CID Question - S740, S743 General

I'm thinking of buying an unlocked/unbranded S740 from England since I found it for a much lower price that can be found in Italy where i live. What are the odds of it also contanining the Italian localization?
An English phone is not a problem, but the main question is if I will be able to install the rom update that contains the localized italian, when it comes out, or due to CID issues I won't (because no one has made hardspl yet)...
Also I fear that I won't be able to download it in my language because of HTC asking the serial number...
many thanks

Bought mine from Amazon.co.uk unlocked and sim-free...no italian localisation option available. Sorry, mate.
Not sure about the other two questions, though...

Change languaje of HTC Hermes/SoftBank X01HT

I want to know is there is a possibility to Flash the HTC Hermes of Softbank:
http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/product/3g/x01ht/index.html
And change JAPANESE the ROM to English (or Spanish) one.
Thanks!

Beware the X01HT from SoftBAnk uses Bootloader 1.06. Basically that means that flashing it is impossible unless a fix for the bootloader issue is found. I just found out that I am stuck with Japanese now too

I had plans to go this afternoon to buy one What is this problem? I was looking in the forum but I couldn't find anything about it
The problem is that with Bootloader 1.04 the update software did not check the vendor ID of the Hermes. That meant that you could update a e.g. Cingular model with a T1 ROM or use a ROM with a different language.
Hermes that have Bootloader 1.06 (like the SoftBank X01HT) nocw ckeck that ID and won't let you update with a ROM from a different vendor....
Before you buy it, you can check mine if you are in Tokyo....
Yes, I'm living in Tokyo
So, is not possible to flash it Is there any post that speak about if they're researching to fix this issue?
Anyway, I don't speak many NIHONGO. Do you know any way to make it work in English (or almost English) ??
Other thing. I read in the Web that this model can't handle MMS. I imagine that it's because they didn't put a MMS program there. Could you make MMS work in your model?
Thanks for all!

Sorry for my late response here - I'd say currently there is no (easy) way to use a different ROM of the SoftBank model. I wil require somebody to come up with a solution for that, but that may take time. I'll go to the SoftBank store on the weekend to see if they plan to come up with an English model.
Right now, the unit will work in Japanese and Japanese only, no way you can get it to work in English as far as I can say at the moment.
MMS also does not work, so you are restricted to SMS. I am myself contemplating taking it back (I made an arrangement with the SoftBank people last Saturday to try how far I can get...) and get me a unit form Singapore.
So, if you are not comfortable with the restrictions, I'd rather advise to wait with the purchase. Let's see how DoCoMo will handle this...
Some more points:
You cannot use it currently as a wireless modem for your laptop (that's disabled)
There is no MSN chat on the unit (disabled too)
Outlook is fully restricted to SMS, I could not get pop or imap access to any other mail account to work.
I had the opportunity right now to compare a frirends DOPOD variation - he bought in Singapore. e uses it while visiting here utilizing his Singapore SIM roaming. On his, all functions work, including wireless modem, etc.
In my opinion, SoftBank did a great job in crippling the X01HT to the extent that it is less functional than an odinary Japanese 3G phone. My best advise is to buy a unlocked in Singapore or Taiwan. Alternatives on the Japanese market are the Wilcom units (but agreed, they are big and ugly compared to the sleek X01HT)
Hope that helps...

That's impossible. Softbank is removing all the staff for gaijins that Vodafone put here. For example, now WAP (Yahoo! Keitai) don't have any in English (I used the "last train" opcion a lot in the past).

You can still get that - on you phone, start the browser, the second left icon on the top and you are back on the old page where you can find the 'English' link at the botoom. But I agree, SoftBank is a huge step away from opening Japan to the West....
I probably have the chance to travel to Singapore within the next 3 weeks and will check the price there. I got friends in Singapore as well as in Taiwan and China who could ship the unit to me...
Hi!

Outch, this is expensive, considering that I got mine here as an update deal for my old mobile for something around $150-US... so I should not worry about the restrictions too much... ;-) I now managed to get Gmail up and running in mobile Outlook, so the SoftBank model becomes more and more practical.
What I still do not understand is why they disabled using it as a modem - that is really the single biggest drawback for me. The modem applet is simply not there and without it, dialup from my laptop via Blootooth does not work. It works fine with the same SIM in a Vodafone 3G phone, so I conclude it must e the missing modem app...
BTW, as an anectode - I recall the street price I saw in Taipei 3 weeks ago must have been somewhere near US-$ 400.--
Thanks for the link though!

I've tried the app and it looks great - however, when I try to send MMS it freezes and, well, that seems to be it then. There seems to be a real hard limitation why SoftBank cannot send MMS...

Can I install English OS on Softbank X10HT and continue to use it with SB Contract?

