I searched all over for a way to delete all my contacts without a hard reset or buying some program to do one process for me.
I ran across a post that had this info in it and it works beautifully.
You have to remove the pim file.
the pim.vol file is in the root of the file explorer, go into file explorer and and go all the way "up" and the file is at the bottom. just rename it to pim1 or anything you like. soft reboot and then go back to the root and you will have 2 pim files, pim and pim1, delete the one you renamed "pim1" and you will have no more contacts but will have a new pim file for your new contacts.
I deleted my relationships with my phone in ASync but when i re-hooked the phone up it added all the same ol contacts. I have many duplicate contacts and I want to get rid of them. any Ideas?
SKTools will take care of deleting contacts and deleting duplicates.

There's an easy way to remove duplicate contacts in Outlook. It does require some manual work, but if you type in "removing duplicate contacts" in the HELP section of Outlook, it will walk you through the process.
I dont know how I did it, but I sure deleted all of my contacts using active sync.

Hey, I have a Sprint TP. Want to put a custom ROM, but I 1st have to back up my contacts & other info. can some1 provide a link for a good back up program?
thx
this is a good one that everyone seems to like and use...

i personally use UC and copy the pim.vol that i backed up and copy over through sdconfg...or just use WMDC...
Try Microsoft MyPhone. Automatic backup and sync of contacts, pics, text msgs or anything you choose. It backs up and restores my contacts (200+) in less then 45 seconds.
MyPhone is excellent but it doesn't work properly if you have Outlook synced to an exchange server. I use PIM Backup for contacts and MyPhone for text messages.

+1 for pimbackup
+2 for PIM backup. Really fast, program is only like 200 kb.

I use SPB backup to restore my contacts and \my docs\ folder Well worth the $ I paid for the full version. You can run scheduled backups and they also have an app to unpack a backup on your PC.
pimbackup is capable of that as well.
+3 on the pim backup...only one i tried and it works aces...tho i strictly only do my contacts and appointments.
i would say that we need a list of everything that you want to back up. if it's just contacts and calendar backing up your pim.vol file manually is rediculously easy (i've done it by accident before). how ever if you want to back up more than that then you will probably want another program. so yeah, let us know exactly what you want to back up.
MyPhone has trouble with hanging on some of the contacts. I just synced my phone with my GMail contacts and calendar so I'll let you know how it goes when I hardreset next time.
Microsoft My Phone
My phone from microsoft is the realy way to go man, Crashed my computer and had bad rom on phone. Myphone stores on the cloud so its always available. Saved my ass and all my business contacts.

I backed up my contacts and text messages just before I did my 2.1 update. I tried restoring the contacts and nothing shows up in my phonebook. So I tried it a few times and still nothing.
But when I go into my messages and add recipient it shows my contacts and in fact shows them a few times because I tried the restore 4 times.
So 2 questions:
1. How do I get contacts to show in phonebook (yes I removed the battery and rebooted many times)
2. How do I clear the multiple entries?

SE released an update to the backup and restore app but they failed to let anyone know that it just might be needed as after the update the default 2.1 app often fails to retrieve backups from 1.6. Lucky for me I caught the update before I moved to 2.1 generic. No big deal, but now I am unable to switch back to Rogers firmware (nothing lost really, but...)
As for the multiple entries - yeah, you get one for each synch account (google, SE, backup) and for each type (email, phone, ...) A little of a PITA but you can merge them.

I thought I had the latest backup and restore. How do I know if I have the latest backup and restore?
So what you're telling me is there is no fix for this. And I will have to it manually. OH GAWD....
How do I get my contacts that show up in the messaging app to show up in the phonebook. Without having to enter each one?
Perhaps you can do like this:
1. Make backup of your contacts in the Address book to a VCF file
2. Delete all contacts in the address book (open address book, press menu and select delete contacts (select all)
3. If you have a windows computer, import the VCF to outlook
4. Manually delete duplicates in outlook OR export to CSV (Comma separated Values) file
5. Import CSV to excel, delete duplicates and save as CSV again.
6. Import CSV to Outlook again OR just copy the CSV file to your phones memory card and the import it from Address Book again.
You can do more or less the same on Mac too.
Helpful ?

The problem is, no contact actually show up when I press the phonebook icon.
BUT
if I go into Text Messaging and I press new message then press add recipient all my contacts show up.
How come it doesn't show up when I press the phonebook icon?
Somebody wrote the following, might be worth a try: (he did not say what the problem was)
Contacts: I had a problem restoring my contacts using Backup & Restore (the natural option you'd think) but after hours of futile attempts it turned out that you need to restore them from within the contacts (go to Contacts, Menu, Import Contacts), not Backup & Restore.
I found this in another thread, did you try it ?

I have the same problem with my X10 mini pro. At last, I delete all my contact and manually write again 1 by 1. So sad. Fortunately I still have backup in my X10i. If there is a solution. Next time it will help.

