was just thinking how things are going in the right direction for sammy
what ever happened to the hd8910 camera? how come it wasn't used in the new lineup ?
come and compare the old hd8910 camera (8mp) vs the latest cam(8mp) used in the gs2, the difference in quality is big... is there a reason sammy dumped the old ones for the new ones when the old ones outperform the new ?
just thinking how much better the gs2 would of been....
im guessing more will come from sammy in the next year or so
I haven't tested the hd8910, but I think that my SGS2 has a better camera than my old M8800 Pixon 8mp, which was also good.
For me, the only problem with the SGS2 camera is when taking pictures in the dark. Nevertheless, no digital camera does the job as I'd like them to do. Therefore, for me there is no issue.
i8910 was a joint venture between Nokia (it ran S60V5) and Samsung. Nokia has an exclusive agreement with Carl Zeiss to use their lenses in mobile phones. When Samsung left Nokia, they also dropped the high quality lens.
I really wish Elop had of jumped in bed with Android instead of Microsoft. Having a modern, dual core android phone like the SG2 with a Carl Zeiss lens would be my dream phone. I'm waiting to see what new players enter the field before I let my i8910 go. I've pretty much given up on finding another phone with such an incredible lens in it.
I considered the Nokia N900, but its not being sold in the US (or UK, or Germany.....) and the few countries it is being sold are equivalent to ~900 USD. Forget that.
Hey guys,
A few weeks ago my sgs3 broke (screen) and I claimed another one under insurance but I took out the camera module for the pure fact of how impressed I was with the optics on this phone. I've got an iPhone 4s and actually think that the s3 is better in quality.
I was thinking of getting an android development board (like odroid x or something) and experimenting with somehow connectng it up to the board with all the right drivers and learning a bit of coding. Even though I've got absolutely no idea how to do anything like this.
Does anyone know if this would be possible or should I just flog the camera on ebay?
I phone4s got a old module ,I doubt it fit in
seems such a shame when all this camera needs is a good tegra3 or A9 processor to capture great photos

Its also a shame that all the phone needs is a screen to be a phone again! If that's really the case I'd consider throwin a new screen on the phone (if that's all that broke). I know they're pricey but still seems worth it over the cost of a development board.
Depends if the OPm claimed a new screen or a new phone. Would insurance automatically replace the phone or go for repairs? If they replaced the phone I'd say put the cam back in, get the screen replaced and sell the phone.
Learning coding isn't simple and learning the hardware codes to make the phone work isn't necessarily going to lead into coding android apps.
can some developer to port a rom jelly beans to Newman n2? it have the same SoC Exynos 4412. Is sufficient for porting?
Newman N2 sounds like some cheap Chinese knock-off. Doubt anyone would want to port to that, even though it may be possible.

The same capabilities of the galaxy s3, rather something more but much cheaper. I bought it from http://android-sale.com/newman-n2.html.
See the specs.

Seems the only thing that differentiates this from the GS3 is that the Newman has a better camera. Porting would be possible, I think, but the problem would be getting the camera to run as the GS3 "only" has an 8MP one.

Freelander i20
Mine arriwed. Not N2 but Freelander I20. Same except the name. I love it. And I'm hope it will be possible to port. I'll post a little review tomorrow.
Newman N2
I have just ordered the Newman N2, and I hope to see a custom rom in the near future (preferably based on CM10 or CM10.1, or even AOSP or AOKP)... I have not developed or modified any ROM so far (although I'm using Disarmed Toaster on my HTC Evo 3D), but I know my way about programming on a PC and in Linux. So I might be of some help in the process...

