GPS takes long to find satellites in Radio 3.39.10? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

It used to take me under 5 seconds to lock onto a satellite using 3.35 radio, now that I upgraded to the leaked 3.39 radio and DCD 3.1.2 rom it's taking exactly 13seconds to lock onto a satellite.
Does anyone have similar results or is it better for you? please post your times and comments thanks!

well it takes me around 10-12 seconds consistently with 3.39.10, whether indoors or outdoors, in any weather conditions. but, thats the best result i've ever had. 3.35 and 3.37 both took a minute or more to lock for me.

Have you tried something like QuickGPS? I know DCD has a cab for it in the kitchen 3.1.2 thread. It speeds it up a lot.

10-13 SECONDS.... are you kiddin me.... My friend, sometimes I have to wait a minute, so if you have to wait 13 seconds, please consider yourself lucky that your hardware locks on that fast....

i agree, the time you use to open up quickgps or some other program would be longer than waiting the 13 seconds...im happy if i get a lock after a minute or two. sometimes takes closer to 5...
10-15 seconds, I would love that on a consistent basis.

Ok I've been meaning to say something about this ever since the leak from Sprint enabled GPS on our phones...just haven't gotten around to it.
I'm willing to bet a MILLION dollars that I don't have that the gpsone chip in our phones has some sort of built in cache memory that stores the last long and lat coordinates.
It's so weird, EVERY time I flash to a new rom, or even flash the same rom over itself, when I load up Google Maps (brand new Google Maps with all the caches cleared obviously cuz of the flash), IMMEDIATELY the map shifts over to where I was last, THEN it tries to acquire satellites. Once the sats are locked, it updates to where I'm actually at.
I just wonder if there's any way to clear the cache LOL

I flashed the "Leaked" rom,DCD was right,it took about 10 seconds to find and locked for me,same as the 3.35 ROM.

I get a lock in 30 seconds using WiFiFoFum

takes about 10 seconds for me to get a lock...
i couldn't imagine getting a lock in under 5 seconds, and even if i did, getting one in 10 seconds, while being twice the time, isn't much of a real world difference.
i guess it would really matter if you were converting phones into missile guidance systems...

nevermind guys...i was testing it indoors and thats what gave me 13 seconds...im now in my car and googlemaps only takes 5 seconds to lock onto 8+ satellites. yay im happy again

No, there's a GPS chip in there. It looks very quickly sometimes under 10 seconds for me when in a decent coverage area.
I recently used it in an area where I had ZERO Sprint, Alltel, or Verizon coverage. Not a wiff of CDMA for many miles. The GPS worked great and tracked us with no issues.

i think you are misinterpreting his question. he did word it weirdly, but he said, hed be willing to be a million dollars that he doesnt have....
that the chip in his phone, etc...
obviously we have a gps chip in the phone, thats how we get gps coverage....
but ive tried to lock gps with no service, and havent been able to.
is this just bad luck on my part, or is there a way to get a gps lock in airplane mode, or in another country where i wouldnt have service.
thanks

