings.bss'. Removing the entire settings file would work too, but then you'd have to re-match all you contacts. If you only delete that single line in a simple text editor, you can keep the rest of your settings.
Hope it works for you too.

Hi. I just bought a Tab 8.9 (and boy do I love this thing). Being an avid Tab 7" user though, I'm kinda missing the phone functionality (I was aware of that beforehand).
What I didn't know, that the 8.9 is perfectly capable of receiving and sending SMS on its own. That was a pleasant surprise up until I noticed NONE of the SMS forwarding apps in the market that I'm aware of are supporting this tab. I planned to use my primary SIM card in the 8.9 tab and use it for everything else short of actual phone calls. But I usually leave the Tab in my car and/or home when I go to shops, visit friends and such. I would still like to receive incoming sms at those times.
On my SGS2 I used a program called "Phone Control" to achieve this (SMS arrived via gmail even when I left SGS2 in the dock at home/car and had another phone with me). But Phone Control requires a dialer to use and isn't listed as compatible with the tab anyways.
Is there an app that forwards incoming SMS to email (preferably GMail) that works on Honeycomb, specifically Galaxy Tab 8.9"?
I'm trying to achieve just one simple thing. On incoming SMS, the device would automatically forward it via email to my gmail account. Nothing more, nothing less.
Have you tried DeskSMS?

Hello - can you try PhoneLeash (Android Market, free)? Its targeted at 2.2/API 8, so your Tab should be fine. G'luck!

"This item is not compatible with your device."
I guess it has something to do with the Tab not being a phone, although capable of text messaging. I guess Android Market looks at permissions and if it has anything to do with calling/dialing/messaging/etc, it automatically disqualifies Android 3.x devices not explicitly allowed (like the new 7.x" Tabs, for example). This is just a guess though, might be something else.

Thanks for trying ... I _think_ I know what could be going on. PhoneLeash looks for a number of capabilities, but all except one are optional: "telephony". I could send you an APK privately, and if that works for you (and doesn't break on other phones) we could post the update on the market. Let me know via email to support -xATx- gearandroid -xD O T-x com

Hi folks:
PhoneLeash v 1.5 is now posted to the Android Market. I am little tired now, so with your permission I will forward you to this post, as well as to this detailed review from a helpful forumperson (and response).
@ AnttiV: PhoneLeash can now forward to SMS destinations (another phone, Google Voice, Skype) and in this mode there is no need for email-to-SMS capability. I think PhoneLeash is the only app that worked on your Tab 8.9 so I am hoping this will help somewhat.
Hi folks,
I have tried out the PhoneLeash v1.5. The sms forwarding function worked in my Xoom with Android 3.1. I suppose the other apps will catch up, but as per now, it might be the only one working with Tablet running Honeycomb and without the telephone function.
Hi folks - PhoneLeash 1.7 is now on the Market.
Here's some details on new features etc.
Many new features, but the SMS to email link is really good now ... we've tried our best to make an SMS look and act like an email, when in email. Threads are retained and turned into Gmail conversations (when forwarding to Gmail). The "email" sender name is the name and/or phone number of the SMS sender etc.
You can even export SMS to email, and create a mirror in the email world. Looks like this.

Hey guys!
I just lost my phone right now, and I want to remove my play store account remote by using my computer, and connecting through my stolen phone.
Anyone knows how to do that?
Change the passport on the website maybe.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I think there is a way to remotely track or reset, maybe try that..
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
How do I remotely track my phone and delete my account?
I don't know about tracking your phone, but head here and:
Change your password: Security->Change password
Remove any Android stuff from authorised applications: Security->Authorising applications and sites - Edit
After that, your phone shouldn't be able to sign into your Google account.
Thanks a lot for the info.
Just a quick question. I saw some on my list which had "Android" and something more, don't remember, plus I saw "Android - full account access" or something. Does it mean if I remove the list, it will definitely totally remove my account on my old devices which was stolen completely off?

