WMRegOptimizer - v0.1, October 6, 2008 - Windows Mobile Apps and Games

This small tool was originally inspired by this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=432966
About
WMRegOptimizer is a small tool that tries to optimize registry access - "defrag" it, if you will. It doesn't perfectly defrag it, but it goes a long way. This results in somewhat faster registry access for applications where this is the bottle-neck.
So this speeds up my device?
Not really. It lowers latency for certain system calls, which may result in some things being a bit faster. It doesn't magically make your device faster, but it may be more responsive in some situations.
Instructions
Install the attached CAB on your device, and run WMRegOptimizer from your start menu.
Before pressing Go, make sure you do the following things:
- Close all running applications
- Uncradle the device
- Put the device in airplane mode
- Be sure your battery isn't on the low side
After the app says it's done, close it, and soft-reset your device.
The app may appear to freeze at times. Do not soft-reset or terminate the app. It will continue. The entire process may take up to 5 minutes.
Things going wrong is unlikely but by no means impossible, we want to minimize that chance. We do this by making sure as few apps and services as possible are using the registry. Mucking about with the registry is a dangerous thing, and if things do go wrong, often a hard-reset is needed to put things right again.
Why soft-reset
Some apps 'monitor' the registry, these will be informed of the changes. This is why you may for example get a QuickGPS popup or your backlight will go to full-power all of a sudden when the app is running. Soft-resetting makes these apps reread the correct data from the registry. The whole operation also messes with the registry a LOT, and this slows down the device as well (probably a bug or memory/handle leak in registry handling somewhere in WM). Again, soft-resetting clears this up.
Testing
This tool has been tested on my Raphael (Touch Pro), Diamond and Kaiser (TyTN II), and seems to work fine. Your milage may vary. The interface isn't much, but hey, it's about what it does
PROVIDED "AS-IS". USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. DO NOT REDISTRIBUTE.
DO NOT USE THIS APPLICATION ON A STOCK ROM, YOU WILL BE SORRY. Custom ROMs usually have the right registry permissions/policies to do this, but if not, there's a bigger chance things may go wrong.

Chainfire you are amazing. Thank you for all your valuable contributions!

hahaha...
...will give this a swirl and report back...thanks for the creation!....am i correct in thinking that sktools has a similar feature with reg optimizer...

Faster = Better
Thank you for sharing.
Best regards,

Installed and ran the program , worked great !
Great job !

thank you very much Chainfire

it works fine on my polaris. thanks man

sounds good. Thanks 4 sharing.

Cool for Diamond
Hi Chainfire, thanks for the tool. I've just run it on my Diamond and everything still works I'm happy to say. I can't notice any immediate difference but then I didn't expect too, any way seems to be a good app. with no diamond issues, Thanks again.
So would you recommend running this regularly, I seem to install and un-install stuff all day long, so is this reg. defrag going to help keep my phone in slick order?

no good with my tilt, when i soft reset as said to do when it was finished it reset but got stuck on bootscreen

yes! its works!
thank you very much for your great program! I installed it on my Gene P3400 (lomlom's 20755 rom with manila2d), it definitely response quickly when try to go to setting - system, it is also have improvement when I try to make a call, it is much more faster when I try to send a sms from my contact list, strongly recommended to all Gene P3400 user!

Installed and ran it on my sprint mogul. All is well. Thank you for this, dschoenike

oh, nice thingy, will test it ASAP.

thank you, working great on my kaiser!
steph

Seemed to work fine.
The only issue that I had is the completion percentage never exceeded 80% even though the text eventually updated to Complete or whatever the done message happens to be.
Best regards,

Not really. It may help, but it's unclear how fast this whole registry muck-up is, it really depends on your usage of the device. I'd say once a month would be more than adequite for even a heavy user. Unless you notice your device is getting slower and slower, then give it a shot.
Or in short: who knows

That probably means that at 80% it got to a registry key it was not able to manipulate and aborted the operation (note that 99% of the time it will abort in such a case before it 'damages' your setup). Not to worry though, at 80%, you've had pretty much all the registry keys who 'fragment' a lot and cause the slowdowns.
I'll add some code in the next version that just skips the relevant key or gives you an actual error message or whatever

I don't see any change for the moment, but thks you for your job

thanks for this, trialing it out and will report soon, done it and it seems to have improved, any improvement is good improvement for a device this old, until I get my touch 3G!
Cheers!!
Edit it seems to be good for the hermes, the only downside if it is a downside is that it removed my wallpaper, which I can re set by going to the today screen config anyway. But everything seems swell. SPB mobile shell 2.1 crashes less with this, normally it would crash for me once in a day after heavy use. Hasn't yet touch wood.
So ... all in all, I think follow the instructions good for the hermes.

Thanks, i install and run it on my POlaris with the RTM from M-amine.
See any change for the moment, i just lost my register manila weather city and my manila favorite contact after rebooting.
(that's not important i'll add them again)

I have just installed and run on my TP. No problem
Thanks.

