Alltel GPS issue--new data - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

OK, so those of you following my stuff know of myongoing saga with getting GPS to work well on my Alltel 6800.
Here is what happened today:
I drove to Orlando, FL.
I fired up Google maps, an dtold it to use gps.
I got a lock in about 1 minute.
I then closed google maps and tried HTC GPS--got a lock in about 20 seconds.
I ran google maps with the gps on and off throughout the evening in Orlando--working perfectly.
Drove home to sarasota, and tried to get a lock with google maps--cannot get a lock.
So:
Its not the phone (that I can tell)
Its not a setting
What to do? Isn't there some magic bullet for me?
jtg
dcd 3.2.6
radio 3.42.50
Alltel

Sometimes After i use the gps I cannot get a relock and i need to do a soft reset to get it working again. I tend to reset my phone daily anyways but this seems to help me.

GPS chipset hardware defective?

Alright...something really weird is going on with my device.
I'm not sure it's even the rom or the radio firmware.
I flashed flawlessly as I've posted in numerous threads. Everything worked right off the bat, calls, data, MMS, SMS etc. I fired up Google Maps and it locked 7 sats very quickly. All of a sudden though, I've noticed Google Maps and Live Search do not work whatsoever. Haven't changed any GPS settings at all. When I choose 'Use Gps' in google maps it says Seeking GPS Satellites, remains at 0 and never locks any. Same with Live Search, just sits there saying Getting GPS Position. When I choose My Location in google maps it says "my handset doesn't support my location (beta)."
I installed Holux GPS Viewer and it finds the GPS on com 4. I open it and it displays all the nonsense at the bottom in the log, but when I switch to the status tabs, I get NOTHING. No red bars, no blue bars, just blank. Clear view of the sky and everything.
I tried hard resetting and reinstalling the apps...same thing.
Any ideas?

Since you've already hard reset & reinstalled the software, the only advice I can offer is to go back to a previous ROM or radio and see if the GPS starts working again. If so, then it's probably not defective.
did you use QuickGPS?
Yeah quickgps downloads the data...looks like it worked. But then like I said...nothing. Had google maps going for my 30 min commute to work today seeking sats....not one. My flash to 3.0.0 went absolutely flawlessly...and gps worked originally...which is why I'm questioning the integrity of the hardware.
This is what happened to mine as well..... It worked great right after the original flashing to 3.35 radio and DCD 3.0.1 ROM, but over the last couple it started taking alot longer to locate..... I would have to click on Use GPS in Google maps like 4-5 times on and off and it would finally sync up..... with this issue and the power drain I went back to the 3.27 radio and 2.3.2 ROM... So far the battery drain has stopped , and when I go outside this concrete and steel building I'll try the GPS again....
Are you both Verizon users as well? I hit the same type of issue and it resolved itself over a few days. I did the same type of recovery.
I realized what the problem was...though I'm a little embarrassed.
The Location setting was set to E911 only. The very weird thing about that is, I was under the impression that ever since gps and revA have been leaked into dcd's roms, the DEFAULT setting for location was on and not e911. It's been default on 2.2.0, 2.2.1, 2.2.6, 2.3.1, and 2.3.2...I've used them all. When I flashed to 3.0.0 it was defaulted to e911. Strange.
Oh well, gps works amazing now...locks satellites in under 30 seconds usually.
Are you guys using quick GPS?
I don't use it and get great results. I just tested my GPS to see if I am having the same issue. ( I haven't reset my phone in 2 days) I used that program that boots up GPS and then I used Google maps.
I didnt get a lock so then I clicked on use GPS and it worked but it used AGPS. From there I clicked on my location and within 15 seconds it started using GPS and found my location.
Im on Verizon.

GPS Crash?

Well i have google maps and GPSToday installed on my sprint mogul with dcd rom on it, but i have one problem. Whenever I get a lock on a GPS location my phone crashes after 1-2 minutes. I tried searching if anyone else had this problem but so far it seems to be only me any help guys?

3.39 killed my gps?