Freelander I20
Ok. Maybe if some of you interested in a little review. I'm share my experiences. First, sorry for my english.
Hardware
I'm pleasantly suprised. The assemblage is very good. No crakckilngs. The buttons are good. The backshell is simple plastic, but it's a little rugged, so has better hold, not so floppy. The black is normal, but the yellow is all-gloss-plastic, I like it.
There is a little glitch in my case, over the resistive buttons a little light-leak visible on dark screens. It is still reasonable. I don't know is any way to swith this button light on-off, but I will looking around.
The camera making good photos, but the burst mode is a little slow. Maybe the memory access is not the best. I'm hope it will be fixed in the next FW. The speaker sounds good and clear.
It doesn't recognised my CL10 ADATA SD formatted NTFS, but working well formatted FAT32, I think it will be fixing also in the future, and maybe no problems with slower class NTFS formatted cards.
The display is superb. Good colors, and viewing angle. I had a super amoled Samsung before, so I think I say it without fear or favour.
The WIFI is fast as it can be. And the BT also working fine. I will test GPS later.
Software
The phone started on my mother language, thanks Pandawill. Isn't installed any needless chinase program, but comes with Play Store. Untill this time been able to install any programs I want. It isn't rooted. I'm hope the devoted community will do it fast.
Antutu v3 scores 12700, not the best, but I don't care still all the games going without lag. (Updated: dunno why, but after a restart it scored 14900) Eternity Warriors 2, Zenonia 5, Crazy Fist2 goes well. Asphalt 7 has a small lag, but don't know whats normal, it doesn't work on my tablet. Pinball Arcade goes fine but Zen pinball has lag just like on my dual core tab with same gpu. Trial xtreme 3 goes fine.
I will test more games later. Another apps. What I'm using installed. TFS Shell goes like a charm. Youtube, Facebook OK. All tool working in Smart Tools.
If you have any questions, let me know.
PS: I'm still very happy with this phone.

I have a Freelander I-20, just arrived today and have been messing around with it. I had tried to cancel the order but as often seems to happen with Chinese retailers, they ignored my emails and sent it anyway!
I'm quite impressed with the screen, very bright and good viewing angles. Reception with Three UK has been a bit spotty but I'm in a bad area and so needs more testing. GPS took a good few minutes to lock during a quick test.
Number one problem I've noticed is the lack of full G-apps. It has Play, so gmail etc... can be installed, but there is no initial android/google set-up and no way to sync contacts (even from settings and accounts). There's a French forum with quite a few people who have received this phone and they are all reporting the same. I noticed a link on that forum to XDA and a tool for rooting phones that use the Exynos4 processor, and I can confirm that it works with the I-20.
Using that I was then able to install Titanium Backup and restore google contacts sync and gtalk from a backup saved from my previous phone (Huawei G300). So now I have my contacts back and also gtalk so the biggest problem for me was resolved quite quickly.
Sorry for the noob question but which is the best forum for creating a dedicated post for this phone?
working fine! and the camera also working, so we love Chainfire! rooted in 1 min, lool
I don't know what is the best place to create a dedicated post, maybe this forum?
btw as I see, Newman has better support and big community (check this, already got 8 patch? http://tieba.baidu.com/f?kw=%C5%A6%C2%FCn2), maybe later we can use Newman FW on our device
Latest Newman N2 update, dated 2013.01.12
http://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shareid=190860&uk=1143976775
Thanks Kacerolo, from HTCMania, already flashed Newman FW on Freelander I20, working fine. I'm waiting how-to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6ocJeUe0dc
Don't you know guys, is it OK if I'm start the phone in recovery mode and flash simple the FW from the extSD?
And some nice infos about the phones, thanks Lares
01.11 Newman started sales of N2, and all phones have been sold for three and a half minutes. The next batch is planned for January 18.
All phones are tested by robots from the future and stationery clamps.
Package Contents is different in that N2 has the micro-sim adapter and cutter, and I20 has second yellow back cover
The phone has the Sony Exmor RS camera with a back-illuminated sensor.
The phone has a touch screen and display are produced by OGS (one glass solution) technology.
The phone has the Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protective glass and ten finger multitouch.
The phone has a dual cooling, namely graphite and aluminum-magnesium plates somewhere inside.
The phone has a second microphone for noise reduction during the conversation, and used NICAM audio compression technology.
Proof for five previous facts about this phone is here .
The screen in the phone is produced by LG Display. It is 7.5-generation LCD IPS, that is exactly the same as in LG flagships.
Despite some unresolved issues with the camera, Newman is very proud of it, and its further optimization in priority.
In a short time Newman promises release version firmware. Unofficial firmwares and firmware porting welcomed by Newman.
Something else:
The phone has not OTG.
The phone has not MHL.
3.5 mm jack corresponds to the CTIA international standard. Old headsets with OMTP standart will not work properly.

Quality / price to record!
Newman N2 vs. FreeLander i20
Interesting results , as the Newman N2 and FreeLander i20 are said to be internally the same. Then what's the reason for ~10% difference in the results? A bit worse software in the i20? Or some kind of cheating?
When I get my N2, I'll run the AnTuTu benchmark too... can someone with i20 post his/her results too?
Jiri
Don't know why. First time I'm tested antutu, got 12xxx points, but after a restart, got 14900. Btw the 00.22 Newman FW on my Freelander! Just need to fix PlayStore. Still searching.

