Re-updating (cooking) ROM/Phone - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

Previously, I just used DCD's pre-cooked ROM and Phone; however, I am considering getting the kitchen and cooking my own ROM. So my questions are:
I believe I can re-flash the phone software if necessary without losing everything on the phone. Correct?
What about the ROM itself? If I reflash it will basically hard reset my phone, correct? i.e. I will lose all my data/software. So how does everyone keep from having to reload everything every time they reflash? Would using Resco Backup allow me to restore stuff and not mess up the newly flashed ROM? If so, what is the procedure?
Thanks!

1. Yes it will keep your Radio ROM intacked so no lose there.
2. Yes it will be like a hard reset. Most use the UC option or a MortScript to reload applications and registry settings. Some good info here.

X-Backup data not restorable after upgrade to ROM 1.60

I have (had...) a German lang. T-Mobile MDA II. Upgraded to 1.60, thinking that solves the german language problem smoothly. IT DID!
BUT:
When I want to restore the data from my SD card, the process goes through, and after the reset it says Contacts not available, and everzthing is gone: Start menu has only three lines, no programs available, etc.
I still have my contacts on my desktop (which is a Mac...), but lost all my 135 SMS messages, and all the settings for GPRS, MMS, etc.
Probably the German language settings are not compatible with the new English OS...
Anyone had the same? Any workaround?
Anyboby there?
it is very seldom that a restore will work that was made from a different rom. it is best to reinstall all your applications manually. keep in mind that when you do a rom upgrade there can be many changes made to your device such as in the registry that are now quite different, so if you were to apply a restore you would be putting your registry back the way it was.....

Yes mate. Back up your .apks and whatnot, but don't try refreshing a GB backup onto an ICS device. This is the number one cause of compatibility issues and random 'bugs' that users run into.
A fresh wipe will always give you the very best performance, and the very least issues
best of luck with it, check back in if you run into issues.

New O2 UK rom Downfalls

Hey guys, I have just upgraded my rom and found a couple of downfalls with the new version.
1) the extended rom tools to unhide and unlock no longer work - extended Rom now seems inaccessable
2) the internal memory area called 'Storeage' has disappeared also, leaving me with 16k less memory than I had before the upgrade!!
Any ideas how we can get these back??
I don't think it is to do with the ROM upgrade specifically.
Have you installed any other software?
I had this a couple of times a while back whilst I was experimenting with different ROMs and BT stacks, doing backups and restoring, etc.
Have you tried a hard reset?
Also, look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=10473 where other people had same problem.
Thanks for the info; your'e right:
I checked the other thread you mentioned, and have given it a go...
If you perform a hard reset my device with the new rom has the storeage available and the extended rom unlock tools work again. Restoring a backup and they both disappear.
Looks like I am going to have to rebuild my system :-(
I suspect that restoring an old backup replaces lots of windows related files and registry settings. I tried to install the fonix voicedial from the ext rom post-restoring and it claimed i had the wrong ROM version!
So yes, a rebuild is necessary
Certainly seems that way. Oh well, good luck!
Running new upgrade over unofficial upgrade
Just being lazy here - can you just do a hard reset and run the new 02 update over the 1.72.126 ver. as it says wrong version when you attempt to run it from after a normal reset (incorrect language error)?
Cheers,
Ste G.
As a general rule it is never a good idea restoring a backup over a different ROM version - bit like restoring a W2K backup over an XP install. That said, the latest version of Sprite is supposed to be ROM upgrade safe.
I always use the opportunity to clean out all the crap by doing a full reload - bit like the twice yearly Windows rebuilds on my PC.

Best backup/restore practices when migrating to new ROM?

