WTF Is it not touch screen? who will want this?!? lol
I DO!
since about 4 weeks
So would I. And I own a Raphael! Anybody wanna trade ? lol
Not at all. S740 is just so amazing. I am quite surprised so few people actually own it.
3G support for US possible?
Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knows if it would be possible to make a version that adds the 850MHz band for HSDPA? Maybe someone is already working on this? I do not know if the restriction to 900/2100MHz is due to its hardware design. I searched the site but seem to find contradicting info on this.
I own a Fuze, which is nice and fast on 3G but after having used the S710 and S730 I very much prefer one-hand navigation for everything else. The only thing keeping me from buying the S740 is that I want fast Internet access.
Thank you in advance for any info on this.
I think that limitation is hardware-based and therefor cannot be just "added"
HTC might work on US version of S740 but I have heard no rumors about such thing.
Guys I own one since a 3 weeks now and I acompletely in LOVE...
It is a "She" definitely (Rose)
I own one since 1 week and I m quite happy with it. Just a few things could be improved:
- Battery, mine last ~24hrs with a normal usage, HSDPA on, Btooth off, wlan off, Skype and MSN running and mail check every 10 min. But If I m in an area where HDSPA is always available (like... HOME) the battery last a lot less.
- Mine numeric keypad does a noisy noise.... like if there was sand behind the keys.
- Meteo doesn't work with other cities ( I tried everything... )
- I can t find a decent Navigation (GPS) software and a browser that actually work with the browser game oGame (I tried explorer, opera mini, opera mobile)

MSN, Skype and periodical e-mail checking produce quite some traffic and require a few CPU cycles, too. Both of these factors are quite good battery consumers.

Do you mean HTC weather on the homescreen? And what exactly do you mean? Are you unable to select different city than default or unable to synchronize data for different city?

Yes, I mean HTC weather, the problem is that I cannot add other cities (present on accuweather). There are a few tricks for other HTC devices but they don t seem to work. (The cities can be easily added but the device is unable to download the data from accuweather)

Hmm, I like my smartphones. (S710/S730/S740) Easy one Finger Navigation, you must not toogle between fingertips and Keyboards and much faster.
The most of our female Users like much more Smartphone Edition, is much easier to use for standard things.
And the today "New Email" Plugin is much better:
It shows "all" incoming Emails, also the Emails that are automaticly routed via Exchange Rules to Subfolders. With a "normal" PDA you see only New Emails that comes into your Inbox, with S740 you see all "New" Emails that are automaticly moved to Subfolders into the Today screen. That´s really the "best of" of the S740
I Wonder, why not Touch HD, Touch Pro, Diamond has this feature??

I hate touch
I hate touch screens, this is the ideal device.
i wish it was a big thinner, but frankly I am so please that HTC, Samsung, Nokia (s60v3) and others continue to manufacture non-touch devices.
They are so much faster to use, less input error, and no constant cleaning of screen!
yes that´s right. I use sometimes Nokia E66/E71 with Symbian OS, for quick & Dirty use on the road, that´s really fine, only the Nokias Mail for Exchange (MfE) Application is not so good like the one of S740. When this has same charakter sometimes, I will switch completly to Nokia´s symbian OS. ;-)

jcarreira,
Some simple suggestions:
- If you don't like the home plug, don't use it (choose or cook ROM without it, remove from today screen, ...)
- If you don't like part of the home plug (= weather) remove it by changing its settings
- If you feel the need to alter the home plug, feel free to try and hack it or find a version with more settings; you could possibly provide the altered version to us all
What I'm trying to say is:
These people here are doing their best to find solutions and share them with us, even solutions they don't need themselves, WITHOUT PAYMENT and WITHOUT access to the code ... I'm impressed by what Gullum, h4ma, PDAViet and anyone i forget (a lot of people) can achieve in such a short period with so little resources ...
Kind regards
We should be grateful ...
I must remind you that the work performed the the cookers is not in discussion. Indeed the are doing a very good job to provide us very good WM6 ROM. ans of course, in case you haven't noticed yet, HTC Home is not developed by them, but by HTC that in my opinion haven't done any piece of software that was goos enough.

As far as i have read, i think that it is not a matter of being gratefull with people who works on this things. HTC home plug is made by HTC and the matter is that there are a lot of better applications than XDA WEATHER and hopfully it can be changed. That's all.

