Reinstalling after ROM update - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

How do some of you get back up and running after a ROM upgrade? Yesterday I decided to bite the bullet and go for DCD3.2.6 (Turns out I was some how back at 3.2.3...I am new to ROM flashing so cut me a little bit of slack.
After the ROM update I couldn't do the carrier updyate, but no issues yet. I then restored a SPB backup from a few days ago and it all seemed to go fine. Is there a better/more efficient way to be diung this so that I am not undoing any changes in the new ROM?

I just have all the CAB files for the 3rd party apps on my SD card... and an SDConfig.txt file that installs them. I also have a Registry install CAB file that puts specific registry entries in. They say that SPB Backup is one of the good ways.

New O2 UK rom Downfalls

Hey guys, I have just upgraded my rom and found a couple of downfalls with the new version.
1) the extended rom tools to unhide and unlock no longer work - extended Rom now seems inaccessable
2) the internal memory area called 'Storeage' has disappeared also, leaving me with 16k less memory than I had before the upgrade!!
Any ideas how we can get these back??
I don't think it is to do with the ROM upgrade specifically.
Have you installed any other software?
I had this a couple of times a while back whilst I was experimenting with different ROMs and BT stacks, doing backups and restoring, etc.
Have you tried a hard reset?
Also, look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=10473 where other people had same problem.
Thanks for the info; your'e right:
I checked the other thread you mentioned, and have given it a go...
If you perform a hard reset my device with the new rom has the storeage available and the extended rom unlock tools work again. Restoring a backup and they both disappear.
Looks like I am going to have to rebuild my system :-(
I suspect that restoring an old backup replaces lots of windows related files and registry settings. I tried to install the fonix voicedial from the ext rom post-restoring and it claimed i had the wrong ROM version!
So yes, a rebuild is necessary
Certainly seems that way. Oh well, good luck!
Running new upgrade over unofficial upgrade
Just being lazy here - can you just do a hard reset and run the new 02 update over the 1.72.126 ver. as it says wrong version when you attempt to run it from after a normal reset (incorrect language error)?
Cheers,
Ste G.
As a general rule it is never a good idea restoring a backup over a different ROM version - bit like restoring a W2K backup over an XP install. That said, the latest version of Sprite is supposed to be ROM upgrade safe.
I always use the opportunity to clean out all the crap by doing a full reload - bit like the twice yearly Windows rebuilds on my PC.

Best backup/restore practices when migrating to new ROM?

Hi everyone. With all of these awesome new ROMs coming out I am constantly tempted(and often pull the trigger) to keep trying them out. I have been using Sprite Backup 6.1 which has a feature that saves device data for doing just this and is supposed to be able to do a device restore even with a new rom. I'm skeptical of this considering that many of these roms are built with OS's that are not yet released. Therefore, how can Sprite test the restore fully? The restore options are rom, device, safe, restore databases etc. Do you experienced rom testers/devs have any advice on the best way to painlessly migrate the Mogul to a new rom without installing all of your programs and doing all registry tweaks again etc? I want to try the new DCD 2.2 but I just spent the last 2 days reinstalling everything from my original gps rom to the 2.1 rom. Thanks again for all the help.
I believe the only way is to re-install everything. I think using Sprite merges all the files leaving more junk in your system. I keep upgrading just like you and manually install every file on every update. Its the cost of having your phone run up to date.
ouch, that is going to give me pause before going to dcd2.2. I guess I will wait a bit to rest up a bit since I stayed up until 3am this morning getting things tweaked with the new rom.

Wow -- really 2 days?
I have mine down to a science now. From the moment I start the upgrade to when I am finished is now 45min or less (my best has been 38).
I have created a doc that list step-by-step what I need to do next; therefore, eliminating the guess work and me trying to remember what's next.
Good Times!!!
I have a bunch of cabs on my storage card that I run. Then I put in my outlook server info and the phone is basically back to normal.
I have heard of the 2577 method on the SD card. I personally have not tried it. Apparrently you create a folder named 2577 on the storage card with the cab files and a autorun.exe file. (EDIT: The AutoRun shoudl be in the Stock ExtRom). This should be in the Stock ExtRom. I have read they use this when doing a lot of PPC for companies.

