Have you guys checked out the NEW Windows Live Search?
* Map your friends: Grabs addresses from your contact list, puts them on the map, and provides directions.
* View Virtual Earth collections: Lets you check out maps of locations/events shared by members of the community.
* Web search: Launch web search directly from the client to find web pages, product price comparisons and reviews, news, images, etc.
* Weather: Check the current weather, or a 4 day forecast.
If you have it the older version installed all you have to do is run Windows Live Search and check for an update, but if you don't have it installed check out
http://wls.live.com and you can download it from there.
Thnx for the heads up
Thanks for the heads up!
This is the program I use for driving directions and they are good. The Telenav that's included form Sprint took me a mile down a backroad to the edge of a lake because I chose "shortest distance"!! WLS directions have never pulled that crap on me : )
Plus... since I got no2's mogul tools and hid the extended rom I can actually use a huge cache.
This is the best program now.
Yeah especially the gas prices feature...with gas being absolutely ridiculously expensive...handy little tool. Already have pushed Google Maps to the side for this new version.
Love this new version, also don't forget there's also a new mini weather app included.
Nice. I did some mapping with the last ver of Live using contacts and it was always way off.
[EDIT] Score, it's accurate. Tried some addresses and they all mapped correctly.
Sadly for routing and gas it remains limited to the USA & UK..
How is this version in regards to memory. The previous version seemed to hog a lot of resources for it run.
Thanks
What did you guys do to get the GPS to work? Are you using the GPS launcher?
I have tried the default settings in GPS as well as changing the COM port to the one indicated in GPS settings. (both settings in Win Live)
Google Maps works perfectly with no issue. Any suggestions? I would really like to try out this new version of Windows Live!
Thanks.

I'm using GPS Viewer to prime the GPS. It seems Live search screws up the GPS too, need to soft reset to get it working again. I need to update my radio/rom tho still.
GPS worked right after flashing dcd's new rom for me. I have Sprint Navigation installed too, not sure if that helps but I use it so it also.
Just fine for me

Works perfectly for me. It's All about having the 3.35(.04) radio.
GPS needs no enablers or extra programs Google maps AND Live Search work perfectly. So well, in fact, that even (in the rare cases) I loose signal and the data connection Live search will keep track of me on a blank or fuzzy map : )

Your right. The thread that covers the application explains the fix. Its becuase those apps are access the comport still instead of the Windows Mobile daemon(?) for GPS. You need to install a third party app that will grab the de-obfuscated data and redirect it to a soft comport that these apps will use. The program that was recommend was called Franson GPS gate. It will take the data and reroutes it to another "Com port"
All of the details are in the Adapter thread. Check it out around page 18 or so...
I got it working great for me but its just too much crap to get GPS when you can flash to a custom ROM and not have to worry about two third party apps.
Eitherway, good luck.
Custom roms are great, i've used them almost since I bought the 6800.If I want verizon to upgrade me to a better phone, I need to log complaints against the stock rom. using these little tricks keeps the phone serviceable at any given time while affording me a semi "custom" rom feel that I have grown accustomed to.
any sugestions
i cant get the gps to wirk in tomtom still even using gps gate so could anyone recomend a good rom i would love to keep all the functions of the stock wm6.1 but have gps features as well.

What happens?
Even using gps gate the gps doesnt lock on my position. i get 5 to 8 satalites but then cant pinpoint where i am. There is a huge standared diviation when i look up my location upward of 100000 feet. google maps uses the same gps and port but knows exactly where i am.
I found the navigon mobile software to work quite well. Acquire it as you see fit. Mostly works with European maps but US are available. Im using Mobile Navigator 6.XX. cant remember. Got screwed by verizon and bought iPhone. but i will still offer advice. After contract is up if verizon can shape up i can get an android capable phone if they offer it.
Hi Fellow XDA'ers!
I have a touch dual (with WM6.5).
I like the look of the Hero but have a few reservations.
Firstly, I read posts that it struggles to sync with Outlook!!?? - can this be sorted? - ActivSync (by BTooth) is very handy and does the job well.
Secondly, I like having the apps such as IGO8 or TOMTOM to hand on my phone, should I need it.
Can I install these apps (or similar) on the Hero?....In other words - can WM apps work on Android?
thanks

I think syncing with Outlook over Bluetooth is out of the question. It can sync Contacts and Calendar (only those two) over the USB cable with the use of the 'HTC Sync' software. That software is not available _yet_ on the HTC site, but apparently it IS included on the memorycard included with the Orange bundle that is now shipping.

Those two applications are not (yet?) available for Android. There are a few other navigation solutions available, but I'm under the impression they are not the level of iGO or TomTom. Also, I have no idea on which countries they support or what price they are available at.

No. There are a whole bunch of Android apps, but software made for Windows Mobile will simply not work (and never will) on Android. They will have to make a special Android version for it, and for utilities and tweaks that is simply not easily done.

ALKs CoPilot Live 8 is available on the market and is quite competitively priced at £22.60 for a one region version (e.g. UK maps).
I've not played with it extensively, as I bought it as a backup for my regular Garmin satnav unit, but it is definitely much slicker than some of the other alternatives for Android that I've tried (e.g. AndNav).