Wow, I thought it was just me that noticed that. Glad someone else did too. I thought it had something to do with a small cache in the GPS chip as well.
BTW Speeds to lock:
3.27 - With DCD (Beta kitchen maybe, I forget) Hardly ever locked so I cant tell you. Got Locks maybe twice a day while trying 30 to 50 times a day.
Changed Moguls at this point due to my puppy eating it. Sorry didint think to grab pics as I had other things on my mind at that point.
3.27 - This was a band new hanset now and I flashed 3.27 and got the exact same results I did the with first handset.
3.35 - With DCD (3.0.1) - Not much better but more consistent locking. Times from 30 seconds (rare) to 5 minutes (average)
3.37 - (DCD 3.0.4) - Fast locks nearly every time, 30 to 60 seconds. First time ever reception indoors. Three sats in my basement office.
3.39 sprint upgrade with a DCD 3.0.4 - INSANELY Fast. After burning the sprint radio I swapped over to a DCD 3.0.4 ROM. You wont beleive this but I made my own OEM for GPS Today. It had 4 satellites even before the phone finished booting the first time! I am not joking! I was amped. Rebooted hard and soft, reloaded differnt roms, tried reverting back to old radio then testing then back again to 3.39. Same results I recieved the first time when I went back to 3.37. Then came back to 3.39 and it was just as fast as ever. This the most solid GPS radio I have ever seen, PERIOD. Faster than any mobile unit I have ever used.
Now what I am about to tell is somewhat of an oddity to me. During my flashng and reflashing of the radio I tried differnt methods. First I flashed back to Sprint 3.35 so I could get the HTC boot screens I liked and then I figured I would flash only the radio via SD. Formmated the card, loaded the ROM, rebooted and the flash went perfect. But this is where it gets odd. With all of the same ROMS noted above I couldn't get a lock at all! I actually had to reflash using the sprint 3.39 leak. I then flashed with a PPC kitchen to get rid of the boot screens this time. Then flashed my best brew of DCD 3.0.4 and this thing is still solid. I even let it sleep overnight, turn it on frist thing in the morning and it gets a lock in under 45 seconds!
(And yes I am sure the flash via SD was succesful)

ActiveSync sinking locks?
I've been using all of the DCD Rom's and have had various levels of locking success, but just ran into something odd - If ActiveSync is running - locks take much much longer, if ever, but if I completely close ActiveSync with task manager - I get locks in seconds. Has anyone else noticed this - and - is it possible to prevent ActiveSync from auto-starting?

I wonder if that is my problem. It takes my a painfully long time to get an initial GPS lock with 3.35 and DCD 3.04. Sometimes it is fairly quick, others it is over 1/2 hour.
However, I have Exchange email push running all the time so ActiveSync is constantly up and doing it's thing.
Quick question, Does QuickGPS need to be running in the background for it to help, or do I just run the update then close it down?

GPS works in Flight Mode!
I recently took a flight from Palm Beach to DC and decided to do a little test while on the plane. I turned on my phone and fired up my garmin mobile XT GPS. The first attempt it locked on to about 10 satelites in under 5 minutes and worked perfectly while in airplane/flight mode. Obviously you can't do this with Google Maps because the maps are downloaded via the data connection, which you don't have at 35000 feet! However it was pretty cool to see the speed of the plane (612 mph) and track my flight path. But to all who were wondering it does work!

I don't think you read my post carefully...I said it jumps to where I was LAST...not close to where I am. For instance, say I was in Boston and use the GPS, then I turn it off and go home and reflash a rom. All system settings are erased and all system caches are gone and everything is new. I then go to New York and turn the GPS back on, and it jumps to where I was in Boston before it locks any satellites. I was saying that this leads me to believe there is some sort of cache on the gpsone chip that stores last location coordinates or something.

That's weird. For me whenever i flash and go to Google Maps it always goes either to California (I'm in Mass) or it goes to a blue screen with the flashing blue dot. It's not always reliable which one but it's always one of the 2. Once i get my first fix though then whenever i turn my GPS on it DOES jump to the last position i was in.

No, when I FIRST load Google Maps, it starts up in California, but when I activate the GPS is when it goes to the cached position I was in last, until it locks on to the satellites, then it jumps to where I'm actually at.
There's gotta be a cache.

[Solved] Verizon + GPS + DCD 3.0.1 + Let Sprint Customizations Run

I'm back in a similar boat on GPS and I'm not able to get any GPS Sats to track at all.
I made a mistake and let the Sprint Customizations run from the Sprint ROM and I know that screwed some items up. I went back and reloaded the VZW ROM to get everything back by letting the VZW customizations run. Verified my Internet, etc and everything was fine.
Then, I reloaded the new radio/kitchen. Everything works flawless from Internet, ActiveSyncing, Bluetooth, etc. Except GPS.
I've got Location On, it's set for COM 4, etc.
I'm almost at a loss as to what's breaking the GPS piece since everything else is working fine. I'm perplexed because I've been using Garmin for a few weeks now without issue (minus the lengthy initial sync period).
Edit 3/12 11:43
- I ended up correcting this by going back and redoing the stock VZW Rom, removing battery, hard reseting and pretty much repeating that process all the way through until I got back to 3.5 Radio, same 3.0.1 DCD Rom and I'm back getting 6-7 satellites from my same window spot. Something had to be screwed up from the Sprint customizations, but all is well now.