Hey guys,
I recently upgraded my phone ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402027 ) and it seems to have killed my gps. i have just loaded up 3.39 and dcd 3.1.6. I ran all the cabs like i was told and then installed all my programs, including gps gate, the htc gps tool, quick gps, and iguidance.
Before when i had the 3.35 i would get a lock in my house within 3-6 minutes. but since the upgrade i have been unable to get a lock. GPS gate always stays in yellow (running ok but not getting positional data) and if not, it is red with the message invalid data coming from the serial port. Iguidance constantly sees satellites but is unable to get a lock sometimes seeing as many as 8-9 satellites but simply unable to get a lock. same goes for the htc gps tool.
Frustrated by this, i read about the Titan gps fix, that required going through qpst programing , and read that many Verizon users have had success simply using this fix. After trying this fix, my situation has not changed and i am still unable to get a lock. I figure i might go and try driving around with this phone tomorrow seeing if i am able to get a lock outside my home.
If you guys have seen anything like this and have a word of wisdom i would love to hear about it.
Have you tried a hard reset? If that fails, re-flash the phone. 3.39 should not have killed your GPS, but it's possible that the GPSone chipset simply failed on its own. I personally had this happen to my XV6800.....
I have done a hard reset and re-installed all my apps, Iam still unable to get a proper lock on my phone as of right now using google maps or gpsgate. I am going to reflash 3.39 along with the dcd again tommorow to see if that will fix; before i do that i am going to make sure that the hard reset did or did not fix it by driving around and seeing if i get a lock then.
You shouldn't need to drive around. In my experience, locks tend to be quicker when you are standing still. I've never tested it, but it at least seems that way. So just stay in the same place (and save gas $$$). To simply reinstalling all your apps, use user configuration or Sashimi (my preference)
Heh, Looks like i spoke to soon, I went it seems that my google maps just got a lock so i assume everything is working as it should now.
I really appreciate all the support guys.
Sweet, let us know if you have anymore issues. Also, a commonly overlooked step is to enable the Location ON setting instead of 911 only.

GPS Hell

I've read just about every GPS related post on this board, and I haven't found a solution.
I've got a Verizon XV6800 with DCD 3.2.3 (also tried 3.2.2) Radio version 3.42.30 (also tried 3.39.10 and 3.42.02) with Bootloader 2.47 (also tried 2.40). I've done the titan GPS fix. I have never gotten a GPS lock on even one satellite! I've tried this in the middle of a parking lot on a clear day while standing outside my car for 30 minutes.
I'm looking at GPSViewer (holux) and it sometimes shows satellites (not locked; in red) but after about a minute that disappears and I get nothing. The Satellite's always show over the N on the "GPS Status" page. GoogleMaps never shows a satellite only "Searching for Satellites (0)..."
Now I've just noticed that I'm indoors (in the middle of a building) and GPSViewer still occasionally shows a satellite (in red) and then it disappears.
I've tried the *228,2 and the *22899, I've flashed the radio rom with bootloader 2.40 and 2.47.
Can anyone think of anything else to try? Is it just me?
Thanks in advance.

is Location set to 'On'?
External GPS Settings to COM 4 and Baud 4800?
GPS Settings correct in Google Maps?
Sorry, my mistake for not mentioning that.
Yes, Location is on. And Com4, 4800.
Googlemaps is setup to use the Windows GPS (Start->programs->External GPS)
are you positive you did the GPS fix correctly? if you open that port in QPST again and read from phone, are call the gpsOne settings as they were when you applied the fix?
Yep, all nine boxes are checked and when I closed the QPST and opened again, did the re-read and sure enough all 9 boxes are still checked.

i would try a reflash.
reflash dcd 2.3.3.
install carrier cab
reflash radio
check all settings
*228 2
*22899
theres no reason why that shouldnt work for you. if it doesnt, then there is a hardware issue.
something else you may wanna try is using COM 5 instead of 4. its a long shot, but on my first 6800 the GPS was on COM 5 for some reason.
First, did you follow this link here to the letter?
If so, did you try using HTC GPS tool like GC states here?
Com4/baud rate 4800/Clear Memory
Click Open, then click Nav. Init.
Then you need to wait for three or more red bars, then open the GPS program of your choice.
121, I attached the tool for you as well.
I did not try the HTC GPS tool, but the link you gave me goes to like 261 posts. I've read through most of them before, and followed #1 (I didn't download the third tool, the launcher, because I'm trying to use Google Maps, not TomTom).
Just tried the GPS tool and it doesn't seem to do much better. I see satellites for a little while but they don't lock.

Did you follow my instructions on how to lock with QuickGPS and GPS Tool?
My phone's acting very similar the sat's will be red and it'll take up to 30 mins to get a lock. The htc gps tool made it a lock a couple minutes faster but live search would take forever to start with gps tool running. taking 20 mins to lock makes it almost worthless. You should reflash and leave it running in your car or something for a hour and maybe you'll get a lock.
Hmm maybe I should make a youtube video of exactly what I do...because I'm noticing no issues.
I did try your instructions. Got two half full red bars, then they disappeared, never to return. The Information screen never populated with GPS location info and stayed in Mode 2, No position information for the whole time.
I will try shield's recommendation.
where are you located?
I'm still getting used to using mine but I'm wondering if the differences users see are the individual phones or the locations they are using them in. I bought a VX6800 a few weeks back and discovered these forums about a week later. I flashed my phone this past weekend (Olipro 2.40, Radio 3.42.30, and DCD 3.2.3). I then installed HTC GPS tool and Tom Tom 7 to start my experimenting.
My first test was HTC GPS tool in my back yard. It started picking up satellites after about a minute..then did red bars...then green bars..maybe two minutes total. I closed the tool and launched Tom Tom and it had satellites and was ready to go in about a minute.
Yesterday I launched Tom Tom in my driveway (front of the house ) before I left for work and it had a lock in the time it took me to enter in a POI for the train station. It guided me to the station and displayed accurate location and vehicle speed the whole way there.
When I got back to the station after work I launched Tom Tom to test it again on the way home. I waited a minute and it didn't lock so I started driving. I got halfway home with no lock so I closed Tom Tom and launched HTC GPS tool. It locked after a while and I launched Tom Tom which was then ready to go for the last leg of the trip.
This morning when I got in the car I launched Tom Tom directly again and it had a lock before I put in my POI, just like yesterday. I'm going to try again when I get back to the train station tonight.
I haven't reset or turned off my phone since I finished all of the flashing and installing this weekend. I'm curious if the GPS remembers the last satellites it saw or if I just have easy locking in front of my house and crappy signal down at the train station. As I get more into this I'll look into QuickGPS. I've also seen at least two threads mentioning reflashing the radio after flashing the ROM and setting up the carrier...I'm wondering if this helps as well and may give it a shot next weekend as I continue tinkering.

