Headphone adapters - G1 Accessories

For anyone who wants to order their 3.5mm solution now, take a look at this one from HTC: http://www.expansys-usa.com/p.aspx?i=159613
It’s the page for one listed as being for a Touch Cruise, but there’s a page with one for every HTC phone. I’ve been using it for a few months on my HTC Touch Cruise and it’s great. The plug itself is compact, no different in size than a 3.5mm headphone plug -- and stays put (it isn't shown in the photo). It has 2 parts, the cord with the plug at one end, and a microphone with a 3.5mm jack at the other. The other part is the throwaway earbud headphones that you can toss and use your own. No bulky dongle, and makes any favorite pair of headphones into your microphone/stereo headset. Personally, I forget HTC forgot the 3.5mm jack with this one, as it's just a cable, not an annoying adapter.
The pinout of the mini-usb jack on the G1 is the same as all other HTC phones, so at the very least the microphone and stereo audio will work. Some features of the answer-button that may or may not work on the G1: push once to answer; pushing while on a call places the call on hold; 2 quick presses redials the last number; 1 long press activates voice dial. Most likely, the button will mimick whatever functionality is present with the headset that ships with the device.
It's made by HTC, and is very durable. Beware the adapters from Seidio -- they last a couple weeks and then start to give out, audio stutters, fades in/out -- they're not constructed well and within a month or so the ends start to get loose from the wire; and you can't exactly run to Best Buy for replacements.
The budget-shipping rate from MobilePlanet.com should have them to you well before your G1 arrives

Question. How far will the microphone be from my mouth? How good is the microphone...the problem is my regular headphones are kinda long like the wire is probably a good 20 inches.
So by the time its plugged into the adapter the mic is gonna be 20 inches from my mouth..and I want to be able to pic up without using the phone? will it work?

Probably -- the mic is in the end that your headphones plug into, I don't know how long it is, but I do hold the mic up a bit when I use it as that. Primarily, I like it as it's not a dongle and in use is no different than having a 3.5mm headphone plugged in. The plug itself isn't big, it stays put, and if I need to speak on it I can. The mic quality is OK, though it picks up all background noise, and a slight breeze can sound like a windstorm. Talking on it is just a convenience for me, I really wanted a standard type stereo headphone cable that I could pick up a call on. My devices tend to be music players first, and phones 2nd.

Earbuds w/out Mic/Converter?
Hey all,
I've been looking for some earbuds that don't require an adapter and just plug into the G1's current plug, or have an annoying mic; just to listen to music with.
Something that would eliminate the need for this: http://cgi.ebay.com/2-5mm-Headset-H...14&_trkparms=72:1205|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318
Does anyone know where I can find some?
Thx

While I don't endorse this company, they seem to have quite a selection. http://onlyandroid.mobihand.com/homeAccessories.asp?hCategory=1022 Personally, I am inclinded to get http://onlyandroid.mobihand.com/productaccessories.asp?id=17085&n=HTC-3-in-1-USB-Adapter so I can charge the phone and use the headset of my choice. (This adapter looks like a beast though...)

PS that website has the adapter you are looking at on ebay for less... just fyi.

mini usb to rca adapter
is there a mini usb to rca adapter that can work with the g1?

Well, it's got 2 reviews, and a rating of 1 star on the company's site... There are tons of them on eBay, wonder if those are terrible... I suspect so.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280277868575
I ordered a few of those. I will let you guys know how long it takes to get to the US and how I like the adapter itself. I also need one for the car that lets me charge and then convert to 3.5 to go into my aux input in my car.

Might be easiest to go USB -> 3.5mm -> RCA. Not elegant but parts are available.

yeah i was thinking about that, but two different adapters but i guess thats the only way for now
thanks

Same volume as the headset that ships with it. Try it and see.

sorry i wasnt clear, i didnt mean does an adaptor effect the sound, purely what is mp3 quality and sound like through headphones generally on g1 (standard headphones or not) compared to say i-phone,nokia,sony erricson etc

Sounds good to me.

i have one of those adapters, i got it for my wing way back, i think they were like 99 cents or something so i bought a bunch, they wear out pretty fast though, there nice to play music from my g1 in my car, i just wish there was a way to keep the microphone on the phone so i could talk on the phone and have the audio come through my cars speakers.

