Help me understand - Touch Pro, Fuze ROM Development

Please don't flame me because I'm new to flashing.... I have been reading and digging for two hours but this information is very overwhelming and a lot to understand. I dug through the WIKI but am still hoping for a little guidance... I just got an AT&T Fuze and am looking to upgrade the rom. My questions are the following:
1) Using standard software (ActiveSync), can I back everything up and then restore it after a ROM update?
2) Do I need any special software to do the ROM update?
3) Is the performance difference really worth my time and effort?
4) Is it as easy as changing the registry key to remap the keyboard back?
5) Are there any negative ramifications of upgrading the ROM?
6) Is there a certain ROM that you guys recommend for speed but that is also stable?
I have no interest in modifying the ROMs... I'm just looking for a good solution to make this phone perfect by pepping it up a little bit.
Thanks for all the help!

2-U need to install HardSPL to unlock ur device.
3-Here, all our time are not worthless wasted.
4-Peace of cake.
5-No but with coutious.
6-
Thanks & sorry for my english.

I was wondering about a lot of these questions as well.
What would you guys suggest for roms to try?
Are some faster than others? Have more programs than others? Why do you like that specific flavor over the others?

Just follow these easy steps:
1-Flash ur stock ROM ( I assume u know where to find it )
2-See HardSPL forum & download Manual SSPL & stock ROM SPL
3-Unpack Manual SSPL, copy to ur device & run from ur device.
4-Flash Stock SPL as normal flash.
5-Done. (Send for warranty)
I hope there is nothing I missed

Can anyone else comment on 2,3 or 6? Thanks guys!

2: you need hardspl, as stated before
3: yes, most cooked roms are much more responsive then the standard rom
6: read the start posts of the threads, and decide what you want, I don't have my crystal ball at hand to tell you what rom to use

I too was very erm, "dubious" about how good a cooked ROM could be, how much difference it'd make, etc, also was very confused about which to use.
I tried the new Elite ROM, which was fantastic, but to me (and this is why we have different ROM's) it was loaded with just too much stuff, it worked well, but was overkill. I then gave ROMeOS2 a go, and found that to be a lot "lighter weight" then the Elite ROM.
it is all to do with what you want, if you want a fully loaded ROM, with tonnes of included goodness, then the likes of the Elite ROM are great, if you want a simpler, lighter weight ROM, then the likes of ROMeOS2 are super too.
it is all to do with personal preferences...

Thanks for making this thread and answering the questions on this thread. I too am new to this, and read as much as I could but at the end its overwhelming. This thread helped with alot of my questions for a beginner. Thanks guys keep up the good work.

Ditto... I've reading for the past few hours and got myself totally confused because this arena is completely new to me. Thank you all for your hard work and patience with noobs like me.

Can someone please provide us a resource that isnt cluttered like nuts to flash the phone with the snappiest rom available?

I have to agree with below. I tried Elite, then PROven and finally ROMeOS2. I liked ROMeOS2 the best out of all of them, followed by Elite. This is in terms of speed. ROMeOS is not feature packed, but you can always add this stuff in yourself, and thats what I prefer to do.

Does anyone know of any simple, easy walkthroughs for updating the ROM? I really need to do this.

1) Generally speaking updating between rom versions isn't a good idea, but you can find plenty of information about backing up your rom by searching.
2) You need HardSPL, and then to follow the flashing instructions. The information is already provided in numerous places.
3) If it wasn't do you think so many people would do it? If you don't think so, then you've only wasted one flash if you try.
4) There is a cab file to change the keyboard layout, search for it, you will find it.
5) That's a ridiculously broad questions, all the risks of flashing are easy to find, yet again, i say "search"
6) There is no "best" rom, it depends on what your preferences are.
Please use the tools are your disposal. Thread is now closed.

Clean, stock-like ROM

Hi guys,
I was wondering if anybody could recommend me a simple, clean stock-like custom ROM without unnecessary programs and things installed. The primary reason for me wanting to flash to a custom ROM is for the considerable performance gain I keep reading about.
I have an Australian-bought unbranded HTC Touch Pro (raph100).
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Tim,
Since this will be closed very quickly by mods....read in this section for a lite roms...the cooks put in the heading if they make lite Roms. Click on the rom and read the first few pages and it will tell you what is included in it...some examples are Da G and NATF's. No one knows what "unnecessary programs and things installed" is because it is different for each person.
I would go with this one. Actually, I am. It has ZERO bloatware in it and is very fast.

