Hello,
I found the Advantage to be very slow with TomTom. I used the same application on my old HP 2795 (QVGA display) and the navigation was nice and smooth unlike the fragmented, slow-motion like display on the Advantage.
I have the original TomTom 6.010 with the latest North America 6.75 (build 1409) maps (purchased). I don’t have any problems getting the GPS signal but when on a route the screen only refreshes about once every second. For example, after making a 90 degree turn it takes about 50 to 100 meters to actually show the current direction and the turn itself (which is supposed to be a continuous, smooth transitioning movement) is shown as 3 intermediate angle segments in a rough, broken movement.
I saw another thread, addressing a similar issue where an upgrade to the next 6.030 application version was suggested. I tried both 6.030 and 6.032 (these aren’t the original ones) and despite a faster acquiring time and a lot better lock when configured to use the internal GPS rather than another NMEA (on the 6.010) the newer the application version the slower overall performance – strange isn’t it?
On the other hand: any suggestions on the CorePlayer 1.1.1 settings? I plaid with pretty much all of them with no much difference anyway, overall getting a medium-poor performance.
I would really appreciate a feedback on both
Thanks,
By chance are you storing your maps on the microdrive?
Many people here have experienced the map skipping you mention and all of
them were storing the maps on the MD. Moving the maps to the MiniSD card
always seems to fix the problem. Give that a try. if it still happens, then you might have another program running in the backround causing problems.
One thing that improves TT performance generally is to turn off POI's displayed on the map. I leave on the speed-camera one's and thats about it. You can still navigate to them without them being displayed, and does up the performance somewhat.

Mine works without any problem on microdrive.
Yes, I'm storing the maps on the MD, but I plaid around with it and stored maps on both, MD and card and honestly I didn't notice any difference. Besides I'm sure there is no other program running in the background; I ran TomTom after a hard reset just to test it - nothing else installed and still works crappy.
Eaglesteve, what TomTom version (application/maps) are you using?
Are you running WM6 or WM5? Mine runs WM6 and I suspect this to be one of the issues. Funny thing is I tried the very same application and maps on an ASUS running WM2003 SE and it works just great.
As far as I know TomTom does not support WM6 and probably they have a reason not to. I've opened up a ticket with TomTom and asked them the same question...2 weeks ago and still no answer.

I have TT6 wunning on WM6 no problem. I always store maps on the SD. However, the size of the map makes a big difference to the performance. If I use the Western europe map, it crawls. If I just use an individual country map (eg UK or France), it is much much faster.
ir runs ALOT faster in landscape try it and see, even moving through the menu's is faster
It REALLY made a huge difference when I disabled all POI. Now it runs nice and smoothly and it recalculates the routes just as fast as TomTom Go 720 – which is almost instantaneously. No more complains there – thanks a lot.
I also believe that using a smaller map vs. the whole North America would probably help but since I leave on the border and constantly swing between Canada and USA I cannot really benefit from that – I have to use the whole map to be able to cross border without having to switch maps.
I must disagree with increased performance in landscape; I thoroughly tested both modes and I believe the software was actually made and optimized for portrait. Depending on what application version is used the modes are differently interpreted however the best results are always yielded in portrait: faster refresh, better auto zooming and no horizontal sweeping effect on video refreshes (only visible in v6.010).
Again, thanks everyone for all your valuable feedback.
On the other hand, anyone ever tried to install/convert the application from the stand alone units (like TomTom Go xxx or One xx) to PDA? I guess I’m asking weather there is any way to make it work? I tried with no success. Funny thing is the maps used by TomTom Navigator are correctly interpreted and used by, say Go720 but it doesn’t work the other way around. It would be really sweet to have the latest v7.220 on my Advantage. Thanks again

I am using HTC's WM6 & TomTom 6.010 no problem, quite often with a lot of other programs running. It is better than on my Uni. I am using Western Europe maps and have the POIs turned on (will turn them off to see if there is a change).
I am interested in how you managed to get hold of upgraded versions, where from, I can't ever find anything through the normal tomtom channels.