Anyone here who stick with WM2005?

Anyone here who stick and use WM2005 and no any plan of reverting it back to 2003se? i need your opinion why do you want stick with 2005 instead of se.
Becouse some of you dont have problems running 2005 some have and i have.
Well its my first ever post on here tho ive bben lurking for a year or so.ive done all the upgrades over the last year for the XDAII and i got to say the recent WM2005 O2 version found on here is perfect.
however like all new os'S there is alway going to be something that wont work correct.but this version of WM2005 is very good, for the first time ive got MSN,OUTLOOK EMAIL,O2 EMAIL,SMS,MMS all fully working without any glitches through my mobile phone isp O2-UK.
I had patiently waited for someone to crack the RAM problem and now they have id say go for it.
one tip put the HimaClearJumpCode file from a previous rom in the same directory b4 upgrading it saves having to configure it to in bootloader screen.basically just click your mouse and following the onscreen instructions!.

I am currently using Wm2003se2.2.0.7WWE I think it is, but since it was translated from Chinese, there are a few bits that don't look right, but other than that, it's fast, supports handsfree, and is the most stable 2003se ROM I have tried out of about 3 so far.
I am very tempted to try 2005, I even downloaded it yesterday in case I feel adventurous later.
I have AS4 running on my PC already, and although avantgo doesn't work, it seems much faster.
But since you are so happy with it on a UK network, I may well give it a try later on today after some meetings are out of the way, and I have some time to kill.
I installed WM5.0 a week ago and I already know that I won't be looking back to old OSes.
It's simply the best ever (I've been using Pocket PC since 2000) so I know what I'm talking about.
I can live with the few incompatibility problems I have encountered because I know they will be fixed soon by the talented people of XDA-Developers.com. They always do.
At first I installed WM5.0 to "test it" and to see what was all the "Buzz" about... (got that? hehehe)
But since that day, I noticed how quickly Buzz, Toe, JoJo and the gang fixes the "problems" so I more o less feel complete.
The overall performance of the PDA and the Phone is impresive!
The only thing I miss from previous versions is the Video Capture quality. This one simply sucks, but I'm confident that the gang will fix this soon!
P.S.- Again, I would like to thank Buzz, Toe, JoJo, mamiach and the rest of talented people for this marvelous release!
Best regards,
Rayan
OK, so far, I love it, but there are a couple of things that are proving to be a pain for me.
1) I can't install TomTom 3, need to find some GPS software that will work by the end of this week if I am going to keep 2005 on this device.
2) I don't know if my Socket BT GPS works because I have no GPS software to test it with.
Anyone got any suggestions for UK GOS software that works?
I'm sticking with WM2005
Since I installed it I have noticed the following benifits:
Performance is noticeably improved over any 2003/2003se roms I've run.
The anoying tendency to have both the BlueTooth Headset and the built-in speaker/microphone live during a call has been resolved.
My Frogpad BT keyboard is also natively supported. Overall a great experience!
The only problem I have encountered is the tendency of the MSN messenger piece to behave oddly. It'll sign on, get presence information for people, then when I try to start a conversation it will give me the conversation screen then take about 60 seconds while it claims it is 'connecting' In addition on occasion it will come back and state that a IM could not be delivered, but if I copy and paste it back in it works. It also has decided to put my e-mail attachments on the NAND partition rather than the SD partition.
I brought these issues up with my Microsoft TAM yesterday and he laughed.... Perhaps I should not have phrased it as 'Do you think it would be OK for me to open a ticket for my non-release beta copy of WM2005 that I got over the internet?'

OK, I love this, and I would really like to keep it, but, my Stowaway XT keyboard doesn't want to work either. I know it's only a driver issue, but it's still an issue for me.
I haven't even tried the VGA backpack yet :/
after all the xda is working for my every-day needs i will stay with buzzmobile 2005
I have used the wm2005, but the big thing that bothers me is that xbackup and spb pocketplus doesn't work. (battery indicator bar at the top, I love it! I first though it was some kind of bug, but now I never want any other battery level indicator.
For tomtom3 i'm using tomtom 4.40 now (works also with wm2005).
But there is nothing more worse then a sudden hard reset, and you can't restore any contacts because xbackup doesnt work.
Also I tried almost all of the roms here, and in my opinion the diamondrom 1.2 is the best complete and stable rom around here.
As long as xbackup isnt fixed on wm2005 i can't use it. Don't want to install all kinds of backup and restore programs. After a hard reset start xbackup and make a call.

