Any tips for getting better FM radio recieving? - Touch HD Accessories

I was thrilled when I got my Blackstone, I thought "finally I can listen to radio wherever I go" but I learned quick that it was quite useless since the receptiom is so bad :/ With both the headset that comes with and my sennheiser hd 25-1
anyone kmow anyway to make better reception?

as the antenna is your headphone lead make it as long as possible. you can get one of these and keep the cable as high up as possible so maybe wrap round the back of you neck (not too much or else you could hang yourself.)

The antennae length for FM should be 59" to be exactly 1/2 wave which should give the best reception. If you load an app called HDTweak, it will allow you to increase the sensitivity of the built-in FM radio of the HD.

Thanks for the tips, Ill try

I want stereo bluetooth + FM Radio + earbuds.. 'Cause I'm spoilt

Afternoon Folks,
I guess we all want our ideals and dreams fulfilled.. so my aspirations are small really...
My TyTN pleasure would be boundless if I could get some bluetooth headphones/handsfree with an FM radio built in that either had, or I could attach some decent sony earbud ear phones (gotta blank out the incessant crap-chat on the train to work in the mornings ) rather than the pad ones that just fall out every other step..
So I'm thinking my only (currently available) option would be to get a Nokia HS-12W headset and pay a grown up to change the earphones over...
My questions are...
1. Anyone tried a HS-12W with a TyTN?
2. Anyone know of a person/company in the UK who would do the electronics sorcery?
3. Anyone think of a better way to achieve my modest dreams?
Thanks,
Andy
I have some Nokia HS-12W bluetooth headphones and to be honest I am disappointed with the results which I suspect has more to do with the phone than the headset.
I find that if I am more than about a metre away from the phone or the phone's memory is in anyway dealing with any other task, that I get constant skipping. I have come to the conclusion that this is because the phone memory can't keep up with the streaming but that is just a guess.
Also, I have found that the radio reception is a bit poor so quite often I get a lot of static noise, even on the strong stations. Sometimes it's okay though.
It is possible that either my headset or my phone are in some way faulty because I have read other peoples posts regarding the HS-12W and they have had some good results. Perhaps I am just unlucky
I have resorted to going back to using the standard headphones and using streaming radio instead (I am on T-Mobile so doesn't cost silly amounts of money for the data use).
Thanks for your reply Nicky...
I'll have a search myself for feedback on the HS-12W... I tried earlier and couldn't find anything directly tried with a TyTN but I'm crap at searching..
The closest "off the shelf" option seems to be one of itech's old PowBox's... LINK HERE it fulfills everything I want apart from it's not stereo bluetooth... it's mono... but at the moment I'm kinda thinking that may be a better option than trying to find someone to change the earphones on the Nokia, and then it perhaps not work afterwards...
From what others have written here the itech prodcuts in general seem to work ok with the TyTN so maybe an older itech product will work seamlessly! Yeah right!
Yep... my one beef with the HS-12W is the range (2-3 meters or so). I think its fidelity when in range is awsome though and it plays skip free too.
I've never tried the FM radio on it to be honest...
Thanks Sleuth
Do all the buttons on the Nokia work with the TyTN?
I was put off the itech R35 when a few people on here said some of the buttons aren't compatible...
Thanks,
Andy
Just out of interest, does anyone know what the difference is between the Itech S35, S38 and R35.
I was thinking of trying one of these to see if the range/skipping was any better than the HS-12W but also, I have some fontopia headphones which I would quite like to use and this would be quite a good solution for that too.
I have looked on the Itech website but am still struggling to see any comparitive difference.
@sts_missle: From an AVRCP standpoint, all the buttons work just fine with WMP. I can skip tracks, pause and control the volume without issues.
There's no AVRCP support at all for TCPMP/CorePlayer 1.0 yet however. This is a problem with those apps, not the HS-12W though. I believe CorePlayer AVRCP support is in the very near future though since it seems that the Technology Preview had it.
Thanks again Sleuth.
I've just found out the itech PowBox can't stream audio from a device, only from itself, (256mb memory or the radio) and it's a big ol' thing too, so the Nokia it is then..
Now I've just got to find someone who'll swap the earphones over for me...