im such a dufus, I meant portrait and even had it pictured in my head and yet somehow typed landscape
tomtom
it runs quite fast on my advantage actually. no problems there perhaps there are too many background processes running on yours or a lack of running memory?
How you turn off the PQI?
Is that going through preference, and uncheck all of the PQI..?
Dear community members,
I need a piece of advice... I am, now for quite some time, an HTC TyTn [a.k.a Hermes] owner/user.
I am seriously considering buying an HTC Touch Pro [a.k.a Raphael]. But I need some advice…
I will try to ask my questions/concerns in an outline style… Please bare with me and try to help…
¤ Is Raphael’s performance superior or inferior to Hermes?
¤ How does the GPS behave? Is it satisfactory?
¤ Is the ROM development community becoming more active? Will it ever be like the Hermes one?
Thank you.
Cheers.
As a Hermes user who has just upgraded to a Raphael, i can tell you this:
- Performance difference is huge. TF3D speed is acceptable out of the box, but with the tweaks offered here on the forum, very fast. But there are loads of other things that make the upgrade worth while: gps, much better sound quality playing music, FM radio, a superb VGA screen, more memory, better surfing experience, youtube client and much more...
- Haven't tested GPS yet
- That is one of the main reason why i upgraded to the Raphael instead of the SE Xperia, because a lot of the Hermes/Tilt cooks are coming over to this forum.
With a little luck the Raph should be the daddy, will be receiving mine some time over the next week.

Thank you for your prompt answer
My greatest curiosity was about the overall performance and GPS...
A shame you haven't tried your GPS yet...
Neverhteless, thank you so much.
Cheers and good luck with your new device

Yup! I will be getting mine [according to my plans and if no one decides to drop a piano over my head] on the 29th i.e 6 days form now
Can't wait... I look like a little kid waiting for christmas eve... LOL
Cheers and good luck for both of us and our brand new devices.
I've tried GPS and it finds satellites quickly way faster than my tytn II but not as fast as i would like. I used Garmin mobile xt and visualgpsce to test it.
I had the hermes and the tytn II and this is by far better than both in finger friendliness and in performance.

Remember getting a fix for the first session is generally the slowest time, with continued use Ive always noticed GPS fixes are quicker....this is using my Holux BT320 with my Hermes......the built in one in the Hermes naturally shows two satelites erroneously which is a shame
(yes i KNOW the GPS doesnt work in the Hermes but it gets a fix on 2 real quick hehehe).
I use TomTom 7 on my Raphael and the first fix was a bit long, but also because i didn´t update my QuickGPS tool.
Second time use was much quicker. Great reception even in bad weather conditions.
I also used to be a Hermes user but the Raphael rocks big time, especially when you run the Raphael Tweaks in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=413562
I'm also curious about the GPS performance. I currently have a Holux GR-230 GPS receiver connected to my Hermes and I'm thinking of upgrading to the Raphael, as I'd like the GPS internal (and many other features, but GPS primarily).
I'm wondering whether the GPS performance is comparable to an external GPS receiver, or if I would have to weigh a better external GPS receiver against a more convenient internal GPS receiver.
On other threads I've seen many response that GPS is good and fine and all that, but I'm just wondering how it compares to an external one. Hope someone can shed light on this.
Hermes against Raphael
Hello,
also used Hermes for last 2 years and now upgraded to Raphael. There is no way how to say, how big difference this is... from style design to VGA, speed - everything is uncomparamble with Hermes. I think, there is other HTC killer machine
Have Raph for about week and half and tried to test everything.
Desing is awesome. Yesterday I take my Hermes out for cottage (it is my wifi router now) and I was supprised, how ugly this device is against Raph.
Display - awesome, this is cool. Compared with qVGA this is cool. Great is also, that there is no display frame above display, so u can easily touch corners with your fingers. Also better touch support is great.
Speed is great, RAM helps very much.
Everything is great on this device. If Hermes was for you right device, as was for me, u will love Raph.