Seems to be a good TomTom alternative! Thanks for the Tip! And they even have 'whole of western europe' or only 'benelux'. That makes it much more affordable if you never leave The Netherlands for example .
Since I'm an Android newbie myself (well, not even an Android newbie, still waiting for my Hero): On the CoPilot site, on 'where to buy' to say to go to the Android market. But they also have three picture, some sort of square barcode. I've seen those more around Android oriented pages. How do they work?
It's a QR code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code) which is essentially a 2-dimensional barcode that can hold a variety of data. In this case, it is holding a URL.
If you download a barcode reader from the market (e.g. Barcode Scanner by ZXing team, which is the one I use) you can use the phones camera to "read" the barcode and it will then allow you to jump to the URL in the browser.

Dave
Winmo apps on Android
You never know what could happen guys!
I currently dual boot windows 7 ultimate and Linux Ubuntu.
And as all linux users are aware, there is a nice little app called wine, Wine allows us to run and use many windows apps in a Linux enviroment...
Cant be that much different with Android (linux) and windows mobile.. can it?
Would be a fantastic step and i think possibly the final push for many winmo users!
Im still struggling to choose my self....From HD to Hero?? mmmm
There are few things you need to know about the young android:
1. You cannot save apps to memory card unless rooted.
2. You cannot receive files via bluetooth unless rooted.
overall, Android is a lot better than Winmob
Sorry if this is a stupid question :-(
I run a number of Java applets under WINMO via an applet manager (ESmertec for example). Will these run on Android?
CoPilot is working brilliantly on my Magic and I'll be putting it on my Hero when I get it at weekend.
Here's a great thing - any apps that I've purchased from the Android Market are tied to my google checkout account - When I sign in on my Hero and go to market, those apps will show as purchased and downloadable for me. Also my calendar and contacts will automatically sync to my Hero.
As far as WM apps are concerned, I've used both WM6 and android devices - Not missing anything on my Magic that I had on WM now that Turn By Turn Nav is there. Some apps are already ported over - Docs To go, and recently Touchpal Keyboards.
The ability to search for, find, pay for (if needed) and download software on the fly is just priceless. The fact that most apps are free or very cheap is even better. I'd not go back to WinMo now for anything...
However, you're just gonna have to get one in your hand and see for yourself - its all personal preference amongst the top handsets really.
well my upgrade is being delivered in the morning! yey! HTC Hero on orange..
Wonder if tomtom will port any time soon? should be an easy job considering the tom tom units are linux driven!

I've been a TomTom user (on my HTC Trinity and HTC Touch Pro) for almost 3 years now. My HTC Hero will be arriving on Monday morning and I'm actually pretty excited about the change I'll be making to CoPilot.
Not that there's anything wrong with TomTom, but the newer version of CoPilot looks very cool, and it might be nice to try something different.

I have heard a lot of people complaining about the version of CoPilot crashing on the Hero, not sure why this is. TomTom are releasing an iPhone version so who knows, might make its way over to Android in about 3 years?
For me, Copilot certainly crashed. It was not a patch on the stability of Garmin XT. The application felt unfinished with a lot of times when not a full crash, lack of keyboard reponse. Tbh, this failure was the straw that broke the Hero's back
I've not had a single problem with copilot on my magic. Fully tested with postcodes etc and long journeys. Its VERY cheap compared to most satnavs, can be used without any data assistance at all, and very quick to reroute etc.
I have heard about some probs but they have mostly seemed to be related to people trying to hack it or get the maps running without paying, and I know that copilot has added a few layers of security since I bought mine for magic - initially it just installed and needed your google checkout number.
Then it needed that, and you then got a license code and device ID thingy.
I had an update early on from version .303 to .327 which made mine stop loading - One email to support, told me to uninstall ALL, including the maps folder, and it was back working perfectly... I personally think the voices of folks having probs trying to get it running without paying are clouding the issue a bit - I've only heard from one (cbailey) who I know paid, but still got crashes.
Daisy - Was happy with my G1 (since Jan) Happy with my Magic(since beginning of June), and gonna be happy with my Hero I think...

You're in the UK right? I have been looking into copilot as a replacement for my old TomTom once I get my Hero. And although copilot said on their website they have european versions, if I browse the store (though Cyrket for example) I only see their USA map pack / application. Is this location / localization dependant somehow? Why can't I see the european maps in the market?

I think we got a big android fan here
In the Market, you get the option for a One Region map - Uk and Ireland comes under that - for £25.99 (Market shows 22 something but then checkout adds VAT for UK)
I think these options are only seen/available on market for android phones. I think they are not offered as products for other platforms, and you only get details once you have bought CoPilot 8 for android.
I personally downloaded CoPilot Central and got my maps via PC through that. You get a Membership name and password when you checkout at google Checkout - I was sent an email with details of that. The actual copilot programe for android downloads to your fone OTA like other apps, but the map fetcher is on PC. I think you CAN get the maps OTA to your fone, but I thougyht that seemed silly and would take ages and be heavy on your data allowance etc.
CoPilot central is free I think - You can get it here

You can get them OTA direct onto the phone via cellular data, but the program advises you do it over WiFi.