What are you talking about?
Isn't persistant memory one of Windows Mobile 5.0 main features?
I have performed a couple of Hard Resets on purpose just to see if the whole system survives and let me tell you that it works flawlessly.
I can live without Sprite Backup for the time being!!!....
I successfully upgraded to WM2005 but am unable to get the hardreset to work (the key sequence I am using is power button + record button + camera button + soft reset hole, all at the same time). I have verified that each of these buttons works individually. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?
Also, when my xda is off, there is sometimes a pattern of faint black vertical lines on the screen which disappear when its turned on. I hadn't seen them before I upgraded to 2005.
Any help would be appreciated!
re WM2005
I found the hard reset combination quite tricky to do, took me a few tries to do it. Just hold the camera and record buttons very firmly, press the the power button and also stick the stylus in the reset hole. Keep holding the buttons for 3 seconds after you've felt the stylus nudge the reset button.
I'm using WM2005 and have found ActiveSync using GPRS to be a little less reliable than before. I have had to soft-reset 2x in the last 24hours to get GPRS working. It simply fails to connect when requested and says cannot find www.vodafone.net.nz (the APN for Vodafone NZ). When I reset it works beautifully.
Also it seems to me to be slightly slower than 2003SE. I don't know if it's the extra animations making it *appear* slower but it does feel less reponsive. Particularly opening messages and moving them. I was using 2003SE 2.06 and then 2.20-translated prior.
However, the extra ease of use that 2005 gives makes up for this by being more productive with the time I do spend on the device.
SPB Pocket Plus definitely does not work as I'd like it to and I miss the battery meter on the top bar, plus the multiple IE windows. The IE browser is much better on 2005 though and is quicker overall.
It works great with my Bluetrek G2 headset, no change in audio quality over 2003SE.
The Pocket MSN integration with Hotmail, MSN etc is amazing and very well done. If you use Hotmail and/or MSN Messenger a lot you'll love 2005.
I'm just doing some testing to see if Intellipad is losing my predictive text words. It seems like every time I soft-reset the words I manually added disappear
Intellidialer is a big loss too which I really miss. Can't wait for the 2005 port.
All in all, a good OS and major improvements, but yep a little buggy still. I'd recommend it if you don't mind soft resetting often and living with a few quirks, for the sake of improved useability and a better (in most places) interface.
My record + camera buttons don't work either in 2005 btw.
re WM2005
Forgot to mention -- RemotelyAnywhere doesn't work with Remote control either.
The ActiveX control that is designed for PocketPCs only works on PPC2002 or 2003, not 2005.
If you need to remotely control a PC or server then you will be stuck.

Been using Buz-an-Co mobile 2005 for a while now, absolutely no intention of removing at all. Fair enough somethings dont work, but on the whole, its more stable, i find it faster, BT works the way its ment to, and it looks just so cool! i sync my contacts in outlook and store all my data on the Rom OR SD-Card so i'll never actualy lose anything of importance..... AND and by far the most important reason......I can give me mates with the XDA IIi the two fingers! ahh u may have wifi but u cant get 2005 working!! )
My only serious gripe is MSN messanger not working (fixed by using Agile messanger) and Tomtom 3's total refusal to install. (on that note i was able to start the install process and just before it crashes find the cab files in a temp directory and install them manually, it installed but when you run it, it comes up with "voice files not installed, blar blar" then the program runs for a second before crashing to desktop.)

Agile messenger works a treat on WM2005, and you can connect to MSN, AOL, ICQ etc...
Apparently WM2005 is smartphone compatible, so you could try TomTom mobile, I've heard it works, but the touch-screen doesn't (as it's built for phones). Haven't tried it myself though.
I will also not go back to 2003SE.
I'm using the full version since Saturday and I have no issues at all. All my buttons work. OK, once in a while the XDA freezes and I need a softreset, but that's more likely from the applications I installed which are maybe not 100% Magneto compatible. Also, I'm still trying to get the USB syncing to work. So far I sync via bluetooth.
I love that Contacts syncs the picture from Outlook on the PC. Much better than all the picture-caller ID software.
But really best of all: I don't have to be scared of hardresets anymore and I can use the XDAII until the battery is down.
I was thinking about buying the Mini or maybe the XDA IV when it comes out later this year. But I have decided to continue using my XDAII since it is just great with Magneto.
Cheers
Pat
I am interested to see why people think that they don't have to be scared of hard resets?
The Himalaya does *not* support persistant storage, unless you choose to save something to the flash rom, or SD card, you *will* lose it after a hard reset.
The OS does not give you the safety of the new features, that's still a hardware issue, so don't think you have persistant storage because the OS supports it.
WM2005
Hi,
I have installed WM2005 and fall back to WM2003SE twice.
1st: the chinese software CEstar cause the touch screen to hang (no respond) when I install it. Reinstall the WM2005 still face the same problem, so 1st fall back to WM2003SE.
2nd: After installing the WM2005, my Spectec SDIO wifi don't seem to be able to have the transmitter on. Able to see network available but cannot connect. Tried reinstall the driver but no result. Waiting for Spectec to reply regards to the driver. So 2nd fall back to WM2003SE.
Ric
but it does support a form of persistant storage as in permenent save / storage on the old roms
not really enough though.......
and if the persistant storage of newer devices save the data in flash then could it not be troublesome in the long run since flash have a limited times you can write on it before it goes belly up
much like a cd-rw or dvd-rw disc