3.5mm jack antenna only?

can anyone confirm if you can buy or make a 3.5mm stubby aerial for the hd? as i dont want to have to use the headphones to get radio reception. my reason for this is i want to recieve TMC signals but not using my headphones built in antenna. cheers
I'd like to know this as well, but usually when this question gets asked for different phones you mainly get people asking why you want to, and repeating what you already know about the heaphones normally being the antenna.
Good luck finding out - I hope you find a useful solution.
Yes, I just put a 3.5 - 6.3 adapter without any other cables and it worked just fine.
The quality of the reception was better, maybe because there is no torsions because of the cable... ?
(Sorry for my bad english, I'm belgian...)
i had a quick play with a old chopped headphone cable, seemed to work just fine. Made the cable about 6 inches - but after reading about the 3.4mm-6.5mm adaptor this may be overkill.
Just for reference - putting the stylus into the hole doesn't work either.

well, it was worth a go
Not sure what exactly a 6.5mm cable is (sorry if I'm being thick!).
So with an old headphone 3.5mm plug with 6inches of cable you can use the radio ok then?
Can you get it out of the speaker like this? I guess the answer is yes because if you have a 6" long chopped up headphone cable in place you can't use headphones!
3.5mm jack
I think think the guy is on about one fo these
i think i have one around the house so will test it when i find it.

Actually - it DID "sort of" work - the radio software registered that an aerial was connected and allowed the radio to search the airwaves.... it just didn't find anything!
Not a usable solution though - I had to exert some (light) pressure on the upper end of the stylus so that the end that was inside the 3.5mm socket was pushed against the actual terminal.

Ahh I see.
Hmmm, I have one the opposite way around but not that
Still, I have some knackered headphones I could strip down for the plug and then experiment from there.
Are there not any registry changes needed to go with this at all?
I'm using this one:

Does it work ok by itself?
I'd love to buy one of those but I can't find any on Ebay in English and although that auction list great britain for shipping it's 22EUR for the shipping for a tiny antenna!!!
Does anyone know how I can buy one of these please? Thanks if you can help!
How can you recieve TMC and will it work with Navigon that is installed on my HD.

How is reception?
does this really work? I would have expected that as soon as the dummy headphones were used all sound from the phone's speaker would stop. this would make sat nav a little useless.
I know it works with the radio application as there is an option to turn sound to headphones off and play sound through the units speaker instead.
The reception is excellent, RDS works well. Obviously, You'll have to listen to the radio through the built-in speaker, since the 3,5" jack is used by the antenna

Can you confirm in works with navigon? Would love to get TMC traffic working on my touch HD while still hearing the spoken directions.
There's no TMC receiver in the touch HD, only the good old-fashioned GPS. For TMC You'll need a separate TMC receiver - a friend of mine uses the GNS TrafficBoxplus FM9BT-Y, it works well with navigon.

Problem with Plantronics BackBeat 903 Bluetooth headset

I recently got the BackBeat 903 as a replacement for my previous bt headset, and it works great for calls, however, when I tried listening to music the playback experience is not as good. The music plays just fine, but as soon as I move the phone, or if I turn the screen off the playback starts becoming choppy, as if the audio player (I tried several, and they all do the same) would loose CPU time and control to the G-Sensor or something, and then when I stop moving it around the playback resumes. Anybody had the same problem? Thanks for your help!

Hey there benitton, I have the same headset, and experience the exact same issue...intermittent skipping, as if the handset was bogging down for different reasons.
However, I'm firmly of the opinion that the issue is with the phone and the sub-par bluetooth stack in it, not with the headset itself. I haven't tried other BT stereo headsets with this phone, but I've used the backbeats with other devices, and didn't have the same issue at all.
Unfortunately, I haven't yet found any source or method for replacing the BT stack in the TP2, we may just be stuck with this one for good
Have you used any other stereo BT headsets with your TP2? If so, did you notice the same symptoms at all? (<----- that's a question for anybody, not just the OP)
Unfortunately I have not found any other headset that I would like to use, and as you mention, it seems that no matter which one we could use we'll have the same problem. I am trying to see if there is any way we can run any audio player in exclusive mode, maybe that could help a little bit, but since the BT stack is part the system, I guess it will still have problems. I tried disabling the G-Sensor, but I was not able to fully disable it, so I still had problems with the audio, but not as much as when it is fully enabled. I will keep trying to find something, and any suggestions you might have would be wonderful. Thank you!

