I have a vzw xv6800 wm6.1
DCD rom 3.2.6
running google maps 2.2.0.16
i have done GC's aGPs mod as well...
every time i open google maps, i have to select "Use GPS" under the menu in google maps in order to turn on the gps functionality. once i do that it works great, its just an annoying extra step..
is there any way i can modify a registry setting or something so that it will use the gps automatically, rather than having to select that option every time i open up google maps?
thanks!

This question has been asked many times. The short sweet answer is no. You can however write a mort script to do it. SEARCH for that and you will find your answer. I was just reading about it less than two weeks ago.
Good Luck!
I agree with scrosler. It would be very easy to do in Mortscript. If you haven't done it yourself or come up with a solution when I have more time later, I might be able to write the script just for fun.

So currently I'm using google maps for my navigation, however I hate its long time searching. It takes almost 10 min for it to find me but once I'm found it stays on while it runs. However I would like to know if there is something better than this?
gps
I think google is one of the best, they are on top of there game, imo. Hopefully you find something else that suites your phone.
Google...Sprint Nav...
Google maps is great... I have to say (my opinion though) that the new version of Sprint GPS is pretty good too. (but u have to have sprint).
I say both are very average compare to other software: Iguidance, Garmin XT, Tomtom, IGO.....paid but much better, 10 minutes isn't normal Eclipse, you may wanna eclipse Google and try something new...plenty or resources out there
If you just want to know where you are and want to find businesses close to where you are at then google is nice.
If you want to use your GPS for driving directions get a true turn-by-turn app like igo, tomtom, Garmin, CoPilot, etc.. Not to mention you don't need a data play for these apps. Maps are loaded on the phone.
I've got garmin XT and I love it.
I agree with above.. sure the google one is cool for what it does.. so is the new one in Bing for that matter... but really, nothing beats TomTom... it will work even if you have no internet connection...... (assuming you have a map of your entire country on an SD card).... But the voices are cool, the diffrent options for a car icon is cool.... the layout is cool... and the "show off" effect is cool...
"Oh, your phone has AT&T Navigator that only works where you have coverage?, Well, my phone has real TomTom, just like the ones you buy at Best Buy for $200, and it works everywhere"..
lol... sorry, but it is fun... And if you you do have an unlimited data plan, and are willing to pay hte monthly fee, you can access TomTom Plus which offers live traffic (and it can auto-reroute you if it is faster another way), along with gas prices, weather, etc....
That is my 2 cents...
The reason why I hate google maps is because it takes a long long time for it to locate me... takes a good 5-10 mins till it finds me. I want to know what app or what I need to do so that I can use a gps that will pick me fast. What do I do ?
does tomtom locate fast? and is it free?
I have started using Waze with my TP. I love it. Its user based so if there is someone stuck in traffic, they report it and you get updated. Im a huge fan.
tom tom locates very fast but is not free. my google maps takes a few seconds to locate me. i would try changing your radio. also use quick gps it makes google locate faster.
Garmin XT
Run it on my Fuze and it works great! It's not free but I was part of www.lg-incite.com forum before getting my Fuze and they have a thread over there dedicated to Garmin GPS. If you have a data plan, you get live traffic and can search a business in your area using the built in Google Search.
Quick GPS
Hey Eclipse I would reccommend trying quick GPS, it updates satellite info from the internet so beware but attains a much faster lock on once it has run the update, it DOES use the internet so unlimited data is reccommended.