Ultra Vanilla for SPL 1.2 and SPL 3.5

Please make sure that your device is cid and sim unlocked before installing the rom - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...80#post1354180 Also put your device into bootloader manually by pressing the camera button and softreset at the same time
Ok first I just want to say thanks to eaglesteve for helping me test new BT stacks however, I was unable to get a bt stack that would do file transfer to and from phone or laptop and still have it work for bt headsets. I should point out that the bt stack that is in there does work just not for everything some of the files are from the diamond and some are from ap4 and I personally have tested using BT headphones, BT mouse and BT keyboard all at the same time and it works pretty well. I also want to thank ervius for helping me with xip porting and to cmonex for helping with anything I needed help with and thanks to Anunnaki for the animated startup and anyone else I forgot about
I added new splash screens that are in line with the startup theme from my last rom, hope u guys like as I did it myself
Ultra Vanilla: build 19521.1.1.0
added total commander over file explorer
removed stuff from cpl reg
added custsk to config.txt
fixed welcomehead startup
switched band to auto
changed quickgps reg settings to 7 days
changed default phone skin
enabled autotimezone
added tcpmp and all plugins in place of wmp
added easy config for wimp with hardrest option (will be explained in download folder)
Of course this is a uc compliant rom if you are unfamiliar with this then click on the link to find out how to make a sdconfig.txt file so all your apps are loaded automatically http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366337
I have removed about 22mb of stuff but I kept all the reg settings and intflashfiles.dat settings also. So if you want to add any of that stuff back into the rom just copy it to your device and it should work.
There are no screen shots as this is Ultra Vanilla so there is not much to show off

do you know about registry editor from total commander? Looks is not included
looks the button assignation for networks is lost (right side, over power button)and commmgr.exe is not present
Irus,
I just installed it and have the following questions/concerns:
1. I can't find comm manager so I can't turn on wifi.
2. My previous taxis/irus rom did not have any keyboards installed and I liked that about ultra-lite.
3. no real vga to alter dpi (can I install this separately?).

Ok.
Could you (or someone) point me to a comm manager and the realvga software to download.

GPS is good this time. Cold fix took 1 minutes and 44 seconds outdoor under clear blue sky. The same spot that I stood when I tested the Chinese ROM, which incidentally took more than 6 minutes. But Sprite Terminator still does not work. I think it does not work in WM6.1 period. With Wm6.0 it works.
Noticed an error when trying to navigate to bluetooth folder.
Also, it is strange that a number of my application acquired a generic icon for the application rather than the proper icon. Does anyone else have this problem? Edit: icon appeared after a soft reset.
Still installing application, but it feels fast. I think you have a winner here.

to be honest i noticed better gps fix but i thought it might be tomtom7 as i got a cold fix in under 5 min from in my house and did not use quickgps. so glad to here its not just me. also i know about BT problem i was trying to get the ms stack and the other stack that you tried that worked on file transfers, to coexist but no luck. glad you like it
Truly admire your passion, will only possible to test your latest on week-end.
irus,
I thought you had WIMP cooked in, but can't seem to find it.
Your spalsh screen is nice. The only thing I'm uncomfortable is the fact that you advertise to the potential thief how to do hard and soft reset. I'd rather that info be extremely difficult for the thief to obtain.
Cheers.
I wonder if it is just me. I noticed that occasionally the device seems to refuse to reflesh /update the screen, showing completely wrong info and image. For example, the icon of application often does not get instantly updated after an installation. When I was using my eWallet, when I click on the Field tab, it is not showing the screen for that but from whatever was left behind just before this. Some strange behaviour.
There is something strange with some drivers i think.. TT6 (i've installed the common application for anu LITE rom) screen refresh is very slow, changing menus I see a "fading" slow effect and a sloooow refresh rate. (you used net cf 3.5 right?)
Other suggestion
1)I will suggest to remove customer experience
2) Default sounds aren't working
3) too many SIP, they waste resources and memory

I think so too. The refreshing of screen is not functioning normally.
Anyone having problem setting up email accounts and connecting to them? I took several attempts before I managed to set up email account. It did not see the service provider I had set up before. My service provider was strangely not on the pull down list when I tried setting it up manually. Later, after it was set up, attempt to download mail results in something to the effect of invalid settings for connection.

Rom Update ???