Owners were some problems with the 3D benchmarks, but only with benchmarks. According to them, the actual performance does not suffer. In the latest firmware Newman repaired the compatibility with some applications. I think this just affects the results. Freelander is so slow with updates, but Newman makes new f/w twice a week.
Hello all,
I'm new to XDA and impressed by the amount of information available for all different phones!
I would love to get your suggestions on this -
I recently purchased the Moto Z unlocked at around $288 (in a deal). Just because it was such a low price, I pulled the trigger on this deal, but now thinking if I did the right thing. Though the phone performs very good, camera is a huge disappointment, always giving "hold camera steady" message.
Since I am still within return period for this phone, it would be great to hear from you experts if this phone is good value for money I paid for it, or should I wait to get OnePlus 5 or the Huawei Mate 9 pro or something very current gen (HTC U which will launch next month?)
I'm ready to put few extra $ if the upgrade seems worth it, but I'm confused right now if such upgrade would really give extra value. Your thoughts please?
Thanks!
Hi all,
Waiting for your expert suggestions please...
With that price it's the best phone you got.
And there's nothing exciting about the new phones launching this year. Just the jump from snapdragon 820 to 835, 4gb ram to 6gb.. and other unwanted stuff. Even theres nothing new about the upcoming Moto Z2. I think you got the best phone with that price.
(And next time whenever you think of buying a Moto, don't ever think that you'll get an amazing camera)
The camera is good enough. Maybe not as S7, but very very close, and in some situations even better. And the front flash is awesome
My wife bought a LG G5 and I got the Moto Z. I can safely say the camera is better than a G5. Haven't used a Samsung. But I'd say it's an average or above phone camera.
For low light, and zoom, I will soon get the camera mod, and use it for those situations.
Just my personal opinion, but I don't let cameras worry me. If I want great pics, I use my camera. No phone can compete with even the cheapest of real cameras. I get a phone based on my phone needs, since a small digital camera can be used when I go anywhere knowing I'm going to take a lot of pics.
But to each their own. :good:

Hi? I just got this too off craigslist with no charger . When I got a charger for it and it came up, and ended up having pin code enabled. How do I get this off? I'm new to moto. I'm used to flashing on samsung with Odin and stuffs. So not exactly a noob. It might have a Google lock, I don't mind. Can always find a way around that
Thanks all for the responses!
How bad is the Samsung bloatware? I have a week more remaining in my return period but this $288 price tag for this phone looks very good at which I bought this. The S7 edge is also selling today at the same price, though a refurbished one. Still not sure which one to go for.
I've had my V30 for 3 years now. Came to it from a Turbo that served me well for years too. The 30 has and still works awesome thanks to all the help from xda gurus.
I enjoy the freedoms of having an unlocked and rooted phone. I was wondering what a good upgrade would be? What are you all moving on to from the V30?
Thanks for any advice.
I have rooted Galaxy Note 9, myself.
I moved on to the Galaxy S10+ but I also gave up rooting. While I fully support the desire to root so you can truly own your device, I find it's getting harder and harder to get there. That said, I have not missed rooting either... I don't feel I'm missing anything by not being able to root this phone.
I chose the S10 because, originally, it was rootable (requires older bootloader)... and it kept most of the great features of the V30 (big battery, headphone jack, high-res screen, similar size, etc).
Thanks for the replies! I absolutely love having a head phone jack haha. All my cars are older and have an auxiliary input jack instead of Bluetooth lol
I'm in this situation too. While my V30 still meets my needs, it's already about five years old. I'm also the last one on our Verizon account - everyone else has been moved to T-Mobile.
I've been looking at the Sony Xperia 1 IV or maybe the previous version the Xperia 1 III. From what I understand they have a headphone jack, stereo speakers, SD card slot, and they're rootable. Their native screen resolution is 1644x3840, although according to GSMArena in normally runs at 1096x2560.
My lack of experience with Sony cell phones is a big part of whats holding me back. Another thing is since T-Mobile doesn't currently carry Sony phones, I lose out on any carrier incentives for the new line.
EDIT - I forgot to mention it also appears to not have a notch or hole-punch for the front camera.