I use the Optus stock ROM w/ 1.08.25.20M1 Radio. It's fantastic...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The Optus stock ROM is actually the one that came with my device originally since this is an Australian TP. If you don't think that any considerable performance gain can be had by installing a cooked ROM then I may as well stick with this. Thanks anyway
Tim
(PS. I'm new here, so I don't quite understand why this thread will be quickly closed by mods... sorry
You can flash any rom you want since most don't include a radio.
I use Da_G's Roms because they don't include ANYTHING. The ROM is a very basic WM6.1 rom with all of the latest drivers for the best performance. All programs outside of the standard windows apps are separate downloads which can be installed as you see fit.
This is nice because you get to see what a BASIC Windows Mobile environment is and what the phone runs like without all the extra HTC extras. It also gives a very good starting point to customize the phone the way YOU want.
The good thing is that because YOU install all the extras manually... you can also uninstall them in the event a newer version comes out.
There are other good ROMs too... but most come with a "standard" set of programs, most of which I don't ever use or want. I like Da_G's because I can be in control of what is on my phone.
My 2 cents.

so? new or not, it would make sense to read the wiki first. i think they even put sometihng in to tell u to read the wiki after signing up (though i'm not 100% about that), but either way, you should try doign some reading before posting. it can seem liek a lot to read, but if u want to make improvements to ur phoen, then take some time to invest in it.

ROM Summary

Hi
Sorry - but something of a newbie question...
I've Security Unlocked my phone (yehee!) inc HardSPL. Now I have the urge to do something more exciting with it... but haven't a clue where to start!
Can I just load a new ROM on, or do I need to load other things to go with it?
Can anyone recommend a good ROM to try first? Ideally something with a quite clean interface (perhaps 'Diamond'ish?). Or maybe list one or two options?
Are there any versions which are known to be stable, as opposed to bang up to date, but not fully tested - or are they all works in progress?
DO I need to update my radio / HardSPL 1.15? Currently R1.58.16.27 / G25.61.30.03H
Many thanks to anyone who take the trouble to answer.
You can start playing with HardSpl 1.22, then continue with the radio version, and, finally, try a couple of ROM'S i.e. LUZY is very nice, smooth, and includes Manilla 2D.
Recomendations
I would highly recommend upgrading your Hard SPL to 1.22 as most new ROMs require this and upgrade your radio also (I am using 1.71.09.01, find it superb). I can also recommend Nemanjlo's WM6.5 Rom I used to flash a ROM a week but since having this one I love it. There is a thread dedicated to plugins and extras for customizing WM6.5 check the "WM6.5 Tips and Tricks" Thread a guy called TWolf has done some amazing flash stuff with 6.5. There are also links to some amazing widgets in that thread: Weather, Facebook, You Tube and Twitter to name a few
Hope This Helps
Hi Guys
Many thanks for the suggestions. Exactly what I was hoping for and very nice to get clear, straight answers.

Do you use the latest version? Or is there an earlier 'stable' version you've stuck with?
Also, he seems to have 4 versions! Standard and Lite for 2G and 3G. Which do you recommend?
What is the difference between the 2G and 3G? If it makes a difference, I'm with UK T-Mob and have an account with inclusive data.
Thanks

I think the difference between 3G and 2G is the video calling (Which I never use) I have the latest standard version of the ROM with the 3G dialer (Skinned) it is fast and stable. My "Today screen" is a project being run by the titanium crew (Check the "Tips and Tricks Thread") to make it look like WM7
Backup
This may be a bit patronising but I would recommend using "PIMBackup" (Search for PIMbackup using the forum to download) and backup all of your info to your Memory card. This will cover things like Contacts, Text and Emails.
If you have any bought or newly installed programes on your device make sure you have all the activation codes available and CAB files on your storage card or PC. As when you flash a ROM it is like a hard reset, everything will be wiped and can be a bit of a pain reinstalling everything if you do not have it to hand.
I have a folder on my storage card called CABS and I simply go down the list after a ROM flash reinstalling everything.

I managed to wipe everything when I first loaded HardSPL. Fortunately, I have most of the cabs and much of the data was reinstalled by ActiveSync. But I suspect I lost some things I'd prefer to have kept.

Stupid noob needs help

Hey guys !
I've been around here for many years but have allways been using Windows Mobile phones. I've had a Hero for about a year and i must say that i am very pleased with it. It works so damn good ! I've been flashing roms on windows mobile phones and even created roms my self.
However this Android / Linux world is so new to me that i have no idea what i need to do in order to simply flash a rom on my Hero!
What i get is that i need to root my device. There are some few guides for this in the wiki but i still do not know if my Hero is a Virgin og a Telus. How can i see this?
Also i see a lot of Linux based talk and commands (i presume) that i do not understand anything of. Do we have any desciption of the most common used commands and such stuff so new people like me can get a better understanding of what you guys are actually talking about?
When i learn all this i will edit the wiki with the information. And as i am new it is easier for me to fill in what is missing if you understand
.. And yes i have searched!

Seconded.
And when you're unlocked, check out Villain and Vanillain ROM's (check out previous post), definitely two of the best
if you want to know if your phone is rooted download and install "Super user" and run it,you will then know if your phone is rooted or not.
I,like you,was a WM user and found android to be more complicated, but in fact it´s not...once you root your phone and install Amon-RA recovery ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4549551&postcount=1 ) its much easier and simple to do things.