Are you testing it outside or inside? I have this exact setup working. It started showing me in the wrong location so I had to move around for a minute or so. Depending on weather, buildings, trees, etc.. it may take a few minutes to lock into enough satellites to narrow down your exact location.
Also, did you use Quick GPS? This speeds up the locking in of the sats.
Yep, Quick GPS. Waited for about 20 minutes near my window. Even on the old rom, it used to take 2-3 minutes to sync up with 7-8 Satellites.

Some have said near a window didn't work for them. Others said it worked in their basement. For good measure I'd go outside away from buildings.
What prog are you using. I think the Holux prog I've seen posted around here or PPCG shows the actual locking in of satellites.
Attached is the tool I use to see what the GPS is doing. It's very simple and reliable.
After checking "start NMEA messages" you should see a log of GPS info being generated.
I also let the Sprint customizations run (although it quit on it's own and rebooted at about 2%). My GPS has been rock solid on dcd 3.0.0.
WI-FI forum as gps starter...
i dont'know if-it was told before but i put some additional packages in the dcd 3.0.0 kitchen like wifi-forum (was curious) and it have a gps fonction tath start the gps...it's not a big deal because it's take about 6X the ram of AstroGPSLauncher that i found the way to run with igo...
But if running WI-Fi-Forum anyway you can by-passer GPS launcher to keeps a little 60 k...

Radio 3.42.40 better reception than .50?

I decided to load the Telus ROM on VZW 6800. Flashed fine. Stopped customizations before running. Did not need an A-Key or any activation. Installed TomTom7.x and HTC GPS Tool. I then tested. I got a lock on TomTom 7 within 15 seconds EVERY time. I have used the GPS tool to clear memory and reapeted. Same results, 15 seconds or less. Next I took the battery out for about one minute and then tried again. Still 15 or less seconds!!!
I am worried I am seeing a placebo affect here. Can someone else try?
just came from .50 to this one and the gps is flying, also like it since i am a telus client. working well for me but notice little diff from .50 as both radios have been speedy as can be
this one works better for me on Telus too... .50 was not letting calls or texts through, but this one works great!
Again as many have said, it may in fact be placebo effect, but I'm getting a much better lock INDOORS now as well. So I'd have to say that it's an improvement.

Ok, great it wasnt just me. I have been on it for 24 hours now and its been pretty damn good. Failed to lock twice now. Radio .50 would fail about 1 time out of 4. This has a ratio of about 1 time out of 10. Much much better for me.
.50 has been the best radio rom for my mogul up to date.
Phone still won't get signal or GPS lock in my college but I wasn't expecting it to. That's all the testing I've been able to do so far
i haven't had any reception issues with either, but .40 doesn't randomly freeze the phone like .50 seemed to

Most stable GPS ROM?

I am having problems with stability with the GPS in my phone. I am not sure if it is an issue with the phone itself or with the ROM but I'd like to ask for some pointers
I am currently running DCD 3.3.4 with Radio 3.42.50.
I can use the GPS on the phone with no problem for one or two sessions and then the only way to get the GPS to respond is to take the battery out and wait a few seconds then put the battery back in. I have tried a soft reset but that doesn't solve the problem.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Sounds like you have a rom problem. I recommend to reflash. Because I have no problems with gps on 3.3.4.
i've tested all of DCDs roms quite a bit, and generally have always stuck with 3.2.5 and 3.2.6. im running .6 right now, and my gps locks instantly all the time. you can easily lock up the com port for your gps by letting your phone fall asleep while GPS is running, in an app that requires constant data. soft resetting should fix this. and youll know this has happened if Google Maps displays 'initializing GPS' for more than a couple of seconds. have you applied GCs aGPS fix? if so, have you made the necessary changes with new information? i recently noticed a drop in my GPS locks and discovered i had lost all my gpsone settings in a flash where i lost my akey. when i reapplied the fix, the IP address and port had changed.