Remember, you can also get a BT adapter for the car. I had this on my older previous car as well. I had one like this, but not this exact brand/model: https://smile.amazon.com/BK01-Bluetooth-Hands-Free-Wireless-Streaming/dp/B01MSUWCZ0
@hitokage004 I had looked at the Sony phones too, but they weren't available in the USA, cost a lot more, and I wasn't sure they work work on USA frequencies. They seem like great devices, but the limited matches on frequencies made it pointless IMO for the USA market. For example, here is the "Sony Xperia 1 IV" on TMo: https://www.frequencycheck.com/carr...04-so-51c-sony-pdx-223/t-mobile-united-states - you can see that LTE is only supported on 2/5 bands.
So, just be careful with that. And don't take my word on it, or that one website either...
@schwinn8 - There is a US model. You have to make sure that's what the seller really has, and unfortunately there are many that don't. That's one of the issues I've seen mentioned over on the XDA forums for the Xperia, so it's one of the things I know to watch out for if I do start actively pursuing one.
I believe there is supposed to be a variant that has 256GB of storage and is a bit cheaper. The international version is available that way, but I haven't confirmed if the US version does - only the 512GB is shown on the Sony US website.
The Xperia 1 III is available on Sony's site, with 256GB storage, at about $900. Then there are the Xperia 5 III and IV, that have a lower screen resolution, etc. The one I'm definitely not considering is Xperia PRO line - between the price and lack of wireless charging.

Yeah, I had looked at the III at one point, but for $900 it's silly money, IMO. I got my S10+ for $300 and that was about a year ago.
Good to know there may be a US model. I wonder if it's something like the LG/Samsung phones where you can just flash over to the right setup that you need, and get the frequencies you want. Again, this would be fine, but not at $900...
There's still the challenge of getting a US carrier to activate it. Most of the time they look at the IMEI and say yes/no, even if it is converted via the ROM. I ran into this with the V30 repeatedly (I was on a VZ MVNO, but the IMEI was something else).
I got a Samsung S20 FE 5G (after some time with Xiaomi/Redmi phones which I definitely don't recommend).
The plus point is that it still has MicroSD card slot. Missing the convenience of the headphone jack but I got a cheap usb dac which has good sound quality.
Unlocking it outside of EU is tough/paid so I am using it with BL locked stock rom (debloated): https://github.com/aakashverma7/Samsung-Debloat/blob/main/[DEBLOAT}Samsung S-Series.txt
It seems that time has finally caught up with my V30+, seeing numerous daily connection drops ( just for a second) at home. Also , file transfers using usb flakes out in mid stream. This is/was a damn good phone. Hopefully can retire into DAP duty. Have a "premium renewed" Galaxy S20 arriving tomorrow (battery replaced by Samsung)

Yeah, I have rooted Galaxy Note 9, my wife and elderly mother now have 64GB LG V35 (most direct upgrade from 64GB V30), my brother in law now has Galaxy S10+ and my sister is now getting Galaxy 20+ (or something like that).
We all had LG V30/V30+.
All replacement phones still have headset jacks, except for my sister's.
After using this S20 for a week now, I'm kind of liking it overall. Still need to debloat stuff, but it is manageable, I have wifi6 & 5G & sdcard , use a dongle for headphones. Guess my ol V30+ was telling me it was time...
My V30+ is about ready to call ir quits
Constantly overheats
Fingerprint scanner doesn't work
Main camera seems to be stuck in a shallow focus range and I have to wack it to get it working.
Was also looking at the sony line but they are expensive
A next option was the Poco X3 Pro... Only negative is the lcd screen in my opinion.
@tech_infinity why dont u recommend xiaomi/redmi? Isn't poco related to them?

All of that could be due to a bloated battery. When my original one bloated, the phone was warmer and the power button (which is where the fingerprint scanner is) wouldn't work unless I really pressed hard. I would take off your case and see if the back of the phone is bulging. If so, you can replace the battery with a new one from Amazon for less than $15. Even if you still think that you're ready to move on to another phone, you might still care to make the small investment to have a usable spare phone and media player.

I replaced the battery last year when i bought next v30 for parts.
If i restart the phone the scanner works sometimes.

Perhaps, when the battery was replaced, a few things weren't put back together as well as possible (the power/scanner button has a finicky connection that can come loose, I found out) or dust was introduced (perhaps why the camera focus is sometimes off). I dunno, but you might want take it apart again and make sure that all contacts, sensors and lenses are clean. If that doesn't do it, you might try wiping and clean flashing the phone. I'm just throwing ideas out if you'd prefer to try to fix it. I understand not wanting to bother and just upgrading, too.

It removes a lot of stuff so be careful with what you remove as it may end up removing features you like. I use it with my S20 fe 5g
I've moved to the Xiaomi 12 Global version. It is very good, but I really miss the LG, the back button and maxed out screen-to-phone size. I wish they were still making phones.