I honestly haven't tried any other BT stereo headsets with the TP2, so I can't say for sure...but honestly for $12 I might just pick up that motorola to give it a shot and see.
But...I'm sure there's others here who have used that same model, or even different ones, who could comment on whether they've seen the same issues...
I have the backbeat 906 (it's a 903 with the headphone jack adapter in the box) and haven't had stutter problems using a Touch Pro 2, T-Mobile version, with the stock 6.5 ROM and S2P/S2U2. The audio quality has been great and I use the thing while running so it's obviously moving constantly. What software are you running on your phone that might be eating CPU?

Yeah I really should have bought the 906's instead...because now I can't find the adapter sold separately anywhere, and I already have a number of uses for it
Now when I have the issue, I usually have nothing running but the media player itself (I've had the issue with several different ones as well). However, after re-reading the OP's notes, they do bring up a good point...I've got my g-sensor set to work with manila too, so that might contribute to the issue, but it's intermittent enough that I can't tell yet whether turning the sensor off made any difference.
It also occured to me this morning that it might be related to the commonly-felt lag whenever the SMS module is engaged (like when receiving an SMS)...again, since not every SMS msg seems to affect the performance exactly the same, it'll be a little while 'till I can tell for sure.
While we wait for any other suggestions, those might be things for benniton to take a look at too

Interesting. I'm not using the g sensor for pretty much anything - usually when I'm using the 906s it's while running so my handset's got Endomondo, S2P, S2U2, and sometimes pocket outlook open. I've noticed it breaks up a little if i have my phone in the opposite pocket from the left earphone (so right pocket) but it doesn't stutter exactly, just drops in quality. left pocket is fine though. it's always been fine in a belt case.
Before S2P had working AVRCP on the Pro2 I was using the Music tab built into Manila and didn't have any lag issues with that either. Though, I just thought of this - wifi interference? BT and wifi use the same frequency bands and watching youtube videos over wifi has definitely induced a headphone stutter for me in the past. I got around it by letting the video cache first and then playing.
Problem disconnecting calls
Hey fellas...
I got the Plantronics Backbeat 903 for my Touch Pro 2. I really like the headset but I'm having a problem with it not disconnecting a call when I click the phone button on it to hang up.
It will always pick up the call when I click the button to answer but it will only sucessfully hang up the call maybe 1 out of 5 or six times.
Are any of you experiencing the same issue?
I had a Sprint Touch and bluetooth worked great with S9 headset. Then I got a Diamond and headset was horrible, lots of cut-outs, tried all kinds of things to no avail. Also got a Jabra BT2010, same problem with Diamond. Now I have the Touch Pro 2, Sprint, WM6.1 and Jabra works great with S2P, Resco Radio, StreamCenter and Slacker radio. Haven't tried with S9 because it died, battery won't hold charge, before I got the TP2. Just thought I would share my experience.
Was the quality good streaming with the TP2 Bluetooth or using the adaptor?
Can I ask what case you use with the TP2 when running? I would like this set up but don't want to risk damage to the phone through swear or rain. Does the TP2 fit in a iPhone armband?
Edit: Just found this thread for anyone else after an armband:

Good with both the TP2 and the adaptor. I use S2P on the phone for my music app along with S2U2. As far as cases go, I just run with the phone in my pocket - I've run races in the rain and the phone's been entirely unaffected. Very solid hardware.
I used the BackBeat 903 with my iPhone 3G and experienced the constant breakup of signal whenever I tried to move around. If I was completely motionless, it provided superb quality - but if I tried to slowly walk across the room - it would break up with a frequency that approximately matched every right step (the phone was in my right pocket).
I disabled the "shake to shuffle" feature, just to be sure.
I tried holding the phone right up by my shoulders while walking, yet the disruptions continued.
And now I have upgraded to an iPhone 4 - and the problem is worse, not better.
Are we sure this is an Apple problem and not a Plantronics problem? Either way, I can't use the 903 for its intended purpose - to listen while walking.
Very, very frustrated.