Excuse me, but I think that this is not the question.....
People here don't doubt about cookers work, only are explaining an opinion about a HTC software...
As far as I know, HTC Weather is not developed for nobody that cooks a ROM, only is included in the ROMS, for this, I thnik that your answer is not correct...

But the one who is speaking about the cookers?. Simply a topic is exhibited to see if we can improve between all. Nobody says that the work of the cookers is not valued, it seems to me that you have not understood what is proposed in this post.
It is basically if between all it is possible to improve the HTC HOME, and in particular the WEATHER.

Gentlemen... shal we return to the subject? There was just a miscommunication. All what can de said about this, has been said allready...
Let get back to the core-question; is there an alternative to the Weather application used by the Weather tab of HTCHome plug-in?
Like the way the music player is changeable with a simple registry tweak.

Yes, Many, many people had this issue and asked the same question. Have you read ANY of the AP4 threads?
It seems based on what I read, that if you uncheck/remove the HTC home screen form the today screen you may get it to work. Not sure as I don't use IGO, if that doesn't work check the various AP4 threads or search the threads
Good Luck!
Agreed I found that disabling the HTC Home plugin allowed iGO8 to run; others have found it necessary to disable Touchflo as well.
I assume you have a legitimate version? The cracked versions can be much more troublesome

It's not warez mister Legally Advisor. I assume that you have no demo on your computers / pda . You paid for everything that you are using , and did not remove the commercials from the free items like YM etc.
In this real world , sometimes you have to get first something , see if is working , then when the trial is done , you decide to buy or not to buy. I do not want to put 100 Pounds in something before I see it working.
But I am sure that you are some ASDA customer and you got the PDA from your employer so this problems are not common to you. Please keep away from the posts that are not for you. This is not a food thought forum. Thanks

I couldnt get australian maps till recently and following above instructions with "evaluation"version of Igo8 am running it on ap4 without htc home.
I like it better than Igo2006se as reattaching the keyboard doesnt stuff up the controls.
Also I can change the orientation of the screeen and Igo remains in landscape whereas Igo2006 would again stuff up.

Funny that you're getting so angry if your software is legal...."is not a legitimate copy" were your words.
If warez are condoned on this site, it will eventually have problems. and then we all lose out. Go reflect on that and try not to be quite so sanctimonious next time.

Really .... OMG ?! And who will come to inspect my PDA around the world ?! I think that you have a problem called frustration , cause you can't find cheap software. Try with doctor Phil ....
An intersting scenario I found when on holiday in Slovenia this week- in a quiet moment, I installed the Manila Dialler (I'd never tried it before!); I then forgot I'd done it.
I then needed SatNav in a hurry due to some roadwords and lack of road signs- could I get iGO8 to start? No Soft reset, tried disabling all Today Items, disabling VuFlo- still nothing. Gave up.
Got back to hotel and decided to look in ' Remove Programs' then remembered the Manila Dialler. Removed it, and iGO worked again
So, iGO8 in AP4 doesn't like Manila, or HTC Home, but for me is OK with VuFlo active.

Woah,... Where on earth to begin?......
1st question to ask yourself,... Are you happy to keep it Orange branded?.... Or do you want to install a custom ROM?.... Bear in mind, some ROMS have little tweaks added for better performance and stability, some are experimental, and have bugs that that need a little ironing out, but you could swap and change as many times as you want to test and find one best for you.
BUT BE WARNED,... Changing your ROM will in theory invalidate your warranty,... but you can always flash back to an Orange ROM should you need to send it for repair.
So its up to you?... This is the guide I followed to install a custom ROM,... Check it out,.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253
Second,... I'd update the radio to the latest one,... The radio is something to do with how well network, wifi, gps etc work,... I updated mine and saw a big difference in network reception.
,..... Now we can start talking about apps,... All I can do here is give my recommendations,....
Apps
TuneWiki - Can show lyrics for music on your phone or even whilst streaming LastFM.
Spareparts - Extra 'settings' options not available as standard. i.e... Transition animations, Font size, Haptic feedback. Also shows Battery & App statistics.
Shazam - No explanation needed.
Opera Mini - " ".
Movies (by Flixter) - Local movie show times + cinema and DVD reviews (?).
Co-Pilot Live - Satnav.
Astro - File manager.
ACV aka Droid Comic Viewer - Self explanatory.
Audio Manager - To set volume levels for Alarm, Media Player, Alerts, Ringer, System and Calls,.. All in one easy place,... Can then add as a widget to one of your homescreens.
Games
WaveBlazer - Was addicted to this on my 5800, couldn't resist getting it again.
Armagedon Squadron - As above
MotoXMania - I think this is from iPhone, get the moto x'er from one side of course to the other by tilting phone to control biker's weight distribution.
SpeedForge 3d - 3d racing game with mines and rockets set in future, quite difficult (for me) but still fun.
Tetris - Classic!!
Solitaire - Always fun.
PapaStack - Puzzle game, have to stack up all given blocks and make them stand for 10seconds before moving on to the next level.
ThrottleCopter - Based on old flash game "copter". Click button to control throttle on helicopter to get it though the course. The most addictive game so far.
Replica Island - Fun platform game.
EDIT,... Found another even more addictive game now,...
Sketch Online - Online Pictionary,... I cant stop playing it, Minimum an hour every day!
Hope some of that helps pal.
Peace.