Yeah please do MaRaHoX because i´m a big fan of your ROM´s
So I am at a cross roads...
I have a VZW 6800 which has been an excellent phone. I'm tired of the out of memory restrictions on it though because it only has 64mb of RAM.
The crippled VZW Touch Pro has 192mb of memory so that's a huge increase (but a disapointment from 288 on the sprint), so it would solve my memory problem.
The touch Pro 2 has been announced and at best we will see it on VZW by december, but most likely Feb of 2010.
The Touch Pro 2 has marginal upgrades such as better resolution, but it also loses things like a Dpad. The processor and camera appear to be the same.
Soo..with all of this logic, Would you wait for the TP2, or get the TP now? The rom scene for the TP seems mature too.
If you did upgrade from the 6800 to the TP, what was your opinion of the difference?
Ok...so I bit the bullet and picked up the Touch Pro.
So far, yes, it is an improvement. I have been doing all the actions without being out of memory...
If you dont use Touchflo its very hard to run out of memory. However with TF3D running and a few apps ie: pocketplayer, IE, sms, etc i am constantly having to babysit this thing. This is with a vzw optomized custom rom and 40+ megs ram available at start up. run opera for a bit and it needs to be rebooted.
And people said 128 is enough...
I know some people that have the touch (6900) and run out of memory the same as the titan with custom, optimized roms. I don't mind babysitting my phone though, always have been pretty religious on managing my own memory. It does help when you have a mem limited device.
i baught the sprint tp and use it on vzw network

Thanks for that insight
I made the upgrade from the 6800 to the 6850 (Verizons version of the TP)
I have to say it's worth the upgrade as far as memory is concerned but the unit STILL will run out of memory if your not careful...
Now most of that has to do with the Apps more than the phone...as someone mentioned, Use Opera for any extended length of time and you will have to reset the unit...I couldn't get You Tube to run as there wasn't enough memory available on one of the ROMs I tried to use...
I would say that if you don't intend to run much more than you had on your 6800 then you will love the performance of the TP.
But if you want to play with TF3D (which IMO isn't a finished piece of work yet!) you will find all that extra memory really doesn't buy you all that much other than snappier performance...You will still find yourself resetting due to memory leaks and undumped cache.
It seems that each new generation of phones is designed with just enough power and memory to run all the stuff your last phone ran as it was intended to run....
But they also come with new software and capabilities that when you try to take advantage of them you quickly find yourself asking why didn't they put more into the unit?
I would love to have waited for the TP2...but by the time Verizon gets it in there will probably be a CDMA version of the IPhone....I hate Apple but I have to admit it is the one phone out there that seems to run everything for it well....
So I have the TP now, and the only thing I really dislike about it is the missing 96mb of memory still.
I keep wondering that if the TP2 makes it to Verizon unscathed how I will feel about missing the Dpad. The Zoom slider may work better than the circular zoom slider on the TP as well.
I have had the touch pro for about a week now, an upgrade from the 6800. I, like alot of people am having a love hate relationship with this.
What I like:
-->I like the screen (both the look and the finger touch)
-->I like the camera
What I don't like:
-->I realize this has an additional 128 MB of RAM, however even with a stripped down ROM, I'm still having some issues with apps closing. I
-->Battery life sucks
-->Charging sucks (the thing drains even when its plugged in; this was not an issue on the 6800)
-->The aGPS on the Titan worked great!
Other comments:
I like having the numbers keys, but I'm still getting used to the key layout.
The dPad works, but the right and left are not very responsive
if its anything like the sprint TP you need to touch to the outside of the circle for the dpad. once you learn how it works youll find that left and right are really quite sensative.
i've had windows mobile forever and basically i now have an oppertunity to get the hero but keep my touch pro.
does anybody have any advice on the difference between the 2 os's?
the goods and bads of anroid compared to winmo?
The biggest difference is that multi-tasking is a little different. By default there is no list of running processes, and no way to switch between them. Instead you go back to an already open app by going through the menu and opening it like regular again.
ahm, long pressing the Home button will bring up the list of currently/last opened apps so you can switch between them
Ok, I'll give you that, it makes switching easier, but it is not a task list. Just a shortcut to some recently launched apps. If you open 7 apps, you won't be able to switch to the oldest.
If you compare stock Android (1.5) versus stock Windows Mobile 6.1 / 6.5, it'll be a close call. I think I would rather have a WinMo device then.
But the HTC interface on the Hero makes it a no-brainer for me.
But it all depends what you use your device for. If you are a heavy bluetooth user you might want to look into that first, but since I hardly ever use it I have no issues with android and loved it from the first few minutes of using it . And that was after years of Winmo-using.
But Android simply doesn't have the HUGE list of applications, tweaks and tricks that Windows Mobile has.
If I had to choose between a Touch Pro or a Hero, I'd go for a Hero. But if it was a Diamond2 / Touch Pro 2 (or maybe even a Touch HD) and I could tweak it completely with all the knowledge from cooking I had, it'll be a though choice . TouchFlo 2.6 on a Diamond2 is still a lovely combo.
Hi everyone im new to the forum and to android.
Im also a converted WinMo user, i had the touch hd running with Duttys rom and sometimes Energy rom. I enjoyed the installing of new roms etc but the biggest thing for me though was the lack of a marketplace and consequently the lack of really good apps that compare with android.
True there is a marketplace on winmo being released soon with WM 6.5, but ive used WM 6.5 and i hated the interface. Plus there are no winmo phones i can think of that are finger friendly (all operate with pressure sensored UI's). Android has a nice UI.
The hero for me has exciting potential and i think can acoomplish great things once they get rid of the infamous lag. Plus the developers are shifting over more and more from apple (flooded) to android.