I am a newbie to pocket PCs, this is my first post here. I’m sure most of you must have heard of the Softbank X01HT by now. I would like to buy this phone/Pocket PC and use it with English OS (since I am a foreigner and my Japanese is very poor). But unfortunately Softbank only sells the Japanese version, I talked with one of their support staff, but she said that they don’t provide English version.
So I am wondering now; is there a way to install the English OS and still use it in Japan with the Softbank contract? . I went through the first few pages of HOWTO: change a Softbank X01HT from Japanese to English, if I follow those instructions will I still be able to use it with the contract? Where is the programmed contract information stored ? Wont I erase it thereby render the phone useless if I flash the ROM? I am assuming that they don’t use a SIM card (GSM) since all other normal Softbank phones use CDMA. But I am little bit confused here.. isn’t this same as iMate JASJAM (which doesn’t have CDMA , only GSM ?).
As I said before I am a total newbie so please bare with my noob questions
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated Thanks.
yes you can but not recommended for now. read this thread about the issue and you should wait and see how things turn out.

I cant read Japanese (especially Kanji). So is there any other work around to use this phone in English ? I still haven’t bought it but want to buy soon. Does anyone think Softbank will release an English version ?

you should check the sofbank plans first. they have a flat-rate data plan you may want to subscribe to in order to conserve the monthly cost. for that, you have to use the access point named open. we all know how to set up that connection using open and using it now however softbank doesn't like that and they will change it to a different access point that requires their new rom itself to set up. if you have a x01ht flashed with an english rom, you cannot use that new access point from apr 1 for the flat-rate data plan and that is our problem.
that's what it is in a nutshell...
Thanks, I am not familiar with all of their plans (I currently use AU by KDDI). I will be getting an Orange plan and their normal web package for internet. Because I’m not planning to use the internet a lot over Softbank connection. I have access to wireless connections almost everywhere in the university (where I spend most of my time) and in my apartment, so I will be using wireless for internet most of the time.

and to some extents I find it rather pathetic that Softbank ignores the need for non-Japanese OS on the Hermes. Nevertheless, Vodafone (= now Softbank) had been the vendor of choice for foreigners living in Japan for their mobile communication needs for years now, up to the extent that major foreign corporations had beed standardizing on issuing Vodafone phones as company phones. That SoftBank just ignores this need is something I cannot really understand. Is is just that they are unable to sell an English OS unit or are they actually unwilling to do so...?

i tend to agree with all that, but in fact all their 3g phones are equiped with japanese/english biligual interface except for x01ht. this is just my speculation but i think they didn't have a choice for that as wm5 is not capable of providing biligual interface. this is the same with docomo and their htc z is also sold just with the japanese os although they made the bilingual interface possible on their motorola m1000 symbian uiq device.
i believe they did have the option of selling english wm5 x01ht with a different stock number but they probably dropped that considering the market size compared to the japanese x01ht. it's a pity if that was the case...

However, as easy as it is for them to drop a firmware update on their site for new network information, you think it would be just as easy to make available an English official Softbank rom. Wouldn't that be a show of good faith.

I definitly agree here - basically SB is hurting itself with not supporting English on the X01HT. Everytime I walk by a SB store I see Westerners scratching their heads because they'd like to get the unit by shy away because of the Japanese OS. Bringing phone/pda's to consumers (as opposed to DoCoMo that keeps it to corp. customers) could help SB regaining market share, especially important since they struggle financially after the Vodafone aquisition. So I wonder what's keeping them become 'the' market leader for foreigners in Japan...? I hardly can believe that it is just the language barrier that is keeping them from posting a English SB ROM for the X01HT. If that's really it, I think there would be volunteers helping them with that...

Most probably not, if you bought it a while ago... bootloader 1.09 is very new, but even if it has it, this doesn't mean you can't unlock/unbrand it
I must decide what to buy... 1.Unlocked,Unbranded & Expensive or
2.A 3 Branded Simlocked Less Expensive HTC TyTn.
So I want to know if somone has succeded to fix their swedish 3 branded TyTn.
The Swedish 3 branded TyTn was delayed and has been aviable to buy for the latest 2 weeks...
Do like I did, buy a Orange SPV M3100 from ebay.co.uk for like £250, which is less than 3500 kr. It looks a lot better too

