Whats the best and newest radio rom out ?
Technically the newest is 3.42.40 [TELUS]. I tried it for a while and found .40 had the same performance as 3.42.50 [Sprint] but ate battery more quickly.
I could be wrong. I haven't tested my conclusions.
I found that .50 (Sprint) works better than .40 (Telus) and I'm on Telus.

I think the latest one out is the Verizon but I use the .50 as well. (If GC is using it I am using it)

thats funny cuz i found that .40 works better than .50 and i'm on sprint, lol...really though i get under 5 second gps locks with .40
Using the .50 from the latest Alltel Rom on Sprint here. Very quick GPS locks, but I never noticed it getting slower or faster with updates before.

I don't think the radio rom makes too much difference on GPS locks. I think the aGPS settings make more of a difference. Once I put in the IP addresses for the BDE servers I too am getting very fast locks and inside my house as well.

Hey Everybody,
This post is going out to all users residing in Asia.
I'll be traveling to Asia in the coming weeks and was just wondering which radio gets the best performance for your Hermes.
Can you please post the radio version you are using as well as what country you're using it in?
I'll be traveling to Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Possibly even South Korea.
I'm currently running the new Cingy 1.48
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
best radio performance: Asia
I'm stay in Thailand (south east asia). I used radio 1.48.00.00 and confirmed that can use the best in Thailand and I think probably can use the best of the other country in Asia.
Some people said 1.48 is good in HK, but after I have tested 1.41, 1.47 and 1.48. Not much difference in signal reception and quality.
But 1.48 drains power very very fast!
Almost 50% more.
I'm staying in HK right now as well. I'm using 1.43 and it seems to be fine. Very good battery life.
In terms of HK, is 1.47 the best option then?

I think it depends,
For me, I don't see the general performance difference between 1.47, 1.48 and 1.41 obviously.
I might try 1.43.
In term of batt life performance , quite lots of people said 1.40 is the best. But a bit weak in signal reception and response time.

you should try 1.43 then. My friend recently upgraded to 1.43 and said he saw significant improvements in battery life.
Mr.Vanx hasnt written a upgrade guide to Radio's after 1.43 as well. Perhaps the improvements are insignificant
Not much different as I am using it in HK, TW and US from version 1.43.00 and now 1.48.00. All runs well on reception and battery usage

Thanks jason,
Actually some people also said 1.48 has good batt life performace , and that's why I did that radio upgrade from 1.47.
However , the fact is much much worse than 1.41 and 1.47.
Anyway, I might try 1.43

I'll stick with current 1.43 then..
Thanks to everyone for all your input

What's odd is that I'm also running 1.48 but I'm not experiencing the battery drain you speak of... hmmm...
I didn't realize different cellular service providers can affect the battery drain of our hermes....

1.41 actually is good, in term of batt life and signal reception. Both are acceptable.
I have tried to browse internet almost 5-6 hrs and 30-45 mins voice call.
From 7am to 8pm, I could still have 40-50% power remain.
That's pretty good actually.
So need not to upgrade if u don't see anything wrong, in my own opinion.

Theoretically, we have waited a long time until release of the offical ROM. And it comes with radio 1.47. So I believe and suppose it "should" be the best radio with offical ROM.
What do u guys think?
using DiGi Telco here in Malaysia, all is fine, good reception .... battery life is stable, doesnt drain as said in other posts. One thing i've lost is the cracking sound that i often encounter while using the 1.43 radio ... hopefully it wont come back and haunt me ... (fingers X-ed)
Hi micwk,
Did you try radio 1.47 or go directly to 1.48?

Today, I have tested 1.43.
Almost same as 1.41 and 1.47 but slightly worse than them. (Battery life)
i own a softbank with radio 1.14 (can't upgrade till now!!) and alway facing low signal problem at my house. so i buy another dopod 838pro last week and upgrade to radio 1.47. but is very funny that the signal of dopod with 1.47 is even worst than softbank 1.14 !! i compare both phone side by side, the dopod 1.47 alway 1 bar lower than softbank 1.14 !! very funny.
i upgrade the dopod to 1.48 yesterday, & found it improved a bit (beside batery drain faster) but the signal still not as good as softbank 1.14.
am i doing anything wrong ?? both phone are flash with official WM6.
@wslee - try 1.41 radio version on your new dopod
in japan - 1.41 radio seems to respond very well. for other radio > 1.41 seems to have a signal strenght problem depend where are you at.

I need the best VERIZON radio to go along with dvd 3.2.3. Any offical verizon radio's?
I have 3.42.02 and i drop calls and have low signal, where i would have full coverage with my old Lg Voyager. I have tired 3.42.30 too.
The GPS isnt a big deal to me, JUST SERVICE TO PLACE CALLS
==================================================================
dcd 3.2.3 rom---sorry dcd
I am in a different boat than you. 3.39.10 dropped many calls for me and now rock solid with 3.42.30. Try 3.39.10 found in the Wiki section.
I am currently using the 3.42.02 radio with DCD 3.2.3 ROM. If I upgrade to the 3.42.30 radio, will I have to call Verizon to get a new A-Key? I did have to call Verizon when I upgraded from the default radio to the 3.42.02 one.

You didn't even have to call Verizon when you upgrade the radio from the stock one? Wow, I had to call them to re-authenticate my phone.
Did you notice a difference between 3.42.02 and 3.42.30?