This is not an application issue. This is a phone GPS issue. You will have this same issue with every GPS application until you resolve the GPS acquisition issue.
I have an issue with the GPS device every few months. Some bad data corrupts the memory location and won't find satellites. To fix it I change some settings and it seems to force overwrite the nonvolatile memory files.
1. Open Quick GPS
2. Tap Menu at the bottom
3. Tap Options
4. Uncheck "Auto download when connected to PC via ActiveSync"
5. Tap OK
6. Close out of Quick GPS and quit the application
Now it may take 30 seconds to acquire satellites for the first time. Each time after you should acquire satellites very quickly.
Having trouble wording the right query on this, so if it's been answered I apologize...it's also not really Eris specific, but you all seem to know your stuff so I'm posting here.
Anyone know if using GPS counts as "billable" data usage?
I ask because I'm driving to Canada next week and would like to make use of Google's Nav (for at least a bit of the trip). I realize Maps likely needs internet connectivity to function correctly, so may plan consists of:
Being connected to the web (either Mobile Data or WiFi) here in Jersey
Searching for the hotel's address and allowing Maps to "download" the route
Leave GPS on, but turn off Mobile Data
Do this seem terribly stupid? Assuming it would work, would the "connection" to the GPS show up on my VZW bill?
maps does need the internet to work properly. the gps data does not count as data. there are several options including paid apps such as copilot that have maps stored on your phone. there is also a modified version of google maps that will download map data to the cache which should allow you to do what you were suggesting (set route and then follow). i have not used either personally. however, a thread for the modified google apps is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887&page=245 with the newest version as the last post on this page. you can read the thread to see what all it can and cant do. it started out as modified by brut then was picked up by a different developer, but using the same thread.
All I can tell you is that Nav Does work when driving through areas of No Signal. You have the blue line through a blank (white) background. I don't know if you lose the verbal cues or not. No signal areas I encounter are not in areas I need to turn, but just following a highway.
From my experience with Nav I think your plan is at least a valid experiment. If it does not work, on the way back just Get Directions and follow the written instructions.
Your GPS is on the phone. There is no charge to use it. My only caveat is if it requests Assistance data - that may cause data charges. It should only need assistance data to help acquire lock. Once you are navigating it should be fine without a data connection.
Please post how it goes.
ok since you are the second person i have recommended the app i posted the thread link to, i figured i should probably install it. you have to uninstall you current map app. the new app has two things to do. in the settings menu of the app, there is a more button. in the more button there is a sign in to account option, this will sync it with your google account (starred places and such). the other part directly applicable to you is under the more button, there is a cache settings option, if you click that, then check the prefetch on mobile box, it should prefetch all of the maps when you program your route. one piece of advice is to toggle off your network and make sure the "international roaming" option in your phone settings is turned off once you leave the country. when i went to jamaica i was greeted by a text when the plane landed. a friend wishing me happy travels cost me 50 cents...lol. that will teach me to leave international roaming turned on. the nice thing was that where we were staying had wifi so i still got my email and voicemail/texts through google voice.
Thanks to you both.

My main concern is getting charged for usage outside of the country, but it sounds like that won't happen. I'm probably going to "steal" my wife's Garmin for the trip, but will also try this experiment with the Eris just out of curiosity. Will post results when I return.

You went above and beyond on that one for me brother, much appreciated! Sounds like you've found me a solution, and a new piece of software to play with. The wife will be watching more of that horrible Jersey Shore in my absence (if I'm so much in the room my blood pressure goes up about 50 points), so double thanks to you!