Well I finally have my new device and it looks like i might have a little time this weekend to make an update and fix some minor bugs in my rom. please post suggestions here. All suggestions need to be in my friday midnight EST. thanks
How about making these changes to your last ROM?
- 16mb page pool to see if it goes a little faster.
- Do not auto download the quick gps data during the setting phase, since the device does not have time and data connection yet at that phase.
- update the large menu text cab so that it works. I had to look for the cab elsewhere last time.'
- Focus on speed.
- Keep it ultra vanilla. This is your number one selling point for me. I don't want all third party application to be chosen by myself and not seeing duplicated application/old versions/unused application.
- Make sure it is spl1.2. Do not want to lose memory for useless applications.
- If you intent to use newer built (Are you thinking of Touch Pro?), make sure it still supports Gsen application, and has random access for contact application. I personally love these two features.
- Make sure it has no htc touchflo or Ftouchflo. Have Ftouchflosl trial version if you wish. Else leave it for user to decide.
- Again, leaveb out realVGA. Some of us don't use it anymore.
- Continue to leave out HTC Home, and have just one theme. HTC Home They are all add ons.
- An important bug to fix is its inabikity to delete POP3 mails. Currently I can only delete non-POP3 mail, but for my pop3 mail, I'm forced to sign into the web-mail to delete them to prevent mail-box overflow. This is a pain.
Frankly, I'm still so happy with your last ROM, although I feel the speed could be further improved. So if there is only one change, let there be just speed improvement.
Thanks irus. I look forward to your fantastic ROM.
I'm now using Michy's rom whose main merits are speed and stability, but I like your Gsen function very much. I hope you can integrate the above-mentioned features in your new rom.
I would suggest no changing from your latest rom which I think is perfect, only bugfixes.
Changing could be for a newer release while I think your last one deserves just a trimming to be a reference rom. (I can't download full messages from the mail program???)
I would say fix the known bugs, increase speed if possible. After releasing that version, you can spend sometime looking at other possibilities (lite version, other builds or base, new features, etc...).
The lite / vanilla builds never actually worked in the long run for me because it always seemed something was missing which caused other applications not to work properly. They always seemed fast and potentially stable for a few weeks. After installing my apps and heavy usage, it always seemed to have gone down hill. Nonetheless, a lot PPL here love them.
It is also very important that auto rotate, gsen, and other features continue to work because I believe a lot of PPL stuck with this base because that stuff work well with on this ROM.
I never tried your rom mainly because I had the impression it was missing MMS. I know it is fairly easy to install myself, but I hadn't time to look for a proper version.
If your rom contains MMS, then forget about this post
Yes! also mms. I would consider the missing of it nearly a bug to be fixed as it is a standard feature of the athena missing... It is true that most of us don't use mms, but just in case...
ok these are all good suggestions, i will keep them in mind
I currently use your FULL ROM/3.5 and find it to be excellent. I hope you will NOT include any real VGA additions. Every one of them I have tried so far causes display problems with my "must use" apps.
Thanks for all your hard work.
I've tested All Athena ROM available.
I am using now the Sogarth base, isn't the fastest, isn't the most complete, but it is stable, has gsensor, big htc home, audio player doesn't stop working in suspend mode, index bar in contacts, battery life is great WITH BT enabled and some diamond enhancements.
The probem is ... it has to be tweaked
.net35 AND net2.0 to have compatibility with older and newest applications (modaco netcf config), some registry tweaks to improve the speed , michy's sound enhancement are much better, athena sensor service has to be stopped, IMHO are needed:
1) a newest remote desktop,
2) wifirouter (ori ICS control) ,
3) schaps advanced config ,
4) moblue,
5) total commander,
6) irus fsplayer,
7) pocketrar,
8) omnia d3d drivers,
9) Gsen,
10) wkTask (HTC Xbutton removed),
11) cyberon voice dial
12) I need mms too
I don't need realvga, the applications I like could use VGA resolution without realvga! Last, but not least, having and athena ROM CLOSER to diamond ROM should be easy to have compatibility with diamond and raphael applications (the most "developed" HTC model)
I strongly suggest a newest Sogarth, not "Extreme" but improved one (SPL 3.5). and "Extreme Sogarth" lite SPL 1.2 and 3.5 tweaked for maximum speed

I have forgotten if you use the extrom.
If you don't , could you ask michyprima for his ap to access this .
It is called "Addins"
there's a new base rom popped up in the general forum..
Scratch that I can't find it now..

I think that app is good but only if you have the loop problem as all my roms are uc compliant, which is the same thing just launches from the sd card not ext rom.
my 2cents: irus in your knew rom maybe you can focus on a new build and speed speed speed.

I haven't used the uc app.
does it allow you to choose what you install , or does it install everything in the list?

it installs everything in the sdconfig.txt file but if you don't want something just delete that line of text. when i release my next version i will put a template of sdconfig.txt but this will only work for people without the loop problem.
Suggessions
Hi Irus,
What about the following:
1- Fnger touch
2- More diamnod drivers, graphics & functions like in ap5
3- check this link and sea if we can avail such functions http://www.touchxperience.com/