I had Exactly the same problem and after a lot of fruitless searching and messing with the phone settings i ended up with the same solution as above.
Just posting to confirm the above works.
I'm gonna post the solution as a separate thread for others.
I had a similar problem so I went back to my backup and restored the contacts again. Problem is, now every contact has every number email, address, address, etc twice!
How can I fix that?

I ran into this problem, did restore from Backup and restore several times, got some contacts back, not all, with many duplicate numbers.
This is what I did, I was the one who posted this in another thread, btw:

If you are sure you have the backup on your SD card (it should be under sdcard/system/PIM/PIMXXXXX.vcf where X is the number ie 00001.vcf, etc)
Go to phonebook, contacts, menu, delete contacts.
After that:
Menu, Import contacts, Memory Card, Phone contact, then choose the backup if you have more than one backup made.
That's what I did and all my backups were restored.
different take on problem
I have my phonebook contacts working totaly fine.
my problem is when I go to add contacts when making a sms message the contacts there are not only what is in my phonebook but MANY WEBSITES (craigslist, email contacts and the like). I cannot seem to find an option for doing multiple deletion's.
cleaned sd card (as in deleted crap folders) - looked for file or folder where this information would be stored - no luck
am on xperia x10a - droid 2.1
Something happened (probably some kind of sync) and now I've got for almost every contact (this is the strangest part) all phone numbers duplicate. For some contacts, they (the numbers) have more than duplicated.
Is there a way to clean this mess?
i have this same problem
even if i try to delete ALL my contacts to start again it says it deleted them... but they are still there!.... then if u try to delete again u cant cos it thinks they are gone... but they are not.
The same thing happened to me.
Assuming you made a backup I think you should once again delete all your contacts, then go to phone, contacts, menu, import contacts, SD card.
They should be restored.
The duplicates happen when you restore/import your contacts more than once from both the memory card and your Google account.
Do you know if Titanium backs up contacts as well?
for me the problem is now that i cant delete all the contacts... i did delete them... but they are still there.... when i go to delete again it says "no contacts" but they are there..... arrrrrghhhh!!
anyone know where phonebook keeps its contact list? so i can go in and manually erase them all?
infact i can see now that my "phone contacts" are deleted but the "twitter" and "facebook" contacts are still in the phonebook... how can i remove them?
thanks
edit: i figured it out.... u need to go into phonebook > settings > timescape settings & account sync settings and the DELETE ur facebook / twitter accounts
Well... decided to delete them all and restore.
Also, I have disabled the auto sync.
Guess no more problems from now on...

If you backed them up using Titanium then it should be able to restore them.

The problem is you can not do Restore and then enable sync. I deleted all contacts then just enabled sync (g-mail), no problems since then.

I see no replies. I have 348 contacts with the @desksms.appspotchat.com in them. I'd love to know how to get rid of this unnecessary information.

Dude I have the same problem with my Google Talk after installing DeskSMS. I would receive a message like "@desksms.appspotchat.com wants to be able to chat with you, and you rejected a previous request. Okay?" I made the mistake of clicking yes and now I can't seem to remove them from my Google Chat list.
Very annoying!

I just figured it out. go to contacts.google.com & look for Other Contacts on the left-hand side of the screen. All of the appspot contacts are there & you can delete them.
If the previous solution didn't work, you have to re-download the app, there's a feature to remove the desksms contacts and it delete all of them. I did it and it looks all good so far.

Is this feature still there for others, because I have no feature to remove these contacts using the desksms application on my phone?
Ok, so in forgot to sync my contacts after I deleted the desksms contacts so they're back and the feature is gone from the app from what I can see. This sucks.

EDIT: Ok, so I found out a way to delete the contacts if anyone still cares about it:
1) Go to your google contacts
2) Click the "more" tab and export to both Google CSV (in case something goes wrong which it shouldn't) and Outlook CSV (to edit)
3) Open the Outlook CSV into Excel (should be default)
4) Edit to your hearts content!!! (and save!!)
5) Delete all your contacts, be thorough and delete every single thing (don't worry, you made a backup just in case, remember?)
6) Import your new and improved CSV file that you edited earlier and voila, all your regular contacts without the annoying desksms stuff (and anything else you decided to delete/edit)
If this didn't work or messed something else up then just delete everything again and restore the google csv (should be named google.csv I think) and your original contacts will be back.
Hope this works for you guys because it worked for me.
Aaaah. Thanks. Going into Contacts, selecting "Other" and doing a search for "appspotchat.com" showed me all of the contacts. Selected, deleted, done. Appreciate the pointer.
Is there a way to delete all my contacts? I've got a bunch of duplicates, and if I do a restore with SMS-Backup & Restore, all it does is add another copy of each.
(Ah, never mind...I found even if I can't figure out how to do it from my phone, I can do it online on the Google Contacts page...)
