am i the only one tired of trying to keep up with the 50+ pages of the issues thread and the chatter thread??
i was thinking of setting up a bugzilla like website for the xda live ROM.... but that would defeat the purpose of everything being in one place.... moderators/administrators is there anyway of setting up a hermesbugzilla.xda-developers.com site on your servers???
or anyone have a better idea?
Tell me about it, its a bit frustrating reading the same issues over and over again - especially when they've already been answered a million times.
How can I change the keyboard to suit my 8525 again? .
I don't think it warrants a bugzilla site, perhaps another Wiki page?
or new users have to be forced to read the wiki page before they can browse the forums....
There should be a new forum that only "Senior Members" can access That way we can just ignore the n00bs
I've got no problem with noobs, its great that they're keen on learning about their device - but that word is very important, learning. People need to learn to do some research themselves before asking questions, most of them have already been answered!

Before I attempted to do a single thing to my hermes, I spent a few *weeks* reading, learning, understanding and playing so that when the time finally came to do the deed, it went flawlessly.
It is a process. You need to UNDERSTAND what you're doing, know the reason WHY you're doing it, and LEARN about the process!
If you don't want to invest the time to understand, then just don't bother--it'll save you a bricked device.

ive been playing with PDA's for 3 years... ive read more documents and more how to's... bricked and unbricked my devices i cannot begin to count... but we need a process for the new users to follow... before they can even browse the forum they need to read the wiki or something....
Could we have a private area only for people who can pass a test based on the Wiki?
Q1) You just bought a new TyTn. You want to put WM6 on it. What is the FIRST thing you should do?
a) Download Des' SSPL RUU
b) Carefully read the Wiki and all related threads
c) Use Pof's version 3 unlocker to SuperCID your device
d) Download XDA-Live and run the upgrade program
I'm guessing that a lot of n00bs can't figure out the right answer to the above... It's multiple choice. What's YOUR answer?

Yeah, but, I've had PDA's for as long as PDA's existed.. My first one was a Palm Pilot 5000 (3Com's version of it). I got it about 2 weeks after it was released.
I've owned PPC's for about 3+years, and am an MCSE (so, I understand the technology inside the version of Windows it uses pretty well).
I read for a while before joining; but, quite frankly, I didn't have a reason to join here before I did--the 8525 didn't exist until about a week before I bought it!

If we didn't brick devices, the senior's wouldn't be developing unbricking techniques which allow us to do much more.
If we sensor, test or discriminate then we lose the purpose of this forum (maybe even become like Microsh*t). How would Pof, Olipro, Kyphur etc have become members if they hadn't been able to ask the questions which helped teach them their skills.
The main reason there are so many repeat or dumb questions out now is because there have been so many new tools and Roms released in such a short time. This will settle down as development slows.
Maybe the best way round this is to put a front screen to all the forums giving a very brief guide how to use the Wiki and search facility. I'd also include a statement that any question which have been asked and answered before will be deleted and that the poster needs to research the question. This message could also be linked to show on a posters screen for each of his first 5 posts so he couldn't bypass the warning/advice.
Just my opinions, but I hate sensoring and eliteism (don't let the dummies ask ME questions), particularly when the sensors have benefitted from the source they are sensoring.

i wasnt talking about sensoring... just preaching the knowledge before you make a choice to flash or cook or play with roms....
Its not the fact that questions are asked - questions are good!
Its the fact that people make no effort to research and find out the answers for themselves before asking it. How many times has "How do I fix the keyboard on my 8525", "How do I enable GPS", "How do I flash this ROM", etc - when the answers are all there, easy to find.
Maybe an alternative would be to have 3 levels of each forum, Jumior, member and senior...
Juniors could only post in junior forum but could read all 3,
Members could post in member and junior forums and read all 3
Seniors could post and read all 3.
Any member or senior who posts too many 'dumb' threads could be warned and possibly bumped down a level by the mods.
This way anyone can help people less experienced, and the less experienced can learn from everyone by reading. Any posts you make will be to your peers but may be answered by your seniors.
Also, the likes of Kyphur and Olipro who are actively developing can ask questions and get answers from the people with the most experience.
I still don't like this too much because there is no reason for more senior members to read junior forums, but it does leave the whole forum accessible to all and puts the emphasis on juniors to ask and answer questions to gain knowledge and thus get 'promoted'.
Why does every forum end up with this debate? Cos its human nature...
People get excited about flashing new roms to their devices and go ahead and do it and then panic when their beloved gadget doesn't work properly...
Yes - people should read the wiki before a) doing stuff and b) asking question but if everyone behaved exactly the way they "should", the world would be a really boring place.
I personally made sure that I read up before flashing WMXL1 and 2 - they were my first xda flashes - but I understand why loads of people dont. Yes repeat questions are annoying, but in some cases they are asked again because the answer given is too high-brow for the noobs to understand...
Oh and its "censor" !
For bugs and enhancements tracking my personal favorite is Jira. Very widespread among open source and commercial projects. They have a Community & Open Source License model where you can get it for free ...