Headphone adapter
The newer G1s are shipping with a really nice official headphone adapter in the box, but I can't find it for sale anywhere. Are early adopters just left out in the cold with no headphone support? HTC has these ExtUSB ports on every one of their phones but they don't seem to sell any official adapters so I'm going to be stuck buying sub-par chinese adapters off of Ebay.

anyone have any pictures of what the headphone adapters look like?
wth, i want one official one! maybe calling t-mobile, they will send us one?

It looks the same as the standard headphones the only difference is that at the head phones them selves aren't attached to the remote (one end of the remote is the usb cable and the other is a 3.5mm port) they are 3.5mm head phones. I called t-mobile about it because my brother got one and they said they new nothing they said it wasn't on the packing list so I called HTC and they said they new nothing and since there was no bulletin they could not send me anything. I went to my local t-mobile store asked them about it and they gave me a new one out of a returned phone. The reason that tmobile says that they are not shipping them with a 3.5mm adapter is because its just a modified head phone and not an adapter and head phones in the box. I would recommend going to your local t-mobile store and asking about it.
Sorry about the picture quality I took them with my super G1 camera.

2.5mm Headset

Does anyone know if one can use any 2.5mm earplug handsfree with the XDA Mini S? The one supplied is difficult to carry lots of wires, would like to have a monaural one. Has anyone tried any? Kindly let me know. Thanks.
I have been looking for the same earphone since i bought the item on JAN06, till now I still cant find a compatible one.
That will be helpful if anyone know which is the best headphone with microphone. Not the Bluetooth one!
Thanks!
ebay Adapter eventually works
Hi there,
I was also looking for a good headset fromt he beginning on, the issue might be solved if I can install the A2DP software (will try later), but a nice wired headset would still be nice.
My favorite would be the ones SonyEricsson is shipping with the music phones.
I actually tested a 2.5mm adapter with cord and speakerpice (with clip) plus adapter for 3,5mm, which would be perfect. One was for Nokia, one for Motorola - both are NOT compatible with the HTCs!
Lately I saw a shop selling the same adapter specifically for HTC devices, so the problem might be solved.
Also I saw 2 wired 2,5mm stereo headsets from Jabra on the US website, they are for sale there but NOT in Europe. If these would work, they would for sure be of very good quality.
Anyone tested these?
Found one
I found one listed on Ebay under HTC Wizard. Its item number 9716253639, seller's name is 5starcommunication. Looks quite cool and they will mail it world wide. Will take sometime before it reaches India. But if anyone in the US orders and tries do let us know. Thanks.

I use it for headphones only (senheiser PX200 which sound great with the Wizard!), so not sure if they have mic connected or not. Sorry.
Get the adapter at radioshack.. there r tons n tons of them for $3.. i got one n it works like charm..
with/out mic
I wonder if the ones from Radioshack have a mic in the wire?
I have an adapter 2,5 to 3,5mm with GREAT sound quality, however without microphone in the adapter, thus I always need to unplug the adapter and take off the headphones to answer a call - sucks!
As mentioned so far i Only saw one adapter on ebay WITH a microphone in the adapter piece (and clip on the back) - but do not know how it performs...

2.5 mm to 3.5 mm adapters at Radio Shack
Beware of the Radio Shack adapters. They stick out and are easy to catch on a doorway as you walk through it. I did so a few weeks ago and the headphone jack no longer worked. The adapter male end bent back and damaged the phone female socket. The result was very quiet sound from the headphone jack, totally unusable for phone or music.
I sent the phone back to T-Mobile and they very kindly sent me a replacement. I bought a new Radio Shack 2.5mm male to 3.5 mm female adapter and the same day proceeded to catch it on another doorway, bending back the male plug, and damaging the phone female headphone jack. No sound again from the headphone jack. I will stay away from the headphone adapters from now on.
Phone speaker not working after using headphones - No sound
I had a similar problem (not the same). After using a 2.5 to 3.5 mm adapter my phone speakers and the mic didn't work anymore. I was about to send the device in, when I read about a solution (I think it was in XDA-Dev somewhere).
You'll have to gently move the headphone jack forward and back, twisting it a litte or even better use some compressed air blowing into the jack. It works best, if you to take out the battery and blow from the back.
My speakers work again, but the same thing happens now and then. It seems there is some switch inside the headphone/mic jack, which doesn't go back. That only happens when I use the adapter.
I realize that this is an old thread, but here is an idea for you. As far as I know, pretty much any 2.5mm headset should work. I don't use it for my phone personally, but I recently purchased a Plantronics Gamecon X20 headset for my Xbox 360 after my old one broke. Since it has a plain 2.5mm jack on the end, I thought I would plug it into my phone to see how well it worked. The answer, pretty well apparently. My wife said that it was really clear and, likewise, she sounded really clear on my end. It's going to be a little larger than the ones that have the mic hanging down inline with the wire, but on the other hand, since it's a boom mic the sound quality should be superior with less noise. I haven't tried it for listening to music so I can't vouch for the quality there, but since you are wanting a monaural headset I rather doubt that is relevant anyways. The headset was only $20 at GameStop and they had a used one for $10.