Just tried out the latest version 5.2.1 and it didn't seem to voice search well. I will probably try out v5.0. i know that in brut it worked. brut stopped updating his version at v4.6 i believe.
edit: the brut options (cache maps etc) do not work in gingerbread.
program on the market called Locus allows downloading maps of a selected area also if the brut/google maps doesn't work and you are still looking for a free option.
Hello All,
I searched for any related posts and could not locate any reference to my problem. I would greatly appreciate any input.
One of my favorite features on my old EVO 4G was the voice search for navigation. I could give it very limited information and it found places, products, etc like nobody's business.
I upgraded to the EVO 4G LTE today and it came with Google Voice Search installed. First I could not even locate the app. When searching at Google Play for the app I am made aware that it is already installed. There does not appear to be an update option at this point.
Firstly I would like to find a better way to locate, paste to the home page or launch the app (once I get it to work that is). Secondly and most important when I launch the app through what is discovered on Google Play the microphone page appears but then the app locks up.
I have also tried just the Navigation app and when I speak directions it seems to take the input fine, but the results are seriously random and for the most part quite irrelevant.
I have played with the settings and the maps apps seems to have my location pegged pretty good.
Any thoughts on getting better results or instructions on removing the factory install of Google voice search or updating it?
If it makes a difference all testing has been done on WiFi from my home network.
Thanks for any input you might have.
I havent tested mine at length but my google maps speak destination function works just as well as it did on my Evo. The voice function of the search app works also, but it does take a second to be ready for voice input. As for removing the factory installs of both of those apps, you would need at least root to be able to delete them, and there is a mod for rooted users to flash to the stock rom or ViperROM that will get rid of the bottom menu bar and map the recent apps to home long press and menu to the recent apps softkey, OR it can do the same without getting rid of the menu bar. I think there is also a variant of the mod that also maps voice search to recent apps long press, but don't quote me on that. Either way, for right now it seems the only way to try and solve the problems you have is to either root it, wait it out, or return the phone and see if a new one works better.

Hi,
recently I tried out Sygic which works really nice except for one thing:
when Sygic is running in background after a while (seems randomly) the GPS message disappears (upper message in attached pic), the Sygic message remains (lower message in attached pic).
When I click the Sygic message, the app behaves as if I restarted it (says "initializing" on top right). Luckily, it remembers the old route.
Yet sometimes I don't drive myself and would like to do other stuff and have Sygic tracking in the background.
It works fine with Google maps.Yet not with Sygic. Especially when I launch any other app (even the browser, a video or something), Sygic stops tracking immediately (not always but often) or some time later.
GPS is set to never turn off in Sygic and all settings are set to "optimal".
Could that be the Android OS turning something off for Sygic as it might believe it's no longer used or something?
Sygic is more sophisticated than Google maps and uses more ram. If you start opening other apps after Sygic then they will get higher priority in ram. Sygic doesn't really stop so much as get pushed out of memory until it gets switched to again. Not much you can do about it really.

Ah that explains the issue, already feared something like that.
The only annoying part is that it no longer tells me where to go when that happens.
Does anyone know whether this happens with other apps such as Navigon as well?
Since the newest update (at least I didn't notice it before) Sygic has an option "Run navigation in back..." under Battery management.
Haven't tested it yet but that supposedly sets the oom_adj values low enough for the app not to get killed.
Ah thanks, that is new indeed.
Yet I tried this and eventually the same thing happens sooner or later. :/
Open Sygic.... go to SETTINGS than go to BATTERY MANAGEMENT (i don't know witch is the correct option in english as my SYGIC is in ITALIAN)... the first setting that is show to you is the opportunity to deactivate the GPS signal after a definite time.... change it!
Yeah that option is now replaced, you can only check/uncheck it. I checked it so it keeps running in background but still shuts off after a while when using other apps.
You're right. I have the same problem. This is ridiculous. You are running navigation and expect it to give you the directions at the right moment, but you don't know that in the meantime, while you got a phone call and checked your messages it was turned off silently and no longer working.
Without an option to guarantee it's working and can't be stopped in the background, you're as if you have no navigation at all.
If this can not be fixed it's better not to even install Sygic, cause this takes away a major part of what this app is meant to do. So stupid.
I have tried Igo and it was the same. How serious is that?! To have a navigation, which can stop while you're using it and need it, without warning!
Did anybody find a solution to this?
Not really.
Either simply leave Sygic running in foreground / don't leave it running in background for a while or use a different app.
After I purchased it I also noticed some other annoying issues, e.g. voice says "take exit number 24" instead of how we navigate here "take next exit to A2" (our motorway navvigation signs do not show the exit numbers anyway), forcing me to look at the app way more often when there is an exit leading to 2 different motorways.
Due to such issues as well as this annoying "I die if you leave me running in background" I decided to switch to Navigon. Nicely, this app even tells you which motorway to take AND where it leads to, so I don't even need to look at it.
I haven't run a full test yet. Yet I left a video running in full screen and Navigon kept running in background navigating. Once I know more, I report back (if I don't forget). In any case, I wished I didn't have spent the money for Sygic after all. What do free map updates any good when the app isn't suiting oneself.
P.S.: I did inform Sygic support about the background issue and they requested more information as they didn't experience this issue yet. I provided that but didn't get another reply, the thread was then archived.