don't agree - don't like it - should'nt do it !
How do you judge who is a noob and who is not? and who does that?
What criteria will be used?
We are opening up a big and unnecessary debate here.
Actually with all stupid questions on this site, we do actually learn from each other at ALL levels.
This is what make this site an unbelievable success.
on this site i notice everything suck as rooting instructions have (wifi only) after it...
mine is 3g also so is there a difference when rooting for the 3g to the wifi only?
and why isnt there anything here about the wifi and 3g model?
everyone has just recreated the wheel with more threads and instructions about rooting than i have had hot dinners.... is that just in case we dont understand the first one then you might with someone else....

This is your first post on this forum, and you start a new thread to complain? Did you consider asking anyone a question, or maybe just reading first? Rooting guides are useful, even if duplicative. Complaint threads by brand new users are not. If we only had some moderators around here, this thread would be deleted soon....

So you're asking for yours to be deleted for being critical of the moderation? JK
But yeah I've noticed you've had some issues with your posts being moderated before.
BTW You're probably right about the OP not coming back too.
While not wanting to start a small scale virtual war of words, he DID ask several questions, and frankly, I actually agree 100% with the OP. That is to say, there should be a dedicated sticky to rooting both the wifi and 3g/4g versions (with all other instances deleted). This would certainly help prevent a lot of the 100's of needless responsed to "I bricked my xx" etc that I've noticed on numerous forms.
To jump on someone because they make a suggestion, simply because they are new, smacks of elitist behaviour. Telling them to wade through 100's of irrelevant and, here's the important part, misleading posts is just plain mean. One thing I'd love to seem mandated/enforced is the inclusion of the exact model one is referring to when posting (especially when it comes to modifying OEM internals). This woud really go a long way in clarifying what is clearly confusing nomenclature (providing instructions to accomplish XX on a Galaxy tab or 10.1 etc provides little to no useful info - what was Samsung thinking when they names these?) There can be some serious hand-wringing moments when one is tinking with a $700 piece of hardware, especially if one accidently uses the wrong procedure on the wrong tab - the forums are full of pleas for assistance AFTER the fact because this lack of clarification. Tolerance and wisdom are what's called for here, not thumbing one's nose.

If you're supporting the the Op... Why didn't you answer all the specific questions?
While I dont mind the op posting in the right place even though new and every one was new once, wading through hundreds if not thousands of posts, has helped me learn so much I wouldn't want to have done it any other way. I'm even glad I semi bricked mine a few times.
I agree naming threads could be improved.
There are also threads that tell you what exactly what hardware you have which should be read BEFORE doing anything in threads with a warning at the beginning of most if not all them. There are posts specific to your device IF you know what your device actually is before you [email protected] with it. I learned this the hard way myself. So if you know what your device is and are in the correct forum and thread you wouldn't have all the needless responses to "I bricked my xx". I think everyone should read to find out if they should be in the 10.1 or 10.1v forums or the threads are relevant to the device they have.
Mandating inclusion of exact models your post is for is moot because it's almost always there, at least in the OP. One must know what model they have before following the guide, thread, or post. This is what should be mandatory.
I agree fully with the tolerance issue. It just gets very hard to be tolerant with someone having problems because they followed a guide or post NOT knowing what device they owned before messing with it. If you know what your device is you don't need to read irrelevant posts. This would keep responses from becoming elitist and mean for many people.
Anyway, I don't or didn't intend to be mean or come off as an elitist towards the op.
But that being said the way the forum is already setup, if you are a noob, as I myself still am, you have to read a$$loads of threads before [email protected] with your device. If you don't do it before you will be doing it after you [email protected] up you device because you didn't take the time beforehand.
The only solution currently is to read and get your facts down first. Then proceed. Unless someone is going to spend thousands of hours renaming and cleaning up threads and then spend the rest of their life constantly modding the forum for free as mods already try to do for free.
The preceding post is just my opinion and rambling no offence or ill will is intended or should be taken.