In your case, I would say that sounds like a bad adapter. I routinely use one in mine and don't have that problem. It's one of those nasty stick adapters though, so you have to be careful with them. I've seen some cable type adapters for not too much so you might look into one of those instead.
Found info which might help
HERE IS AN/THE ANSWER.
My WIZA200 and Sony P900 phone the mic headsets are compatable, even the answer button works. If you cant find what your looking for under the flavour WIZa or HTC etc... just look for what you need as a P900 type and you will be sorted.
I just checked the pinouts and this answers the very much asked question... what are the pinouts.... here they are....
http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-P-W/sonyericssson_headset_pinout.shtml
FOR WIZA AND SONY P900 >>>> 2.5mm 4 pole jack: PIN1 LEFT+, PIN2 RIGHT+, PIN3 MIC+, SHIELD(PIN4) GROUND. I just checked with multimeter and to get call answer pin3 mic and shield must short to signal the press of the answer button.
---
Just for reference Nokia 2.5mm 4pole jack is very odd... this is how they do it.
http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-Nokia/nokia_headset_pinout.shtml
on 4pole 2.5mm: 1=speaker+(positive) ### 2=mic+ ### 3=speaker -(negative) ### pin4 = mic - ###short mic+ and mic - to answer call
on 3pole 2.5mm: 1=speaker+(positive) 2=mic+ 3=shield(ground-negative) ### to answer call short speaker and shield.
See how they change their minds... first on 4 pole jacks answer call was on mic side short, then it goes on 3 pole jacks to short the speaker and ground to answer call... can these guys not make up their minds. Grrrr... totally baffling logic in this design, escept they can keep you buying specialised gear for each phone
Glad to see Sony and HTC used a more logical system and seem to stick to it. I suspect the HTC Touch HD 3.5mm is wired the same as the Wiza 2.5mm system just 3.5mm jack not 2.5mm jack.
Someone should make a 2.5mm 4pole to 3.5mm 4 pole converter to use old cherised headsets on the HTC Touch HD... know of any, anyone?

Another solution.....
I know this might sound odd but a simple solution is get your stereo headset & mic thing and cut the right earpiece lead off...
Now you may have to strip the wire a bit and wrap a piece of insulating tape to stop the wires inside touching, which will cause problems (crackling or loss of audio on remaining speaker most likely). Once the wires are safely insulated away, youll have what you are seeking, a monaural one earpiece mic heaset... saves having to buy one that your finding hard to do.
Seems a shame to sacrifice a stereo headset down to mono, but if thats your poison, go for it.
pinouts.ru is the shiz
Get out the soldering iron and make a frankenstien. I grafted a 3.5 female to my old nokia's pop port so I could hook it to my stereo (before I got a BT adapter) and to my amplified helmet speakers (that were sorced from a computer speaker set.) Before I lost the phone I was planning to add a 2.5 mono female socket for a lil clip-on mic I have. Point being, it's only 3 signals and a ground, should be able to come up with something.
ts worth having a go
Yeah having a go is definately worth it. I just utilised the pinouts.ru stuff and a bit of personal common sense knowledge of the wirings and managed to make myself a 3.5 touch hd 4 pole jack into a 3.5 3 pole jack which works ofr my aircraft. I can now fly and make calls through my pilots headset. It shows it can work. You arent dealing with any dangerous voltages... its all piddly "put it on your tongue and you wont get hurt" voltages... speakers and mics... all easy to work out. Worth having a go.

TyTN x Sony Crossover!. Solution to the lack of audio port!