Unfortunately, your account won't be removed from the phone (so data like cached Gmail emails will probably be still visible), but the phone will not be able to sign into your account to download apps etc. (especially paid apps), read your new emails and so on

If tiu check your email related to your account and check if you have anything bought ,you should put a lock screen on the phone next time tho, you could also put a password on play store(go to the app and settings )

It's a pretty amazing app, I have it on all Android devices in my stable. It's EXTREMELY powerful and easy to use at that. If I were in your current situation and had Cerberus onboard, I'd login via Web interface, activate tracking, lock the screen, then set it to take a picture with the FF camera as soon as the phone is touched. Once the screen is touched the pic will be emailed to your gmail, then I'd activate the alarm and have a message that says, "I know where you are...." flashed on the screen along with the screeching alarm sound. When they try to stop the alarm, another pic would be taken.
Once the pics are done and the fun with the alarm and message is over, I'd remotely wipe the sd card and begin trying to make way to the phone. All else fails send the wipe phone command and then call Sprint and report it stolen so they kill data and voice services.
Good luck man!
Kid you not, it's simple to do all that, even from someone else's phone.

You might consider Cerberus.
For a lowly 4$ you can remotely track your lost phone/call it/take pictures/record audio/wipe the sd card n much more...

Hello!
I'm glad to introduce a "Speech Shopper" app: very simple shopping list with voice input.

App idea belongs to my lovely wife Natalia: she's tried a few shopping lists from the Store but wasn't satisfied by any of these apps. She asked me for a long time to make this app and finally I couldn't resist
The app UI is very simple and intuitive (I don't think it needs additional comments or explanation). Just one important design issue: MS speech recognizer can recognize only the words already submitted by API call. So, it can't recognize the unknown words, you need to add 'em to the database manually. Sorry for inconvenience but it's not a my fault.
The app already has two languages shopping database, English and Russian. You can obtain the database (actually, it's a plain text file) by synchronizing data to the OneDrive.
If you want to share your updated database, or make a translation to your language (for this app I'll accept only languages supported by WP7 speech-to-text and text-to-speech), please contact me here in forum or my PM.

Please don't forget to rate 5 stars and write a good review (of course if you like this app)!
Thank you and enjoy!
Good Job.
I can translate for french user
Thanks
Great! Could you also make a French specific goods list (database)? I'll PM you an instructions later.
"Speech Shopper" updated to ver 1.1: fixed bug with OneDrive data restoration. Big thanks to titi66200!

(sorry for late response) Thanks for offering, I sent you a PM with details.
Application received update with critical bug fix (if voice services file for current language is missing, application crashed on start). Also French and Spanish translation was added.
P.S. Sorry to my dear translators: I don't have time to refactor "about" page to display your nicks/names! Deginitely will fix in the new release (this one was more about fixing critical issue).
Installed from Market and french version is Ok
Application got an update to version 1.4
Added:
- UK specific shopping items databae
- item deletion confirmation for database
- ability to send current shopping list via email
Hi,
App crash on Lumia 950XL.
When asking to login OneDrive.
When i tap for entering my name --> crash application
Just tested on L-950 (regular bits, no "insider"), working fine (as usual). Please try to reinstall (or/and - maybe - reboot handset)
Reinstall and same issue but i found that
If i switch phone to
Regional format: French -> not working
Regional format: English (US) -> working
Hmm, tried to reproduce but still working OK.
You have reinstall Speech Shopper and try to connect to One drive?
Nope, just changed regional settings to "France" as you've mentioned in your post.
P.S. BTW, app worked seamlessly before, right? When app stopped working?
"app worked seamlessly before, right?"
First use on 950XL.
app work's on my 1020 and not on my 830 (same issue).
Could you please check French language speech services (in settings)? Damn M$ still not released yet speech services for some langs supported on WP8.1 (what's why my wife should switch from Russian to English in the "Speech Shopper")
French language speech services is ok the issue in one drive
Thanks, my friend! It looks like an issue source is a MS middle-ware component to connect to OneDrive. I just call standard API from "Speech Shooper", nothing more!
P.S. Just tried to reproduce with fresh install - no issues found Looks like it's a French related only bug (I connected to my main live account from test handset without any issue)
@titi66200, could you please - just for the testing purposes - try to link another - le me say, a brand new - live account?
I trying with my wife live account and same issue