Requests for Michy's next ROM graphics

====
EDIT: As Michy has asked for graphics requests, he apparently already has something in mind for his 5.2 / 6.0. Yea! So be sure to post with any requests as to what you want the next ROM to look like.
====
You have to hand it to Michy. 4.1 and 5.1 are both fast, smooth, and (almost completely) trouble-free ROMs with tons of useful programs. And for both SPLs!
To tell the truth, until I flashed 4.1, I had regretted HardSPLing my device. Most of the ROMs I tried up until then were troublesome and just as slow as my stock WM6.0.
So in a way, this post is thanks to Michy. Gran bel lavoro Michy!
In another way, it is a request for something new. I know I am not the only one on this forum that gets nervous if he hasn't flashed a new ROM this month... I'm feeling the itch! I need my fix!
Anyway, thought it might be interesting to see what kind of ROM people wanted. Give your vote and comments please.
hi,
please just add your graphic-style request, so i can have an idea for a 5.2/6.0.
bye
Michael,
Good to see you are considering a new rom. In truth your 5.1 seems flawless and it's hard to imagine how much better you can make it. Thanks for your great work.
One suggestion I would give to make your next ROM easier to understand is: if you are going to include lots of apps like you usually do, it might be a good idea to put them in folders in the start menu according to their usage.
A Multimedia folder could contain YouTube Player, TCPMP, MP3Trimmer, Camera, Audio Manager, and Album links.
VoipCall, Slick, Messenger, Fring, Flash SMS, Call Firewall and others could be grouped in a Communications folder.
And some things like FTouchFlo, GSen CFG, GSen, GSenToggle, IContactConfig, PDM, PocketScreen, PIM Backup, PsShutXP, QuickGPS, RegEditor, SIM Manager, SynchroTime etc, etc, could easily be put in the Tools folder you usually include.
By doing this, you allow the person using the ROM to have easier access to the programs that they install. Because people are more likely to frequently use the programs that they install, rather than ones that come pre-installed.
Another suggestion is about the applications you include with your ROMs. I think I understand your logic in including lots of apps: the space is there in the ROM, so you might as well use it as long as the apps don't degrade performance. That's strong logic, and I agree with it. My suggestion is to only include apps that have reached a developmental dead-end; i.e. apps that are stable, and are no longer currently being developed. For example TCPMP, VNCViewer, and DotFred's Task Manager aren't updated very frequently - they make perfect additions to your ROM. Other apps, like YouTube, Manila 2D/3D, S2U2, ThrottleLauncher etc, are still in active development and can/should be updated from time to time. It is possible to update and install over the apps in the ROM, but then you have just wasted that space in the ROM.
As far as graphics are concerned, I am of two minds.
1) I have always really liked the touch/kaiser grey-on-white-with-blue-highlights. Very professional.
2) However, recently I have flashed my Hermes with PDACorner's Pro V.25 and I really appreciate the usefulness of the colors he uses in his status bar. Colors like that would really be useful against the flat black bars of the DiamondVGA.tsk you always include... They take a little getting used to, but make it really easy to know what is going on with your phone with simply a glance.
And this is a light and robust little Comm Manager that looks great with the skin in post eight.
And as always, thanks for your consideration. I wish I had the time, patience and talent to build such ROMs.
Not much more to add from my side, thanks larsuck!
- Make it as fast as possible without losing 5.1 stability
- Ahm...make both startup gifs like the ones from AP4.0, just with your name (I know, plagiate, but it looks great)
- Real-VGA, all programs/thumbnails should work and look according to chosen dpi, especially with 128dpi (seems to be the best choice)
- Remove time&date permanently from taskbar, so that all buttons can be seen and clicked without problems
- In short: please make it look like the original x7510 screen
Program wishes: maybe some program for real contacts import/export with edit-function on PC, I'm currently using xmlcontactsbackup but perhaps there are better choices.
Many thanks
just to renew my ROMs, i'm going to make a 5.1 Last Build Edition, with the last build i found on xda (20921). If this build will work well.......you'll have a new rom to falsh
There we go again weare just a bunch of rom addicts, lol, so far I been playing wit 5.1 is nice and respond qick only problems found so far is the bluetooth stack, (if the new build has something as AP4 Ill be in heaven) and Slic if I try to use it will give a BSD with a message saying fatal system exception or something, that was funny because it was the first time I have seen a BSD in WM, no a biggie for my I just do not use the app .
The programs included are useful but I rather get rid of duplicates e.g if you think icontact is better than stock contact manager get rid of the stock one( Im not complaining on that ,you have done a good job there so far).
the graphics just keep them consistent across the rom e.g not a black today a green communications and a white phone screen.
And if touchflow 3D was included working reliably that would be a plus.
Larsuck mention below to add mature apps only to the rom, I do not agree, why, because we will flash to newer roms during the development of the app so if a rom has the latest opera and a newer one appear we will have a newer rom sooner with the newer opera or whatever anyway, and because when a app reach its end of development time usually means that there are newer apps better and so its no point to keep developing the oldest ones ( not always the case) so as long the apps in the rom are solid stable just include what you think is useful.
Great job Michi and many thanks
I ask for two things...but only one is possible me thinks.
If you could get hootgaming working on your next rom, now that would be something. Something tells me it won't be possible as getting hold of the client .cab for winmob seems rather difficult.
Back in reality...I tend to use Claunch on my today screen as it works well but the only buttons that are any good tend to be based on the Iphone. Any app like this with an original button interface would be fantastic.
Keep up the good work.