[Q] Newbie - confuzed ??

Hi:
I just got my Viewsonic Gtablet today. It is still powering for 1st time use, I'm waiting for the green light to come on.
Meanwhile I've been researching Rom's to put on it and I decided to go with TnT Litet 5.0
but when I went to find a TnT light Rom I see it's been retired and Mountain Laurel now seems to come into play, but reading on that it seems maybe Viewsonic themselves have a better firmware now.
I'm a little confuzed as to what I should actuaally be looking at to install.
C'mon, what rocks??
and a how to would be great
also, in previous adventures I've always backed up stuff before i continue (xboxes, sat recievers and such with saving a bin.
the videos i've looked at do not address that issue,
is it not neccessary to have a back up in case one screws up?
Viewsoninc released a new update with a locked bootloader and then pulled it. The custom roms are ahead of the vendor so I would try one of them. I beleive the rom you are refering to is on the locked bootloader and is supported elsewhere. There are several roms to choose from here.
Installing bekit 0.8 clockwork will allow you to make backups
not a good idea
Personally i don't think it's a good idea to use TNT 5 because it's 1.2 based ROM. If you really into TNT ROMs i suggest getting a lower version. Or... you can use my favorite ROM Vegan GingerEdition

Vegan Ginger is a great rom and to be a little safer but also have a super fast one try the Calkulin-Clemsyn one. As far as backup goes - Clockworkmod will allow you to back up a complete image of your rom with everything inside it (think of backing up windows with office installed inside of it). Titanium backup will allow you to back up just your apps with their associated data (think of backing up Word and all the documents you created in Word). The difference? You try rom A and use it for a while. You've downloaded apps, played games, etc. and then you want to try rom B. You do a titanium bakcup of your apps and store them somewhere like your pc. You do a clockwork backup of rom A and store that on your pc. Now, you install Rom b. You use Titanium backup to restore your apps (so you don't have to download them all again and you don't have to start playing angry birds from the beginning and enjoy rom B for awhile. After a week you think, "I like Rom A better". If you've done much with your apps you can again do a titanium backup of them to restore. If you haven't done much you can just skip that step. Now do a clockwork backup of rom b and store it on your pc. Retrieve the original backup of rom A from the pc and restore it with clockwork. Voila, it is back with all the apps inside of it and you go forward from there. Making backups periodically is a good idea in case something gets screwed up. Now the steps to do all these things are available in the stickys in this forum. It takes a while to learn your way around but the fun of messing with your gear, trying roms, changing things up.... worth the learning curve. Have fun!

[Q] NOOB question Zendroid install and stock restore

Hi Folks,
as you can probably see this is my first post to XDA. please be kind.
I have used CM7 on both the LG g2x and Samsung Tmobile Vibrant. (T959)
I got a little tripped up trying to go back from CM7 to stock nandroid backup on my Vibrant. I failed to understand the differences in the filesystem layout.
After much jiggering and finagling I did get it back to stock... But you can understand that I don't want to repeat that...
I'm thinking of installing the latest Zendroid. I already am running 2.2 UVKB5 with root. CWM. Cmenard overstock kernel and Voodoo sound.
I make regular backups both with Titanium and CWM....
If I install the latest Zendroid, will I be able to go back to my previous backups?
As far as I understand Zendroid is just a streamlined build of the Samsung OS.
I could upgrade to Zendroid and fallback
Also does the dock audio functionality work with zendroid ? Not a dealbreaker just a question.

nandroid does not back up your kernel. So if you are going to gingerbread then you cannot restore a nandroid backup of froyo without flashing a froyo kernel first, and even then i'm not 100% sure it would work
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
not going to GB
Nope. Zendroid is I *believe* Froyo kernel.
The problem I had trying to restore from CM down to original OS might have been both a kernel issue and a FS issue. I *think* the problem had to do with the different partition table and PIT used by CM7 vs OG Samsung.
Anyhow. I'm a very literal person so I just want to know what I am looking at
before I do a wipe and a whole new install. I don't want to have to go thru the
whole ODIN process if I want to backout.