I normally keep my phone in my left hand pocket when using the headphones - I believe the antenna is on the left side. I experienced poor performance with my phone on the right side of my body, but performance is typically good on the left. I've noticed that if I have a significant amount of metal between my head and the phone pocket (like, say, a handgun) the signal breaks up - my assumption is that whatever is in between the phone and the headset causes interference in the bluetooth connection. The best performance I've had has been my phone in the left side pocket of a pair of gym shorts, only wearing the shorts and a t-shirt. Also, for some reason my insulin pump doesn't seem to have enough metal in it to cause interference.
You have to make sure that your mobile phone is located on the left side of your body whole time, while you're using backbeat 903. It's in the manual hehehe. This will solve your problem. cheers.
Problem solved!!!
atleast for me ...I simply disabled the WIFI and poof the choppyness is gone and now plays without any distortion clear as a bell...hope this helps.
Of course I also used a registry editor to remove unwanted programs and clean out useless files.......... I think the problem lies with The 528MHz Qualcomm CPU with 288 megs of RAM.. I do not think it is sufficient enough to run all things at once...I would suggest to remove any and all unnecessary programs/files, then disable all which can be enabled when needed....good luck.

MyTouch Power Play FM Transmitter

Anyone know where I can get one that is IN STOCK? T-Mobile doesn't have them anymore from what I can see and all4cellular has been out of stock as well. Both have been out of stock for weeks and I really want to get one of these. Any info would be great. Thanks
you can use any 3.5mm FM transmitter but I can tell you from experience basically they all suck. You are better off investing in a stereo for your car that has a 3.5mm aux jack than using an FM transmitter.
I would cost way to much to put a stereo in my car that has a 3.5 audio jack. Luxury cars are not easy to install after market stereo's in :/
you would be surprised. http://www.crutchfield.com/
I already know how much it will cost. First I have to pay someone to make a custom dash kit. Then ill have to buy a head unit and find a custom wiring harness. Trust me its cheaper to spend the money on an fm transmitter...
You may want to look into getting a bluetooth adapter instead or your stereo may have an alt. input for a dvd player or other rear entertainment system . Most fm transmitters are not worth the money but you may be interested in an in lin one which would be worth it .
Car doesn't have either. I know ALL my options even hacking up the wiring in my car to have an aux input. I don't wanna do that.

Just out of curiosity, what are you driving? I'm kind of a car guy. Also since it is in stock now if you do buy one let us know how it is, I have found that the only way I could get my ipod FM transmitter to work decently is if I used FM 87.9 because there basically no FM stations in the US that use that signal.

99 Acura RL With Navi.
I just realized this but doesnt original MyTouch have a MiniUSB connector not a MicroUSB like the Slide? Meaning this Transmitter wouldnt be all that useful without using a Mini to Micro converter or using the line in option in which case the phone wouldnt get charged.
I found it at local t-mo store in L.A. You can't find it online or 611. Sucks. I loved it until I rooted and went to custom roms. There's an issue with the transmitters built in mic... it just doesn't work now. Kinda defeats the purpose I guess.
So it looks like it's back in the t-mo store. I couldn't find it all summer online and now it's back.

Are you really that scared to touch the stereo? Just because you have Navigation doesn't mean that the stereo isn't the same as all other cars, you have 2 different wires for each speaker, then you have typicaly 3 to 4 other wires, one will be ground, one will be an always on power (memory, saves your settings/stations), and a rem wire which just gives enough power to the head unit to tell it to turn on. There might be another wire for the dimmer on the front of the radio. And you DONT have to splice the wires, ever heard of BestBuy or Car Toys? or anything like that? They sell ADAPTERs that you just install inline with the stock wiring harness and you do'nt have to cut any wires. You don't have to spend tons of money for a custom dash kit either, I know for a fact they sell them at Bestbuy and car toys, pretty much any place that deals with car audio. Seriously though man, all you have to do is a little more research. Google is your best friend, me amigo.
Don't be a *****, it's really not hard, and honestly, who still listens to radio anymore? I mean get real guy, gonna waste your money on a damn FM reciever instead of getting a radio that will have 10000000x more use? But hey, to each their own, your money, your problems. Not mine.
If you car has an "AUX" connection in the back... alot of them do... go to radio shack and get a headphone to RCA wire and just connect it to your AUX and the phone and you're done.