NEON 400 Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM

For NEON 400 users only!
Please do not even consider flashing this rom unless your device is a NEON 400. That's the Canadian Telus/Bell version of the HTC Touch Dual. If you don't know how to find out the model number... then I suggest you do some more reading before you consider flashing any roms.
Hey All,
My old phone died so I recently became the proud owner of the HTC Touch Dual NEON 400. Long story short I unlocked it (Thanks to jockyw2001) and found that there are no Chefs out there with this device. There's a couple dedicated dudes out there trying to help all of us NEON 400 users (Talking about you Rataplan, deepankerjha), but since they don't actually have this device it's pretty tough for them to prepare and test a rom for us.
So, I took the plunge. With Rataplan's help (thanks a lot buddy, couldn't have gotten this far without you're help) I've been cooking away and have a solid WM 6.5 ROM here for us. It's based on the Telus stock ROM and WM 6.5 build 21914. I haven't yet cleared all the extra's (so it's a bit fat) but in my testing so far it's 100% functional and bug free (well, as bug free as WM can be )
I can't guarantee how well it'll work on the Bell NEON 400's, but if you have a Telus device, this should do the trick. I'm using it right now on mine.
Please leave feedback if you try this ROM out. I am still a novice chef, but I'll take feedback to heart, and I'll continue cooking and optimizing roms for the NEON 400 as I learn more and get better.
Happy Flashing!
I'll post updates as they come.
UPDATE:
Sorry all, but in my quest to migrate to the Android OS I've ditched my Neon in favour of the Vogue. I'll upload the Lite ROM I was working on for those who want it. The only thing I was having trouble with was the GPS, apart from that the ROM runs very nicely with the extra weight of the cube and other fat removed. Feel free to PM me if you have questions, I'll do my best to help if I can.
Give me a few days to do a fresh build of the Lite ROM and to take one more stab at getting the GPS working.
Okay my final roms are up. Hopefully Rataplan will have the links posted below shortly.
Lite Version: 1.01 - 1.03
-WM 6.5 Build 21914
-TouchFlo Cube removed
-A bunch of other bundled HTC/Telus packages removed
-GPS is still flaky
Version: 2.01
-WM 6.5 Build 21914
-Nothing removed, All stock HTC and Telus packages remain
EDIT I can't post links just yet, so Rataplan's going to help me out with that, check his post below for the download links.
Here are the links:
NEON400_201 Added 19th August
NEON400_Lite_101 Added 9th November
NEON400_Lite_102 Added 9th November
NEON400_Lite_103 Added 9th November
Loaded on my Bell NEON400. Took a while to get to setup and made a few bleeps along the way, now it's at the "Customization" part. Will update as I finish setup and test it out.
EDIT: Finished installation, looks pretty good, will test calling and texting as we go. Any chance we can strip the Telus crap out of it though? Hate seeing "Telus" everywhere when it's not even a Telus phone.
EDIT 2: Trying to set up ActiveSync to sync with my Google Account - it freezes every so often for a short while and won't respond to taps or key presses. Seems to be common in all applications. Also, the keys operate but the backlight never turns on for them (disregard that - they do work, see Edit 4).
EDIT 3: Hitting the X to close a window doesn't kill the app like it did in WM 6.1. Not sure if this normal behaviour or not (first time flasher).
EDIT 4: After a reboot the key backlight is working again. When I try changing the keyboard however to a full QWERTY layout the setting never saves and always reverts to the "touch keypad" or whatever it is (same problem in WM 6.1 so it's a setting issue not a ROM issue - disregard please).
If you could get rid of the Telus branding everywhere and see what's up with the freezing this ROM would be perfect!
Nice job.
got_milk, Thanks for testing on your Bell device. Like I said in the post I wasn't sure what to expect on a Bell phone. I'm working on a lite version right now with the Telus stuff stripped out. I'm also trying to remove the added weight from HTC like the touchflo cube (I really hate that thing...)
I've noticed the problem with the X button not closing apps. It seems in WM 6.5 it just sort of minimizes them. Although if I recall there's a setting somewhere that lets you set it so you can close an app by holding the X instead of just tapping it. I'll look into that some more.
In regards to the responsiveness one thing I've noticed is that when memory is low I sometimes have to tap and hold the buttons for a moment before they register. I initially thought it just wasn't reading the hits but found by accident that I could make it work by holding it for an extra moment. Hopefully this won't be a problem once I get my Lite version working.
I highly recommend downloading and installing Finger Keyboard. It's my favourite by far. I can't post links yet, but the thread where I found it is titled:
\\\\\\\\\ F i n g e r K e y b o a r d 2 ///////// v2.1 - NOW ONLINE - all resolutions
One other thought: If you could hook me up with the ROM you're using as the stock Bell ROM I could recreate this 6.5 ROM using it as the base. This might solve some of your problems too.
Thanks again for testing!
Not a problem, thank you more for doing this! I really hate how we're limited to WinMo 6.1, when we clearly have a 6.5 capable device.
I'm using the stock Bell ROM from jockyw2001's HardSPL post (stickied at the top of this forum).
Looking forward to the lite edition, I will certainly test it when you release it.
So, I couldn't stay away (Software Engineering student...lol). I set up my own kitchen and started to cook using a stock Bell ROM. I've managed to strip all the Bell crap + the HTC cube and make a nice clean ROM.
However!
I've encountered one bug so far. On the home screen, where "Text" should be, it's simply blank and clicking it gets me to the main Outlook menu (where I choose Text Messages or Outlook E-mail). I can also not create text messages or reply to them. I know we've hit this roadblock before but no one's said how they got around it.
I also don't have data working at all - it's not being configured automatically (I think the Bell customization wizard does this, but it's disabled).
EDIT: Okay, it's as I suspected. There's a connection.xml file that's part of the Bell scripts that is added to handle data access. Anyone know how I can add data as part of the ROM package?
For sms take a look at this post from 88fingerslukee,