Contact Names not showing - International Numbers

Hello,
I synced my Outlook contacts to my Wiindows Phone. They are all saved with the internal ISD code in the format of +65 XXXXXXX in the names.
However, when someone calls the number shows up as only XXXXXXXX without the country code.
This error is really annoying me... and I just bought my first Windows Phone which is the HTC Titan.........
Hi Vikram,
This is a documented issue for people using a Titan in one country from another country.
I am using a UK Titan in Singapore, and I have the same issue.
Please post the following information, help us try and get to the bottom of this:
OS Version
Firmware Version
Source country of your Titan
(and out of interest, where did you buy it?)
Previously, people have experienced the same issue when porting WP7 to the HD2. See this thread. The poster there (Kjettern) installed a xap (a wp mini program) that edited the registry and made it work.
The regedit goes like this:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone]
"CallIDMatch"=dword:8
A guy in Singapore with a Trophy got it work with this method (Trophy is an earlier version of WP7, not WP7.5 like the Titan).
So I figured to do the same thing. To do that you need to unlock your device then edit the registry (or install a xap that does the same thing).
...exept that even if you can unlock your Titan (either developer unlock or chevron unlock), then you still can't edit the registry due to it not being INTEROP UNLOCKED.
A couple of nice people (Heathcliffe74 and GoodDayToDie are trying to get interop unlock working on HTC devices but no joy on Titan so far (it ships with the updates on it).
SO, the news is - wait til someone cracks it, and then we might have a solution.
Funnily enough, Kjettern in Norway now has a Titan, using the same European ROM (I think) as the rest of us...and he has no problem with the CallerID/contact card issue. But then the Norway Titan is designed for use in Norway (see the back of the Europe model box) so maybe there is additional regional coding in the OS somewhere?
In the meanwhile, I have apocrophylic news that someone in Singapore has a Taiwan model, and no such problem with CallerID/contact cards with phone numbers.
So I got to thinking, why not flash my Titan with the Taiwan ROM?
A nice guy called Football sent me the ROM...but because the Device ID is different you can't do a straightforwards Rom Update Utility flash...you have to use the "goldcard" method, which is pretty complicated. I made a frankenstein cable to achieve that and must have screwed up somewhere because it blew my screen out So my Titan is in for repair (yes, HTC Singapore will repair for S$50 handling charge under Global Warranty).
When I get it back I will try to flash the Taiwan ROM again. If it works, I will report back here.
---------- Post added at 01:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:06 PM ----------
Oh yeah, there are a few of us posting on Harwarezone SG website in the WP7 usergroup. Come say hello.
But XDA is much better for the techy stuff
Should also add: you can store both numbers +65 xxxx xxxx and just plain xxxx xxxx as a workaround...not practical if you have 1000s numbers of course. I edited key contacts in Outlook and added the xxxx xxxx as "assistant". It doesn't show up in WP contact cards, but it does work on incoming calls.

[Q] UK Titan - no US region settings

Hey everyone, sorry if this has cropped up previously but I've searched to no avail and no one from Microsoft has an answer either.
I've got a new HTC Titan sitting here, completely unused. I won it at the Windows Phone Inner Circle event in Denver weeks before the device's US launch, but I still haven't switched over. This is because the device is a UK phone. The phone does not appear to have any US settings at all, is unlocked, and even comes with a UK plug instead of a US one. Presumably, this is because I won the device before the US version was ready for release.
The issue is that even when I switch my region settings over to "English (US)", nothing actually changes on the phone when it restarts...everything is still English (UK). For example, "synchronising", "favourites", "colour", etc. At first I thought that this wasn't a big deal, but it might be if other region settings persist. So I have three related questions that I'd love to find out:
If/when a custom bootloader is released for the Titan, can I use it to flash a US ROM to my device?
I have to switch carriers to AT&T in order to fully use the Titan (hence my hesitation), but will bringing the phone to AT&T and letting them activate it have a chance of loading US settings onto the phone? I know that will load AT&T app marketplace options, which is why I was curious.
Most importantly, even if none of this can possibly change, will I at all be restricted by UK region restrictions for Zune, Marketplace, etc.? I have a US-based Zune and WLID account, but this is my main concern because of the phone's region.
If anyone can share some insights on this, I'd really appreciate it.

1. US ROM must be considered. Because the AT&T version Does use the different Chips for different Radio version. It might get the phone bricked. The Goldcard tecnique is not available on Titan, so Official AT&T Rom to flash on the phone is nearly impossible. It need to be done by 3rd party.
2. No. Your Live ID will determine which content you can access. Don't ask why people at Asia can still submit and buys apps that are for US only.
3. The region of the phone could be changed, but not the agent inside. So, don't be surprise that you have the English voice comeout from Tellme and Turn-by-Turn navigation from Bing maps doesn't work at US. You can change, the Region Format, System Locale and Browser &Search Language to English (United States) but it can't change the fact, that this phone is built for Europe user. I will ask HTC if they can bring the custom language pack (if possible) to Windows Phone. I am still talking to HTC Tech Support about this.
I contacted HTC Support several times and they didn't give me any solution (apart from doing a deadly mistake of telling me to search the Android Market for an application :S)!!
I'm still hoping we find a different ROM to flash. Is there an Australian version maybe floating around? I'm dying to use voice navigation and Tellme (which doesn't understand anything when set to English UK).
Thanks for the replies...starting to think maybe I should just sell the thing and use the money to buy a US Titan - especially due to the points about navigation and TellMe. Of course, I'd probably want to sell it to someone in the UK so no one else has region problems. Maybe I'll start looking into that.
In the meantime, if any encouraging news pops up about this, let me know