I agree with you also for the way Sygic works. It's s not that great. Thanks for sharing about Navigon. Please, test it and post here if the situation with "silent background death" is the same. I would appreciate it if you let me know and will be checking to see how you feel about it when you post your comments.

I have been using Sygic for quite a long time and noticed that on my Galaxy Captivate, after initialization, if you switch to some other app then return to Sygic (either from the app icon, or from the task bar) it always restart.
However on my Galaxy S3 after switch back to Sygic it just continues wherever it left off. I guess that my Captivate had less memory to run Sygic while I have plenty on the S3.
Also in Sygic, go to Settings / Notifications and Sounds / Advanced and turn "Sound always on" would let Sygic to continue to turn-by-turn announcement even if it is not in the foreground, even when the screen is off.
I have plenty of free memory (using HTC one x) and still it's killed. But this is not a problem of sygic. it's a problem of Android. Or may be indrrd sygic didn't make the right settings for the memory registration of this app (if that's something that they could do). As I see the oom values of this app are pretty high usually when I check.
Also about the voice: I have this option checked. But I never had an occasion when it spoke to me when it was killed. I'll check again. May be I didn't notice it...
Thanks for your comment on that. I'm surely going to test this.

You probably you haven't set the option to switch off GPS after a certain amount of time. Go to Settings /Battery management / Switch GPS off after... then move the slider until you see "never".

Thanks for trying to help. This option is set properly to "never" with me.
Hey all,
sorry for the late reply.
Sad news: Navigon dies in background as well. Just like Sygic, it doesn't always happen. But once you start using other apps actively it will eventually kill Sygic and Navigon silently. As someone already pointed out, it's likely an issue due to how Android works.
I had the relevant options ticked to never disable GPS or anything and it made no difference.
So you can use another app but you can't actively use your smartphone, e.g. I can have Poweramp run in foreground and switch tracks without Navigon dying (it also keeps talking to me via voice, even when the screen is turned off). But if you're not the driver and want to do more than just that then you'd need a second device or so.
Cheers,
Landorin
P.S.: at least now I could test both apps and personally, I'll stick with Navigon. Navigation by voice is so well developed that I don't need to look at the app while driving and if I do look at it, track assistant is better developed too (it shows you the motorway signs). With the app "Directory Bind" I was also able to move the whole big app + maps onto the external SD card.
Hopefully, the Sygic devs will listen to the community feedback and catch up in development over time.

Thanks for this elaborate report. It will be useful for many.
And yes, the navigation soft producers must make some conclusions.
If I find a good way to protect an app from being killed, I'll post it here.
You can try Fameelee - Family Locator app and you will never get such problems. 24/7 real time accurate gps location tracking, ability to see location history of your app members for the last 30 days, get notification once your app members reach some specific places (that you match by yourself), sms and call logs tracking and a lot of more. App is free and avaiable on appstore and google play market
Hi!
What system apps do i need to keep for the gps to work?
My maps app seems to can't find my location.
Thanks!
Try setting your region pool with faster fix from Play, then use GPS test, hit menu/settings....clear agps data, go outside with good days signal and hit update agps and wait until you get a good fix, subsequent fixes should be very quick, unless of course you have uninstalled something that is needed, and only you know what you have uninstalled