That registry edit is just enabling/disabling threaded SMS...in my case SMS doesn't work at all (I can receive and view SMS') but I can't create any new ones or reply to them.

Yes, it's essential anyway so I get prompted if it's not included. It's not part of WM build 21914 however...
So I've tried with a bunch of different WM builds, new kitchen setups, and everything I can think of under the sun.
Data works out of the box - it's just not enabled by default. If you go into the comm manager and enable data it seems to work.
SMS is still broken. When it's not highlighted right above the text 'Text' it displays 'No notif...'. Highlighting 'Text' gives you absolutely no text at all and your option for that is 'View', which takes you to your call list.
I've cooked all day and yet I cannot get this to work at all. I'm rolling back to WM 6.1 until I can find a solution.

got_milk, way to go bud! Glad to have another new chef in the kitchen. I wont bother cooking a Bell ROM as you're already on track. My Lite ROM is gonna be a while anyway. Between wife, kids, job, and house... I just don't have a whole lot of time to tinker.
In regards to your SMS problem, I might be able to help. I too had problems getting SMS to work when I started working on my Lite ROM. After some trial and error what I found fixed it was to include two files from the OEMAPPS pkg.
Strip out all the crap from OEMAPPS you don't want and make sure that these two files remain, then include the package in your next build:
234f3319-55a2-46a3-be32-24530a643a0f.dsm
234f3319-55a2-46a3-be32-24530a643a0f.rgu
I'll be honest, I didn't do any research on the significance of these files, I just happened upon it by chance.
Good Luck!
Aha! I shall do another cook tonight and see if that does the trick.
EDIT: You sir, are a brilliant genius. I didn't have the .rgu version but the .dsm was there. Deleted everything out of OEMAPPS but that, cooked and flashed, and texting works now.
Thanks a ton!
Excellent! Glad I could help
So, my two bugs I've noticed so far...
No data. EV-DO is available, looks like it has to be set up manually. Anyone know how we can incorporate this into the cooking? I've tried ADC but it doesn't work, says it's not a valid Pocket PC application every time the phone boots up.
Also, the buttons along the top (sound, data, etc) work normally in the home screen, but enter any app and while the icons remain the same their functions have now been shifted one to the left. (Volume becomes Close, Data becomes Volume, etc).
When I first started a Lite ROM I stripped my Operator EXT packages. That killed my data. I put'em back to work on the OEM pkg's. I haven't had time to dissect the EXT packages yet to find the pieces we need for data. Whichever one of us figures that out first will have to share it with the other
For now I'm still picking through the OEM packages finding all the pieces I want/need to keep.
Not sure about your taskbar buttons, might be related to that handy tasks dropdown item that's usually on the far right (like a quickview task manager you can use to close running apps) I don't know if that's a WM feature, or something HTC bundled in.
That's an HTC bundled application (TaskManager.exe in OEMApps). I removed it and the bug's still there. You don't have this problem?
Data is handled via Connection.xml which is injected - somehow - during the "Customization" process. You CAN do it yourself manually - simply add a new connection and have it dial #777.
There's not much in the EXT packages - and what's there is impossible to tell for now, I'll dissect more and see what's there.
Strange, when I hit any of the buttons along that top taskbar it just opens up a bubble with icons for each of the options available, and then select an item from the bubble. Individually the icons along the top don't actually do anything for me, they all just open this bubble.
Right, which is the normal behaviour - it's when you actually select an icon from that bubble that everything appears to have shifted one position to the left.
Try it at the home screen and then in an application.
Also, looks like data is handled via "Connection.xml" which is placed inside the Windows folder (I'm back to stock 6.1 to check file locations). If I try to put that inside OEMApps or whatever and have that copy over though it doesn't end up in the Windows folder as far as I can tell.
I'm also trying to strip out the more unnecessary stuff, however, the camera always breaks and says the app is missing files to run. I can get rid of the cube, and everything else, but I'd like to leave the camera function behind (strips 30MB off the ROM if I clean everything else out). But the camera doesn't work.