Re: Why didn't I answer OP's Q's
Simple... I am in the same boat. I have the 4G, and have read hundreds of posts (if not more). I am unable to locate with 100% ceertainty the info I am seeking. It seems most all threads are contaminated with bits from WiFi, 4G, HSPA+ etc so it's a crap shoot. I believe you just commented on another thread where-by someone did follow a document for "4G" with rotten results due to the fact that 4G really isn't 4G on some networks (HSPA+) - this drives home my point entirely. It is necessary for complete disclosure (model types, carrier etc) when contributing to such a thread. As for stating the OP should know exactly what hardware they have, true, but they can only go by what's on the box Knowing what I have, and coming here trusting "experts" doesn't preclude the "experts" from providing an answer that doesn't match the OPs hardware. The problem isn't with the OP, the issue in that case is which folks giving "THE" answer (in good faith of course) which happens to be incorrect. Either way, having 100% accurate stickies, in my opinion, should be a priority. Allowing misinformation (however well intentioned) to remain on a resource/reference board is somewhat irresponsible.
I think you're blaming the posters wrongly. The blame falls with on the manufacturers and the people modding devices just by name not by actual device. IMHO
Yes, I replied to a post about the misleading naming of devices, but ultimately responsibility of knowing what device your modding falls upon the modder. Not the posters or even the manufacturers.
Should the manufacturers change their practice? Not really. They don't want you to mod it in the first place, but yes they are wrong for false advertising basically.
Posters can only assume you have what you say you have as far as specific devices. So they are just responding to the best of their ability not being able to know anything except what you tell them. They can't read minds and can't be expected to keep up with all the devices that may not really be what the manufacturers call them.

So you have a question. We've all had them. In fact, many have had the exact same question you have right now. And most of those questions have already been answered. So please search for those answers before posting a new thread.
Now that the dust has settled with the unlocking, ICS leak, mainver and OTA, most likely there's already a guide written to deal with the exact same issue you want to ask about.
Not only will you get your answer more quickly, you will also keep from cluttering up the message board with yet another thread asking the same thing others have asked and have answered already.
Lately there has been a plethora of new threads asking basic questions that have been answered many times and definitely have guides already written and it gets increasingly frustrating to have to see these over and over again.
So please, search first. Research. Read. And then if you really can't find the answer post in an appropriate existing thead. If there really isn't one, then start a new thread.

Seriously, there had to be a bunch of people who have just purchased this phone recently. I'm sure the sale that Big Red is having isn't going to help things. I love that people are getting this phone because it's just amazing, but people do need to read everything before they just start posting questions. And they need to read everything before they start flashing crap on their phones. Just because you did it on one phone doesn't mean you'll know what you're doing on this one. Ou S-On, Dev Unlocked Rezound is a different beast altogether.

I came from a Droid X and before I picked up the rezound, figured all android devices were the same! Boy was I wrong This has been a learning curve but in time Ive learned a LOT from reading all of the threads in this forum.I've only had a single mainver error, which was easily remedied. Other than that, I've been a flashaholic for the last 2 weeks trying to find something that feels like home and I still havent bricked my phone . It's all good man.
The funny part is, I completely agree with you and this thread. I'm actually a little ashamed that I didn't find you're thread originally.
Really though, thanks to you and all the other devs that do all this hard work. I'd really like to be able to spend the time and learn how to do some of the Rom development, or theme dev'ing, or something to contribute. Not in the cards though with a busy job as a software support tech, and a 3 year old and another on the way at home. Time isn't on my side for hobbies like this. So, to get to the point - thanks a lot, much appreciated.
Its actually getting to the point that searching for stuff ends up a waste of time due to the clutter. You know how many threads have something to do with the mainver issue alone in General? Almost a hundred. That is insane. And some people wonder why others get grumpy when they don't use a search function. What would be awesome if we added extra code to the site and when the hit the Start Thread button, it asks them if they did a search.
It will show a list of other threads with the same words in the title, but they aren't just from the Rezound forums. But as con mentioned, the people who don't search aren't going to look at those either.