Just a bit of whining here...
The TyTN seems fine after a month of use but the headset issue is blowing my mind. I want to listen to the music and talk on the phone with some quality headsets.
First the supplied headset is a non standard USB, you cannot use your own headphones or connect to speaker inputs. Bluetooth stereo headsets are available but I believe that they are still too bulky and the technology is not yet fully developed.
You can't charge the phone while using the headset. This is just dumb, Very dumb.
Needless to say the quality of the supplied headset is not good, it is not even recognized by the phone as headset when you connect it. If you connect it to your phone while the phone is non silent, the phone still rings and not just your headset.
I have no idea why HTC is doing this, the TyTN is a relatively large device and it doesnt make sense that there are no spaces for a 2.5mm plug where you can buy all kidns of aftermarket wired headsets for it. Even the high end headset makers SHURE make headsets with the 2.5mm...
Finally I've made a move. TyTN X Sony Crossover Custom Headphones.
I've used a solder to remove the original earbuds wire and soldered a pair of cut SONY MDR-EX71SL headphones on. They sound 100 times better than the stock ones. This will ease my frustrations for now. I was tempted to solder my MDR-EX90LP on but they are $100 a pair. Too much for now
Later on I will try to rework the stock mini USB headphone and make a 2.5mm connector for it so I can use all kinds of headphones(with mic) and connect to a speaker system as I want!
EDIT: It appears that the original mini USB headset has 6 wires, 4 should be for the headphones and the remaining 2 for the mic, I can simply cut up the wire right after the mini USB port and connect the 6 wires to a standard cell phone headset 2.5mm connector then I should be able to connect the TyTN to all kinds of headsets![/img]
Arent you essentially doin this? http://www.4winmobile.com/tutorial-replace-hermes-headset-connector-with-35mm-socket-vt3146.html as seen in another post, seems like the most universal way to solve the problem.
I do like the way you built a set without a plug, cleaner..less cord and weight, but I know myself, I go through a pair of headphones about every 2 months on my mp3 player, Id hate to have to redo the soldering everytime, I expect with the headphones being such an issue for most peple that the market will be flodded in a month or so with headphones for the tytn, or atleast adapters, shoot, the one guy in the above url even offered to do it for free, as long as you bought the plug.

Can i also use the new connection as a line-out for little active stereo boxes, or is this to tricky for TyTn/boxes?

USB headphones?

Hello,
From the searches I have done on here and other forums to include cell phone stores, I can't seem to find any information pertaining to USB headphones. Basically my question is: Are there any reasonably priced headphones that directly plug into the usb port (without any adapters or mini jacks as the plug)?
Thanks.

For 15 bucks you get something from HTC that's workable until you find what you really want. Decent music quality. No adaptor needed.
It is funny you post this. I was just searching for some today and I purchased these.
If you search OEM Heaphones Fuze on eBay, you can find some for $10 shipped.
i have a sprint TP and DL the fuse FM radio app and it says that the phone uses the headphones as an antenna. mine does not work, you think with the fuse headphone it would??
USB Headphones - Not all work?
Are there different types of mini-USB headphones?
I just purchased a pair of Motorola "Stereo Headset with Enhanced Mini USB Connector" headphones that do not work when plugged into my fuze.
However, I went and found the old headphones from my Dash and plugged it in and it works.
Both have the phone/music switch.
Why would one work and other not? The shape of the of the jack on the old set just a little different that the Motorola's which look like a fat little "t" and is the same shape as all the connector wires and charging wires I am using. The shape of the jack on the old ones, however, does match the shape of the fuze jack.
Sorry if this is an obvious questions, but what am I missing? What do I need to look for when purchasing earphone/headset?
I have answered my own question. HTC is using a proprietary form of USB...extUSB. It combines audio and data, so you can use regular mini-USB for everything except audio. This bugs me. why do you take something that is supposed to be "universal" then make it proprietary. So now I gotta look for and buy special headphones.
bluetooth headset
I personally use the bt3030 bluetooth headset from jabra. Full stereo use any regular headphones you like. I use the stock ear buds works fine. These work for phone calls sprint nav as well as full stereo from mp3's basically any audio can be funnelled into these. cost around 80 bucks.