Good point - Android bluetooth is partly crippled at the moment, the API has not been finalised thus it has not been released.

The article linked here gives a reasonable accurate and concise summary of the differences between the two, including relative strengths and weaknesses. From my experiences, I'd agree with most of what the author has said.

wow thank you, but i have another related question, should i get the "my touch 3g" which from my understand is basically the htc magic and just put a hero rom on there or is it worth the extra bit of ram to get the hero?
Are you in the US? If so, bear in mind that the Hero won't work with any 3G network as yet, whereas the T-Mobile branded MyTouch 3G will at least work on the T-Mobile 3G network (assuming you're in the fairly limit coverage area!).
Personally, I would get the Hero, but if you can get a Magic with 288mb Ram, it should run the Hero run ok. As far as I'm aware, all HTC branded Magics should be ok, but I do know that some operator branded Magics (e.g. Vodafone UK) only have 192Mb Ram and therefore won't really run the Hero run acceptably.
Regards,
Dave
I was thinking of purchasing this phone used on ebay since they can be had for about 100 bucks, and using it to replace my GPS unit (no plans on adding a data plan or phone service to this device) since GPS units tend to have slow and laggy processors unless you spend upwards 300 dollars, and still not get the features i want that igo primo has.
1. Does this phone have a GPS module in it that is not dependent on a data connection, i think it is called AGPS or something? and if it uses a regular GPS chip/module is it any good or about as good as say a 200 dollar standalone GPS unit?
2. Can this phone duel boot win 6.5 and android, i think i saw a youtube video of it duel booting. Only reason i would like android on it as well is for the many GPS software options that are available for android. Even though igo primo is currently the best IMO for windows mobile/ce.
Thanks in advance.
1. Yes
2. Yes
Thank you.
Do you use the GPS on your hd2 often is it pretty accurate? accurate enough to be used as a standalone GPS without data?
I use it in my car ok.
If buying used from crimeBay or Crapslist take care as plenty of faulty & badly repaired devices are pumped out in 100buck range.