you should just soft reset your phone. more than likely the COM port is just locked up and needs to be released before it will work again. you should prime TT7 with GPS Tool or Google Maps to save yourself time. don't worry about any reflashing yet it sounds like you have everything already running correctly. just soft reset and try to lock with GPS Tool or another primer. when you close out any GPS apps, make sure you turn off the gps in the application then close it properly to help keep the COM port open. if you put your phone in standby while a GPS app is running or close the app with GPS still running, it could lock it up which needs a soft reset.
I use GC process and found it works for me. But as a Sys Tech Engineer I have found identical equipment does not all behave the same...
I do the GPS Tool, wait for 3-bars, Goolge maps, etc...and I get a lock. HOWEVER, I do a bit more. Seeing that this is Windows crappy OS I start with a full power down & up each day. Then I do the quick GPS to get updated GPS info (make sure you have a data connection going...ie open Explorer first then close it). Then I follow GC step exactly in another post as I stated above...connect. Sometimes it is about a minute or less but no more than 3-4.
Now I am very confident this works as GC tells us with the newest rom & radio. I am on rom 3.22 radio 3.42.30... I found for ME...I said ME and my area radio 3.39 (I downgraded to this one recently) gave me better results although his newer radio IS MUCH better than 3.39...as I stated before all devices look identical but they do not all behave the same..
The very last time I used it (this morning) I had almost instant lock with no primining; just launching Tom Tom. I'm not trying to troubleshoot anything at this point just experimenting and comparing experiences. If I don't get a quick lock when I get back to the train station tonight I will probably set it up to follow gc14's method tomorrow night and compare the results.
I don't know if I'll wind up adding anything valuable to this thread or not but when I'm looking to do this stuff for the first time I like to read as many details about other people's experiences as I can. I have a feeling in the long run I'll wind up using gc14's method as long as I get the same results.
Brooklyn, NY (NYC)
This is what I do to get a lock:
* Soft reset
* Connect to Internet
* Update QuickGPS
* Run HTC GPS Tool (Open port)
I do that or I never get a lock.
I have an XV6800, DCD 3.2.3, radio 3.42.30, and no priming software. I use google maps alone and get a lock usually within a minute.
I helped set up a friends XV6800 the same way, using the identical files (ROM, Radio, carrier cab, etc...) and he has the worst lock times. He can go days without ever succeeding in locking sattelites using google maps.
I would be willing to bet the devices are from different production runs and have one atom off in the chipset somewhere and that is the difference.
Thats totally a rant on my part, I doubt that is the actual case, but I notice occaisionally activesync pops up and stops my GPS from working. As soon as I close active sync and go to google maps and uncheck "use gps" and check it again it starts working again. I am probably crazy but so far that seems to be the only thing stopping my device from locking gps when active.
I am not very smart, but if the same files do not work on the same type, brand, etc.. phone then i would have to say that it must be some kind of small hardware issue.

no idea what else to do to get GPS working

hi, ive been searching the threads for days, and cant figure out why the gps never pickes up a signal. i have an xv6800 verizon. dcd 3.2.3 rom, radio 3.42.30 garmin mobile xt, and tried tomom 7 (both installed fine). installed the carrier cab, and gps fix, and used the gps on off app, also i have the location setting to on and not 911 only what else can i do.

I would get a program that shows the NMEA messages like GeoScout and see if you are even getting anything. Could be your GPS chip is hosed. Good luck sending that back in if it didn't come with it turned on like from Verizon. If you are in a clear space and you have reset the phone and you get no NMEA messages then I would think that either you have a bad flash and to start over or your GPS chip is bad.
Mine was acting similar which was every frustrating. SO tonight I flashed the new radio 3.42.50 and it did not help. I then reflashed DCD 3.2.5 and my GPS magically started to work again. I now lock 4 satellites from inside my house in about 15 seconds. The only bad thing is it shows my location in Gmap and Live about 10 blocks off. If I do a soft reset it has the correct location. If I exit maps and relaunch it is off 10 blocks or so again. No big deal really, I'm just happy it's working again.