No problems at all with CoPilot APART from TouchFlo seems to lock up when I exit. Not sure if anyone else has this problem.
Other than that, it has no lag what-so-ever, which I used to always have with TomTom. Big thumbs up for me, even more so when I sort out the locking issue when exit, but thats no biggie.
I recently installed the EzHero 5.1 ROM. I'm having problems with GPS. Google Maps can't work out where I am, nor can Google Places or the built-in weather widget, and I even installed an app called GPSTest to be sure, and that too seems not to have any reading. So I'm pretty sure GPS is not working. I can see the little satellite icon flashing in the top bar from time to time, but my phone doesn't seem able to determine my location.
I've enabled GPS (and not network-based location) in Location, I've enabled location sharing in Privacy, and I've enabled handset location sharing in Settings on www DOT google DOT com.
Could this be a problem with the EzHero ROM? Should I try installing e.g. VillainROM 12? I tried searching the forum but can't even locate the thread where I downloaded the ROM from just last week any more (following the link from Google suggests the thread has been removed!?), let alone any more detailed information
Thanks for any pointers!
Well, I have now got GPS working. What a cool technology! I've changed two things:
1. Updated to the latest radio
2. Changed location -- am now in my house on the second floor, rather than on the eighth floor of my office building (both in central London).
I don't really understand why either of these would have any effect, and in terms of location, I'm pretty sure I tried using it outdoors and in other locations before. So could it have been the radio??
The weather widget still says it has no weather available. Oddly, though, the one thing that has known my location all along is the Weather Channel widget, and that works just fine....!
I've been trying to find a nav app that will let me import pre-planned trips.
In my research I found only two; 1) copilot, 2) HTC Locations with Trips tab.
Well I can't stand #1, and it seems that #2 was only available in Asia, unless I'm missing something? it seems like a feature that should be standard as it has since the first days of dedicated gps devices but it still hasn't arrived on Android, not even in the Google suite of apps despite the constant posts in the Google forums requesting this function.
being able to create a specific route or record a route for the purpose of sharing and reuse I don't think is a lot to ask.
until this happens their will always be a market for a dedicated GPS.

It supports a number of different maps that can be side loaded on your sdcard so no data connection is needed.
Edit ... I forgot to add it's Free
that's a nice non-data tracker, like Google's My Tracks without the 3g map, thx..... but I still can't record for vehicle nav with text to speech which is what I'd really like.

that looks like a perfect companion to my Colorado GPS! I tracked our whole summer holiday with it, but it's be great to be able to see that track on a mobile device (that's a bit larger than that 2-something inch screen that my Colorado has )
I have currently the Epic 4g Touch from Sprint and i'm using google navigation and was wondering if there were other options that are better, that post speed limits and such? I heard telenav and navigon were pretty good? Any suggestions?
Telenav is good, but not as good as Google Navugation. Neither to my knowledge post speed limits, or even give you your current speed. That would be a nice feature. I use Google Nav myself.
I've tried a number of different apps but I always come back to Google Maps + Navigation. It works just about everywhere and supports offline. I just haven't found anything that is "better enough" to switch.
Did you try NAVIGON? A friend of mine used it and he loved it..
For me GoogleMaps as a free service is still the best
Google Maps is definitely the best. If your GPS is acting wonky, I like GPS AIDS. Seemed to fix me right up on my Streak.
Navigation by Google for me .
Hi I am using Sygic Aura..it works gr8 on my SGII...you dont need an active data connection...I would really recommend this....
I aam using Sygic Mobile Maps 10 on my wildfire and it is very good!It also says the speed of the vehicle and also estimates the time remaining to arrive!
I have tried the Mapquest app for Android, but nothing beats Google Navigation Beta.
Anyone try out waze? I have it but it currently force closes on ICS, so hopefully they a fix out for ICS...lifehacker really liked it.
How about a GPS that can plan a detour for you? Often I'd like to find a good place to eat on the way to a client. I saw a couple in the market, but they were both totally broken. Yelp integration would be sweet too.
I found Trapster has pretty accurate speed limits on it's GPS system. Most everything works well and then there's the added benefit of seeing where the PoPo hide in unfamiliar territory.
Places (the big Red exclamation point) that comes on a lot of Android phones now, seems to do a good job finding restaurants in new places. Just tell it what your craving!
Hope that helps.
I vote for navigation from google maps. It's the best
Sygic Navigation is very good and has got all good features mentioned by others here. You can customize it as per your own settings and very accurate in terms of map.
Google Navigation has given me issues, but NAVIGON usually works very well for me.
Navigation by Google
I've started using waze. Haven't tried it for much, but it does seem to have been patched to work with ICS (I'm using ICS Passion on a Samsung Vibrant.)
I agree.....Navigation by Google has worked very well for me. I travel the country quite a bit.
Navigation by google the best no doubt, i recommend to use it
sygic is good