I agree about 4.1.2 and the text message issue. That was the sole reason I went back to 3.2.6. My GPS is a little screwy though. After going through the full aGPS setup, I can get locks, but it can sometimes take 5 minutes to get a lock, which as you all know, can be frustrating. All it takes is 5 minutes to get lost lol.

Yes the 4.1.2 seems to be having GPS issues for me LOL, I will be downgrading to 3.2.6 myself when I have a some time...

kflipproductions - Is there a program to keep the phone from going to sleep? I have one GPS program (GPSed - very nice) that supposedly keeps the sleep function from taking place when it is logging data but if I run more than one program when it is running then the phone goes to sleep anyways.
Sorry about the delay on my reply - I have been Internet Connection Challenged over the last couple of days.
Thanks to everyone for all the wisdom
I downgraded to 3.2.6 as my GPS was not locking on to anything.
No love... lol

[Q] How to decrease time for GPS to lock?

Current config:
MIUI 1.9.16
ROM: ED05
Kernel: Glitch v12 HL (9/22/11)
Glitch 9/22/11 has been a HUGE improvement on my phone's speed, stability and smoothness. However, I'm still getting quite a lag time (3-5 min.) before the Fascinate connects to the satellites when using GPS for navigation.
I'm currently looking at Radio EC09.
Are there any recommendations or thoughts?
Do you leave your GPS on all the time? I've found my GPS takes a lot longer to lock if I was only turning it on When I need it. Now I leave it on all the time and most of the time it locks fairly quickly. Some people have better luck with E05, personally my GPS is better on EC09.
Yes. GPS is always left on. I am constantly using GPS to show specific locations as well as Latitude with family and friends.
My fascinate locks a bit quicker than my wife's with the exact same set up. And hers takes more time than mine to find Satellites. She has gone 10-15 min. without it ever finding a satellite lock.

Decided to Odin EC09 radio.
First GPS lock was nearly instantainiously; however, following uses were not as quick. I'll test it out today and report my findings.
I have tried just about every GPS fix/tweak out there. It seems like everything works well once or twice. Maybe the placebo effect. After a day or two it is always back to the random lock times of seconds to minutes. I have had the best overall luck with the PWGB rom. 9 out of ten times it locks in under a minute which seems to be the best my phone will do.

thats because things get out of wack like the compass or need to be updated like agps data. if youve tried the GPS fixes out there like downloading the gps.conf file from powerwash/geewiz and deleting gps files in miui (not sure about others) then always check out the compass/agps if you arent getting a quick lock.
I usually use GPS status to check it and it downloads AGPS data. I've heard the compass can be a problem but I have seen my phone GPS lock in a few seconds with the compass reading WAY off and I have also seen it take several minutes when the compass is perfect. Seems to be no pattern on my phone.
I have been on EH09 since it came out. Now on PWGB latest version it has consistenly locked quickly since flashing.

Some people have issues with gps lock and some don't.. I believe certain roms help because they add different tweaks .. or build props to "enhance" or tune. Other devices just have a better response time or better reception I guess everyone's phone is different as we see...

Being on Android for over a year, it's become very apparent that even with the same internals and install procedures, every phone is treated differently, and treats the user differently in turn. It's just something that's unforeseen and probably the main reason things are redone a lot by manufacturers or developers to account for every possible account that the software could change through normal use, by either power users, normal simple users, on all of the extremes.
Can't wait to see developers get at the new build and for source to finally drop.

My GPS...
...was fine on stock UCLA1 and is flaky as hell on stock UCLF6 after doing the Kies update. I used to get a solid lock indoors, now it randomly takes forever if I get a lock at all sometimes and is fine others. I'm trying to sort this (see what might be causing it). Gonna be lots of pissed people if their GPS gets borked by the update.
Edit: GPS Test app always shows 20+ satellites in view but satellites in use can inexplicably vary from 0 to apx. 14, even if left alone. Cold boot fixes it.
Has anyone tried using gps test and clearing / updating AGPS data in the settings? Also something that usually helps me.