Is the 3.5mm headphone adapter an original HTC one?
RC E100 for the G1?
Hihi, I recently bought the HTC RC E100 (http://www.blueunplugged.com/p.aspx?p=137320). On that site it says that G1 works with it. But it doesn't? I tried it, and sound still comes out of the speakers.
Now it said that I need a driver from the disc or from the HTC site. I tried to install that, but it says that the phone is already updated and needn't update anymore.
Does anyone else have this headset, and have it working on their G1's? Thanks!
edit: Well upon researching, apparently it doesn't work. Stupid misleading site is misleading.
There was a set of headphones that came with the G1, you should see if you can get those or see if tmobile will give you some for free if they didnt come with yours.
I was almost tempted to purchase these or get the doopad ones(rc-w100) off amazon for a little cheaper. I was wondering if the g1 will even be able to have this function through the ext.usb? I know the drivers for winmo phones won't work but is there even the slightest bit of possibilities?
I know A2DP is comming for bluetooth but is there going to be an AVRCP profile also?
Apple In-Ear Headphones on Dream G1
Anyone had a chance to try it out?
I can't seem to find a single post anywhere talking about what the music quality is like or whether any advanced features like volume control work or whether calls work using the microphone.
Side story: I went into the Apple store to try it out and the store nazi said I could not try them on due to hygiene reasons. Fair enough, but he then even declined taking them out of the packaging so that I could just handle them and talk into it on a call to see if it worked. So instead I handled the box instead, ShopSavvy scanned it and then accidentally dropped it onto the somewhat dirty floor. Oops.

2-in-1 [USB Mini/3.5 MM] adapter

So I just purchased this handy little adapter which takes the USB port on the bottom of the G1 and turns it into a USB Mini jack and a 3.5 MM headphone jack. Why go to all this trouble? So I can charge AND play music at the same time
I bought this little piece of wonder off of Amazon for $6 including shipping, and it arrived in 3 business days. I'm really glad I bought it! Here's the review I posted on Amazon:
This is truly a neat little device. I often want to play music in my room over my T-Mobile G1, and it's a battle of charge versus play. I have to make sure that if I do play music, I'll have time afterwords to charge back up. Not the case anymore! I'm able to play music and charge my phone at the same time.
The adapter is very compact for what it does; it looks much bigger in the pictures than it actually is. It's about the size of a quarter, and a little longer width-wise. Sound quality is great; compared to the stock adapter that comes with the G1, I found that bass frequencies are carried much more better and with a little more "oompf". I found a lot more power for my system, and it works great.
The build quality is what you would expect; plastic build with very solid adapter ports. I don't expect it to break at all. The phone charges at the same rate of speed as normal, even with playing music. The port that plugs into the phone is the proprietary port that the G1 has, and the "out" USB port is your typical mini-USB port.
Overall, it's a great product, and a must have for all G1 users!

funny, mine came with that one.
I bought one that lets me charge/audio out/headphones in/usb/whatever made by HTC off ebay.
Removed ebay link since amazon has good price right now
I bought one but I have a sort of huge problem. When using it audio only goes to my right earphone. Can anyone else confirm this? I'm using jacxhero so that might be way.

Did you try switching earbuds? Haha sounds simple...but I have this really bad luck with audio devices, that eventually everyone I have I break the soldering points that connect the jack to the circuit board, and I always loose an ear of sound. It's just odd...but that could be it as well.

I bought this and it works with every rom I've tried. Cyanogen, JAC, JF.
I also needed an extension so I could hard wire my charger and line in behind my car dash with only one lead showing and the HTC adaptor has about an inch of cable between the EXTUSB and the adaptor itself. I hunted high and low but could only find one company who could do it and it were these guys.
Jays Earphones
I want one of these but it's much too thick for what I wanted it for (I only want music), Isn't there one that has only mini USB to 3.5 mm? I thought I had seen one a while ago.
I got one made by HTC when I got my Wing a couple years ago. It works great on my G1 and my MT. It is super handy to have it you listen to a lot of music
got a link where I could get one?
def. getting this tonight
Tried this on a friends G1 (stock T-mobile firmware lastest updates) and it does not come up with a headset icon like it does on my touchdiamond2. Does this mean it does not work or is the headset icon just for when you have a microphone attached?
i've noticed on the HTC one that the 3.5mm headset jack doesnt work. you need to use the adapter cable that came with the phone and plug it into the headphone port on the htc adapter.

I have an HTC Fuze and it came with this little Gem. It works on my G1 and MyTouch without issue. I love this thing! You can find them on eBay for around $7.00 USD
microphone?
When using this on a G1, if you plug a headset with microphone into the 3.5mm jack, does the microphone work on calls? I've read mixed reviews about this on Amazon and wondering if anyone has had experiences? Thanks,
I just got an HTC YC A300 today and it's working brilliantly!
It's 4-in-1, with extUSB headset plug, 2,5mm (mic+headphone), 3,5mm and extUSB power and data.