Regarding FM transmitters - I posted about the DesignTech transmitter a while back. Do a search and check it out. The correct channel versionstill pops up on ebay every now and then, and they are cheap.
If you can find the right version its frequency response and TX power are terrific, well, at least as far as FM TX go.
Hope this link doesnt violate TOS - if so please remove. But they dont sell it anymore, so I dont see the harm. http://www.smarthomeusa.com/ShopByManufacturer/DesignTech/Item/20800/
Of course I am biased - I helped design the audio section - but I would put its sound quality up against anything on the market...

Replacement FM tuner

So long story short, when attempting to replace the caps for the radio circuit (for the 2nd time since the first time I used ones that weren't quite right) I screwed things up, the headunit still works I just have no radio audio.
Any thoughts on a fix?
I could replace the main board, but I've already done the Audio Mod and then I'd still have to swap the caps on the new one (or live with the lack of treble).
What about a USB FM tuner, maybe something that even has HD radio?

That was plan B, tho it would have to be a whole new main board, was wondering if there was a cheaper and easier solution that might also improve radio reception, seems like maybe one of the DAB/DAB+ adapters would work but there doesn't seem to be a decent software solution for those, at least not one that would be good enough to compete with the standard radio app.

It's not the tuner that is bad, its circuitry on the main board, long story short, I had done the radio audio frequency with caps that werent quite the right value, upon trying to redo it with the correct ones, one of the traces got damaged, so while the tuner part works the circuitry that feeds it via the radio input selection doesn't.
I looked at the DAB solutions, but we don't have DAB or DAB+ here (our digitial/HD radio is a completely different spec for which there are no USB modules). I could use a DAB/DAB+ module for just the FM, but from what I have seen none of the software parts of the solutions look very attractive compared to the stock radio app especially considering I wont have the added features of DAB/DAB+ like the artwork, song titles (the stations over here are really poor in terms of their RDS data), etc.

I see, what part of the world are you in ?
The app could eaily be altered, but you cant just tune into the FM signal, it only works if the DAB signal drops out.
Get a new motherboard then, I dont think theyre expensive.

US, in that case it seems like a DAB solution wouldn't work for my need, if it only switches to FM has a fall back and needs a DAB signal initially.
I ordered one, but I believe it's defective so I am now waiting to hear back from them, would have loved a standalone option that would have improved on the appalling reception the standard tuner gets.

No DAB in US, no HD radio solution by any MTCB manufacturers ? No USB HD radio solution ?
Theres something wrong if your tuner gets bad reception, do you have an OEM antenna booster in your car ?

Yeah it sucks, I would have even settled for a satellite radio option, not that I can find a USB solution for US HD radio spec, I think its a really limited market, plus the phone carriers (main android market) aren't particularly found of FM/HD radio being available on android (or other) devices.
No the car is old (1999) so just the standard antenna, on the previous board it worked (wasn't has good as OEM radio, but acceptable, I tried some of the aftermarket boosters and they made things worse). With the new main board all I get is static and it wont auto tune to even the most local stations.

The age of your car isnt that relevant - have you actually checked the base of your antenna for a power lead ?
Can you post links to the "boosters" youve tried or similar ?

The antenna is a standard antenna, I've had numerous other aftermarket radios with no issues before including my Ouku unit and my previous JY unit worked it just wasn't as good as OEM.
I used one off ebay and then another direct from Joying.

I think we are getting off topic here, I'm not looking for a way to improve radio reception, the unit wasn't great (compared to the OEM radio) but it was acceptable. Just looking for another option for FM radio reception, seems like there isn't one if you aren't in a DAB/DAB+ market area.