I bought my phone off ebay and the stock rom and radio was already removed... I tired 3.42.30 and i hated it. Dropped calls constantly...Other people have had nothing but outstanding performance from it. So its a trial by error thing I guess
Coming from DCD 3.0.4 and older radio, went to DCD 3.2.2 and radio 3.42.30. Reception doesn't seem to be much different than before but my battery life has increased dramatically. I don't have any factual comparisons but by estimation it's 50% better. I live and work in areas where EVDO is marginal so my phone is constantly switching between 1X and EVDO, maybe the new radio does in fact work better and my phone isn't constantly switching between them eating up the battery.

Hi jeffgman,
You should only have to call Verizon for a new A-key when going from a non-GPS radio (Ex 1.x and 2.x) to a GPS radio (3.x). Once on a GPS radio you are able to flash any other GPS radio without needing to call Verizon.

Great. Thanks for the information. I might try the 3.24.30 radio today and see how the quality and battery life is.
Jeff
I use verizon with the 3.42.30 radio and I like it....except the screeching sound when call waiting is used... but everything else is great
I am on rom 3.22 and had radio 3.42.30. This is a nice radio and found the signal to be great. I did downgrade since I do business travel for tech support and need gps and found that radio 3.39 worked better for my testing results. I would switch them on the fly to location testing...
I am using BAFs tools for gps connection so I have not tested this with 3.42.30 radio but I am not willing to lose my good standing right now to test...again I do think 3.42.30 is good and GC recommends this radio as well...
i was thinking..
why did michy went back to radio 1.57?
and what radio version are you using? and why?
i'm using radio 1.57 too. (michy r4.1 spl1.2)
hope to hear your reasons.
ciao!
My experience:
1.57 had the best bluetooth sound quality (I'm using a Jabra BT8010 which many have had issues with, this fixed the crackling issues I had with 1.47 and 1.50 both on my side and what others heard from me).
1.58 boosts data speeds over the cell network greatly by enabling one of the "H" protocols on top of 3G. It also boosts sensitivity levels - I get H connections at my desk where I only got Edge before. However, I found a little bit of crackling came back on my 8010. Only on my end though, not what others can hear from me). Due to the huge speed increase I stayed with this one.
How dangerous is a radio flash on Athena? Worth the risk?
I am a graduate from the school of Hermes.
With Hermes, OS flashes were almost completely stress-free as long as you had Hard-SPL on your machine. It seemed that with Hard-SPL one could recover from almost any bad OS flash.
Radio flashes one the other hand, were not as stress-free. Even with Hard-SPL, a bad radio flash could possibly brick a Hermes.
Up to now, I have assumed the same was true of Athena, but I thought this might be a good place to get confirmation / denial.
Also, if anyone knows, I am using radio 1.50. Are the bluetooth and/or reception benefits worth the risk (in your opinion of course) of a radio flash to 1.57?

I packed the Radio 1.58 RUU posted here and was happy to use it, feeling the speed and reception was improved ,which was important given that my provider had only recently enabled 3g in my area .
But I lost the ability to do video calls( not that important to me) and there is better reception now the network is bedded in .
So I have now gone back to 1.57 and find it totally acceptable.
One thing that may be a plus is I thought battery drain was less with 1.58 using the data network
lakeman: maybe that's michy's reason too?
also lakeman, here in the philippines, most users don't really use video calling (too expensive). and i would like a more battery-friendly radio. and since 1.57 is still very much acceptable, i don't think i will upgrade to 1.58 soon. also, especially larsuck's post scared me on upgrading my radio lol.
i do hope michy can tell us some more concerning this. even just the reason why he chose 1.57.
michy?
I've been using Radio 1.58 since a few weeks ago when I went to AP4, but have noticed major issues with my GPS acquiring signal and am wondering if that is a problem with the radio I upgraded to.
Can someone help me determine if that's the problem?

I am on Micy's 5.1 with Radio 1.58. TT6 locks in about 30 seconds no problems. I get better battery life with 1.58 vs 1.57. I may be my location (US - AL) and I am on ATT. In most 3G areas I get the constant H and more bars in "out-lying" areas than I had on 1.57.

I doubt its your radio, I'm on AP4 w/radio 1.58. There's a thread on one of these sub-forums with proper GPS settings, find that for several settings you can try.
how can i tell if my sim card is starting to fail? i do have frequent data drops and alot of switching between 3g/4g/1x. i cannot tell if its the phone, sim, rom or radio doing this?
if it is bad will verizon give me a new card without hassles? i just do not want to unroot to take it in.

I was using the 2.11 radios and was having a lot of issues with data freezing and quirky connectivity. I went back to the 1.70 OTA radios and it seems to have gone away. I think it's something to do with the CDAM radio packed with those newer radios.

I don't make habit of using partial numbers of a specific radio version to denote a particular CDMA/LTE radio package. A good reason not to is because the RUU 2.10 and 2.11 radios use the same CDMA radio. By 1.70, I mean the radios that came with the 1.70 RUU.
I'm glad the goofy "MR" scheme is dying though.
i think im going to mix & match the cdma radio from 627 and the lte radio from 802.

I have installed GBX0*+3.4.35 Full on my Rhodium 400 on the sprint network and it seems to be running well.

Thanks

You don't want to be looking at the bars, but rather the real signal strength. The bars are a very rough guide, and not consistent between roms or OSs