Right now im still using AychTeeSee's just to be able to use the Buuf Theme
I'm in the exact same situation as Da9L . Could you please let me know if flashing a new ROM will also change the Firmware version?
Currently my firmware is 1.5. I've seen on a friend's G1 the voice search widget and I'm dying to get that on my device. From what I've been told, i need to get a newer firmware, but I've got no idea on how to do this.
Any help would be appreciated ^_^
Some questions:
So the short line of the process of flashing a custom rom is when using unbranded htc hero:
1. Downgrade my software to 1.76, as iam using the newest
2. Root the device acording to _this_ guide
3. Perform a backup
4. Flash the custom rom as i flash a stock rom?
Is that it? It leads me to some more questions
What is this "recovery image" and is there any reason to flash a new one?
And why is there any reason to change this at all ?
How do i get danish xt9 for sms?
And please i have a feeling that i am getting this wrong.. Can you please explain to me the procedure of doing all this ?
Is there any benefit by flashing a rom?
I mean the stock rom actually runs pretty good and is stable. A custom rom is likely to be a little more unstable than a stock rom, but often give you more speed and newer features. This is when we are talking Windows Mobile, but is it the same here? What are the pros and cons by flashing a custom rom over the stock rom?

It varies depending on the ROM tbh. It's a bit like the high-tech version of 'how long's a piece of string'?
Really, you're likely to get improved performance, root permissions, user interface tweaks, different versions of applications that are better than the default ones, maybe a custom kernel (if it's a 1.5 release you're looking at).
The custom kernels can have better performance due to optimisations in them. Not sure how much of this is like winmo (never had a winmo phone, all I know is that you are able to install alternative ROMs on them), but with android the core OS is open source, so you get more performance boosts under the hood.
Anyone able to add to that?

That sounds great. However, since this is so new to me i do not know what new tweaks and apps i will be able to use and get if you follow me? When i have flashed a new custom rom, propably android 2.1, i do not know what new things it has and therefore where and how to use these new functions. And does the real advantage in a custom rom also get to a normal user or is the advantages more directed at the developers or?

[Q] Flashing New Radio

I just purchased a 512Leo Hd2, unbranded SPL 1.42. Now this site has been an amazing resource. I have been thinking about flashing a new ROM but I'm not sure about it yet. To tell you the truth I don't really mind the stock HTC ROM. However, I'm dying to run Android 2.2, problem being is that my radio version is 2.06.51.07 now from what I understand that version won't allow me to run Android. And I've tried it, Linux starts to load and either it freezes or the screen slowly blacks out. I've tried the formatting and it doesn't work. So my ? is this. After running HSPL, also don't know which one to run 1,2 or 3?, will the stock ROM still be there? IN which case I can then go ahead ad flash a radio version that will allow me to run Android? Or do I have to find a stock ROM from somewhere and load that? Can I save the ROM version that is on my phone now then reload it? How do I do that? If someone c an fill these blanks in for me I'd appreciate it!
Cheers

Flashing HSPL will do absolutely nothing to your ROM. It simply unlocks the phones SPL and allows the flashing of non-branded or unofficial ROMs.
More about HSPL 1&2 and HSPL 3
Which one you need depends on your device. I think HSPL3 might work for all but to be honest I've never bothered to look at it since I have HSPL2 and it works for me.

Android works perfectly for me on my stock ROM with radio 2.12.50 For some people, the stock ROM does not work so the short answer is: "it depends". I say try a new radio ROM, leave the stock ROM alone and see if it works. If not, then look into flashing a custom ROM also. As for saving your current ROM, that's a bit more tricky, and more trouble than it's worth since you can find pretty much all the stock roms in the rom development threads such as THIS one.
If you have any other questions or need more clarification ask away (or PM me).
One more thing about flashing ROMS... Use caution and ask questions if you are unsure about something. Make sure you read and understand the threads dedicated to flashing in the links provided... Otherwise, you will have an expensive paper weight on your hands.

Hi!
I've been reading all your posts and i have a similar problem with my Leo.
I'm new at this so i am affraid to, like you said, have an "expensive paper weight".
I tried running the "FLASHAHOLIC RUU.." via USB but it keeps hanging while running task29. I then tried the official HTC web site but i doesnt work either.
I baght my device on amazon so it comes with WWE and o want to change it to Portuguese specially because of some keybord letters like "ç" for example.
Can you please give me a step by step guide so i can instal a new rom?
Thanks in advance.

So my question is all based on this, and after a lot of reading I found both answers but both were old so not sure which one to trust.
I am currently rooted, unlocked, running joker's CWM & Joker's CM10, and have a nandroid backup from back when I was running stock.
Is step one really to roll back to stock base, re-root my phone, re-unlock my bootloader, and make a new nandroid backup? Or are these instructions assuming we are not already rooted/unlocked?
Can I skip step one and just flash the new radio and then Joker's GSM CM10?
(Long time lurker, first time poster, 9 different phones hacked to bits and this is my first question ever, if this has been asked before no combination of GSM/Stock/SBF found it.)

This might help a bit, ask if you want anything clarified. Their ROMS definition is a little not perfect, A Rom as it is normally used here is a zip file containing all the bits that makes an android install, A custom rom is a bundle of the kernel and android version, tweaks, themes, fixes, modifications, basically everything you use on a system as tailored by the ROM builders.

Definitely here is the best we have forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393519 then you follow all the myriad links based on what you are trying to do.
Not being sure what your goal is it is hard to be more specific.