New Windows mobile Bing app is here!
No clear changlog is out yet.
"It's almost difficult to say how many Windows Phone owners prefer to use Microsoft's own Bing app as opposed to Google's. Luckily for those users who happily rely on using the Bing app, there is an update that brings the app to version 5.1.2010. It's unfortunate that Verizon Windows Phone owners can't get in on this update – that's because it only is available to Windows Phones on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. It's not to say that it's a bad thing for those Verizon owners because it looks to be only a maintenance update and doesn't really offer anything exciting..........."
source: Twitter via WMExperts
I uploaded the Cab here so everyone can download...even us Verizon users that got left out
This cab is for Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5.
Cheers!
If its any help this is version
Bing Mobile 5.1.2010.3290
Previous was
5.0.11249.0
Its alot quicker than the previous version and they have moved the menus to the bottom. I cant see much change.
I still prefer the old Bing/Live Search layout and configuration.
Movie times used to be so easy to browse, with the new style it does a bing search instead of getting the data from a provider. I think MS decided to cheap out. It's now basically useless in my books.

no problem
Using it on my Tmobile HD2 with Energy Rom. Working fine. I was using the previous version too and can't tell if there's any change. Wish it had a functional version of voice SMS like Microsoft TellMe.

I uploaded the Cab here so everyone can download...even us Verizon users that got left out
This cab is for Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5.
Cheers!

Here's a newer update Cab for all of you.
They have updated the lay out a bit again.
WM6
I doubt it'll work, but does anyone else here have the guts to try this out on a Kaiser to see if it works or not..??

Downloaded the latest directly from MS and installed on my Diamond/CDMA and it seems to be working fine. The one I used is a bit larger than the one a few posts up, so I've attached it for convenience.

Yeah, but isn't the Diamond WM 6.1?
I tested it on 6.1, but don't see why i won't work upwards, maybe the two are different versions indeed for different OS.
Mine worked on VGA TouchPro WM 6.1
i cant save 'gps tracking.' it remains unchecked everytime i check the settings. therefore gps is unable to locate me. this pop up always shows everytime i attempt to locate my position, "allow bing to access and store your location to improve searching and for navigation?" it doesnt matter if i chose ok or cancel because there are no change in results regardless. google maps is working fine for me so im sure its not a gps issue from my phone.
They implemented a lot of new features in the update. Neat little user powered navigation application. If you're familiar with Waze then go and download the new version... If you aren't.. then give it a shot, best of all.. its FREE!
http://m.waze.com/
i'll give it a shot...sounds nice...hope,many will join that community.
EDIT
Sorry,stupid question...my HTC HD2 ... is it a WVGA Phone oder non?!
What is waze? What is it used for? Any screen shots and introduction?
i tried the latest version WVGA but the screen is distored on my WVGA device

Waze is a Community Based Navigation Application. just go to the website and it explains everything in a lot more depth and detail.... the only issue that Waze is currently having is the "small" amount of people who actually use and utilize the applications features for everyday commuting... The reason for this is not the features or functions... because it has all the necessary tools to become the most used application on a mobile device... but rather because of just how "New" and "Unknown" it is.. if the word was spread and Waze was being used by the necessary amount of people to make the application work... Then it really would become an extremely handy and useful tool for your driving segments.

iam using samsung i8000, previous version working just fine via marketplace, but the latest version have screen distort, i'll try again later.
Thanks. I tried it. But it seems slow. Not the problem of the app. Data from wifi takes a lot of time to pull down. Which seems to defeat the idea of having updated data while you're on the move. I'd imagine it will be even slower when i use wap mobile internet.