You mean like when there are about 9 different threads going at the same time to tell everybody that "Sense sucks" ???
the only problem is, if your browsing these forums via your rezound, search doesnt work properly. if you tap on the "search" button, once the pop up appears and you try to enter text, the pop up disappears and you cant search. it does that on both dolphin hd & opera. dont recall if ive tried on another browser.... but as it happens on more then 1, its not a problem from one particular browser.

I know that some of us here are in a learnin process and some of us here know this stuff like the back of our hand. Am I doing something wrong with the question that I ask? Or with the type of post that I make? Or is it because I am a newbie? Yes, like I said I`m new to of this but want to learn, not a free ride but to learn. Since rooting my Samsung Galaxy S2 I have flashed it so far with the UnNamed rom and ShoStock. Both where pretty rock solid roms. And I did it all by what I have learned on XDA. But the very few post that I have made, to be exact 7 post with not no replys. Am I doing something wrong? Or am I expecting more than I derserve for being a newbie? Oh, I did get one reply! That one of my post where moved but yet not helping me with the question. Can someone, anyone shine some light on anyone of my questions. It would be most appreciated. Thanks so much
Moved to proper section
If you read and respect the rules you´ll understand where to properly post your threads, that way you´ll get the help you need
Heh, looking through your post history you've made threads in the AT&T, Epic4G and now I9100 variant forums. I'm guessing this was originally posted somewhere random too judging by the above post.
Step back a bit, find out your exact model and clearly and concisely think about your problem before READING (not posting) in the correct section. If after doing some reading you still need to post, put it in the correct place.
Considering you are on AT&T and in Chicago, you probably have the i777 if you purchased the phone from AT&T.
If you bothered to read where you posted, people DID reply to you so it just seems like you didnt read them. There is also no point in posting in the General Discussion of XDA if the question you have is about a specific phone. People cant read your mind to know which phone you have, what you did that lead to the problem. Post in the Q/A section on XDA that is for your phone (i777).
After checking the i777 section for just a couple sections, if you actually read the stickies, they provide you guidelines on what to do, so try to at least read them.
Thanks

Thanks Rocky23, I learning that more day by day that there are numerous help out there besides XDA, you just have to look for it. Plus the tips and positive comments that I have been receiving from other members are guiding me in the right direction. Its really hard getting into a game and being the new guy. I just have to keep it in mind that everyone here was once new to the game also. Thanks for your comments. Have a great day Rocky.
I have noticed that people in the q and a section are not posting nearly enough information in their post or title to get the information they need. This causes people to ask lots of questions and delay getting the answer they need. So this guide will show you what you need to include in your post to get the most efficient answer to your question.
We'll start with the Title:
- Please do not just say "HALP, PHONE BROKE" or "HELP" , etc.
- You need to be precise, and describe what you're looking for in your thread.
Next, the information you need to state before you even get into asking your question.
- The make of your phone. There are many different variants of your device. I9100 G/M/P/T
- Are you rooted/unrooted?
- What rom you are using? And which version? -and- What kernel are you using? And which version?
- Have you flashed any mods/scripts/themes?
- Have you changed DPI? If yes, to what?
- Have you done anything to try to solve your issue? This would be very valuable information.
- Please (if on stock firmware) dial *#1234# and post the results (thanks to fxrb)
Then you can ask your question.
- Do not ask "What rom/kernel/theme is the best?" -or- Something that you have not searched for (it is infact very obvious if you havent)
- Be specific and precise in what you want/need. Do not write a 10, 000 word essay, or a 3 word question.
- Pictures say a 1000 words
Important things to remember:
- Be polite: People never want to help someone who wont appreciate it, or is rude to them. Remember your p's and q's
- Do not bump your thread: It gets annoying and against the rules
This is under construction and will take a bit to include all of the information needed. I know there are lots of more experienced users than I, and would love feedback of what to include. Please do not hesitate to post in the thread or even PM me with information you think needs to be included in this thread.
Stickies
- DO NOT POST A "What's the best ROM/Kernel/Theme?" THREAD!
- [Newbies][Experienced Users][RCs] New members friendly Q&A thread
- [KERNEL][REF][Q&A] Siyah 5.0+[ICS/CM10] 6.0b5+[JB/CM10.1] +DISCUSSION+. NON-DEV!!!
- Australian AU Galaxy S II (help/rooting/updates,etc)
- SGS2 Canadian Thread (Bell/Virgin/Sasktel/Rogers) Root/Unlock/Firmware/Modems/Mods
- New here? READ THIS THREAD FIRST. What Is Recovery & Download Mode?
- Frequently Asked Questions
One more: That's it
nice this should put an end to all "not understandable" questions out there