There are several solutions to having a poor FM reception with these units and many people buy boosters that are not actually boosters, I was just simply asking a few questions to see if any of the solutions would help you, not interested ? Then I ll shut up.

If installing an external HD Radio add-on is something you have interest in, consider checking out the Directed Electronics HD Car Connect Radio DMHD10001. These add on units can be had for $30 US or less on ebay and connect to your head unit via the AUX in RCA audio connections or via FM modulation. That said, I recommend using the RCA connections to anyone, as the FM modulation will usually have lessor overall audio quality. Please note that these specific Directed Electronics HD Radio Units need to have a ground jumper wire soldered from one or both of the tops of the gold RCA jacks to the black DC Ground in order to fix the over-modulation (distortion) issue. To do this jumper cleanly, remove the case cover and solder the jumper to the 90 degree ground pin at the plug connector. I also recommend drilling some vent holes in the upper case cover to help cool the unit as it does heat up.
Please note that these HD Radio units are only for use in the US (as far as I know), and are best used in areas of the Country that have more than a few HD channels available like here in So Cal. They do work with non HD AM/FM channels too. Some of the pluses are the additionally available music and news content in HD with no monthly fees, somewhat higher sound quality, as well as the overall better sound quality when compared to the built in FM tuners in the current Chinese android head units.
Attached is a pic of the grounding needed to fix the factory over-modulation flaw when using the RCA audio connections.
Moreover, you should be able to find an external satellite radio add-on unit that ties in via the RCA audio in connections if no usb version is available.
Hope this helps...
Your mileage may vary.
Best to all,

Thank you, I was thinking about something like that (obviously via aux in and not FM modulation, since my FM doesn't work). What I would love would be something like this that then had an Android app that could be used to remotely control the unit.
I had an HD radio add on box for a Clarion NX501 years ago, I don't live in a part of the country that has a ton of HD stations and depending on where I drive I don't always have the best coverage, but it is a possibility.

I appreciate the input, but I think there is some confusion over my needs.
I need an external FM tuner (i.e. something USB or the like with an android software solution for tuning). I have two motherboards, one has damaged traces for the radio circuitry so there is no radio audio (BT, streaming apps, etc are fine) the other that was bought has a replacement seems to have a defective tuner or something, I get nothing but static. This isn't an issue with the antenna or anything since prior to the damage on the original motherboard I had acceptable reception.
So to recap, I don't need to improve reception (tho if the replacement tuner offered better SQ or reception that wouldn't be a bad thing). I just need to find a way of getting an FM signal to the unit via USB or Aux in. Something like Rhacy would be good, but I was hoping for something a little more integrated and controllable through an android interface.

Yes, I know what you need, we touched on a new motherboard to fix your problem, I was advising for when you fit your new motherbaord, basically, the FM reception on these units is pretty good, once you have done a few basic things.
But I didnt realise you actually had the motherboard already and your problem is static.
In that case its HIGHLY likely that you simply need to flash the MCU to solve your problem - what device do you have and what MCU version ?
I recently had a similar problem (no radio, just static) and all that was needed was an MCU update, its very common after updating.
It could also be the wrong tuner type is set in factory settings, have you tried playing around with them ?

Thank you for the MCU mentioning, you could be onto something, the new mobo didn't behave exactly like my old one, I had issues trying to get my phone to pair with BT (though that could be due to new MAC address but same BT device name, I didn't work too hard on it since the radio issue was more pressing). But also the buttons on the front acted a little weird, like normally when I have one of the MTC apps open (radio, their music player, etc) if I hit the home button on the front of the unit it would keep that app playing but return me to the home screen, with the new mobo it closes the app like I pressed the back button, have to press the soft home button in the top left of the screen to keep it playing music.
I have the old mobo back in now, I will try and see what the MCU version is on that and then install the new mobo and see if its the same or different and try upgrading it.
I did try all the different options for the radio device under the factory settings menu, but all but one (the original one selected) resulted in just silence rather than static.

You will probably have to try different BT devices in factory settings as well. What MCU version is your new mobo ?