I would stay away from CWM (nandroid) backups. When you restore those, you are essentially overwriting the entire system and data partitions on the phone, and basically overwriting the entire rom with whats contained in your backup.
Titanium backups of applications are safe to restore, as well as a few system apps (contacts, dictionary, calendar, bookmarks, and Wifi access points are all I restore from the system apps in Titanium), but mostly with titanium you want to stay away from restoring the red and green colored apps. White are fine though and won't cause any issues.
Basically, if you flash ZenDroid, then do a CWM restore, you will lose all of the streamlining and tweaks that are in my build, and you will really be running stock again.
And yes, ZD is a Froyo (KB5) based rom, and a Froyo based kernel.
Dock audio, should work, but I don't have a dock to test it with. I didn't take anything out of the build that effects it TMK, so it should work.
EDIT - and while you will not have to Odin to go from ZD to a different rom, being good friends with Odin and flashing stock firmware from time to time is always high on my list of recommendations, jsut to alleviate any ghosts of roms past.
Thanks !
That's what I wanted to know.
I just didn't want to deal with any of the CM7 issues when trying to restore.
I do realize that if I install zendroid then restore I go back to my pre zendroid state. I am just making sure that I can roll back to normal if I have issues.
Stock touchwiz is a bit bloated but the basics work good and I get decent battery life. CM7 was pretty heavy on battery life.
I had to use CM7 on the LG G2x because LG couldn't be bothered to produce production ready software before they released the thing.
The Samsung software does have some bloat but runs OK.
thanks br!ck'd for making this build. I will let you know how it's rocking once I install and test.

[Q] Stock to UnNamed

Ok, so I have been waiting for ICS patiently since I got my phone and didn't want to jump to any other rom but I am going to have 2 weeks off work and I know I will want to try and flash something out of boredom.
Few questions...
Switching from Stock Rooted to Unnamed
1. If I want to keep all my saved game/app info I just need to do Titanium Backup of user apps correct?
2. Will I have a problem playing MKV, AVI on the stock player, and will TW widgets like Picture Gallery work?
3. And if I do not like UnNamed (doubt I wont like it) do I just need to do a CWM recover to go back to exactly where I was then restore my apps/games from Titanium?
My main concern is loosing anything, thanks in advance for the help and I will make sure to hit that thanks button.

If you backup with Tibu before installing the rom, just be sure to only restore missing apps with data. Don't install any system apps or system data. I think you need pro version for that feature.

UnNamed is based on stock. You should be able to run anything that you can run on stock. You'll still have tw unless you change it. The widgets will work.

If you first install a CWM enabled kernel, you can make a nandroid backup before you flash the rom, and then return to stock plus CWM enabled kernel from the nandroid backup. After that, you could even flash the stock kernel back if you wanted. In this case, your current configuration would be retained.
Made the switch earlier than I thought.
Thanks for the answers, when I get home ill play with it some more.
One additional factor about unnamed is because its based on Stock you can still use Samsung Kies for backup/restore...Now I have moved on to ICS'd ROM from Task and you cannot use the USB kies.
This becomes even more enticing now that gtg has posted the 2.0.0 Unnamed update and it includes much of the animation that is in ICS. Now I think there is even a 2.0.0a that included the latest Entropy daily.

Yea I wish I waited one more day before flashing, but I will use 1.3.2 for a few days.
Should I update to Entropy or Siyah latest kernal or I should leave it at what 1.3.2 came with?
At least I realized how easy it is to actually flash and retain all my stuff.
Missed call logs but I got the app just now, kinda really needed that and rejected list.
I had the same question. Easy answer is that you can flash UnNamed 2.0.0 right over the 1.3.2. using the zip on your SD and CWM. That way you can just continue and don't have to reset/install anything. Worked like a charm. Don't know about call logs. Didn't matter to me. Finally, you can easily flash updated kernels like the Entropy ones.
I think he recommended to format 1.3.2 to install 2.0, but I flashed over and it was fine.
gtg started out recommending factory update and wipe but it's playing out that you can just install, what is is now, 2.1.1 right over 1.3.2 and there have been no issues on that account. gtg is putting an incredible amount of work into this.