The thought is nice... but unless this is stickied (and even then), this thread will fall off the first page, and since the vast majority of n00bs (not new members, but "n00bs" - there's a huge difference) won't search, they won't see it.
Heck, there have been dozens of posts since you posted this that have been terribly short of any information.
But I applaud the thought.
You have to think how them noobs operate. They muck up their phone, stick the symptoms in a google search, and want an answer asap.
So they are not going to spend hours reading rules and stickies or use the search function.
I spent a week reading about stuff for the x10i I had before I decided to do anything to it.That way at least I had half an idea what helpers were talking about when/if I got into trouble.
When I joined this forum the s2 looked a lot more complicated and the forum looked a lot more "vicious"(like give that guy 20xlashes since he didnt do a search).
Its a tough world lol

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping eventually happens, it gets stickied.

Yea, but we have to try. At least now we have something to guide them to and for the new people to refer to. If we dont at least have a guide for how to get good answers to their questions theirs no standard.. Now there is
Nice thread
hope users follow this
Doubt many people will take notice of this (for a whole host of reasons; don't get me started), but props for trying (thanked OP).
Edit - Oops. Sorry. So used to giving crap threads on here one star I did it to yours accidentally (intended to give it 5).
+1 to search first before posting.

Yeah, but now we have something to refer the horrible q and a posts that have no info to. And dont worry about the rating... it happens
Do you have anything to add to it? It feels like I''m missing something
Oh absolutely. As I said, good that you've tried, I just don't see it making any difference is all. 90% of people who post here are idiots, that won't change.
No, nothing to add. I think you've covered it well.

in relation to search and read before asking questions...
just wanted to share that I've got a nicely setup dualboot with the siyah kernel, RootBox JB 2.1 as my second rom successfully patched with the autopatcher 1.6 and a fully working pdroid. That's it...
Since i have less than 10 posts I cannot thank the developers in their respective threads (at least that's how i get the message). I think this is my 5th post so I guess i never make it to the developers section because i really don't know what questions i can ask and, answers i could give are all answered...
this must be a "new member" problem rather than a n00b one?
Regards and 1 post closer

Yeah, but don't just get 10 posts just to say "thank you" in the rom Dev section. I van personally say that devs hate this as it clogs up the thread and doesn't add anything to anything. That is why xda has the thanks button, and the devs appreciate that more than saying it. In fact, it you really want to say thank you donate to them. Even if its 1 euro they will be very grateful.

course not it was kind of a semi-sarcastic post, I have more to say than thanks I spent countless hours reading and learning stuff (in general, it is fun after all!) and as far as this forum is concerned (which is really helpful btw!) it's difficult to then act (for the time being!). Example: Somehow I managed to post in a developer's thread 1-2 months ago, first a problem then I found the solution and posted it myself. I then got PMed by someone asking me for help. Only problem is I never got an email notification in spite of having a thread subscription so I didn't bother to check my PMs. As for donating, absolutely.
Regards and 4 more to go

OK awesome. I'm used to people who just want to say thanks, so I have to mention something like that. But taking a look at your sign up date, of looks like you might be able to post in the Dev section without having 10 posts. I believe if you signed up before a certain date you don't need the posts. And of looks like you might fit in there. I would try it you never know
Edit: but enough off topic

just tested again and it seems to work now
thx for letting this off-topic slide
All the best!

Sadly I agree to everybody believing that this thread will not be read by those who should do so, sorry. However, if by accident just one out of thousand will read it then there will be 'only' 999 bad questions remaining - a small progress.
For this one out of thousand I would like to contribute something to the information section of this thread. For basic information I often ask people to dial *#1234# and post the result. As this thread is in the Galaxy SII forum this should work, at least as long as people are on stock firmware (probably use this conditionally ?).