Hi everyone. With all of these awesome new ROMs coming out I am constantly tempted(and often pull the trigger) to keep trying them out. I have been using Sprite Backup 6.1 which has a feature that saves device data for doing just this and is supposed to be able to do a device restore even with a new rom. I'm skeptical of this considering that many of these roms are built with OS's that are not yet released. Therefore, how can Sprite test the restore fully? The restore options are rom, device, safe, restore databases etc. Do you experienced rom testers/devs have any advice on the best way to painlessly migrate the Mogul to a new rom without installing all of your programs and doing all registry tweaks again etc? I want to try the new DCD 2.2 but I just spent the last 2 days reinstalling everything from my original gps rom to the 2.1 rom. Thanks again for all the help.
I believe the only way is to re-install everything. I think using Sprite merges all the files leaving more junk in your system. I keep upgrading just like you and manually install every file on every update. Its the cost of having your phone run up to date.
ouch, that is going to give me pause before going to dcd2.2. I guess I will wait a bit to rest up a bit since I stayed up until 3am this morning getting things tweaked with the new rom.

Wow -- really 2 days?
I have mine down to a science now. From the moment I start the upgrade to when I am finished is now 45min or less (my best has been 38).
I have created a doc that list step-by-step what I need to do next; therefore, eliminating the guess work and me trying to remember what's next.
Good Times!!!
I have a bunch of cabs on my storage card that I run. Then I put in my outlook server info and the phone is basically back to normal.
I have heard of the 2577 method on the SD card. I personally have not tried it. Apparrently you create a folder named 2577 on the storage card with the cab files and a autorun.exe file. (EDIT: The AutoRun shoudl be in the Stock ExtRom). This should be in the Stock ExtRom. I have read they use this when doing a lot of PPC for companies.

Will updating my kitchen to DCD 3.2.3 wipe my phonebook and applications

Will updating my kitchen to DCD 3.2.3 wipe my phonebook and applications? In another words " will i have to start over?"
yeah, doing a ROM update hard resets the phone.

Thats what i figured.....Its never easy
personally I prefer it this way. If you ever get to a no boot situation or a virus or whatever, a ROM update or hard reset is all it takes to clean up.
i find the rom updating very addictive. I use sashimi to backup my settings and install my programs, so it's pretty painless. Of course setting up sashimi or uc is very labor intensive, so it's only helpful for people who hard reset regularly.

full backup or dump of internal storage memory (installed programs, settings, registry)

I would like to try some cooked ROMs.
But I fully personalized all the settings in my actual shipped ROM.
I lost so much time to personalize it.
Is there a way to do a full backup or a "dump" of the internal memory as it is now?
Or there is a good backup program that FULLY backup all settings? (not only documents, contacts, messages, etc... but also registry, program settings, etc...).
So if I want to go back to my actual ROM, I reflash it then I restore the "dump" to get back all my old settings?
Thanks to all for your help!
Read here for instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424805&highlight=Dump
And please search in the future.

I'm sorry Dave, I read the topics about,
but I wasn't sure if the dump of the ROM creates only an image of the ROM's zone where there are the first WM installation/boot files (just like after an hard reset), or if it saves exactly the actual state of internal memory of the device.

It save's the current state IIRC.

No, it doesn't save the current state, only the installation files of the ROM.
I created the dump and I created ruu_signed.nbh.
I flashed ROMeOS, then I flashed back my created ROM.
All settings and programs are gone.
I think I didn't well explained what I would like to know.
I mean if it is possible to create a flash nbh file with the ROM backup (and this can be done, there are many thread about, I tried too and I succedeed), but also a full backup of ALL INSTALLED PROGRAMS IN THE INTERNAL STORAGE (programs I installed, no default ROM programs), all settings (TouchFLO3D settings and customization, phone settings,etc...), registry and system data.
As SBP Backup does.
And also avoid hard-reset restart after flashing that nbh file.
So the phone starts directly the first time normally.
What there is in the Part03.raw which is 330Mb?
The dimension is near the available internal storage.
I dont think it quite works like that.
I think your best bet is to build your own rom with your own settings and apps, AFAIK this is the only way to have the phone exactly as your want it after first boot.
Also have a look at SASHIMI, you may be able to get the results you want using that, although something seems to have happened to the thread pro tem.
Thank you dabs!
I will learn to build my own ROMs.
I used other's cooked ROMs for a long time.
I would like to be able to cook mine.
I downloaded and tried Sashami 7.5. It's a great and powerful program!
Also documentation is simple and complete.
Just in case you you havnt seen it:-
What you want the Raphael Kitchen, its an awesome package that lets mere mortals build their own perfect rom.
