Hi,
I took my O2 atom exec to get the plastic housing replaced.
I took it to a phone repair shop to do, and they did it, but then they said the microphone was faulty and wanted an extra $95 to fix this.
The phone was working perfectly beforehand, and now I am left with a phone where the mic doesnt work properly. I can hear calls ok, but just cant speak back. I found if I use the handsfree/loudspeaker function the mic works.
Does anyone know what the problem could be, and would it be an easy fix?
I shouldn't of brought it to those guys... What can you do though.
Any help would be appreciated. The rest of the phone itself seems to be working fine.
It doesn't make sense.
I can talk fine when its on loudspeaker function but when its off then the caller can't hear me talk.
I can record using the mic.
I wonder if it's a software thing, and whether doing a hard reset might be worth a try? Thoughts guys?
Edit: Ok it doesn't look like software issue as I have just done a hard reset and still the same issue. SO it looks like some kind of hardware issue - Mic/Motherboard.
Noone has heard of this problem before...?

Hi there,
At my SGS2 it seems the microphone hole next to the microUSB cable, is not open. Everybody complains they can't hear me.
Sure, I can send the SGS2 back, but then I'm won't have a phone for the next couple of weeks.
Does anyone know, who already disassembled the SGS2, what this could be? Some soft plastic which I can easily remove with a needle?
My last option would be send it back, but maybe you guys know an option?
Can I use some audio codes for cranking up te mic?
Thanks!

Hmm .. seems I have the exact same problem here. People are complaining they can't hear me and they hear a terrible echo. Tried with headset, problem solved (of course ) Not sure if it is not open, I can see something gray inside the hole, which could be the mic. Disassembling is not an option for me, just got it yesterday so .. if there is really something wrong I will go back to the store asap.
I am disappointed about this, really, expected a lot from this phone to replace my Desire.
EDIT: tried also speakerphone, then it is all normal. Speakerphone uses the mic on top near the headphone jack, I just found out. It looks like a faulty mic to me (or covered with something).
EDIT 2: Fixed, although people say that with my previous phone the quality was better. Reset to factory defaults did the trick for me. It seems that the firmware update the other day (used Kies) had messed something up, that is my guess.
New device
Well, I kept holding the problem. Yesterday in the morning all was fine, in the noon people kept telling they hear me with bad quality and an echo. I went back to the store, explained the situation, they gave me a new device. I can clearly see the difference in the microphone hole .. the first phone it was closed, here it is more open. Problem should be solved now, I hope. I can say that I tested the quality myself and I can hear the difference. The sound of voice is more clear and louder.
I think it is word a shot for you to try to change your phone for a new one.
Hardware related bug, hoping to bypass it completely.
Started happening about 2 months ago.
problem: When headphones/bluetooth are not connected, my microphone on the phone will not work. When either are connected, both the headphone/bluetooth microphone are working at the same time. I've been using bluetooth to place calls this entire time, Person on the other end gets a constant echo, if I cover up the phone microphone the echo stops(and they only hear what comes from the bluetooth headset).
I've flashed multiple roms, it seems to me like this is hardware related, but for the life of me I can't figure out how this seems to have got reversed in functionality (microphone on the phone should mute when headset is attached, not unmute)
Anyways, I'm perfectly fine using bluetooth, I never use my microphone on my phone for voice searches (I'm a southerner, it just doesn't work... yall.) i also never record videos. So, anyone know how I can keep the phone microphone muted full time?
That sucks
The same thing happened to my fiance's eris. I tried everything i could think of... its a hardware issue. She also had a problem with her track ball at the same time, it would not scroll down, only up left and right. She ended up getting a new phone, because nothing else worked. Sorry for your luck. Let me know if you find a fix.

Thanks for the response. I'm 100% sure its a hardware problem. If I cant figure out a way to permanently mute the onboard microphone im going to buy a dead eris and just replace the little board with the usbport/microphone. If that doesnt fix it, I will see if it will boot up with that board removed completely. (have a battery only charger already.)
But before I do either, I would love it if one of the genius' around here (no disrespect, some smart folks on these forums) responded with a way to permanently mute it.
10 day bump in hopes that someone knows something that didnt see it. Wont do it again. *crosses fingers*
The phone was bought new in May and unlocked in June because it's in another country. It came with Android preinstalled from T-Mobile.
The Wi Fi doesn't work, but that's a hardware problem and HTC won't fix it under warranty because the phone was unlocked. NOt a big deal, and not the problem I'm writing about.
Last night the battery died. Today, after charging the battery, the speaker and microphone don't work.
Anyone I call cannot hear me. There is no sound at all on the other phone. No static, Nothing! It's like putting your turned off phone to your ear.
And it is the same when they talk. I can't hear anything.
I took the battery out several times and that didn't help
Did a hard reset and that didn't help either. The phone was working fine until the battery died
does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Same problem
I have the same problem. I'm looking for a solution, otherwise I'll need to send it back. Did you ever find a fix? #frustrating

My HTC Amaze is almost doing the exact opposite. When I make or receive calls, I cannot hear people. They can hear me, but unless I put it on speakerphone, I am SOL. It works with bluetooth in my car just fine but it is a little aggravating to have to keep a call on speaker. Anyone else have this problem? I have done a hard reset, I called TMobile...they said they were unable to help. I have the insurance, but only for lost or damaged. As it was explained to me...TMobile cannot help me in regard to phone but...if I drop it in the toilet or run over it...the php insurance will cover it (with the 150 deductible) When I signed up for the insurance it was explained to me that it was like an extended warranty. However when I called tech support, I was informed that it was not... Help please
Is anybody having problems with their mic not being sensitive? If I hold my phone an inch or more away from my face it doesn't pick up any sound at all. I've done several tests with other phones and my DNA is the only phone that is suffering from this? It's a problem because the other person on the line can't hear me at all unless I talk really really loud?
I'm having the same issue. If I hold the phone even the smallest bit away from my face, it sounds like I'm on the other side of the room to the person on the other end. VZW technical support claimed it was the software and made me do a factory reset, even though anybody with the smallest bit of tech knowledge could tell you it's a hardware problem.

Actually I believe its a software problem and although I never had the issue with my dna, my friend paul did. With his phone, I was thinking it maybe a hardware issue at first but I found out that if you put his phone on speaker and then take it back off speaker it was fine. Also not only that but if you use the system test on his by dialing *#*#3424#*#* and then do a mic test, it would work perfectly there as well so if it were an actual hardware issue, it would be screwing up all the time, not just in phone calls before switching between modes and back again.
Hi guys,
Whenever i use the speaker, whether its on the phone or using duo, i sound terrible to the other person. i sound very far away and i sound like im underwater are things im being told, they cant understand me but i can understand them perfectly. this doesnt happen when i dont use speaker. i tried calling T-mobile to replace my phone but, not kidding, they hung up on me 3 times, seriously, and when i went to the store they said i needed to go to ubrakifix, which i did and they didnt help me. has anyone else had this issue? were you able to fix it? any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!
Most likely its the phone case. I noticed some of the earlier phone cases that came out, it blocks the top microphone port. Which is what it uses when on speaker phone mode.
